Liliana Drake
DrakeLiliana Drake, 72, of Sioux City died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Marvin J. Boes officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Drake was born May 29, 1926, in Viarreggio, Italy, the daughter of Gino and Theresa Marie Pucci.

She married Joseph Bell Drake on May 22, 1945, in Viarreggio. She moved to Sioux City in 1947, where she was a homemaker. He died March 12, 1982, in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and enjoyed knitting and cooking.

Survivors include three sons, Silvio Pucci of Italy, Antonio "Tony" Drake and James Bell "Jimmy" Drake, both of Sioux City; three daughters, Maria Fields-Spann and Liliana "Boojie" Drake-Bryson, both of Minneapolis, Minn., and JoAnn Elliot of Mitchellville, Md.; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Daniel, Kevin and Christopher Fields, Tony Jr. and James Drake and Jason Smith.

Glenn F. Schumacher
SchumacherGlenn F. Schumacher, 50, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 30, 1998, while on vaction in Burleson, Texas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Robert J. Schimmer pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Floyd Post 1973. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Schumacher was born Aug. 20, 1947, in Chatsworth, Iowa, the son of George and Lorraine (Homer) Schumacher. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, serving in Vietnam in 1967. His decorations and awards include three Bronze Star Medals.

He married Linda Derochie on Aug. 22, 1970, in Sioux City. He was employed as a superintendent with Kay Dee Feeds for 33 years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Todd and Brad of Sioux City; his mother of Sioux City; five brothers and their wives, Eugene and Dorothy of Burleson, Texas, John and Dorothy of Arlington, Mass., Leo and Sheila of Lincoln, Neb., Lawrence and Miriam of Portland, Ore., and Jerry and Lisa of Fairfax Station, Va.; four sisters, Colleen and her husband Mark Tighe of Homer, Neb., Elaine and her husband Arnie Schulter of Burleson, Texas, Georgia and her husband Ronald Loidl of McAllen, Texas, and Nancy Hodgins of Houston, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Paul, Ron and Mark Tighe, Kerry, Kevin and Tim Derochie.

Doris M. Briegel
BriegelDoris M. Briegel, 80, of Sergeant Bluff died Monday, June 29, 1998, at her residence following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sergeant Bluff Community United Methodist Church, with Dr. Paul Samuelson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Briegel was born June 17, 1918, in Armour, S.D., the daughter of Steve and Opal (Moles) Connell. She attended Douglas County rural school and graduated from Geddes High School in Geddes, S.D.

She married John Ivan Briegel on Oct. 10, 1942, in Reno, Nev. The couple moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1946, where they owned and operated Briegel's Garage.

She was a member of Sergeant Bluff United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Charles and Sherri of Davenport, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Mary and Dan O'Neill of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Robert and Mahalia Connell of Huron, S.D.; four sisters, Bernadine McClure of Sioux City, Francis Pokorny of Port St. Luci, Fla., Hazel Schmidt of Ainsworth, Neb., and Marvel Lucas of Omaha, Neb.; and five grandchildren, Thomas and Amy Briegel, Molly, Shannon and Brianne O'Neill.

Memorials may be directed to Sergeant Bluff United Methodist Church or Hospice of Siouxland.

Lowell E. Anderson
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Lowell E. Anderson, 78, of Marine, Ill., formerly of Correctionville, died Wednesday in Marine.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine. Burial will be in Marine Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, at the funeral home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

Donald L. Speelmon
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Donald L. Speelmon, 80, of Cherokee died Wednesday at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. There will be no visitation.

Dale M. Gifford

CHEROKEE, Iowa - Dale M. Gifford, 85, of Cherokee died of an apparent stroke Monday, June 29, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Timothy Schott officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m. said by the Knights of Columbus, at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Mr. Gifford was born Nov. 8, 1912, in Cherokee County, Iowa, the son of Lyle and Jenny (Timmins) Gifford. He attended country school and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1930. He was employed with Matt Furniture Company.

He married Marian Martin on May 2, 1935, in Cherokee. He went to work for Illinois Central Railroad in 1936, retiring as a conductor in 1979.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he was an usher, the United Transportation Union, the Knights of Columbus, the Degree of Honor, the Sanford Museum Association, the Northwest Chapter of the Iowa Archaeological Association, and the I.A.S. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and worked the hospital cart.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Ronald M. and Karen Gifford of Indianapolis, Ind., and James M. Gifford and Laura Karr of Lebanon, Ind.; a daughter, Jean Anne Doran of Boone, Iowa; six grandchildren, Nancy Gifford, Michele Bazar, Mary Beth Allen, Ronald M. Gifford II, Jennifer Doran and Jeffrey Doran; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Vivian and Ed Fountain of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Kempton of Shelbyville, Ky.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Kay Gifford, two brothers and a sister.

Esther I. Bartels
MAPLETON, Iowa - Esther I. Bartels, 87, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Wednesday at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sioux City. There will be no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home of Sioux City is in charge of the arrangements.

Art Lowe
SPENCER, Iowa - Art Lowe, 82, of Spencer died Wednesday at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Little Sioux Lutheran Cemetery at Milford, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Janet C. Donner

Janet C. Donner, 69, of Sioux City died Friday, July 29, 2005, at her residence following an extended illness.

There will be a private memorial service at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home.

Janet was born Jan. 22, 1936, in Norfolk, Neb., the daughter of George and Velma "Dolly" (Longnecker) Cross. She graduated from Norfolk High School and attended Wayne State College, where she received her teaching certificate.

She married Eugene K. "Red" Donner on Aug. 4, 1955, in Hartington, Neb. Janet taught at country schools in the Norfolk area for several years. Later, she taught at Liberty Academy in South Sioux City.

Janet collected porcelain dolls. Her passion in life was shown through her loving care of her children and grandchildren. She was a devout Christian.

Survivors include her husband; seven children, Rodney Donner and his wife, JoAnn of Sioux City, Diana King and her husband, Ted of Sioux City, Richard Donner of South Sioux City, Sherri Kobb and her husband, Matt of Walnut, Iowa, Randy Donner and his wife, Coral of Jefferson, S.D., Kristi Donelson and her husband, Roy of South Sioux City, and Jeannie Aubele and her husband, Ray of Sioux City; as well as 21 grandchildren and another on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Robert.

Tacanku W. Thomas

SANTEE, Neb. -- Tacanku Wakan "Canku" (His Holy Road) Thomas, 14, of Santee journeyed to the Spirit World Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005.

Services will be 10 a.m. Sunday at his home, where he resided with his grandparents, Ron and Thelma Thomas, 89363 539th Ave., the Hobu Creek District on the Santee Sioux Nation Reservation. Marvin Helper of Red Shirt, S.D., and Ron and Rick Thomas of Santee will officiate. The drum group will be Mato Pejuta. Traditional Dakota wake and burial services will be at his home beginning today and continuing until service time Sunday. Arrangements are under the direction of Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton, S.D.

Canku was born April 3, 1991, in Sioux City, the son of Anthony "Tony" Thomas and Lori Anne DeCora. He was a freshman at Niobrara Public School. He previously had attended the Santee Community School in Santee and Wolf Creek Middle School in Pine Ridge, S.D.

He was a member of the Sioux Nation. He loved hunting and fishing with his friends and relatives. He also enjoyed playing basketball. He was an active participant of his traditional Dakota ways. He was a singer, a Grass Dancer and a proud Dakota.

He is survived by his paternal grandparents, Ron and Thelma Thomas; maternal grandmother, Patricia Buffalo Chief DeCora of Sioux City; a sister, Kayla DeCora of Florida; an aunt (mom) Veronica Thomas of Winnebago, Neb.; an uncle, Redwing Thomas of South Sioux City; and aunts, Germaine John and Ila DeCora of Sioux City and Kathleen and Ileen DeCora of Santee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and maternal great-grandmother, Goldie Redwing Wiley.

Pallbearers will be Redwing Thomas, Carlos Cariaga, Wakinyan Thomas, James Star, Justes Wilson, Robbie Goulette, Orlando Frazier, Lonnie John Jr., Clyde Hoffman and Josh Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be A.J. Griffin, Vinny Provost, Austin Saunsoci, Carl John, Kenny Provost, Hilton John, Devin Goulette, Cedric Denney, Issac Denney, Anpo Star, Cetan Thomas, Mato Thomas, Dakota YellowCloud and Zeke Halstead.

Gigi Knudsen

SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Gigi Knudsen, 44, South Sioux City, passed away Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005, at her father's residence in rural Sioux City after a long illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, South Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.

Mildred A. Groen

GEORGE, Iowa -- Mildred A. Groen, 75, of George died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at a Sioux Falls, S.D. hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hope Reformed Church in rural George. Burial will be in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Bolin Funeral Home in George.

Gerald L. Groen

LITTLE ROCK, Iowa -- Gerald L. Groen, 61, of Little Rock died Friday, March 31, 2006, at Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Buss-Johnson Post 316. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Walton-Roste Funeral Home in Sibley.

Howard L. Van Kekerix

SHELDON, Iowa -- Howard L. Van Kekerix, 83, of Sheldon passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at Prairie View Home in Sheldon.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Revs. David Brower and Gordon Bloemendaal officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 145 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7354 of Sheldon. Arrangements are under the direction of Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Howard Leroy Van Kekerix, the son of Sam and Martha (Sneller) Van Kekerix, was born Jan. 8, 1923, on a farm near Sheldon. He received his education through the eighth grade at a country school near Sheldon. He received his honorary diploma from Sheldon Community School in 2001. He entered the U.S. Army in February 1944, serving as a private first class with Company C, 15th Armored Infantry Battalion, 5th Armory Division, during World War II.

On Feb. 17, 1950, he was united in marriage to Suzanna Marie Westra at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. After their marriage, the couple moved to a farm one quarter mile east of Sheldon. He retired from farming in 1989, then moved into Sheldon in 1992.

He was a member of First Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory. He was on the board of directors for the Sheldon Farmers Co-op Elevator and was a member of the Sheldon Prairie Queen Kiwanis. He was a Sheldon Marigold volunteer. He enjoyed camping, golfing, fishing and spending his winter retirement months in Arizona. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and playing pool with his grandchildren (and letting them win).

Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Suzanna of Sheldon; three children and their spouses, Jacquelyn and Dennis Vande Griend of Doon, Iowa, Kenneth and Lisa Van Kekerix of Sheldon and Leroy and Jasey Van Kekerix of Orange City, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Michael Vande Griend and his wife, Jill, Kevin and Brian Vande Griend, Ashley, Amanda, Benjamin, Joshua and Kinzie Layne Van Kekerix; two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Jacob Vande Griend; a brother and his wife, Elmer and Helen Van Kekerix of Matlock, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Suzanna Westra of Sanborn, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mildred Van Kekerix of La Palma, Calif., Thelmar Jansma of Dell Rapids, S.D., Jake and Alma Westra of Sheldon, Hermina and Daryle Hilbrands of George, Iowa, Bertha Dammann of Vesper, Wis., Marlowe and Lu Westra of Tacoma, Wash., and Ronald Westra of Tallahassee, Fla.; other relatives; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond Van Kekerix and his wife, Alice, and Weldon Van Kekerix; a sister, Martha Jansma; his father-in-law, Peter J. Westra; and a brother-in-law, Darell Dammann.
