Wilmina Henry
WHAT CHEER -- Wilmina Lura Henry, 88, of Unionville, Mo., formerly of What Cheer, died Feb. 13, 2003, at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 7, 1915 at What Cheer to John and Esther Wilson Shirlaw. She married Alex G. Henry Feb. 4, 1934 at Oskaloosa. He preceded her in death Nov. 7, 1991.
She was raised by her mother and step-father William Shirlaw, after her father died. She was raised between What Cheer and Davenport and graduated from Davenport High School. She had also resided at Gibson. She was active in many community events and taught adult education sewing in Thornburg. She was a member of the Gibson Presbyterian Church, and taught children's Sunday school; a member of Gibson Ladies Aid; the Dorcus Society; the Jolly Neighbor Club; the Birthday Club; and an active member of the Eastern Star where she held many local and state offices.
She is survived by a son, Alex Henry Jr., of Northglenn, Colo., a daughter, Beverly Sutton of Unionville, Mo.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Bonnie Hultgren, Dawny Porter, and Lois Van Maanen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Donald Eugene "Dude"; a sister, Billie Jane Jecklin; and five brothers, Floyd, John Jr., James, Robert, and Lewis Shirlaw.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Harden Funeral Chapel, What Cheer with Rev. Mike Conn officiating. Interment will follow at the Sixteen Cemetery
near Thornburg.
Visitation will be after 8 a.m. Saturday with the family present 1 to 2 p.m.
A memorial has been established to either Cerebral Palsy or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Todd Ferguson
NEW SHARON -- Todd C. Ferguson, 31, of rural New Sharon, died May 31, 2002, near Keswick.
He was born May 2, 1971, to Roy and Donna Bond Ferguson in Oskaloosa. He married Carol Goemaat June 26, 1992, in Oskaloosa.
He graduated from the North Mahaska High School, New Sharon, with the class of 1989. During high school, he was very active in 4H and FFA. He had been employed as a welder at Vermeer Manufacturing, Pella, for 12 years, and presently was employed in farming. He attended the Central Reformed Church, Oskaloosa.
Surviving are his wife; his father, Roy Ferguson of New Sharon; his mother and step father, Donna and Jack Smith of New Sharon; and his maternal grandparents, Gerald and Eunice Bond of New Sharon.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Earl and Audrey Ferguson.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Don DeGlopper officiating. Burial will be in the Union Mills Cemetery
near New Sharon. There will be a Family Prayer Service at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in the west wing of the church.
Visitation will be all day today (Monday) in Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to either the New Sharon Fire Department or the American Epilepsy Foundation.
Norma Celania
OTTUMWA -- Norma J. Celania, 73, of Ottumwa, died 8:30 p.m. April 2, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.
She was born Feb. 28, 1930 in Monroe to Dick and Edith Hoagland Van Ekeren. She married Donald L. Celania Sept. 29, 1951 in Ottumwa. He preceded her in death July 10, 1991.
A graduate of Monroe High School, she received her R.N. from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Ottumwa.
She was a surgical nurse at St. Joseph Hospital and Ottumwa Regional Health Center. She was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia White of Woodbridge, Va. and Maribeth Karwath of Davenport; two sons, Dr. Chris Celania and Daniel Celania both of Ottumwa; nine grandchildren; two brothers, James Van Ekeren of Montgomery, Ill. and Philip Van Ekeren of Monroe.
She was preceded in death by a brother Raymond Van Ekeren.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. A Time of Prayer will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Charles Baird
OTTUMWA -- Memorial services for Charles Allen Baird, 80, formerly of Ottumwa, who died May 27, 2002, in Casa Grande, Ariz., will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Shrine of Memories Funeral Home with Rev. Phil Griffith officiating.
Burial of cremains will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery . Military rites and honors will be conducted by the Walter B. Schafer Post 775 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion.
Jerry Bailey
WEST BRANCH -- Jerry Lee Bailey, 58, of rural West Branch died May 31, 2002, following injuries suffered when a tractor he was driving rolled over near his home.
He was born Dec. 28, 1943, in Schuyler County, Mo., to Estel and Helen White Goosey. He married Gay Foster in Mark.
He attended school in Davis County and Appanoose County. He graduated from Centerville High School. He had operated Jack's Shoe Store in Centerville before moving to California. After returning to West Branch, he owned a semi and drove for Newcomb Trucking in Muscatine.
Surviving are two daughters, Paula Diane Bailey of Keystone, S.D., and Penny Lynn Bailey of Ottumwa; father, Estel Goosey; sister, Marilyn Bauman of West Branch; and five half brothers and a half sister.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Bailey; and his grandparents.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Barker Funeral Home, West Branch.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established.
Maynard Hawk
BRIGHTON -- Maynard R. Hawk, 82, of 2663 159th Blvd. died at 12:15 p.m. May 29, 2002, at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield.
He was born June 6, 1919, to Rollie Russell and Laura Radiley Hawk in Jefferson County near Pleasant Plain. He married Esther May Schillerstrom Nov. 29, 1940 in Kirksville, Mo. She died Oct. 19, 2001.
He is survived by a son, David of Maplewood, N.J.; a daughter, Rachel Engwall of Fairfield; three grandsons; four granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Keith of Ottumwa; and sisters Ethel Hawk and Viola Diehl of Fairfield.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Darrel Dean, and brothers Kenneth and Willard.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Raymond Funeral Home, Fairfield, with Pastor Marvin Robeck officiating. Burial will be in the Lower Richwood Cemetery
near Germanville.
Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with the family present.
Memorials have been established to the Lower Richwood Cemetery , First Lutheran Church or to Crossroads Hospice.
Lyle Allsup
OSKALOOSA - Lyle E. Allsup, 87, of Oskaloosa died June 3, 2002, at Pleasant Park Estates Nursing Home, Oskaloosa.
He was born March 10, 1915, in Wright to Delmer Von and Lorena Faye Moore Allsup. He married Lavonia Meinhardt Aug. 15, 1936. She died April 2, 1937. He married Nona Bell Whitlatch July 29, 1938, in Denison.
Surviving are his wife; and a sister, Maxine Peden of Modesto, Calif.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today, Thursday, June 6, at Forest Cemetery
with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Friends may meet at Garland-VanArkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel at 1:30 p.m. to go to the cemetery together. Interment will be with military honors by Harry L. Anderson Post No. 34 of the American Legion and the VFW.
Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice.
James L. Phillips
OSKALOOSA - James L, Phillips, 79, of Medford, Ore., and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Dec. 19, 2002, at Providence Medford Medical Center, Ore.
He was born March 7, 1922, in Oskaloosa, the son of Alvin and Louisa Anna McAdams Phillips.
He is survived by a sister, Margaret Bishop of Waterloo, and a stepbrother, Jack Franklin of Ottumwa.
The body was cremated. A memorial gathering will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, in Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, the Rev. Casey Cain officiating. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery
near Delta.
Barbara Blew
OTTUMWA - Barbara Lois Blew, 73, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Ottumwa, died April 30, 2002, in Tucson.
She was born May 24, 1928, in Albia to Rollie and Mildred Mahin Brown. She married Richard M. Blew Nov. 10, 1946. He preceded her in death Sept. 22, 1973.
Surviving are sons Dr. Mark Blew of Tucson, Ariz., Dr. Stanley Blew and Dr. Robert Blew, both of Ottumwa; five grandsons; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert J. Brown of Maryville, Mo.; and a sister, Margaret Peterson of Turlock, Calif.
She has been cremated.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Friday, May 10, at Reece Funeral Home with the Revs. Stephanie Raphael-Nakos and Dale Gray officiating. Inurnment will be in Union Chapel Cemetery
north of Albia.
Family visitation will be one hour prior to the services.
Memorials may be made to Ottumwa Public Library or Willard Street United Methodist Church.
