Ethel Kosgard
DAVENPORT -- Services for Ethel M. Kosgard, a resident of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Halligan-McCabe-De Vries Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Additional visitation will be noon until service time Saturday. Mrs. Kosgard died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, following a courageous 12-year battle with cancer. Ethel Mae Hall was born July 31, 1938, in Iowa City, to George and Mabel (Jorgenson) Hall. She married William T. Kosgard on March 30, 1957, in Columbus, Miss. They recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Ethel enjoyed making crafts of all kinds as a hobby. Memorials can be made to a memorial fund established in Ethel's name. Survivors include her husband, Bill, sons and daughters-in-law, William and Mickey Kosgard, and Kenneth and Misty Kosgard, and daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Charles Williams, Karla Kosgard, and Julia and Robert Sird, all of Davenport, and Katherine and Layton McDonald, Columbus Junction, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and a great-grandson; brothers, Robert, and spouse, Zelma Hall, Quincy, Ill., and Richard Hall, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and sisters, Beverly, and spouse, Herbert Jones, and Estella, and spouse, Harold White, both of Davenport. Her parents, a sister, Betty, and brother, William, preceded her in death. "Mom was a loving and caring soul, who loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom loved to go fishing with Dad on the river. She also was a big bingo nut. Mom was a very proud 24-year member of A.A. We were very proud of her and the way she lived her life. Mom will be missed very much by all of us."
Ellwood Daehler
CHADWICK, Ill. -- Services for Ellwood W. Daehler, Chadwick, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Burial will be in Chadwick Cemetery . Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Daehler died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Freeport Memorial Hospital. He was a self-employed electrician for 54 years. He also worked with his brother at Don's Hardware, Chadwick. He was born April 11, 1916, in Fairhaven Township, rural Chadwick. He married Betsy Groharing in 1967. She died in 1986. He married Lois Vandermyde in 1990. Memorials may be made to Chadwick Ambulance Association. Survivors include his wife, Lois; stepsons, Keith Vandermyde, Lanark, and Neal Vandermyde, Savanna; two step-grandchildren; a sister, Eileene Butler, Frederick, Md.; and brothers, Arlo and Donavan, both of Chadwick.
Anthony Drury
FULTON, Ill. -- Memorial services for Anthony M. "Tony" Drury, Imperial Beach, Calif., will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Fulton. Burial will be in Lusk Memorial Cemetery , Albany. Mr. Drury died March 31, 2000, at Sharp Chula Vista Hospital, Chula Vista, Calif. He worked 31 years at Motorola, Quasar and Matshushita, Franklin Park. He retired in 1997. He was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Port Byron. He married Jane Jackson in 1963 in Earlham, Iowa. He married Marcella Villalobos in 1978 in Chicago. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association. Survivors include his wife, Marcella; daughters, Elizabeth Trautmann, Madison, Wis., Susan Conley, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jessica Drury, Berkeley, Calif.; a son, Christopher, San Diego; his mother, Isabel Drury, Clinton, Iowa; and a brother, Richard, Ukiah, Calif.
Anna Ostrem Blumenstein
COLUMBUS JCT., Iowa -- Anna I. Ostrem Blumenstein, a resident of Colonial Manor, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000. The body was cremated. Burial will be later. Jones Funeral Home, Washington, was in charge of arrangements. Anna Prescott was born June 24, 1901, in Dunbar. She married Chester Ostrem in 1924 in Albert Lea, Minn. He died in 1938. She married Ray Blumenstein in 1950. He died in 1977. She was a country school teacher before her marriage. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Strickler, Des Moines; stepdaughters, Lois Bue, Corinth, Texas, and Joan Dunn, Georgetown, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Albert Oldenburg
DAVENPORT -- Services for Albert F. Oldenburg, formerly of Davenport, will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Mr. Oldenburg died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Bettendorf Health Care Center, after a brief illness. He farmed in Blue Grass Township and later was employed at Neal Rohlf Florist and was a longtime employee of East Locust Hardware. He was born in Scott County. Survivors include a son, Gary A., Marco Island, Fla.; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vera Schlunsen, Davenport.
Lucy Anderson
TIPTON, Iowa -- Lucy M. Anderson, of 50 Plum St., died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Tipton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery , Tipton. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton, with a King's Daughters service at 5 p.m. by Ida Mansfield King's Daughters. An Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Mrs. Anderson had worked at Saga Food Service, Cornell College, Mount Vernon. Lucy Chaney was born Dec. 31, 1911, in Davenport. She married Donald Anderson in 1929 in Iowa City. He died in 1979. Memorials may be made to Order of Eastern Star Heart Project or the church. Survivors include a daughter, Lois Wehde, Storm Lake; sons, Richard and Glen "Avie," both of Tipton; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marquerite Fogo, West Branch; and brothers, Charles "Ted," Wilton, and Robert "Bob," West Liberty.
Walter Hinkley
BETTENDORF -- Services for Walter L. Hinkley, Bettendorf, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at McGinnis, Chambers and Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation is 1 p.m. until the time of the services. Military graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Mr. Hinkley died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. He was born July 13, 1927, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of William C. and Margaret Marie (Ryan) Hinkley. He married Mary Phyllis Collins on June 18, 1950, at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Muscatine. Mr. Hinkley was a draftsman and engineer working at Stanley Engineering in Muscatine, G.B. Cox Co. in Bettendorf, U.S. Environcom in Davenport and Muscatine and CDI Corp. working at Alcoa. He also owned and operated Electronic TV in Davenport from 1968-1974. Mr. Hinkley served in the Marine Corps from 1945-1951. He enjoyed working on electronics in his shop at his home. Survivors include his wife, Mary Phyllis; his daughter, Paula Haas, Logansville, Ga.; his son, Jeff, Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Phoenix Haas, Cpl. Brandon Haas, Lindsay Haas and Jevon Ringle-Hinkley and his wife, Karen; his great-granddaughters, Katlin Oliver and Victoria Hinkley; and his sister, Annette Orr-Riechert, Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Burnett.
Dianne Smith
BETTENDORF -- Services for Dianne Kay Smith, Bettendorf, formerly of Roann, Ind., and Ada, Mich., will be 5 p.m. today at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Additional visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Home in Roann, Ind. Private family burial services will be held Mrs. Smith died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, after a brave battle with cancer. Dianne Kay Gaff was born Oct. 7, 1946, in Warsaw, Ind., the daughter of Lee and Dorothy (Wright) Gaff. She graduated from Northfield High School in Roann and Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. She married Lawrence Smith in Roann on March 9, 1969. Dianne was a substitute teacher for the Pleasant Valley School District and was a former elementary school teacher. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf, where she served as chairman of the blood drive. She enjoyed rubber stamping, visiting Marco Island, Fla., and traveling through the Smoky Mountains. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Survivors include her husband, Larry; her daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Jeff Zawacki, Clarkston, Mich., and Kristen and Greg Lendzion, Naples, Fla.; her grandson, Jacob Zawacki; her parents, Lee and Dorothy Gaff, Roann; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Steve Williams, Plainfield, Ind., and Jan and Randy Engledow, Silver Lake, Ind.; her brothers, Mike Gaff, Cross City, Fla., and Jerry Gaff, Vandalia, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
Karl Hellman
BETTENDORF -- Opening remarks and shared remembrances of Karl H. Hellman, Bettendorf, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will immediately follow until noon. Private burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Mr. Hellman died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at his home in Bettendorf. A life-long resident of Scott County, Mr. Hellman graduated from Davenport High School and attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport. During World War II, Mr. Hellman served with the 4th Armored Division in Europe, receiving a Bronze Star citing his significant and courageous actions performed with "utter disregard for his own safety." Returning to the Quad-Cities area after the war, Mr. Hellman managed to blend several pursuits successfully. In addition to being a furniture sales representative and distributor, he became a furniture manufacturer in his own right with the founding of his company, Challenge Inc. in the 1960s. Opting for a challenge of a different sort, he also purchased a farm and began farming while concurrently expending his entrepreneurial endeavors. During a political period in Mr. Hellman's life, he served on the Pleasant Valley School Board, including a stint as its president and he was twice the Democratic nominee from the 5th district in the Iowa House. In recent years, Mr. Hellman enjoyed working on projects on his farm and he possessed a keen interest in the laws of probabilities as they related to floating games of chance. Survivors include a daughter, Clarissa (George) Bergeman, Round Hill, Va.; his sons, Lance (Joanne Holman) Hellman, Portsmouth, N.H., and Brett (Meredith) Hellman, Mequon, Wis.; grandchildren, Michaela Hellman, Boston, Peter Hellman, Chicago, Jennifer Wilfrid, Madison, Wis., and Jessica Bergeman, San Francisco; sisters, Mrs. Eugene Kalina, of Illinois, Mrs. Jack Zimmel, of California, and Mrs. Elmer Levin, of Iowa; and a brother, Chuck Hellman, of Michigan. Mr. Hellman and his wife, Virginia, were married for 52 years until her death in 1991.
Mary Louise Katzenburger
DAVENPORT -- Memorial services for Mary Louise Katzenburger, Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Inurnment will be in Mt. Joy Cemetery , Mt. Joy, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Mary died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Mary Louise Bailey was born June 13, 1928, to Glenn and Pearl (Burgess) Bailey. She married Glenn Nehlsen in January 1951. They were later divorced. She then married Charles Katzenburger on Oct. 23, 1976. He preceded her in death in 1982. She retired as a bookkeeper for Bendix Co. after 25 years. Memorials may be made to American Lung Association or American Cancer Society. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John "Mike" Higgins, Eldridge, Iowa; a son, William Nehlsen, Dubuque, Iowa; grandchildren, Jenny Higgins, Bloomington, Ill., and Jeremy Higgins, Davenport; and a sister, Barbara Teeter, Bonapart, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Katzenburger and Glenn Nehlsen; a granddaughter, Heather Higgins; her parents; a sister, Margaret Hackley; and brothers, Wayne and Robert Bailey.
