North English - John Cyril O’Meara was born October 25, 1930 on the family farm near Millersburg, Iowa, the son of Mike and Agnes Berry O’Meara. He graduated from Millersburg High School in 1948. Cyril was united in marriage to Janice Roggentine on June 26, 1954 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Millersburg. He farmed and raised cattle for many years in the North English area. Cyril also operated a farm chemical plant. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the North English Rotary Club, recently served on the Board of Directors for the Knoll Ridge Country Club and a member of the American Legion. Cyril was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending as much time as possible playing golf. He and his wife also loved to travel abroad. He was a loving father and dedicated husband, caring for his wife, who suffers from Alzheimer’s for many years. Cyril died surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the English Valley Care Center in North English from complications of cancer. Surviving is his wife of nearly fifty years, Janice of North English; a daughter: Kim O’Meara and her son Evan Anderson of Cedar Rapids, three sons and families: Robert O’Meara and his partner Patty Kluge of Millersburg and Bob’s daughters, Molly Clubb of Traer and Megan O’Meara of Ames; Garry O’Meara and partner Liz Bunch of Richardson, Texas and Garry’s children Alison and Ryne O’Meara and Bradley O’Meara and his wife Megan Threlkeld of Iowa City and their children Melanie and Collin; three brothers: Dr. Clement O’Meara of North Field, Minnesota, William O’Meara of Chicago, Illinois and Hugh O’Meara of Williamsburg and two sisters: Mary Agnes Wagner and Helen Gaffey both of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Dr. Donald O’Meara. A Celebration of Life Service will be Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 10:00am at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with Fr. David Hitch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Bernard’s cemetery near Millersburg. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M. on Tuesday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg where there will be a prayer service at 7:00pm and visitation will be Wednesday at the church from 9:00am until service time. Memorial fund has been established for Alzheimer’s Association of East Central Iowa and the Iowa City Hospice. Honorary Casket Bearers: Richard Elwood, Michael Elwood, John Gaffey, Cecil Long, Dr. Clement O’Meara and Bob Roggentine, Sr.. Casket Bearers: Stephen O’Meara, Mike O’Meara, Denny O’Meara, David Schminke, Mike McCormick and Mick Gaffey. Organist is Catherine Shaull. Vocalists: Patty Kluge, Art Anderson and Kevin Becker.

William (Bill) David Walter was born on November 28, 1920 in rural North English, IA, son of Harold and Pearl Roberts Walter. William attended Williamsburg High School. He grew up in the Williamsburg area, where he farmed. On February 14, 1941 he was united in marriage to Thelma Hinder. They lived on a farm in the Williamsburg area until moving to North English in 1951. He owned and operated the DX Station for a number of years and Walter Construction along with son Gene. William was a member of the United States Navy during WWII. William was a member of the United Methodist Church, North English, where he was a church trustee and usher. He was a board member of the North English Community Center. For the past 6 years he drove the IA County Transportation Bus. William died on December 27, 2003, at the English Valley Care Center after a courages battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife: Thelma of North English; two sons: Jerry Walter (Geri) of Marion, IA, and Gene Walter (Jane) of Center Point, IA; 3 granddaughters, 1 grandson, 2 great grandsons, 2 step grandchildren and 8 step great granddaughters. William was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 2:00pm at the North English United Methodist Church, with Rev Mary McAtee officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English from 4 - 7 pm on Monday December 29, 2003.

William Wallace Augustine was born on July 17, 1916, to Cloyd and Kate Beatty Augustine. On December 24, 1939 he was united into marriage to Lois M. Moore. William was a farmer in Keswick, IA. He was a member of the Keswick United Methodist Church. William died on Friday, December 26, 2003, at the English Valley Care Center. He is survived by his wife: Lois of Keswick; a son Kenneth Augustine of Ames, IA; a daughter Kay Graham of Columbus, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. Services will be held on Tuesday December, 30, 2003 at 10:30am at the Keswick United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dick Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Sorden cemetery . Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday, December 29th.

Velma M. Yoder was born March 14, 1914 near Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Abner M. and Eliza (Yoder) Miller. She graduated from Kalona High School. At age 13 she was baptized at the East Union Mennonite Church. On February 14, 1937 she was united in marriage to Lyle E. Yoder at her parents home in rural Kalona. She has lived her entire life in the Kalona community where she was a homemaker, she also was a clerk at the Cheese Factory for 5 years, and was a cook at the Pleasantview Home for 5 years. Velma was a lifelong member of the East Union Mennonite Church where she was active in WMSC, and she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School numerous times. She enjoyed piecing, appliqueing and quilting quilts. Velma died on Friday, December 26, 2003 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a brief illness at the age of 89 years. Velma is survived by 4 children - Phyllis Litwiller and husband Francis of Washington; Wilford D. Yoder and wife Elaine of Iowa City; Kenneth L. Yoder and wife Wanda of Kalona; Zelda Stoltzfus and husband Marvin of Sarasota, Florida; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and a sister Dorothy Rhodes and husband Eldon of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lyle on March 7, 1971, and an infant brother.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the East Unin Mennonite Church and the Pleasantview Home.

KEOTA - Michael Lyon McIllece, age 63, of Keota, died of cancer Friday, December 26, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Michael was born September 21, 1940, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Raymond and Mary (Lyon) McIllece. He graduated from Fort Madison High School and received his B.A. in Psychology from Loras College in Dubuque. Michael served in the United States Army from 1962 until 1964 and in the Army Reserves from 1964 until 1968. On January 23, 1976 he married
Denise Buck in Ogalala, Nebraska. The couple lived in the Keota area until moving to Keota in 2000. Michael attended St. James Catholic Church in Washington and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, reading and horse racing. Survivors include his wife: Denise of Keota; one brother: Raymond “Pat” McIllece and wife Anne of Walcott; two brothers - in - law: Dallas Buck, Jr. and wife Teresa of Colo and Darwin Buck and wife Rhonda of Kinross; father - in - law: Dallas Buck, Sr. of Marshalltown; mother - in - law: June E. Pearson of Keota; three uncles and aunts; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one step son and several aunts and uncles.. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial with military rites will be at St. Mary cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where the family will be present from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for cancer research. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

South English Dateline Alta Mae Garrett was born on September 30, 1913 in North English, IA, a daughter of Gean M. and Tracie Vanous Smith. She graduated from North English High School in 1930 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Coe College in 1934 with a B.A. Degree in Theory of Music. Alta taught school in Walford, Soldier, Cedar Rapids, Millersburg, Kinross and South English. Alta married
Donald S. Garrett on June 30, 1938 in South English. She was a partner with her husband and Carl Hogendorn operating the North English record from 1959 until 1971. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Wade Farm Service, Coffman Feed and Grain and from 1975 until 1990 refinished antique furniture. She also gave private piano and vocal lessons for many years. She was a member of the South English Union Church, where she served as organist, choir member teacher, board member and financial secretary for many years. Alta was a member, and Past Matron & Past Worthy Matron of the OES (Rosalind Chapter), the Keokuk County Historical Society, and the GFWC Twentieth Century Club. Donald preceded her in death in June 1999. She became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in January 2003. Alta died following a short illness on Thursday, December 25, 2003 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. She lived 90 years, 2 months and 25 days. She is survived by a son Evan Garrett of Ann Arbor, MI; two daughters: Patricia Marks of South English, IA and Virginia Garrett of Sigourney; 3 grandchildren: Joshua Garrett, Matthew and Wesley Marks; 3 great grandchildren: Kristin, Justin & Ashley Marks. Alta was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister Phyllis Jean Miel. Memorial services for Alta Garrett will be held at 1:30 P.M. at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service in North English on Monday, December, 29, 2003, with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating. Visitation will be from noon until service time on Monday. Private committal services will be in the North English cemetery . A memorial fund has been established for Dollars For Scholars Scholarships.

Alice Janora Knipfer was born on December 26, 1911 to Elbert R. and Sarah Jones White near Garden Grove, IA. She graduated from North English High School. On December 18, 1932 she was united in marriage to Ernest Newell Knipfer of North English. The couple resided on a farm east of North English for fifty years before moving into town in 1983. Alice was a member of the North English United Methodist Church, was active in the United Methodist Women and at the North English Community Center, and was a member of the Union Busy Bees, a local women's club. She enjoyed quilting and gardening. Ernest preceded her in death in January 1990. Alice died on Thursday, December 25, 2003, at the English Valley Care Center in North English following a long illness. She lived 91 years, 11 months and 29 days. She is survived by 5 children: Marion Briley of Malvern, IA; Ross Knipfer of North English, IA; Jane Knipfer of Cedar Rapids, IA; Stanley Knipfer of Webster, IA; and Glenn Knipfer of North English; 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; 5 brothers & sisters: Elizabeth Watson of Missouri Valley, IA; Evelyn Van Rossum of Shenandoah, IA; Stanley White of North English, IA; Allen White of North English, IA; Mary Frye of Moberly, MO; Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers J. Kenneth White, and in infancy Phillip White, and a great grandson, Jacob Knipfer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, December 29th at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Rev. Mary McAtee officiating. Velma Pauline Yoder was born September 13, 1915 near Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Christian and Naomi (Yoder) Swartzendruber. She graduated from Center High School. On January 26, 1938 she was united in marriage to Ernest M. Yoder in Iowa City. They lived in the Kalona and Wellman communities where she was a homemaker. Velma was a member of the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church where she was active in UMW for many years. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crossword puzzles and listening to music. Velma died on Thursday, December 25, 2003 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a lingering illness at the age of 88 years. Velma is survived by 3 daughters - Dorothy Bullock and husband Jerry of Maquoketa; Janet Miller and husband Dave of Mount Vernon; Janice Meyers and husband Steve of El Paso, Texas; 2 sons - Walter Yoder of Wellman; Warren Yoder of Ankeny; a son - in - law Robert Palmer of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and a brother - Eldon Swartzendruber of Kalona. Velam was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter - Betty Palmer; 2 brothers - Walter Swartzendruber, Floyd Swartzendruber; and a sister - Fern Hering.

SIGOURNEY - Ethel M. Nimmer, age 96, of North English, formerly of Sigourney, died Thursday, December 25, 2003, at the English Valley Care Center in North English following a brief illness. Ethel was born September 5, 1907, in Steady Run Township, Keokuk County, Iowa, to Frank and Ida (Puder) Martin. She graduated from Martinsburg High School and received her teaching certificate from William Penn College. Ethel taught in country schools in Keokuk County for nine years. On July 31, 1940, she married
Orval R. Nimmer in Sigourney. The couple owned and operated Nimmer Furniture Store and Funeral Home in Sigourney. Orval passed away in 1972 and Ethel continued to operate the furniture store until her retirement in the early 1980's. She became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in December of 1997. Ethel was a member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, cooking and sewing. Survivors include two children: Ann Garrett and husband Richard “Dick” of South English and Ron Nimmer and wife Amy of Bettendorf; four grandchildren: Troy Garrett and wife Jennifer of Kirksville, Missouri, Tim Garrett and fiancee Laura Van Dee of South English, Emily Nimmer of Chicago, Illinois and Abbey Nimmer of Bettendorf and one sister: Beulah Dumont of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Orval in 1972; son: Clair Arnold; four sisters: Gladys Chacey, Maude Pence, Velma Danels and Wilma Martin and four brothers: Myrl, John, Harold and Forrest Martin. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. Danny Lemons officiating. Private burial will be at Mt. Maud L. Denison , age 96, of North English, died on Sunday, December 21, 2003, at the English Valley Care Center in North English after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service in North English. Pastor Don Ridenour will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 7 pm on Friday, December 26th at the funeral home. Burial will be in the North English cemetery . A memorial fund has been established for the North English First Responders and the English Valleys Schools. Maud L. Denison was born on July 28, 1907 in the Greene Valley Community East of North English, IA, a daughter of Jesse and Eva Moffit Hall. Maud attended rural Tucker School in Green Valley. On February 20, 1926 she was united in marriage to Earl Denison at the Christian Church in Wellman. They made their home on the farm until moving into North English in 1944. They owned and operated a restaurant, a Maytag Appliance store and a Heating & Furnace Repair Store. Earl preceded her in death in February 1969. Maud was a member of the North English Christian Church. She enjoyed working in her vegetable garden and raising flowers. She especially loved her family and grandchildren. Maud became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in November 1998. She died on Sunday, December 21, 2003, at the English Valley Care Center after a brief illness. Maud lived 96 years, 4 months and 23 days. She is survived by two daughters: Darlene Sissel (John) of Anamosa, IA and Janice Shirley (Marvin) of Minburn, IA; three sons: Dyle Denison (June) of Clive, IA; Gene Denison (Pat) of South English, IA, Larry Denison (Susan) of Iowa City, IA; a daughter - in - law Betty Denison of North English, IA; 18 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren; a sister Eva Dobbins of Keswick, IA and a number of nieces and nephews. Maud was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Wilford Denison, a grand daughter, brothers Jesse, Ross, Wayne, Clarence, Roy & Ralph Denison and sisters Eula Denison, Lillie Cobb, Mary Tippie and Gladys Denison.
