Mary Stronks
ASHTON — Mary Gunnell Summers Stronks, 84, of Ashton, returned to her heavenly home on June 24, 2009, at the Madison Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving husband and children.
She was born December 20, 1924, in Rexburg, Idaho, the fifth of seven children of Harvey I. and Eva G. Summers. She attended elementary and high school in Rexburg and received her cosmetology license in Idaho Falls.
On June 6, 1953, she married Theodore Edward Stronks in Rexburg. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on January 27, 1963.
Mary was a devoted mother, wife and homemaker. She had a beauty shop in her home for more than 50 years which blessed her life with many lifelong friends. She enjoyed working in her beauty shop and making house calls to her friends in the nursing home. Through the years, Ted and Mary have been seen picking up shut-ins who couldn’t get to the beauty shop. Mary knew what a hairdo and a good visit could do to brighten a day.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed her callings which included Relief Society president and many years as a primary teacher. Ted and Mary enjoyed serving as stake missionaries and in the Family History Center.
In her younger married years, she loved bowling in several different leagues. Many happy times were enjoyed with friends and memories made through bowling and also activities in the Lion’s Club and American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Ted of Ashton; children, Diann (Dean) Brown of Sugar City, Darlene (Louis) Kjar of Aurora, Utah, Teddy (Delena) Stronks of Ashton, Todd (Jan) Stronks of Ashton, Tim (Gwen) Stronks of Pocatello; 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, at the Ashton LDS Stake Center with Bishop Michael J. Davidson officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Stake Center and Saturday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. also at the Stake Center prior to services. Burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery
under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home.
Dorothy L. Keefer Gifford
Dorothy L. Keefer Gifford was born in Idaho Falls on May 5, 1936, to Clyde and Rilla Keefer. She passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2009.
She grew up in St. Anthony, and was the youngest of five children. She graduated from South Fremont High School and attended Idaho State University as well as a Floral Design school in Denver.
On March 3, 1957 she married Dennis Gifford of Ashton. Dennis and Dorothy made their home in Ashton, where they farmed potatoes and barley. Dorothy also worked in a floral shop in St. Anthony with her mother. Dorothy was very busy with civic activities in Ashton and worked with the library as well as the medical center helping to recruit doctors to work in Ashton.
Dorothy worked with the Fremont County Historical Society to preserve the Johnny Sack Cabin in Island Park. She worked with Secretary of the Interior, Cecil Andrus, and Senator Frank Church and Senator James McClure and with her effort the Johnny Sack cabin is still standing.
Dennis and Dorothy also raised three daughters.
In the summer of 1986 Dorothy, Dennis and Heidi moved to Salt Lake City. Dorothy worked for Landures Produce as a salesperson. In 1988, she opened her own herb business know as Farmer's Daughter Herbs. Along with help from her family she sold fresh cooking herbs to local restaurants and grocery stores. She became very active with The Chefs Association and won the "Purveyor of the Year" award as well as the "Lifetime Achievement" award. She donated many herbs to Salt Lake Community College and Red Butte Gardens and helped educate others on the use and care of fresh herbs. She was able to run the business until the summer of 2008, when health problems forced her into retirement. Dorothy was very proud of being a woman who owned and operated a small business and having it be successful for more than 20 years.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Dennis, her three daughters Lurah Klatt (Steve), Jacqueline Gifford Dilley (Joe), and Heidi Henderson (Daryl) as well as three grandchildren Zachary and Jeremy Henderson and Elizabeth Dilley. She is also survived by her brother Don Keefer PhD (Virginia) of Idaho Falls.
Mom, you leave behind quite a legacy and you will be remembered as a strong, wonderful woman who accomplished many things. We love you Mom, and thank you for an example of a wonderful fulfilling life. You will be missed. Love from your "Farmer's Daughters," Lorrie, Jacque and Heidi D, Thank you for 52 amazing years. It has been quite an adventure! Love you, D. Grandma, Thank you for making a difference in our lives. We love you! Lizzy, Zach and Jeremy.

John S. Gardner
John S. Gardner, 58, of Mackay, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2009, at his cabin in Island Park from cardiac arrest.
He was born on July 16, 1951, in Boise. He is the son of Jack and LaVaun Gardner. He grew up in Idaho Falls and graduated from Skyline High School in 1969. He earned degrees from Ricks College, Brigham Young University, and Idaho State University.
In 1974, he married Margaret Norton. They had two children and were married for 27 years. They divorced in 2001. John met Karen Hames of Mackay in 2004. They shared several wonderful years together up until his passing and were engaged to be married. Karen’s family loved John very much.
John worked in various occupations throughout his life. He sold automobiles and real estate. He was a manager at the Super 8 Motel. He taught business and computers at Cambridge, Shelley, and Bonneville high schools. After earning a degree in Computer Information Systems, he worked in various computer related jobs. He also worked as a substitute teacher.
John was an avid sports fan and loved football, basketball, volleyball and baseball. He served as a coach in several different sports and he worked as a baseball umpire. He especially enjoyed coaching his son’s ball teams through the years.
John had many talents and abilities. He had a beautiful singing voice, played the guitar, did woodworking, and built models. He was also an avid reader.
John served an LDS mission in the Kansas-Missouri Mission, and served in various callings in the LDS church such as athletic director and membership clerk.
John especially loved spending time at his Bills Island cabin with his family and friends. Fun times were spent snowmobiling, water and jet skiing, 4-wheeling and playing games.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jeannie Ray. He is survived by his children: Melanie (Shane) Bennett and Tim (Ebony) Gardner; his birth mother, Lorna (Wendell) Terry; his half brothers and sisters: Dale Terry, Craig Terry, Robyn Wulle, Sandy Pett, Lori Burton; and his grandchildren: Rylee, Avery and Braxton Bennett, Jaden Gardner, and Lukus Call.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon, with Bishop Richard Reynolds, of the Mackay LDS Ward, officiating. The family will visit with friends on Thursday from 7 - 8:30 p.m. and on Friday from 10 - 10:45 a.m., both at Wood East Side.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the Grove City Cemetery.
Joseph Larry Isaacs
Joseph Larry Isaacs, 72, of Idaho Falls, passed away August 3, 2009, at his home. He was under the care of Hands of Hope Hospice.
Isaacs worked with his father and brothers in the logging industry and helped them operate Trude Siding in Island Park. The siding was a railroad stop for people who lived in the Shotgun Valley, Elk Creek, and Pond’s Lodge areas., and workers loaded logs there that were cut in the area. The Isaacs also built potato cellars throughout the Snake River Valley.
Isaacs was born May 10, 1937 in Idaho Falls, to Joseph Alvin Isaacs and Ora Blanche Tyler Isaacs. He attended Ammon Elementary and graduated from Bonneville High School before attending Utah State University in Logan. He lived for a brief time in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He married Colleen Sargent on December 20, 1996 in Idaho Falls. He worked as a truck broker in the produce industry, specializing in potatoes.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, camping, and family outings.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen Isaacs, Idaho Falls; daughters Tanna Isaacs (John) Beal, Blackfoot, and Nora Janet Isaacs (Paco) Duran, Idaho Falls; brothers: Porter (Ramona) Isaacs, Jack (Donna) Isaacs, and Bob (Jean) Isaacs, sister Mickey (Owen) Briggs, and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; four sisters; and his fishing buddy and son, Frank Isaacs.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2009, at Ammon Cemetery
under the direction of Wood Funeral Home, with Roger Sargent officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to The Hands of Hope Hospice, 1379 E. 17th Street, Idaho Falls, ID 83404.
Rod Eastvold
Rodney John Eastvold, 64, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 8, 2009.
He was born June 4, 1945 in Boise to Doris and Joseph Eastvold. He attended Hawthorne Elementary School in Boise through the fourth grade. In 1955 he moved to Pocatello with his family and attended Green Acres Elementary School, Alameda Junior High School and Pocatello High School. In 1960 he attended Concordia St. Paul in Minnesota. He also attended Grimms Business College in 1960 and 1965 and Glen E. Clark Business College in Idaho Falls in 1963.
Rodney married Marsha Rose Getty on August 30, 1962 in Pocatello.
In 1990 Rodney, Marsha and Dana moved to Island Park, their second home, to live full time. They lived in Rancho McCrea. While in Island Park Rodney was the Fire Commissioner from 1993 through 2000. He was also the Planning and Zoning Administrator and Building Official for Fremont County from 1993 through 1999. In 2004 they returned to Pocatello to live in their 5th wheel and they traveled south in the winters. Through the years they took many family trips to Arizona, Mexico, Canada, and the Oregon Coast.
In 1960 Rodney was employed at Flaherty Sales, Inc., in Pocatello, then Harold’s Beeline Service from 1961 through 1963, then City Motor Company from 1962 through 1963. In 1963 he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad Company. While employed with the railroad, he held positions of Roadmaster’s Clerk, Clerk Steno, Traveling Engineering Accountant, Bridge and Building and Signal Clerk. He was promoted to Manager of Engineering, Planning and Administration in 1981. He was promoted to Assistant Division Engineer in 1985. He retired with railroad annuity in 2005.
Rod and Marsha are members of the Grace Lutheran Church in Pocatello.
They loved to make antler jewelry and took many memorable trips with family and friends. Rodney loved to pull wrenches, building things, camping, hunting and fishing. Rodney’s best trip of all was in 1999 when he and Marsha went to Alaska. They spent three months driving all the interior roads and living in their 5th wheel.
In the early years Rodney and Marsha fished out of their canoe. They had many years of tenting, and then moved up to several campers. They loved their Bethany Tent Trailer and bought a Reniell boat as they were into water skiing with the family, along with dirt biking and snowmobiling. Most of their outdoor trips included family as well as grandmas and grandpas on both sides.
Rodney was blessed with many years of having the greatest family ever.
He is survived by his wife, Marsha Eastvold, Pocatello, children: Dori Hawkins, Troy Eastvold, both of Pocatello, Trent (Kelli) Eastvold, Blackfoot, Dana (Brad) Fairchild, Pocatello; brothers, Mark (Clarice) Eastvold, Preston and Mike (Bobette) Eastvold, Pocatello; grandchildren, Tausha Dee and Hailee Jo Eastvold, Amber Rose and Steven Cash Hawkins, Justin Lee Starnes, Joshua Trenton Eastvold, Nicole Marie and Conner Bradley Fairchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harris Eastvold.
Inurnment of ashes will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Mountain View Cemetery

James A. Brennen
James A. Brennen, 76, of the Shotgun area of Island Park, died Friday, August 7, 2009 at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg of natural causes. He was born January 5, 1933 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Edward and Edna Roth Brennen.
He married Rosalee Updike on November 28, 1952 in Twin Falls. Two sons, Brad and Kent were born to this marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Rosalee Brennen, of Island Park; sons, Brad (Colleen) Brennen and Kent (Lisa) Brennen of Twin Falls; grandsons, Brad J. Brennen and Brandon Brennen of Twin Falls; a granddaughter Sarah (Ryan) Sattelberg of Texas; great-grandchildren Audrey and Jackson Sattelberg of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Robert Brennen.
At his request, disposition was by cremation under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home.
A private family memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
Larry Hultz
Larry Hultz passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 in Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
Hultz owned and operated Yellowstone Drain and Sewer and was a longtime West Yellowstone resident.
At the time of his death, he was a Mack's Inn resident.
