Roger E. Hinkeldey
Roger E. Hinkeldey, age 67, died on Thursday, July 22, 2004 following complications arising from recent heart surgery. Funeral services in Illinois were held at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home in Niles on Monday, July 26, 2004. Local services were held Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Alta. Burial is in St. John’s Cemetery, under the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Roger Edward Hinkeldey was born November 11, 1936 at the rural Alta, Iowa home of his parents, Edward and Leone (Fahr) Hinkeldey. He was baptized on November 22, 1936 at St. John Lutheran Lutheran Church in rural Alta (an area known to local residents as Hanover). Roger attended St. John Lutheran Parochial School through the 8th grade. He was confirmed on April 2, 1950 at St. John Lutheran Church.
Roger loved the farm, especially the Hereford cattle. He enjoyed helping his Dad with the chores and taking 4-H calves to the county fair. In 1951, he moved with his parents to Cherokee, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in May 1954. During his high school days he worked at the Fareway store and also at what was then called the Mental Health Institute in Cherokee as an aid. He went on to attend Valparaiso University, graduating in May 1958.
He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After graduation from Valparaiso, he served in the US Army, stationed in California. Following military duty, he accepted a position with Cities Service Oil Co. He held positions in Omaha, Nebraska, Kansas City, Missouri and Wichita, Kansas. He was named salesmen of the year for six of seven years with Cities Service Oil Company. In 1970 he was offered a position with Scovill Manufacturing, which involved a transfer to the Chicago area. He and his family settled in Prospect Heights Illinois. He remained with Scovill until the mid ‘80s. At this time he accepted a position at C.M. Smillie as a Division Manager, and remained with them until he retired in 2002.
His Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brothers remained life-long friends and Pinochle and Pitch playing companions. The only living brother attended Roger’s funeral service in Chicago earlier this week.
In 1964, Roger married Janet Schellpeper in Omaha Nebraska. In 1972, they adopted their son, Barry Edward, while living in the Chicago area. Barry and his wife, Melanie, blessed Roger’s life with three grandchildren, Tiffani, Joelle, and Justin.
Within the last ten recent years, Roger was challenged with numerous health problems, which he endured with a quiet fortitude and courage. This past May, he required a second heart surgery. Complications resulted which ultimately called him home to his Savior. His enduring deep faith carried him through these years of tribulation. Roger will be remembered as a devoted and loving father and grandfather who treasured his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Barry and wife Melanie Hinkeldey; his three dear grandchildren: Tiffani, Joelle and Justin; his sister, JoAnn and her husband Lloyd Boettcher of Storm Lake, Iowa; his companion, Renate Michel; many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Roger’s parents, Edward and Leone Hinkeldey, preceded him in death.
Dr. Robert Mailliard
Dr. Robert E. Mailliard, age 94, of Storm Lake, died March 1, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Funeral Mass will be Friday, March 5, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery with full military rites by AMVETS Post #66. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call anytime after 3:00 on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where a Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be held at 8:00 p.m. The family will be present from 7-9:00 p.m. Friends wishing to send condolences may do so online.
Robert Eloy Mailliard was born on January 25, 1910 to Ely and Clara (Huey) Mailliard at Randolph, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. Francis Catholic Church in Randolph. He spent his childhood in his parents’ home at Randolph, attending school there before graduating from St. Francis High School in 1927.
Robert served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps 46th Armed Medical Battilion, 4th Armed Division from March 17, 1941 until his honorable discharge as a Lt. Colonel on November 3, 1945. He received a Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster among his many citations and medals of distinguished service during the war.
Robert attended Wayne State College and then received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from Creighton University, where he was an honor student. Dr. Mailliard conducted a successful medical practice in Storm Lake for many years until his retirement in 1984.
Robert Mailliard was united in marriage to Alice L’Heureux in 1935 at Concord, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with a son and a daughter. Alice passed away in 1981. Dr. Mailliard married Helen Jolliffe in Arizona in 1983.
Dr. Mailliard was a lifelong member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge and was one of the original founders of the KAYL radio station in Storm Lake.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen, of Storm Lake; his son, Dr. Robert H. Mailliard of Bella Vista, AR; his daughter, Sharon and husband James Robinson of Morgantown, WV; eight grandchildren: Nancy Mailliard of West Des Moines, IA, Jennifer Reed of Cedar Rapids, IA, Mark Mailliard of Urbandale, IA, Mike Mailliard of Iowa City, IA, Julianna Caggiano of Bell Aire, TX, Diana Denton of Cary, NC, James Robinson of Cheyenne, WY, and Keith Robinson of Vienna, VA; brothers: Larry Mailliard of Kansas City, Missouri and Eugene Mailliard of Norfolk, Nebraska; and many extended family members and friends.
Preceding Dr. Mailliard in death were his parents; his first wife, Alice; and four brothers.
Tim D. Anderson
Tim D. Anderson, age 51, of Schaller, Iowa died on Friday, March 12, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Memorial services will be Monday at 3:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Schaller, with Pastor Carol Gailey officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery with Military Honors by the Schaller V.F.W. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call on Sunday, March 14, 2004 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present. Friends who desire to send condolences may do so online.
Tim Dewane Anderson was born on October 4, 1952 to Darrell D. “Andy” and Marguerite D. (Martin) Anderson in Sac City, Iowa. He grew up with his parents in Schaller, attending school there. Tim graduated from Schaller High School with the class of 1971. Many of his classmates remained his life-long friends. He enjoyed football, wrestling and played drums in the high school band. Tim enlisted in the Army in December of 1971 where he was an MP Spec. 4.
Upon discharge from the Army in December of 1973, Tim returned to Schaller to work for a variety of employers including Andy’s Café, the Town of Schaller, Christianson Company, the Hideout and Sidelines. In July of 1987, Tim was hired by the American Popcorn Company in Schaller as a mill operator. His versatility and knack for “fixing things and tinkering” led to his transfer to the Sioux City plant where he worked a variety of jobs. Eventually, he was assigned the position of Lead Outside Maintenance. His talents made him a natural for this position and he became a very valued and dependable employee in this capacity.
Tim married Linda Steen of Schaller in December of 1986. They had two children, Mallory and Matthew, who became a major focus of his life. Tim divorced in 2000 and later, Geri Cooperman became his close friend and companion.
Tim was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Schaller.
Tim enjoyed life and his family. He was especially fond of fishing, bowling, reading, hunting, camping and grilling. He was a Sci-fi enthusiast, especially enjoying the “Lord of the Rings.” Tim was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Iowa Hawkeyes fan as well as a trash/treasure collector for which he earned the nickname of “Macklin.” Special memories of Tim’s life were the times he spent gathering asparagus along the back roads to and from work, his love of liver and onions, his love of the Steelers, even when they were loosing, his “temper” whe he lost at games, his sense of humor and love of a practical joke. During his time working for the town, he picked up the additional nickname of “Turkey,” one he enjoyed a lot and passed on to others.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Marguerite of Schaller; children: Matthew Glen Anderson and Mallory Lynn Anderson, both of Schaller; step-son, Kenne A. Steen Jr. of Schaller; sisters: Rita Anderson Brown her husband John, and family of Kenyon, Minnesota, and Candace Anderson Dixon and sons of Hutchinson, Kansas; two step-grandchildren, Brittney and Steven Larson of Cedar Rapids; and many extended family members and friends.
Preceding Tim in death were his father, Darrell D. Anderson and step-daughter, Dawn L. Larson.
Ted Van Grootheest
Ted Van Grootheest, age 63, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Monday, May 24, 2004 at his home.
Funeral Services will be Friday, May 28, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 27, 2004 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 7:00-9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Ted was born April 30, 1941 at Doon, Iowa to Gerrit and Henrietta (Van Beek) Van Grootheest, Sr. During his childhood, he lived with his parents at their rural home near Doon. Ted attended Garfield #2 Country School and Doon High School.
On May 29, 1959, Ted was united in marriage to Helene De Boer in Rock Valley, Iowa. Their union was blessed with one son, Terry, and one daughter, Pamela.
Ted was Buena Vista County Assessor from 1981 until his death. Prior to coming to Storm Lake, he held the office of Deputy Assessor in Sioux County, Iowa from 1979 – 1981. Ted attained both his ICA and RES Designations in 1984, and in 1992 received the Certified General Real Property Appraiser Certification. In October of 2000, Ted was surprised, honored and humbled to receive the Outstanding Member Award at the Annual Conference in Des Moines. Ted has served the Institute of Iowa Certified Assessors as a Board Member, Vice-President and President. He was a member of ISAA, IAAO, Northwest Iowa Chapter IAAO and IICA, serving on many committees: Ways & Means, Executive Board, Equalization, Communications, Program and most recently on the Technology Committee with the Department of Revenue, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Web Page Committee and Chairman of the Public Relations/Communications Committee. He was very well-respected by his peers, always willing to assist anyone or help with any project.
He was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, and previously belonged to the 1st Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa and the 1st Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa, where he held the offices of Deacon, Sunday School Secretary, Couples Club President and was a Youth Group sponsor. Ted was also a Cub Scouts Leader in Orange City.
Ted was interested in computers, liked to travel and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking, especially making furniture. As a couple, he and Helene built and remodeled many homes.
A loving husband and devoted father, Ted treasured his family. He delighted in any time spent with his family, but especially prized the camping and in skiing trips with his children and summer vacations taken with his grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Helene; his son, Terry and wife Teresa Van Grootheest of Delphos, OH; his daughter Pamela and husband Howard Vlieger of Maurice, IA; grandchildren: Sarah, David and Rachael Vlieger, Abby, Emily and Taylor Van Grootheest and Justin, Marcus and Dylan Krendl; brothers: Gerrit and wife Jeanette Van Grootheest, Jr. and Albert and wife Grace Van Grootheest; sisters: Betty and husband Arie Den Hoed, and Mary and husband Jim Van Surksum; and many other relatives and friends.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter; his brother, Harvey Van Grootheest; and his father-in-law, Art De Boer.
Wilbur “Bud” Henrich
Funeral service for Wilbur “Bud” Henrich will be Friday, January 9, 2004, 10:30 am, at the United Methodist Church in Newell, Iowa, with Rev. Scott Holmes officiating. Special music provided by Cheryl Baughman. Pallbearers include: Edwin Henrich, Calvin Myers, Darvin Saddoris, Bill Baughman, William Henrich, Jr., and Donald Galbraith. Interment will be at the Newell Cemetery.
Visitation in Thursday, January 8, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
Wilbur “Bud” Henrich, age 85, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2004, Buena Vista Regional Hospital in Storm Lake.
Wilbur Henrich was born on April 2, 1918, to Charles and Emma (Paeper) Henrich on the family farm in Sac County. He attended country school and was baptized in the Galbraith Methodist Church south of Newell. He started farming at a young age with the help of his older brothers.
Wilbur was united in marriage to Evelyn Darling on April 3, 1937, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. To this union was born a son, Dennis, and a daughter, Coleen.
Wilbur and Evelyn farmed for 45 years before retiring and moving to their present home in Newell.
Bowling, playing cards, golfing and taking bus tours were some of the activities Wilbur enjoyed. He held several offices in the Newell United Methodist Church and also served on the Newell School Board.
Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Carl, Ernest, Milton, Glen, Elwood, and William, Sr.; and one sister Gusta Myers.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn; his son Dennis Henrich and his wife Donna of Cherokee, IA, and daughter Coleen Baughman and her husband Arvid of Newell, Iowa; and one sister Emma Saddoris of Newell. Five grandchildren mourn his passing: Jennifer Henrich of Des Moines, Amy (Tim) Hynds of Sioux City, IA, Dr. Kristin Baughman of Kent, OH, Dean (Dawn) Baughman of Newell, Shannon (Sandy) Baughman of Atlantic, IA, and eight great grandchildren; extended family; and many friends.
Cyril Heissel
Cyril "Cy" Heissel, age 75, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa after a lengthy illness.
Funeral Service will be held 10:00 am Saturday, October 1, 2005 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery in LeMars, Iowa.
Friends may call on Friday, September 30 from 3:00-8:00 pm at the Fratkze & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A Legion of Mary Rosary will be said at 3:30 pm and a parish vigil service is planned for 7:00 pm.
Cy was born on January 29, 1930 to William and Elizabeth (Mairose) Heissel in LeMars, Iowa. He attended school in Merrill, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1948.
In 1951, Cy was united in marriage to Janice Crowley in LeMars, where the couple lived until 1989. They were blessed with a family of four children: Julie, Kirk, Diane and Dan.
After farming for several years, Cy joined the auto business, working in the parts department of Pew’s Buick and Pontiac. He later switched to sales, working for Pew’s, Whelan Motors, Chuck Wood Chevrolet and then retired from selling insurance in 1980.
While in LeMars, Cy was active in Sertoma Club, the LeMars Jaycees, and the Isaac Walton League. He served in the Iowa National Guard for seven years, retiring as First Lieutenant. Cy was also an avid hunter and fisherman. It was the love of the water and fishing that brought Cy and Jan to Storm Lake, where they have lived for the past 16 years.
Cy and Jan are members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 54 years, Jan of Storm Lake and children Julie (Jim) Mueller of Crystal Lake; Illinois, Kirk (Lee) Heissel of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Diane (Keith) Culver of Hinton, Iowa; and Dan (Carol) Heissel of Everly, Iowa. He is further survived by fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters Oliva Muir of St. Louis, Missouri and Mary Lihudis of LeMars; other extended family and a host of friends.
Cy was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth Heissel.
Dean Bowers
Dean Bowers, age 72, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Monday, June 27, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.
Memorial services will be Friday, July 1, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service, at the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call anytime after 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 30, 2005 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will greet friends from 6-8:00 pm. A Masonic Service will be held at the funeral home at 8:00 p.m.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake in Lieu of Flowers.
Dean Oliver Bowers was born February 10, 1933 in Churdan, Iowa to Frank O. and Anna (Spence) Bowers. He grew up in the Churdan area where he attended country school and graduated from Bagley High School in 1951. Following graduation, Dean attended two years at Drake University and two years at Buena Vista College, graduating in 1955. He played baseball in high school and at both colleges, and loved all sports.
During his youth, Dean was baptized into the Baptist Church. In 1968, he joined the Lakeside Presbyterian Church, where Dean was an active member. He loved serving the Lord and celebrated his faith in his many positions in the church: Elder, choir member, soloist, Worship Commission, Organ Committee and the Food For Life Program.
On June 10, 1956, Dean was united in marriage to June Ellwanger in Lake View, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children: Nancy and Bruce.
Over the years, Dean worked as an office manager and accountant. He began his employment at AGRICO in Humboldt and Clinton in 1955. Then in 1968, Dean started worked for Vilas & Co., Thompson, Inc., Bil Mar and eventually Sara Lee until his retirement in 1996.
Dean was an active member of the Storm Lake community, as a member of the Hy-Noon Kiwanis (past board member and song leader), Jewel Lodge (AFAM #309), Abu Bekr Shrine (member of the Shrine Band), as well as on the Hall of Fame Committee at Buena Vista University.
In addition, Dean was a member of the Storm Lake Muni Golf Course and currently served on the redesign committee for the AWAYSIS Project. He loved all sports, fishing, and music, for which he participated in the Community Chorus performances of "The Messiah" and "Camelot" as well as others.
Above all, Dean loved his family and was proud of his community, as evidenced in his tireless devotion to local events.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, June Bowers of Storm Lake; daughter, Nancy Ann Mulder and her husband Wade of Crooks, South Dakota; son Bruce Alan Bowers and fiancé Kristen Weber of Chicago, Illinois; one grandson, Garrison Mulder; three brothers: Ray Bowers and his wife Bessie of Junction, Texas, Don Bowers and Dorothy of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dale Bowers and his wife Jeanine of Tucson, Arizona; one sister, Wanda Gilligan and her husband Bill of Grimes, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law and extended family members and friends.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harry and James Matthews.
