Florence Peer

Florence Peer, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa did Monday, July 4, 2005 in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Graveside Services will be held Friday, July 8, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

There will be no visitation.

Florence Zelinski was born September 17, 1925 in Ogalalla, Nebraska, the daughter of Roman and Helen Zelinski. She spent her early years in Big Spring, Nebraska before moving to Colorado. On January 31, 1948, Florence was united in marriage to Herbert Peer.

Florence is survived by nieces, a nephew and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Hellen Boisen

Hellen Boisen, age 91, of Schaller, Iowa died Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 29, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, with Revered David Lyons officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, July 28, 2005 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present.

Hellen was born December 12, 1913 at Schaller, Iowa to Swan and Hilma (Bjurstrom) Johnson. She was baptized near Kiron at Bethel Church in 1914. In 1926, she was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, where she was a member until the time of her death. Hellen received her education in the Schaller Community Schools, graduating from Schaller High School.

On March 9, 1936, Hellen was united in marriage to Carl William Boisen in Odebolt, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Marilyn and Claris.

Hellen was a farm wife who loved her family and kept a warm and comfortable home for them. She enjoyed baking and sharing the resulting food with friends and family. She also liked to dance, quilt, crochet and play cards. She was a caretaker by nature and her gentle concern for the well-being of others, especially her family, will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Marilyn Palma of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Claris (Daylon) Wade of Littleton, Colorado; grandchildren: Darla (Jay) Iverson, Dawn Palma, Tom Wade and Steve Wade; great-grandchildren: Taylor, Morgan and Cassidy Long, Jakob Meyers, and Shelby, Hunter and Tanner Iverson; sister-in-law Eileen Johnson of Storm Lake, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Hellen was preceded in death by her parents, Swan and Hilma Johnson; her husband Carl in 1982; her brothers, Harold and wife Esther Johnson and Mayford Johnson; and her sister Mable and husband Floyd Alderson.

Idabelle Sheffield

Idabelle Sheffield, age 101, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 6, 2005 at the Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.

Memorial Services will be held Monday, April 11, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake. Graveside services on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Storm Lake Cemetery will precede the memorial service. There will be no visitation. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Idabelle was born on July 4, 1903 to Sam and Selma (Danielson) Mullins in Storm Lake, Iowa. Her father, Sam, operated Mullins Barbershop in Storm Lake starting in 1898. On the day she was born, Sam was to pitch for a Storm Lake White Caps ballgame. Idabelle was very proud of being born on Independence Day and was called “Firecracker” by many of her friends.

Idabelle was only 12 years old when her mother died in 1915. She received her education in the Storm Lake Community Schools, graduating from high school in 1922. Idabelle and her brother, Harold, then moved to Arizona, where she worked as a telephone operator. Harold moved back to Storm Lake to take over operation of Mullins Barbershop in 1938. Idabelle later moved to California where she continued to work as a telephone operator. On March 24, 1947, she married Manning Harvey Sheffield in Los Angeles, California. After her husband died, Idabelle returned to Storm Lake and worked at Vern’s Variety. She lived for many years at 407 West Sixth Street in Storm Lake with her dog, Punkin. The children in the neighborhood loved stopping at her house because she always had an extra cookie or some candy for them. Idabelle moved to McCord Manor and then to Buena Vista Manor, where she resided until her death.

Left to cherish Idabelle’s memory is her special friend, Mary Ellen Norris of Alta, Iowa.

Idabelle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brother.

Laura Hansen

Laura Hansen, age 96 and a half of Newell, Iowa, died Monday, April 18, 2005 at the Newell Good Samaritan Home in Newell.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 21, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Reverend Greg Baskerville officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Laura Hansena Johnsen was born in rural Newell, Iowa on November 18, 1908 to Lars Frederick Johnsen and Carrie Christina Nielsen. On October 5, 1932, Laura was united in marriage to Louis Andreas Hansen in Chicago, Illinois. Their union was blessed with one son, Donald.

Laura was a devoted wife and mother who delighted in keeping a warm and comfortable home for her family. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was well-known for her egg coffee, yardstick pastries, pies, rye bread, Christmas cookies and lime pickles. Spending time with friends and family always made her happy. In 1942, Laura and Louis moved to the white house west of Newell.

Laura was a life-long member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, and active in the Ladies Aid there. She survived cancer to live to 96 and a half years of age. She was a charter member of the married Meeters Club.

Laura liked to take good care of her lawn, mowing it regularly, and simply hated dandelions. She enjoyed gardening, watching Lawrence Welk and Chicago Cubs games on television, listening to polka time on the radio, collecting pigs and salt and pepper shakers and playing cards. She was always ready to go on a ride. Laura especially liked eating out at the former Ken-A-Bob Buffet in Storm Lake.

Her family was her treasure and she loved spending time with them all, but especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Donald Soren Hansen and his wife Carol of Newell; grandchildren: Heidi and her husband Rod Bramble of Newell and Jeremy and wife Trisha Hansen of Newell; great-grandchildren: Leia, Tara, Nathan and Laura Mae Hansen; her special nieces and nephews; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Louis A. Hansen; her parents; six brothers: Chris, Julian, Martin, Hans, Alfred and Fred; and six sisters: Minnie, Carrie, Anna, Hannah, Elvena, and Mary.

Mary Waterbury

Mary Waterbury, age 94, of DeBary, Florida and formerly of Odebolt and Schaller, Iowa, died Monday, August 1, 2005 in DeBary.

Memorial Services will be held Monday, August 15, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charles and Mary Waterbury Endowed Scholarship at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.

Mary Rebecca Gambach was born July 29, 1911 in Lohrville, Iowa, the daughter of David and Elsie Gambach. She graduated from Lohrville High School in 1928 and subsequently taught for several years in a one-room schoolhouse in Lohrville. At the age of 24 she enrolled in Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, and after two years obtained a teaching degree.

She was united in marriage to Charles J. Waterbury on June 5, 1938 in Storm Lake. They made their home in several northwest Iowa communities, and following their retirement, lived in DeBary, Florida.

Mary served 32 years as a second grade teacher in various schools in northwest Iowa. In 1961 she received her four-year degree from Buena Vista College.

Mary’s many interests included singing, sewing and antiques. She sang for over sixty years in school and church choirs and only recently retired from the Emmaus Lutheran Church Choir. Mary was a member of various church organizations in Iowa and Florida. Recently she enjoyed helping make quilts for charity with the Hearts and Hans Club at Emmaus Lutheran.

She was especially proud of the many quilted items she made over the years for her family. Mary helped organize the Questers Club while living in Odebolt, and she always retained her love of antiques. Together, she and Chuck restored over 90 antique trunks for friends and family.

Survivors include son Richard (Diana) Waterbury of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota; three daughters: Carol (Orris) Rollie of DeBary, Florida, Janet (Gene) Pauley of Umatilla, Florida and Mary Beth (Mike) Brandenburg of Mankato, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Ralph Gambach of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Arthur Gambach of Bloomington, Illinois, and her sister, Dorothy Mae Somers of Redlands, California.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, and son-in-law, Mark Mason.

Patricia Stull

Patricia Stull, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Thursday, December 29, 2005 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Monday, January 2, 2006 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Patricia Adeline Prichard was born January 6, 1917, to Harry Robert Prichard and Elsie May (Young) Prichard in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Patricia was baptized in 1917 in the Methodist Church at Thief River Falls. Shortly thereafter she moved to Storm Lake with her parents, four sisters, and one brother. She graduated valedictorian from Storm Lake High School in 1934. She attended Buena Vista College for two years, transferring to Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan, where she graduated in 1938 with majors in economics, mathematics, and accounting. While in Detroit she lived with her cousin Dorothy Skewis.

In 1938 Pat was united in marriage to Walton M. Bedell in Storm Lake. Her marriage to Walton was blessed with five children, Toni, David, Daniel, Deborah, and Leland. Following Walt’s death in 1958, Pat moved her family to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she worked as an office manager and bookkeeper.

In 1964 Pat married Keith Stull in Storm Lake and joined him in the farming business. Keith’s children, Bonnie, Terry, and Timothy became part of her life.

Pat was a faithful member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school for many years and was an active member of the Presbyterian Circle and UPW. She was an avid card player and belonged to the “Five Fifty-Eight” card club for many years. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, bird and wildlife watching, reading, crossword puzzles, and was well known for her baking skills of homemade bread and pies. More than anything, Pat cherished spending time with her grandchildren.

Left to cherish Pat’s memory are her children: Toni Butler (James) of Elk Grove, California; David Bedell (Donna) of Claremont, California; Daniel Bedell (Gerlinde) of Portland, Oregon; Leland Bedell (Jody) of Maple Valley, Washington; step-daughter Bonnie Zetterman (James Bennett) of Sioux City; step-son Terry Stull (Margaret) of Storm Lake; son-in-law H. James Tope of Storm Lake. Her thirteen grandchildren include: Kristen Gordon, Scott Bedell, Melanie Bedell, Nathan Sutton, Bradley Sutton, Lauren Bedell, Daniel Bedell, William Bedell, Benjamin Bedell, Rebecca Bedell, Elizabeth Bedell, Faye Hale, and Terrence Stull. Also included are four great- grandchildren: Alan Bedell, Derek Hale, Douglas Hale, and Laura Sutton; two sisters, Peggy Darland (Jack) of Cresco, Iowa and Anita Martin (Dale) of Waukon, Iowa; sister-in-law Carolyn Stull, Storm Lake, as well as other extended family and friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Harry and Elsie Prichard; husband Walton M. Bedell; husband Keith Stull; daughter Deborah Tope; step-son Timothy Stull; sisters, Janet Titsworth and Polly Slife; and brother Robert H. Prichard.

Her family and friends will remember her for her sense of humor and quick wit.

Vivian M. Toomer

Vivian M. Toomer, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, November 26, 2005 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2005 at 10:30 am at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Pastor Connie Spitzack officiating. Burial will be in Nemaha Cemetery in Nemaha, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 – 8 p.m. Memorials honoring Vivian may be mailed to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, 1525 West 5th Street, Storm Lake, Iowa 50588. Please note whether you wish the memorial to benefit the oncology or hospice department at the hospital.

Vivian Marie Gregersen was born on February 26, 1924 in Saratoga, Iowa where she lived until the age of five. Her Danish family (father Adolf Marinus Gregersen, mother Maren Marie Neilsen-Gregersen, two sisters, Lillian and Clara and one brother Kenneth) moved to Alta, Iowa in 1929. She attended Fairview School and remembers sleigh rides and gifts of apples and oranges at Christmas time. Vivian especially loved music and learning as a child. She was confirmed at the Emmanuel / Trinity Lutheran Church of Alta and grew up and lived most of her young life there. Following her graduation from Fairview High School, Vivian attended Buena Vista College receiving her degree in education and later a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. She taught school at Linn Grove, Marathon, Nemaha and Crestland of Early.

In 1947, Vivian married Donald Keith Toomer of Nemaha. Together, they made their home on a dairy farm in Nemaha. They had four children, farmed and owned and operated the Nemaha Lumber Co. Vivian was a very active member of the United Methodist Church in Nemaha, serving as the church organist and choir director for over 30 years. She was also instrumental in keeping music alive in her community and inspired many to love and enjoy music as she did. After her husband Donald died in 1996, she moved to Storm Lake, Iowa. She joined St. Mark Lutheran Church where she also became active in music ministry. In her twilight years, Vivian still enjoyed music, became interested in poetry, was an avid reader and life long learner. She loved her home, crossword puzzles and seeing family and friends.

Survivors include her son, Greg Toomer and Elaine Gerdes of Early, Iowa; daughters: Anita Coon and husband Jay of Early, Iowa, Valerie Toomer of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Jennifer Toomer of Minneapolis, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Lisa Toomer of Des Moines, Iowa, Mark Toomer and wife Rebecca of Midlothian, Texas, Erin Toomer-Smith and husband Tim of Storm Lake, Iowa, John Toomer of Iowa City, Iowa, Joshua Coon and wife Christi of Smyrna, Tennessee, and Gabrielle Coon-Grooters and husband Scott of Hermitage, Tennessee; six great grandchildren: Miranda Toomer, Gillian Toomer, Gavin Toomer, Samuel Toomer, Bennett Smith, and Austin Grooters; sisters, Lillian Swanson-Holstein of Alta, Iowa and Clara Samuelson and husband Melvin of Storm Lake, Iowa; brother Kenneth Gregersen and wife Evelyn of Phoenix, Arizona; brother-in-law Edward Toomer and wife Gail of Storm lake; and extended family and friends.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald.

Cletus Janning

Cletus Janning, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Friday, November 3, 2006 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass for Mr. Janning will be celebrated at10:00 a.m., Monday, November 6, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake with Father Will Vitt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake with military rites by AMVETS Post #66. Arrangements are by the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 5, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Legion of Mary rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m., a Parish Vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Cletus John Janning was born May 1, 1914 in Carroll County, Iowa, the son of George and Mary (Mueller) Janning. He was baptized in the Catholic faith the day he was born. Cletus received his early education at Mount Carmel Catholic School before graduating from St. Bernard High School in Breda, Iowa.

Cletus served his country during World War II in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Bangor, Maine and later in the Azores.

In April of 1941, Cletus and Dorothy Lalley were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Cletus and Dorothy were loving and caring godparents to their nieces and nephews and to his grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Cletus owned and operated the last grocery store in downtown Storm Lake. He then was a salesman for Janning’s, Inc. in Storm Lake until his retirement in 1980.

A devout and faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Cletus was active in the Knights of Columbus. He was a Fourth Degree Knight and served as Grand Knight for three years.

Cletus became a resident of Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake in December of 1993, and has resided there until the time of his death.

Survivors include his brother, Ivan (Bettie) Janning of Storm Lake; sister Henrietta Kestel of Storm Lake; sister Mary Nyhus of Sioux City, Iowa; his many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Cletus was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; an infant child; and three brothers: Joseph, Clarence and Paul.

Josephine Naberhaus

Josephine Naberhaus, age 100, of Schaller, Iowa, died Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, Iowa.

Funeral Mass will be said on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 10:00 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller, with Father Larry Burns as celebrant. Burial will be in the church Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 21, 2006 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller. A Catholic Daughters Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service held at 7:00 p.m., both at the funeral home.

Josephine was born on November 30, 1905 to Frank and Mary Roeder. She was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Schaller, where she was a life-long member. The family resided at the Roeder family farm on Highway 20. She attended Sacred Heart School in Early until 8th grade, when she returned home to care for her father.

She was united in marriage to Anslem Naberhaus on February 7, 1939. The couple resided in the Galva and Schaller area until they moved to the Roeder family farm in 1943, where they raised their three boys, George, Richard and Edmund. Anslem passed away in 1959, leaving Josephine to raise their three sons. In addition to taking care of the boys and their home, she found time to be an active member of the Catholic Daughters, the Rosary Society, and she recently became a member of the Red Hat Club.

Her parents; her husband, Anslem; and her two brothers, Laurence and Herman Roeder, preceded Josephine in death.

She is survived by her sons, George and Catherine (Kotz) Naberhaus, Richard and Nancy (Sampers) Naberhaus, Edmund and Susan (Madsen) Naberhaus; her grandchildren, Marcia Naberhaus, Mary Jo Naberhaus, Ann and Tom Murphy, Connie and James Mason, Melissa Naberhaus, Scott and Brenda Naberhaus, Lee and Sally Naberhaus, Heath and Sue Naberhaus, Matt and Sarah Naberhaus, Annette and Jeff Goza, Brenda and Pat Zimmer, and Judy and Curt Roling; 20 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Dula Bosald; and numerous nieces and nephews.
