Edythe Weerts of Ashton dies
Edythe Weerts, 86, of Ashton, died at her home at the Ashton Living Center, on Tuesday, March 11, 2008.
She was born on a farm in Squirrel on May 13, 1921 to W. L. "Lute" Sheetz and Myrtle Hattie Sheetz. Her family moved to the family farm south of Ashton when she was 2 years old. She lived there until moving to the Ashton Living Center in October 2006.
She married John Weerts from Fairbury, Nebraska on May 3, 1941, in Ashton. He died on September 2, 1994. Their only child, Karren, was born in December 1941.
Edythe’s passion in life, and her calling, was teaching children about the love of Jesus. She did this for more than 50 years.
She enjoyed traveling and was able to travel to Japan, Germany, Israel, and Egypt. One of her greatest adventures was riding a camel up and down Mt. Sinai while on a tour of the Holy Land.
She is survived by her children, Karren and Lowell Nygaard of Ashton; grandchildren, Christopher and Andrea Nygaard of Schererville, Indiana; great-granddaughter, Madelynn Christina Nygaard of Schererville, Indiana; and cousins, Roberta Lenz of Ashton, Dorothy Bergman of Squirrel, and Annie Grant of Pocatello. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, sister Thelma, and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashton. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Baxter Funeral Home, 717 Main Street, in Ashton, and Saturday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate Memorial Funds be sent to the Ashton Living Center, P.O. Box 838, Ashton, Idaho, 83420 in Edythe’s memory.
Donald R. Bjork
Don Bjork, 67, of Bozeman embarked on his next adventure on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, following a challenging and courageous battle with cancer.
Don was born in Great Falls on Feb. 13, 1941, to Roy Bjork and Helen Standish Bjork. Don's family moved to Ennis in 1951, living at the MPC Madison Power Plant.
In Ennis, Don and his life-long buddy Tom Morgan hunted, fished and caused mischief, including a few near misses involving chemistry.
Don graduated from Ennis High in 1959 and from Montana State University with a master's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1965. After graduation, he married Diane Horen. Don's children, Russell and Rebecca, were born of this union and brought to Don a source of pleasure and pride. Don and Dede divorced in 1976.
Don met Jan, his "other half," at MSU while teaching Electrical Engineering. They married on March 21, 1981. They complemented each other in every aspect of their lives.
Don was a mentor and friend to many of his colleagues and students. A group of friends, who shared Don's passion for fun and travel, jokingly calling themselves the "Montana Yacht Club," became Don's extended family and the source of great times and fond memories.
The MYC introduced Don to his favorite destination, the Caribbean, and to the joy of sailing. He also enjoyed flying, pack trips, skiing, golf and reading and never lost his desire to learn new things.
Don will be missed by his wife Jan of Bozeman; daughter Becky Bjork of McCall, Idaho; son Russ Bjork and grandchildren Madison and Cody of Boise, Idaho; sister Mary Ellen Mead of Wenatchee, Wash.; cousins, nieces and nephews and many, many great friends.
At Don's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service.
Cathy Hunter
EGIN -- Cathy Ann Parker Hunter, 48, of Egin, died March 4, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nev., of an apparent heart attack.
She was born March 18, 1959, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Laurence Ray and Marjorie Kay Lefford Parker. She attended schools in St. Anthony and graduated from South Fremont High School in 1977. She graduated from Eastern Idaho Technical College in 1979 with an associate degree in dental assisting.
On July 6, 1984, she married Lauchie LaVar Hunter in St. Anthony. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Neil Kunz in St. Anthony and taught dental assisting at Eastern Idaho Technical College. She was a certified dental assistant for 30 years; worked with her husband in their business, Parker's Septic Tank Service; and owned Henry's Fork Candles.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. Cathy was well known to people in the community.
Survivors include her husband, LaVar of Egin; children, Colby Hunter and Lindsey Hunter, both of Egin, Casey (Melissa) Hunter of Pocatello, Jaxson (Kristy) Hunter of Rexburg, Joshua (Angela) Hunter of Plano and Johnie (Jim) Taylor of St. Ignatius, Mont.; father, Laurence Ray (Bobbie) Parker of St. George, Utah; siblings, Larry (Donna) Parker of Bountiful, Utah, Mark Parker of Las Vegas, Nev., Tracy (Pattie) Parker of Riverton, Utah, Patricia "Tish" (Alan) Jackson of Bluffdale, Utah, and John (Julie) Parker of Menominee Falls, Wis.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marjorie; and a son, Jerimy.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, at the Egin LDS Ward. The family will visit with friends from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Bert Flamm Mortuary, 581 E. First North in St. Anthony, and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday before services at the church. Burial will be in the Parker Cemetery.
Bette Staten
Bette Ruth Rapp Staten, 82, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Mount Vernon Assisted Living Center of causes incident to age. She was under the care of Aspen Home Health & Hospice.
Bette was born February 18, 1926, in Idaho Falls, to LeRoy Arthur Rapp and Vada Heiner Durrant Rapp. She attended schools in the Idaho Falls area.
On April 2, 1943, she married Leland Stacy Staten in Pocatello. Together, they had three children. Bette worked as a cosmetologist, cosmetology instructor, and as a State Board Examiner.
Bette was a past president of the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary. She was a member of the Island Park Historical Society and the Fugowee Snowmobile Club. She enjoyed family outdoor activities, crocheting, and entertaining family and friends. Bette and Leland loved to travel and especially enjoyed their time share in Mazatlan. They took trips to Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas and Alaska, and loved the "loop" they took around the country through Florida and Canada.
Survivors include her husband, Leland S. Staten of Idaho Falls; daughters, Vada M. Roberts of Shelley and B. Jeanna Staten of Idaho Falls; son, Richard L. (Mary Lou) Staten of Shelley; brothers, Marshall D. Rapp of Lincoln and Lamarr A. Rapp of Post Falls; sister, Nelda J. Hart of Snohomish, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bonnie M. Ball; and a grandson, Shawn Smith.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Ave. in Idaho Falls. The family will visit with friends for one hour Tuesday before services at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the heart program at LDS Hospital, 8th Avenue and C Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84143.
Bob Rowe
Robert L. Rowe, 71, of Island Park, passed away in Idaho Falls on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, after a short and courageous fight with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Born to Alex Rowe and Katherine Raymond on May 9, 1936 in Greeley, CO., he was raised and went to school in Pocatello.
After high school graduation he worked a year for the railroad before enlisting in the Navy, where he served his country for four years.
He returned to Pocatello and continued his education at Idaho State University, graduating as an electrical engineer. He then began working in various nuclear plants in Utah and Nevada. In 1965 he went to work at the INL.
In the 1970’s he and lifelong friend, Ron Kynaston, began building cabins in Island Park on the weekends.
On May 19, 1984 he married his best friend and beloved wife, Sandy. Then in 1987 Bob and Sandy purchased land in Island Park and began work on their dream home. Upon retirement from the INL in 1995, Bob started working full time on the completion of their home, with Sandy joining him on weekends until her retirement in 2001.
Together Bob and Sandy enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, pool, their children, grandchildren and their life on the mountain.
Bob was a member of the Elk’s Lodge No. 1416 for 33 years.
Bob will forever be remembered by his family and friends for his strength, strong values, and quick-witted humor. He was filled with integrity and the kind of man that people looked up to.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sandy, of 24 years; sons Kenny (Denice) Rowe of Blackfoot, and John (Gwen) Hernandez of Boise; daughters Laura Hernandez-Rowe (Robert) Burt of Syracuse, UT, Erin Rowe Lowe and Bruce Ginkle of West Point, UT; daughter- in-law Teresa Rowe of Blackfoot; thirteen grandchildren, two great granddaughters and sister, Audrey (Richard) Burt.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Rowe, grandson, Casey Hernandez, his father Alex Rowe, mother and stepfather Otho “Oats” and Katherine Raymond, and sister, Beverly Doyle.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2008 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 27, and again from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery. Military rites will be presented by the American Legion Stewart Hoover Post #23. The Blackfoot Elks Lodge #1416 will present the Tribute of Affection.
Jerald Schiess
POCATELLO/ISLAND PARK — Jerald Jacob Schiess died on Monday, March 24, 2008, after a multi-year battle with cancer.
Jerry was born to Jacob John and Lola Palmer Schiess on April 25, 1941 (his mother's birthday), at Old General Hospital in Pocatello.
Jerry went through the local Pocatello School system and enlisted in the United States Navy in August 1958. He spent the next three years and 10 months assigned to the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific, and spent much time in the Formosa, Japan, and the Philippines. He was an embassy guard while in Formosa. He received an honorable discharge in 1962.
In 1962, after leaving the military, Schiess became a member of the Pocatello Police Department, achieving the rank of detective captain, retiring as the chief of detectives in 1984.
Jerry married the love of his life, Kathryn Ann Banyard, on October 30, 1982.
After retiring from the Pocatello Police Department in 1984, Jerry became a fraud investigative manager for a major insurance company, covering Idaho, Utah, and Montana, retiring in 1999.
At that time Jerry enjoyed spending time with his beloved family in the family home in Island Park, built in 1986. Jerry loved his grandchildren and attending all their activities, especially in Island Park and Wade Lake. His favorite fishing spot was Hebgen Lake with his buddy, Curt Coman.
Jerry and Kathy enjoyed going to Mesquite, Nevada, every January, taking his sweet mother, Lola, with them.
Jerry is survived by his wife and one son, Jerry Lee Schiess, Hollywood, California; stepson, Craig (Kelly) Banyard, grandchildren, Nicholas and Elisa; stepdaughter, Lisa (John) Ganske, grandchildren, Brandon and Carly; one beloved sister, Lolane (Donald) Andra; and many nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his father and mother and one son, Monty.
Many years before his death, Jerry became a born-again Christian and established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He loved the study of prophecy, and Monday night he and Kathy enjoyed watching Jack Van-Impe on Trinity Broadcasting Network. Jerry attended the River of Life Church in Pocatello.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 27, 2008, in the River of Life Church, Pocatello, with Pastor Rod Enos conducting. Memorials may be given in Jerry's memory to the Bannock Humane Society, 850 Barton Road, Pocatello, Idaho 83204.
