Vernon L. Vogler
Vernon L. Vogler, age 83, of Grinnell, Iowa, formerly of Schaller, Iowa, died Saturday, November 22, 2003 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 2:30 PM at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller with Reverend Brandt officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery in Schaller.
Friends may call anytime after 4:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.
Vernon Vogler was born on December 26, 1919 in Schaller, Iowa to Adolph and Hedwig (Langner) Vogler. He spent his childhood in his parents home and attended school in Schaller through high school, graduating with the Schaller High School Class of 1938.
On November 3, 1941, Vernon was inducted into the United States Army. He served his country until 1945, when he was honorably discharged on December 27.
Vernon was united in marriage to Harriet Dunham on November 22, 1943 at her family home in Early, Iowa. Two sons, Stanley Vernon and Gerald Lee, blessed this union.
Vernon and his father partnered together in carpenter work. In 1964, he went into commercial construction.
On November 20, 1965, Vernon married Lois Downard of Russell, Iowa.
Vernon was a charter member of the V.F.W. Post 64704 in Schaller. He had the talent and the desire to participate in sports as a young man, and was a fan that enjoyed watching sports as he grew older.
Survivors include his sons: Stan and wife Ethlyn of Beverly Hills, Michigan, and Jerry and wife Toni of Wichita, Kansas; six grandchildren; three sisters: Thelma Fitzsenry of Storm Lake, Iowa, Lorraine Fey or Battle Creek, Iowa and Deloris Mills of Hemut, California; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Preceding Vernon in death were his parents, and two brothers: Donald and Adolph, Jr.
Zola M. Gaffney
Zola M. Gaffney, age 85, of Storm Lake died Monday, August 4, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 8th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Storm Lake with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating.
Friends may call on Thursday after 3 p.m., at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home where there will be a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m., the family will be present to greet friend from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Zola M. Gaffney was born March 25, 1918 in Lohrville, Iowa the daughter of William and Ida (Lovett) Gaffney. She attended country school near the family farm in Calhoun County, the family moved to Carroll in 1932 where Zola attended school until moving to Storm Lake in 1935. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1936.
Zola was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Guild and had retired after working for 20 years at the S & M Store in Storm Lake and then for 20 years at Paxton’s Jewelry in Storm Lake. She will be remembered for her quick Irish wit..
She is survived by a sister, Joan Young, Omaha, Nebraska, a brother John Gaffney and his wife, Dolores, Storm Lake, a sister-in-law, Phyllis Gaffney, Storm Lake and by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James Joseph Gaffney and Richard Gaffney and by a sister, Mary Cavanaugh.
A.W. Fowler
A.W. Fowler, 83, of Storm Lake passed away Thursday, December 9, 2004 at Buena Vista Manor, Storm Lake.
A memorial services will be Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Tom Hinshaw officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
A.W. was born near Sweetwater, Oklahoma on February 10, 1921. His parents were Alfred Wair and Vulla (Callan) Fowler. He graduated from Meridian High School, SW State College, Oklahoma and SW Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, being stationed in France, England, Germany and Belgium.
On October 2, 1947, A.W. married Mary Catherine Eakin of Petersburg, Tennessee in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
He taught school for eight years before working at SW Portland Cement Co. and Bil-Mar Turkey Processing Company for 13 years each. He retired in 1983.
A.W. was baptized in Edmond, Oklahoma in 1939. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, serving as a deacon as well as on the Christian Education Board, the Mission Committee and as Sunday School Superintendent. He was in charge of Sunrise Chapel for many years.
Cherishing his memory are his children: Betty Jeanne (Dennis) Fast of Early, Alfred Wair Fowler III of Storm Lake, Mary June (Jeff) Speichinger of Chavuma, Zambia and Joanne (Steve) Luetkeman of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Troy Fast of Sioux City, Tracy Fast of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Jennelle Speichinger of Augusta, Georgia, Jason Speichinger of Spokane, Washington and Joseph Speichinger of Chavuma, Zambia; brothers: Vancy, P.O., John, and Gene and his wife Leah; sisters: Faye, Flo and Ruby as well as many relatives and friends.
Proceeding him in death were his parents; wife, Mary; his stepfather; son, Teddy; grandson, Justin Speichinger; nephew, David Fowler; brother “Hi” and sister Alma.
Chris Geisinger
Chris Geisinger of Storm Lake, died Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake after a two-year struggle with cancer.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 18th at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell and Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake after 3 p.m. Tuesday where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Those wishing to send condolences to the family may do so online.

Chris was born in Lexington, Tennessee to Bryan and Lou Vena (Kerr) Ricketts. Her family lived in Corinth, Mississippi until she was 11 years old before moving to Memphis, Tennessee. She graduated from Messick High School in 1944 and received her degree to teach French and English from Memphis State University. She taught school in Memphis for two years, then moved to Washington, D.C. to work with a ghost writer in General Stone's office in the Pentagon. There, she met her husband, Arch Geisinger, who was teaching Engineering at Ft. Belvoir. They were married on May 24, 1952 and lived in Falls Church, Virginia until the end of that year before moving back to his home town of Storm Lake, Iowa.
Her marriage to Arch was blessed with three children, Stephen, Beth, and Karen, whom became the source of much joy, happiness and fulfillment in her life. She dedicated her life to raising her children, creating a beautiful home for her family and playing an active role in the community.
Her community work included founding the Melody Club with a friend in 1953 and being an original Witter Gallery Board member for fifteen years and a past president. She was a past President of Chapter EP of P.E.O. and celebrated her 50th year of membership this year. She was also a past president of the Historical Society and the Harker House Foundation in which she decorated the house interior with two other women. She served many years on the Boards for Community Concerts and Hospital Auxiliary and was a life member of UMW at the Methodist church where she was a soloist for 20 years and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of Questers, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and was active in the Republican Party and the Republican forum.
Chris especially enjoyed her four bridge clubs, studying art in Fine Arts Club and traveling. She and Arch traveled to Europe, Mexico, spent their winter months at their condo in Scottsdale, Arizona for 20 years and loved visiting the San Francisco Bay Area for the past fourteen years.
Chris was so pleased to celebrate her 52nd anniversary of marriage with Arch this year. She will be known for being a talented and energetic true "southern bell" and was blessed with many lifetime friends.
Chris is survived by her husband Arch; son Stephen and wife Donna and grandchildren Laura, John, Ryan, Scott and Thomas of Kansas City; daughter Elizabeth "Beth", her husband Kevin and grandchildren Nicole and Josh of Sac City; and daughter Karen, her husband Eric and grandchildren Andrew and David of Walnut Creek, Ca; her sister Louise Moffatt of Memphis, niece Terry Hasley of Clearwater, Fl, nephew Christopher Moffatt of Charlotte, N.C., and Dr. Lee Moffatt of Memphis and their respective spouses; special first cousin Lee and Fran Evans of Santa Rosa, Ca. and Darla and Richard Bastoni of San Francisco as well as brother-in-law, Harold; nephew Harold Jr. of Storm Lake, nephew Donald of Kansas City and niece Susan of Storm Lake.
Cheryl Grau
Cheryl Grau, age 50, of Newell, Iowa, died Monday, November 15, 2004 in Rochester, Minnesota.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, November 18, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Pastor Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Cheryl Colleen Steinke was born on September 13, 1954 to Merril Paul and Nina K. (Roth) Steinke in Fargo, North Dakota. Cheryl was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell at the time of her death. She lived with her parents in Park Rapids, Minnesota as a child, attending the Park Rapids Schools and graduating from high school there. Cheryl then went on to Art School in Alexandria, Minnesota.
On February 22, 1975, Cheryl was united in marriage to Tom Grau in Park Rapids, Minnesota. The couple’s marriage was blessed with a daughter, Michelle Cheryl.
Cheryl was a loving wife and devoted mother with a special sense of humor, who treasured her family and every moment spent with them. She had a lifelong love of dogs and horses that translated into raising and showing Burmese Mountain Dogs. Cheryl held close to her heart those cherished memories of showing the dogs with her daughter, and that of a special trip she and Tom took together to Russia. She liked to unwind by spending time in her garden and working with her flowers. Cheryl always cherished the fond memories she had as a youth sponsor for the Nain Luther League. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband, Tom of Newell; daughter Michelle of Newell; brother Jim Steinke of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sisters: Elaine and husband Roland Senechal of Drake, North Dakota, Pat and husband Elliott Annett of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Judy and husband Bruce Patton of Park Rapids, Minnesota; parents-in-law Leo and Bernice Grau of Storm Lake, Iowa; sisters-in-law Sharon and husband Thurman Gilbert of Chandler, Arizona and Carmen and husband Barry Miller of Sun Lakes, Arizona, as well as many nieces and nephews, extended family members and a host of friends.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.
Dorothy Vandeweerd
Dorothy Vandeweerd, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Friday, January 23, 2004, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2004, at 11:00 a.m at the United Church of Christ in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Friends may send condolences to the family online.
Dorothy Marie Peterson was born on June 1, 1921, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Pete and Della (Clark) Peterson. She spent her childhood in her parents’ home in Storm Lake and attended Storm Lake schools.
On June 24, 1939, Dorothy was united in marriage to Kenneth Johnson, Sr. Two sons were born to their union. Dorothy and Kenneth were blessed with 46 years of marriage before Kenneth died in 1985. In 1988, Dorothy married John Vandeweerd. John passed away in 1998.
Dorothy enjoyed fishing and liked to play cards. She had an avid interest in antiques, and enjoyed buying and selling them. She loved her church and was a faithful member. Dorothy was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who treasured her family and the time she could spend with them.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons; Kenny and wife Jane Johnson, and Johnny and wife Peg Johnson, all of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Laura Frazier, Kreg Johnson, Tiffany Carlson and Kristy Miller; great-grandchildren: Travis, Lindsay, Noah and Carter Frazier, Jacie, Bria and Ashley Carlson; Jeff Maymon and Megan Miller; her sister, Berniece Illum; many nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents; her husband, Kenneth Johnson in 1985; her husband, John Vandeweerd in 1998; and her brother Bob Peterson.
Evelyn C. Wanberg
Evelyn C. Wanberg, age 88, of 55068 Cobus Lane Elkhart, Indiana, and formerly of Galva, Iowa died at 2:45 A.M. September 4, 2004 at Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Elkhart, Indiana.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 10, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the Fratzke-Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where there will be a rosary service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Schaller, under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller.
Evelyn O’Meara was born April 18, 1916 in Ida County, Iowa to James and Clara (Keefe) O'Meara. On December 31, 1937 she married Clifford O. Wanberg in Schaller, Iowa. He died March 14, 1999.
Surviving is one daughter, Mary S. Wanberg of Elkhart; a son, John E. (LInda) Wanberg of Niles, Michigan; two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren; as well as other extended family and friends.
Evelyn was preceded in death by two sisters: Annette Rens and Marie Peterson; and three brothers: Clare, Roy and Francis O'Meara.

Howard Grundman
Howard Grundman, age 82, of Storm Lake, formerly from Albuqueque, New Mexico died Monday, November 8, 2004 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Memorial Services will be Saturday, November 13, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Howard was born November 15, 1921 at Pella, Iowa to Ralph S. and Katherine Elvira (Burtness) Grundman. He spent his early childhood in Pella where he attended school and graduated from Pella High School. Following graduation, he attended Iowa State University for a short time, secondary to his enlistment in the service.
On September 29, 1942, Howard entered the U.S. Army Airforce. He would go on to serve in WWII and in India- Burma and Northern Burma. During his service time, Howard attained the rank of First Lieutenant, Flight Instructor, and 1st Pilot M.A.T. in Burma/China. He was honorably discharged on May 25, 1955.
Howard was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jane West in Albuqueque where they lived and raised their family. Their union was blessed with four children: Katherine, Tom, Elizabeth, and John. Howard worked at the West Funiture Store prior to his career with Equitable and Prudential Insurances, retiring in 1984. “Axle” continued to work, with his last employment being at Arnold Motor Supply in Storm Lake.
As a child, Howard was baptized December 25, 1922 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He was a member of the Second Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. Howard enjoyed gambling, fishing, golfing and all sports. Howard lived in Albuqueque, New Mexico for fifty years and the last 2 1/2 years in Storm Lake.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marge, of Cloves, New Mexico; sons: Tom Grundman of Hawthorne, California and John Grundman of Storm Lake; daughters: Katherine Keywood of AbuDhabi U.A.E. and Elizabeth Mahon of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren: Jimmy, Daniel and Kevin Mahon, Jake and Kate Grundman, and Jennifer Olsen; brother Tom Grundman of Cherokee; sister Susan Kramer of Park Forest, Illinois; and other extended family members and a host of friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; and first wife Jane W. Grundman.
Joseph “Punk” Haselhoff
Joseph “Punk” Haselhoff, age 84, of Schaller, Iowa, and a lifetime resident of the Early and Schaller areas, died Thursday, September 2, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, September 4, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller, with Reverend Patrick O’Kane officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Schaller. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call anytime after 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 4:30 and a Parish Vigil Service at 8:00, both at the funeral home.
Joseph G. Haselhoff was born March 26, 1920 to Joseph A. and Louise C. (Minter) Haselhoff) on a farm near Early, Iowa. He was baptized March 30, 1920 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, and later confirmed at the same church. Joe grew up on farms in the Early and Schaller area. He attended country school near Early as well as one year at Sacred Heart School in Early.
On September 27, 1949, Joe was united in marriage to Eleanor M. Landgraf at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with a family of two sons, John and Ed and two daughters, Marcella and Alice.
“Punk” farmed all his life and enjoyed working the land until he retired in 1990. He and Eleanor moved to Schaller at that time. Punk liked people and was happy when he could visit with or play a game of cards with friends and family.
Punk will be remembered as a loving husband, a devoted father, a treasured grandfather, a caring brother, a dear uncle and a prized friend.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 55 years, Eleanor Haselhoff of Schaller; two sons: John and wife Marcia Haselhoff of Schaller, and Ed Haselhoff of Alta, Iowa; two daughters: Marcella and husband Dennis Brabec of Laurens, Iowa, and Alice and husband Jerry May of Hardy, Iowa; grandchildren: Kelli (Brabec) and husband Jason Book of West Des Moines, Iowa, Mark Haselhoff and Emily Haselhoff of Schaller; a step-grandson, Adam May of Forest City, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Jean Landgraf and Jackie Landgraf of Omaha, Nebraska; numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family and a host of friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers: Leo and his wife Leone Haselhoff, George and his wife Martha Marie Haselhoff, and Arnold and his wife Mildred Haselhoff; one sister, Marcella Wolff; one grandson, Brian Brabec; a nephew, Jim Haselhoff; his parents-in-law; and his brother-in-law, Raymond and wife Marian Jansen.
