Emily Ellen Grant Whaley
Emily Ellen Grant Whaley died Tuesday, December 25, in Pocatello. She was 98 years old.
She was born May 8, 1909 in Valley Junction, Iowa, to John and Florence Kerr Grant. At a young age the family moved to a homestead farm in Iroquois, South Dakota, where Emily attended a rural, one room school.
Emily studied nursing at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing until her graduation in 1931. Emily spent most of her nursing career as a public health nurse in Minneapolis and Wyoming.
In 1940, Emily married Jay Whaley and the following year they had a son, Mack, in San Diego, California. In 1949, the Whaley family moved to Island Park. Here they bought a small grocery store and cabin resort, Robin's Roost, which Emily ran while Jay worked for the state on a road maintenance crew. They ran the business for 35 years until their retirement.
Emily was widowed in 1994 and moved to Pocatello, to be closer to her son. Emily enjoyed playing cards, reading, gardening, cooking, and going for walks. Emily will be missed by many.
Emily is survived by: son Mack (Mary) Whaley of Pocatello, granddaughter Heather (Matt) Bergstrom of Portland, OR, stepson Stephen (Donna) Whaley of Anderson, CA, step grandson Brent (Sheree) Whaley of Redding, CA, step granddaughter Eileen (Michael) Crawford of El Dorado Hills, CA, step granddaughter Evelyn (John) Grimes of Anderson, CA, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jay, a Grandson Cory, three sisters and two brothers.
Services will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, December 29, at Bert Flamm Mortuary (581 East 1st North in St. Anthony, Idaho.) The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 - 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Targhee Cemetery
at Henry’s Lake.
In lieu of flowers, Emily requested that donations be made to the Idaho Youth Ranch, 5465 W. Irving St., Boise, Idaho, 83706, or the charity of your choice.
Austin Wright
Austin Lee Wright, 20, of Ashton, died Friday, January 11, 2008, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born September 13, 1987, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Angela Hathaway and Ryan Lee Wright. He attended school in Middleton, Idaho, Teton City, and Ashton. He graduated from North Fremont High School in 2006.
He attended Boise State University, and at the time of his death he was attending Idaho State University studying to become a physical therapist.
He worked at Dave’s Supermarket in Ashton, at Boise State University, and was working in the nursing department at Idaho State University at the time of his death.He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He loved to paintball and enjoyed camping with his family, and fishing. He loved being with his friends, and especially spending time with his brothers and sister. He played football in junior high and for the North Fremont Huskies.
He is survived by his mother, Angela Hathaway Robertson, father, Ryan (Angie) Wright; brothers, Braiden Wright, Colton Wright, Teegan Wright; sisters, Sadie Jo Wright, Baylie Sessions, Brenna Wright all of Ashton; grandparents, Donlee and Gaye Hathaway of Teton City, Bill and Trisha Mason of Wilford, and Curtis Wright of Driggs.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, at the Ashton LDS Stake Center, 516 North 2nd Street. The family will meet with friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 to 10:30 a.m., both times at the Stake Center. Burial will be in the Ashton Pineview Cemetery
under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home of Ashton.
Mindy L. McCulley killed in Island Park accident
Mindy Leigh McCulley was born on April 23, 1983, to Wayne and Debbie (Kuther) McCulley in Grangeville. Her family moved to Lewiston when she was 4 years old. Mindy attended St. Stanislaus Tri-Parish Grade School, Sacajawea Junior High School, and she graduated from Lewiston High School in 2001.
Mindy later moved to Boise where she attended Boise State University. While attending college, Mindy worked full time as a property manager at Logger Creek Apartments.
Mindy moved to Jackson Hole, Wyo., in September 2006 continuing her career in property management with the Snake River Sporting Club until she moved once again to Sun Valley, Idaho, during the month of September 2007. She was making the move to Big Sky, Mont., to work for the Yellowstone Club when she was killed in a tragic car accident in Island Park.
In addition to her love of resort town living, Mindy enjoyed decorating and art. She had a flair for fantastic clothes and appreciated fine food. Mindy was also at home in the outdoors, whether it was trapshooting with her dad (which she absolutely loved) or hiking and fishing with family and friends. Mindy was so active. She enjoyed skiing, teaching spin classes and she completed her first marathon in San Diego this past June. She was even contemplating a second one in the near future.
Survivors include her mom, Debbie of Clarkston; her dad, Wayne and his wife Kathi of Lewiston; her sister, Megan of Boise; grandmothers, Doris Kuther, Cottonwood and Chloe McCulley, Grangeville; aunts and uncles include Diane and Wayne Wimer, Seattle; Doug and Terri Kuther, Denver; Dave and Donna Christiansen, Idaho Falls; Dar and Wayne Forsmann, Cottonwood; Denise and Roy Uhlenkott, Cottonwood; Jack McCulley, Grangeville; and Wanda and Arie Koole of Grangeville.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Len Kuther and Marshall McCulley; aunt, Janice Wilke; and uncles, Dean Kuther and Ron Wilke.
A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lewiston. Burial will follow at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens. A gathering to celebrate Mindy's life will begin at noon at the Masonic Temple, 1122 18th Ave., in Lewiston. Memorial contributions can be made to: Willow Center, P.O. Kevin Egbert
Kevin Call Egbert, 47, of Ashton, died Thursday, January 17, 2008, at his home, of natural causes. He was born March 21, 1960, in Ashton, to Z. J. and Peggy Call Egbert. He attended school in Ashton and graduated from North Fremont High School in 1978. He later received his Associates Degree from Ricks College.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. He served a mission for the church in the Australia Brisbane Mission.
He married Dawn Hibbert on August 4, 1982, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They made their home in Ashton, where he worked as a farmer. He enjoyed farming and recreating with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn; children, Carlie (Joshua) Barlow, Alex Egbert, Ashley Egbert, and Amber Egbert; his parents, Z. J. and Peggy Egbert; brothers, Richel (Jackie) Egbert, David (Lori) Egbert, Alan (Marla) Egbert; sisters, Rhonda (Russ) Pueblo, Holly (Mearle) Marsh, LaRee (Byron) Cloward.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 21, at the Ashton LDS Stake Center, with Bishop Michael Davidson officiating. The family will meet with friends for one hour prior to services at the church.
Ben Forbush dies
ASHTON — Ben Forbush, our loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, passed away after a heroic fight with cancer on Thursday, January 24, 2008, at the age of 64.
Bennie was born August 2, 1943 in Rexburg, to Elmer and Blanche Forbush. He was raised in a loving home, and enjoyed the strength of familial associations with his widowed mother until her death, and with his brothers and sisters the rest of his life. Family togetherness with immediate and extended family was important to Bennie.
Bennie grew up in Salem and sprinkled among chores and work assignments developed a love for hunting and fishing, which lasted the majority of his life. Bennie married Sharon Nielsen and together had three children, whom Bennie was devoted to after he and Sharon divorced.
Bennie was a hard worker and spent a good portion of his work life driving truck or heavy equipment. The great love of his working life came when he purchased a small saw mill in Ashton. Busy Bee Saw Mill and Lumber was in active operation under Bennie’s care for approximately 10 years, and provided Bennie and children with many wonderful memories.
In the latter part of Bennie’s life, a love of animals developed. Even when Bennie’s health failed, he was concerned that someone feed his "kids." Beyond his children, Bennie’s kids were his dog (Min), and the squirrels and birds that lived on his property and increased exponentially as he fed them. He took great joy in watching them and caring for them. Importantly, feelings to exercise watch care extended beyond animals, to family, friends and neighbors.
Bennie was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and served in various callings, including Executive Secretary, Elders Quorum Secretary, Sunday School President and High Priest Group Leadership. Bennie was a dutiful and loving home teacher, and was a generous contributor to various church funds including the missionary and perpetual education funds.
Bennie will be missed by all, but most chiefly by his children, "kids" and brothers and sisters. C.S. Lewis said, "there are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal." Dad’s simple virtues attest to this fact.
Bennie is survived by his children, Debbie Miller, Salt Lake City, Utah; David (Lori) Forbush, Nibley, Utah; Jeff (Gayla) Forbush of Salem; 14 grandchildren, two sisters, Lavon Clinton and Ellen Singleton, and five brothers, Max, Robert "Bob", Jack, Bill and Harold Forbush. Bennie was preceded in death by his sister Catherine, brothers Clarence and Don, and parents Elmer and Blanche Forbush.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at the Ashton LDS Stake Center, 516 North 2nd Street. A viewing will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2008 at Baxter Funeral Home, 717 Main St. in Ashton, and Tuesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.
Before his passing, Bennie asked that special thanks be extended to his friend Ron Dixon. Bennie’s children express special thanks to all family members, neighbors and friends, for loving kindnesses extended to Dad the last couple years, and in particular to Jack and Lynn Forbush for their loving and tender care of Dad during the last weeks of his life.
Donna Viola Case
Donna Viola Case, age 83, of Ashton, died January 30, 2008, from natural causes at Life Care Center in Idaho Falls. Donna was born 27 July 1924 at Squirrel, Idaho to Edgar Elbert Payne and Ollie Melissa House.
She lived in and around Ashton all of her life until she moved to Idaho Falls six years ago. Donna received her schooling in various one and two room school houses around the area. She got to school by walking, riding a horse and skiing. She sometimes had to travel 4 or 5 miles to get to school. She loved the opportunities that learning afforded her. She was a life-long learner who taught herself to sew, quilt, crochet and many other crafts.
On October 9, 1941, Donna married Cullum Markley Case at the Fremont County Courthouse in St. Anthony. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 13, 1952.
Donna was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served in various callings including Sunday School, Primary and Relief Society. Her greatest love was serving as a Relief Society counselor. Through this calling, she gained an appreciation for the Relief Society motto, "Charity never faileth".
Having a "Mother’s Heart", Donna was happy to be at home with her four children. She also helped her husband in the timber business which was his profession for many years. She did do seasonal work during the potato and grain harvests by cooking for threshers, picking potatoes and driving grain and potato trucks. Later after her children were older she got a job driving school bus. She had this job for 13 years.
Quilting and crocheting, were two crafts that Donna really enjoyed. She always had a quilt on and most of them were given away to her children, grandchildren and friends. She loved having visits from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Elbert Payne and Ollie Melissa House, her husband Cullum Markley Case, and her three younger brothers, Elbert Francis Payne, Dennis Jay Payne and Dee Payne. She also leaves two sister-in-laws, Edith Payne and Narlene Payne.
She is survived by her children, Becky Pickett (Matt) of Idaho Falls, Wesley Case (Kathleen) of Ashton, Susan Wood (Roger) of Shelley and Joe Case of Ashton. She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5 at the Ashton Third Ward Chapel. The family will meet with friends Monday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church and Tuesday from noon to 12:45 p.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Ashton Pineview Cemetery
under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home.
Amy Raymond
Every person has a story, and Amy’s began on September 26, 1974, in Pocatello, when she and her twin brother, Gordon, were born to Carl Raymond and Patricia (Raymond) Smith. Amy passed away of an apparent heart attack on Tuesday, February 12, 2008.
Amy’s dedication to her family and to Pocatello, especially its schools and animals, began immediately. She spoke for Gordon every chance she had, and she played surrogate mother to every stray kitten in the neighborhood. She was the proverbial glue between family and friends. She talked to her dad, Carl, every day until his death in 2005, and kept constant contact with her two sisters, Bev Raymond-Ferro and Robbi Raymond-Burgi, her Mom, and second Dad, Pat and Allen Smith, her second mom, Marilyn Raymond. But her most important contact was always her twin, Gordon.
In 1992, she graduated from Highland High. She graduated Idaho State University (ISU) in 1997 with a Bachelor's of Art in English and in 1999 received a Master's of Art in English. She was proud of her accomplishments as Associate Director of ISU’s Centennial Campaign, and she was deeply satisfied with helping her students become better thinkers and writers while she was employed as a lecturer in the English Department, where she taught literature and writing until her death.
Any met her husband and best friend, Dan Payne, (she always says “Dann.”) while arguing about existential philosophy in 1997. Although that argument was never settled, they married on February 27, 1999. Since then, their arguments expanded to who is the better cook, who cleans the litter box, who is the better writer, and who loves the other more. The only one of these arguments they ever settled is that Danny cleans the litter box.
Dan is the son of Parley and Marla Payne of Island Park. Amy and Dan were frequent visitors to the Payne cabin on Bills Island, and participated in the Island Park Area Chamber of Commerce's Wild West WinterFest. This year, Amy attended Casino Night dressed as a classy saloon girl and Dan kept a crowd happy and busy at a roulette table.
A memorial service for Amy is set for 3 p.m. in the Stephens Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 16, 2008.
