Nolan Heward
Nolan A. Heward, 68, of Ashton, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. He was born November 4, 1939, in Cascade and was raised by Joseph and Edna Heward.
He graduated from North Fremont High School in 1958. After high school he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. While stationed in California he met and married his wife, Renée Wilson. They were married on September 22, 1962 in Burbank, California. Their marriage was solemnized in the Los Angeles LDS temple on December 14, 1968. They have enjoyed their 45 years of marriage.
Nolan owned and operated Heward Machine Shop in Marysville for 38 years.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years. He also served as bishop of the Ashton Third Ward. He enjoyed being involved with and serving in the community.
He is survived by his wife Renée of Ashton; children, Kathleen Hafen of Farmington, Utah, Liz (Nate) Spencer of Nampa, Joe (Danice) Heward of Thayne, Wyoming, John "Charlie" (Tiffany) Heward of Norfolk, Virginia; a sister Loanda (Ron) Ricketts of Deer Lake, Washington; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 4, at the Ashton Third Ward chapel. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. both times at the church. Burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery
under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 89.
Sylvia Vollweiler
In loving memory of Sylvia Vollweiler - October 21, 1948 - August 15, 2008
ISLAND PARK — Sylvia Vollweiler, a longtime and beloved member of the Island Park community, passed away at her cabin in Shotgun on Friday, August 15, 2008. She was 59 years old.
Sylvia was born on October 21, 1948 in Champagne, Ill., the daughter of Francis Eugene Cope and Juanita Pearl Cope.
Since Francis was a member of the military, the family lived in many areas of the U. S. and spent a few years in Germany.
The family eventually settled in Caldwell, where Sylvia graduated high school. She then went on to work for companies such as Ore-Ida Foods and Household Finance before moving to Island Park in 1975.
Sylvia worked at the 1st Security Bank in West Yellowstone and the Targhee National Forest’s Island Park Ranger District. She served on the advisory board of the Bear End Day Care Center in West Yellowstone.
She and Tim lived in American Falls for four years, where she was an enthusiastic participant in many community activities, including those involving the chamber of commerce.
Sylvia was very active in the Island Park community, as a member and/or part of the leadership of the Fugowee Snowmobile Club, Island Park Quilt Guild, Island Park Pool League, Targhee Women’s Club, Island Park Library Friends, Island Park QRU, and Island Park Area Chamber of Commerce. She founded the local chapter of the Red Hat Society, known as the Red Hat Mountain Mommas. She served on the Fremont County Fair Board.
An avid snowmobiler, Sylvia participated in the Ol’ Ladies Snowmobile Race for 18 years. She loved boating and enjoyed many outdoor activities that Island Park offers. She also loved her dogs and photography, and won awards for her photography at the Fremont County Fair.
Because of her many years of service to the community, the Island Park News community achievement awards committee named Sylvia “Woman of the Year” in 2004.
Sylvia took great joy in organizing a Christmas Eve service at the Little Church in the Pines. She did this for 13 years, making it a cherished part of the community’s holiday season.
Sylvia and her husband, Tim, owned Island Park Services and were partners in Targhee Construction and Island Park Sand and Gravel.
Everyone who knew Sylvia, “Sly,” will affirm that she was a straight shooter in all matters and always willing to chip in when her help was needed.
Sylvia is survived by her husband of 15 years, Tim Vollweiler, her daughter, Abby Todd, and stepdaughters Kortney (Thomas) Hinckley and Nichole (Matthew) Carlton.
A celebration of Sylvia’s life is set for 11 a. m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the Little Church in the Pines at Mack’s Inn, with Pastor Ted Pierce officiating.

Keith Egbert
Keith Doyle Egbert, 52, of Ashton died on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at his home of natural causes.
Keith was born on July 21, 1956 in Ashton to Herschel Doyle and Deanna Burt Egbert. He attended schools in Terreton and graduated from West Jefferson High School. After graduating he attended Idaho State Technical College in Pocatello.
He married Julia Ann Daniels on June 14, 1975 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He worked as a farmer and as a truck driver. He loved his family, photography, and spending time with his grandson Nate.
He is survived by his wife Julia of Ashton; son Jayson (Nikki) Egbert of Idaho Falls; mother Deanna Egbert of Mud Lake; brothers Monte (Stephanie) Egbert, Mike (Susan) Egbert, Barry (Noelle) Egbert — all of Idaho Falls; a sister, Chris (Kelly) Koefed of Salt Lake City, Utah; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by his father.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 25 at the Ashton 4th Ward LDS Chapel with Bishop Hal Harrigfeld officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church prior to services. Services are under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home.
Col. (Ret) John A. Rakestraw dies
TEMPLE, TEXAS — John A. Rakestraw, 82, of Temple died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 22, 2008 at his residence.
He was a former summer pastor at the Little Church in the Pines in Island Park. A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, at First United Methodist Church in Little River with the Rev. Dr. Linda Mitchell and the Rev. Mary Katherine Morn officiating. The Rev. George Price sang the special music and Judy Gotcher delivered the eulogy. Burial with full honors was at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery
in San Antonio.
Rakestraw was born July 28, 1926 in Houston to Robert W. and Lois (Frost) Rakestraw. He was reared and educated in LaPorte where he graduated from LaPorte High School. He completed a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Texas Tech, a Master of Divinity from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, and a Doctor of Ministry from New York Theological Seminary.
He married Johnnie Margaret Price on January 24, 1950. He entered the Methodist ministry in 1947 and served churches in the Texas Conference, the North Texas Conference, the Northwest Texas Conference and the Central Texas Conference. In December, 1965 he entered the U. S. Army as a chaplain and served at several bases in the United States, Germany and Panama. He completed two year-long tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired from the Army in 1984 with the rank of Colonel.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and married Linda Rogers on April 12, 2002. Survivors include his wife, Linda Rakestraw of Temple, two sons, John A. Rakestraw Jr. and wife, Mary Katherine Morn of Arlington, Virginia, Charles Rakestraw of Longview, Washington and one daughter, Jo Anna Smith and husband, Mike, of Sumner, Washington. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Michael Smith and wife, Nicole of Abilene, Justin Smith of Columbia, Washington, Caleb Rakestraw-Morn of Arlington, Virginia, Laura Rakestraw of Bellingham, Washington and Eric Rakestraw of Longview, Washington and three great-grandchildren, Micaela, Taryn and Riley Ann Smith of Abilene.

Mel Ports
Mel O. Ports, 76, of Las Vegas, passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008.
He was born July 7, 1932, in Fresno, Calif., and was a 36-year resident of Nevada. Mel was an airline pilot, and retired from the Flying Tigers Line after 30 wonderful years. He loved flying planes and remembered his time with Tigers fondly. He was very proud of serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1952 to 1955.
Mel lived a happy and full life, pursuing his many interests and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Terri; his daughters, Peggy (Mac) Hamlen and Patty (Matt) DiOrio; his son, Michael (Malisse) Ports; stepdaughter, Lynn (Jim) Brown; stepson, Gary Oliver; grandchildren, Theron Hamlen, Trina (Steve) Ray, Christopher DiOrio and Kennedy Ports; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery
in Boulder City. A reception will follow at the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St., Boulder City, NV 89005.

Margie Carlson
ASHTON — Marjorie Rose Carlson, 60, of Marysville, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at her home after a long struggle with cancer. She was born August 4, 1948 in Lihue, Hawaii.
Her parents are Ernie Menehune and Jerry (Bill) Carl. She attended school in Arizona and graduated from high school in Scottsdale, Arizona.
She married Ernest Leland Carlson on June 10, 1970, in Elko, Nevada. They made their home in Marysville. She was involved in several businesses including C&B Timber, Carlson Logging, the Flower Barn, and Mountain Mercantile, and a restaurant business. She was a strong supporter of the timber industry.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She enjoyed raising various farm animals and being in the outdoors. She was a Polynesian dancer, enjoyed arts and crafts, painting, fishing, hunting, cooking, sewing, crocheting, and working as a florist. She loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest of Marysville; children, Darin (April) Carlson of Wendell, Angela Carlson of Ashton, Lisa (Joe) Pilgrim of Ashton, Katrina (Chad) Sockseth of Layton, Utah; father Ernie Menehune of Tucson, Arizona; mother Jerry (Bill) Carl of Flippin, Arkansas; siblings, Eraina Kennett, Carolann (Richard) Wick, Patrick (Sandra) Menehune, Little Ernie (Tina) Menehune, Kealie Menehune all of Tucson, Gloria Jean Belinger of Virginia, Michael Carl of Coeur D’Alene; 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Carlson and a daughter, Debbie Carlson.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, September 19, at the Ashton 3rd Ward Chapel with Bishop Kevin Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Baxter Funeral Home, 717 Main Street, in Ashton, and Friday from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Ashton Pineview Cemetery.
Melvin Lee Atwood
ASHTON — Melvin Lee Atwood, 82, died Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Madison Memorial Hospital of natural causes. He was born December 6, 1925, in Wendell to Clayton L. and Florence E. Sensebough Atwood. He attended school in Jerome.
He married Lola J. Stone on March 18, 1943, in Mountain Home. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Oakland LDS Temple. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He served in the Navy and was detached to the Marine Corps as a Corpsman. He served in Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
After returning from the war, he went to work for Union Pacific Railroad. In 1954, the railroad transferred him to Crane, Oregon. In 1959, he left the railroad and went to work for Harney County as the bridge foreman. He later moved to Eugene, Oregon and went to work for International Paper Company (IP). He retired from IP in 1989.
He moved to Ashton in 1993. In Ashton he drove the Senior Citizen’s van and was the site director until he passed away.
He is survived by his wife Lola of Ashton; children, Jerry (Lavern) Atwood of Eugene, Oregon, Gary (Lee) Atwood of Springfield, Oregon, Kay Clark of Eugene, Gaylena (Charles) Tuchardt of Lebanon, Oregon, Daryl (Naomi) Atwood of Sweet Home, Oregon; ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 3, at the Ashton Third Ward LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Friday at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery
under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ashton Senior Citizens.
