Katherine Nadine Bolland Fredericksen
ASHTON — Katherine Nadine Bolland Fredericksen, 66, of Ashton died September 26 at her home of natural causes. She was born to Herb and Margaret Bolland on July 9, 1942 in Ashton.
She attended school in Ashton, Idaho and graduated from North Fremont High School in 1960. She married Larry Fredericksen on July 3, 1960 in Ashton, and they raised a family of four children.
Nadine served as a Dietary Manager for the Ashton Nursing Home for more than 20 years. She touched the lives of both the residents of the nursing home and their families who would come to visit.
Nadine enjoyed children and working with the elderly at the nursing home. She held her grandchildren especially dear and greatly enjoyed their company. She was especially fond of preparing meals for her family and friends and found many, many people around her table. She lovingly cared for all who entered her home. Nadine held firm the promises of the gospel and lived her life with a focus on eternal life according to John 3:16. She cherished spending time with her family and maintained a strong faith in Jesus Christ, her Savior.
She is survived by her husband, Larry of Ashton; children, Debra Jo McConnell of Savannah, GA., Nancy Kim Jameson of Olympia, WA., Gregory Todd Fredericksen of Seattle, WA., and Christian H Fredericksen of Rigby; sisters, Betty Jean Mason and Trenna Bolland both of Idaho Falls; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Leroy Bolland.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 29 at the Ashton Christian Fellowship, 784 Baker Road, with Pastor Rich Laux officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Baxter Funeral Home, 717 Main Street, in Ashton, and Monday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Ashton Pineview Cemetery.
Ila Kirkham
Ila Elizabeth Johnston Mower Kirkham, 91, of Ashton, died Thursday, October 9, 2008, at Ashton Living Center of natural causes.
She was born March 21, 1917, in Salt Lake City, to James George and Edith Eliza Huggins Johnston. She was raised in Riverton, Utah and attended school there. She married Clarence E. Mower in 1934 at Marysville. They later divorced. She married Alfred N. Kirkham in 1984 in Ashton. He died May 1, 1993.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She worked with the Senior Citizens delivering meals. She enjoyed raising flowers, sewing,embroidery, and she loved to clean. She cleaned homes for several people in the Ashton area, including Dr. Krueger and Leah Nichols. She enjoyed camping and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, LaVoy (Jan) Mower of Rexburg, John R. "Jack" Mower of Island Park, Thelma (Frank) Stacey of Idaho Falls, Ralph Mower of Salt Lake City; a brother, Eugene (Ila) Johnston of Ontario, Oregon; a sister, Deloris Olson of Logan, Utah; 17 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, a son Francis, three brothers, three sisters and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, at the Ashton Third Ward Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery
under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home.
Ruth Bratt
ASHTON — Ruth Marsden Bratt, 91, of Idaho Falls and formerly of Ashton, died Sunday, October 19, in Idaho Falls of causes incident to age.
She was born June 5, 1917, in Tooele, Utah, to Leo Curtis and Mary A. Gordon Marsden. She was raised in Squirrel. She attended high school in Rexburg and graduated from Madison High School. She graduated from Ricks College with a teaching degree. She taught school for one year at Farnum and another year at Highland.
She married Francis Walter Bratt on October 10, 1940, in Ashton. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served for 25 years in the Primary and Relief Society organizations. She loved sewing, gardening and quilting. She gave donated many of her quilts to people in need and to be raffled in church bazaars and other activities. She served as a 4-H leader for many years.
She is survived by her daughter Sheryl Bainbridge of Pleasant View, Utah; a son Jerry (Paulette) Bratt of Idaho Falls; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Francis, a son Roger Bratt, three sisters, a brother and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 24, at the Ashton 4th Ward Chapel, with Bishop Hal Harrigfeld officiating.The family will receive friends Friday for one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Ashton Pineview Cemetery

Buck Thomas
ASHTON — Marvin "Buck" Elliot Thomas, 74, of Ashton, died Sunday, October 19, 2008, at his home of natural causes.
He was born October 8, 1934, in Idaho Falls, to Linden Norman and Effel Marie Jensen Thomas. He graduated from Blackfoot High School. He married Beverlee Ann Merrick on November 13, 1954 in Ashton.
He worked as an auto mechanic and owned and operated Buck’s Auto Repair in Ashton. He served in the National Guard and was activated during the Berlin Crisis with his unit. He served at Fort Lewis in Washington. He was a member of the Ashton Community United Methodist Church. He served as Grand Master of Idaho for the IOOF in 1974-1975. He served for 25 years on the Home Board of the IOOF.
He is survived by his wife Beverlee of Ashton; children, Charles (Connie) Thomas of Idaho Falls, Cyndy (Brian) Klepinger of Denver, Colorado; siblings, Darwin (Doris) Thomas of Pascagoula, Mississippi, Delbert (Jan) Thomas of Salt Lake City, Keith (Roxie) Thomas of Lolo, Montana, Elizabeth Thomas of Salt Lake City; grandchildren, Katie (Chase) Burke, Heidi (Josh) Lanier, Alex Thomas; great-grandchildren, Isabelle Burke and Marley Lanier. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Ross Thomas.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 25 at the Ashton Methodist Church with Pastor John Blower officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Ashton Pineview Cemetery
with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 89. Memorial contributions may be made to the Methodist Men Organization of the Ashton Community United Methodist Church, 178 S 5, Ashton, ID. 83420, or a charity of choice.
Ingrid Klamt
Ingrid Klamt, 107, of Galesburg, North Dakota, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008, in Fargo, North Dakota, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
She was born on June 2, 1901, in Norway to Hans and Marthe Jensen Andresen. The family immigrated to the United States in 1904. Ingrid grew up in Galesburg and was educated there. She attended college at Moorhead, MN, Mayville, ND and Valley City, ND. She taught school at Whitman, ND, Sherwood, ND, Dazey, ND and Galesburg. Ingrid moved to Ashton, Idaho in 1930 and taught school there until 1946.
She married Joseph D. Klamt on June 8, 1932 at Galesburg, and they then returned to Ashton. She and Joe purchased Teton Pharmacy in 1946.
Her greatest joys were her dear friends, her roses, and enjoying morning coffee looking at the Tetons. They retired in 1967 and traveled all over the world until Joe’s death in 1974. Ingrid then moved back to Galesburg and continued globe-trotting with her sister Esther Johnson. Ingrid resided in Galesburg until two weeks prior to her death.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Dr. Robert (Valene) Klamt of Eagle, Idaho, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her parents, four sisters and four brothers.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2008 at the Elm River Lutheran Church in Galesburg, North Dakota. A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date at the Pineview Cemetery
in Ashton.
Clyde White
ASHTON — Clyde Wilfred White, 78, of Ashton, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at Madison Memorial Hospital. He was born February 25, 1930, in Farnum, Idaho to George H. and Marian Evelyn Bratt White. He was raised and attended grade school in Farnum. He attended high school in Ashton.
He married Delma Seeley on September 4, 1960, in Reno, Nevada. After their marriage they moved to Fresno, California where he worked in construction as a finish blade operator. They later moved to Blackfoot where he worked for HK Contractors as a heavy equipment operator. After his retirement they moved back to Ashton.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and snowmobiler. He enjoyed camping and the outdoors. He raised English springer spaniels and quarter horses.
He is survived by his wife, Delma of Ashton; children, Clyde Garry (Geneal) White of Malad, Patty (Jerry) Christensen of Kennewick, Washington, Tawna (Bob) Gutierrez of Tooele, Utah; a sister, Marian Albrethsen of Ashton; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Afton Newbold.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, at the Ashton Fourth Ward chapel with Bishop Hal Harrigfeld officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery
under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home.
Albert Scafe
ASHTON — Albert Miles Scafe, 91, of Ashton, died Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at the Ashton Living Center of causes incident to age.
He was born May 15, 1917 in Bangor, Wisconsin to Ray Stephen and Isabelle May Indahl Scafe. He grew up on the family farm I the Bangor-Bells Coulee area. During his childhood he went to public school in Bells Coulee. As a young adult, he worked in various parts of Wisconsin as a logger and made rail road ties and fences.
In 1939, Albert came to Idaho "in his Model A Ford and 35 cents in his pocket." He worked on various farms in the Squirrel area. In 1941 he began working on the Walter and Anna Bergman farm.
In July 1942, he was drafted into the United States Air Force. He married Helen Bergman on December 25, 1944, in a Lutheran Church in Tacoma, Washington. Two days later he was assigned to Southern California; three months later he was stationed in Salt Lake City. On both occasions Helen traveled to join him. He also served in the Fifth Division in the South Pacific as a radio operator. He was skilled in receiving and sending messages with the International Morse Code. He was discharged from the Air Force as a sergeant in February 1946.
After the war, he returned to work on the family farm in the Grainville area with Helen’s parents. He farmed until 1978, when his older son, Walter, assumed ownership and continued the family farming tradition. In 1998, Albert and Helen moved into Ashton.
After his retirement, he worked as a self-employed mechanic, specializing in hay baler repair. He was also interested in inventing. His inventions would improve people’s lives on the farm and in other areas. His ideas ranged from an automatic irrigation valve to harnessing ocean waves for electricity. If people needed and unusual machinery part, or had a question on how to fix something, Albert was always excited to help. He was always interested in "tweaking" things to make them just a bit better.
Albert was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Squirrel. He was an active member of the congregations in Squirrel and Ashton. He served as a Church Council member, trustee, Elder and usher.
He was a member of the Squirrel Club. He also enjoyed attending farm auctions.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen, of Ashton; five children, Walter (Shirley) Scafe of Grainville, Mary (Wally) Gustav of Lebanon, Oregon, Doris (Chris) Bemis of Seattle, Washington, Ruth Parlier of San Diego, California, John (Kathy) Scafe of Ashton; a sister, Isabelle Kastenschmidt of Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, a brother, and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 3, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashton. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Baxter Funeral Home in Ashton, and Monday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery.
Richard Strissel
ISLAND PARK — Richard L. Strissel of Henry's Lake passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2008 in Issaquah, WA. He was 71 years old.
Dick was born on January 29, 1937. Due to a blizzard which prevented a 40 mile trip to the Hospital in Havre, he was born in the hotel in Rudyard, Montana His trip home to the farm was in a horse-drawn sled during yet another snowstorm when the horses were given their head and went directly to the barn first. Dick loved to tell stories and I think he liked this one best.
He graduated from Montana State University in 1959 with a degree in Engineering Physics and spent his entire career working for Boeing in Seattle in various space programs. He worked on the Lunar Orbital which circled the moon as a prelude to the actual moon landing and several other secret programs. Also during his career he traveled to Kwajalein Island, Hawaii, Israel, England and Germany and many places in the US. physics and went to work for Boeing as an engineer that same year.
He met and married Marlene Stout in 1961 and they raised three children in Bellevue, WA. Dick was a family man, always putting them first, generous with his time and talents on their behalf, with building additions, kitchen remodels down to time spent playing cribbage, teaching them to fish, hunt, and taking them on extensive camper family trips. When Dick retired from Boeing in 1998, he and Marlene moved to Henry's Lake. He loved living at Henry's lake, always picking up his camera at the sight of a moose in the yard, beautiful sunsets, or elk on the mountains. His family will enjoy his legacy of photos for years to come.
Dick dedicated a lot of his time and personal energy to the Henry's Lake community, serving as Board Member and President of his subdivision's homeowner's association, researching solutions to water problems, and attending local meetings concerning growth, water issues, and more. His photos were published in the community's local newspaper, the Island Park News.
Dick was a devoted Christian and he and Marlene made many friends in West Yellowstone at the Community Protestant Church. There again, Dick used his talents and and generosity on various projects, serving God by working in His church.
Survivors include Dick's wife, Marlene, of Issaquah, WA., Kristen Strissel of Sammamish, WA., Lisa and Carl Chidiac of Sammamish, Rick and Tracy Strissel of Ferndale, WA., and five grandchildren, Joseph, Anthony and Annemarie Chidiac, and Ava and Rose Strissel. His sister predeceased him in August 2008.
Burial with family members attending will be Friday morning, November 7, followed by a memorial service at 1:30 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bellevue, WA. Friends are invited to attend.
The family suggests remembrances to the youth program at the Community Protestant Church, PO Box 428, West Yellowstone, MT 59758.
Arrangements are by Flintofts Funeral Home and Crematory in Issaquah.
