KATHRYN 'BILLIE' R. SCHARLAU
MASON CITY - Kathryn "Billie" R. Scharlau, 87, of 203 S. Monroe, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Mercy Health Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Robert A. Towner, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial ParkCemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

Kathryn was born Nov. 24, 1912, the daughter of George and Calla (Banning) Wiltgen in Mason City. She was raised and attended school here in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in the class of 1930.
On May 9, 1937, Kathryn was united in marriage to Carl Scharlau at St. John's Episcopal Church in Mason City. Kathryn worked for many years with her husband, Carl, as a bookkeeper at Ideal Plumbing and Heating.
In her spare time she could often be found playing bridge, reading mysteries or working cross-word puzzles.
Those thankful for having shared in Kathryn's life include her son, Lynn Scharlau and his wife, Alice, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Kay Nachazel and her friend, Mark Staley, of Meservey, and John Scharlau and his wife, Tina, of Mason City; five great-grandchildren, Brian Scharlau and his friend, Amy, of Davenport, Brent Scharlau of Mason City, Brandon Scharlau of Mason City, Stacy Nachazel of Meservey, and Tyler Staley of Meservey; and one great-great-grandson, Jacob.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl on Dec. 19, 1983; one son, Jay in 1963; and one brother, Jack.

PAUL H. COTY
CEDAR RAPIDS - Paul H. Coty, 90, a former Mason City resident, died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at the Willow Gardens Care Center in Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Coty III officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation was held Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home and continue from 9 a.m. until time of services today.

Paul was born Nov. 23, 1909, the son of Paul and Margaret (Wilhelm) Coty in Cleveland, Ohio. He was united in marriage to Spizie Farley on June 21, 1937, in East Moline, Ill. Paul was an auto detailer for many years at Sedars Motor Company before moving to the Twin Cities.
Paul was an avid reader of history. He was also an enthusiastic major league baseball fan who enjoyed watching the
Minnesota Twins or the St. Louis Cardinals play.
Those thankful for having shared in Paul's life include his wife, Spizie of Iowa City; five daughters, Beverly Burrell and her husband, James, of Cedar Rapids, Pauletta Kipper of Iowa City, Dianna Bowers and her husband, Willie, of Iowa City, Andrea Coty, of Omaha, Neb and Carolyn Coty, of Mason City; six sons, Paul H. Coty Jr. and his wife, Fran, of Baltimore, Md., Dwight Coty, of Spokane, Wash., Ralph Coty, of Iowa City, Michael Coty and his friend, Pat Ferleman, of Mason City, Joseph Coty and his wife, Sharon, of Chicago, Ill. and Pierre Coty, of Minneapolis, Minn.
Mr. Coty was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Pauline Coty.

JACK A. ANGELL
NASHUA - Jack A. Angell, 55, of Nashua, died Monday evening (Jan. 24, 2000) suddenly at his home near Nashua of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery , Osage.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua, with a rosary service at 3 p.m. and a scripture service at 7 p.m. There will be further visitation from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Jack A. Angell was born Aug. 2, 1944, in Mason City to Andrew and Viola (Metz) Angell. He graduated from Osage High School in 1962 and Austin Technical College in Austin, Minn.
He married Kathy Rogers on Jan. 31, 1966 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.
He worked at Hydrotile in Nashua from 1971 until its closing in 1991, and most recently worked at Winnebago Industries in Charles City as a welder.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy, of Nashua; two sons, Jeff (Maria) Angell, of Seffner, Fla. and Keith Angell, of Clarion; two daughters, Mrs. Kirk (Brenda) Harris, of Frankfurt, Germany and Mrs. Shawn (Lori) Leeper, of Maitland, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Larry (Andrea) Dammen, of Osage and Mrs. John (Beth) Griffen, of Marshalltown; his father, Andrew Angell, of Osage; six grandchildren, Megan, Kenneth and Ariel Harris, Stephanie and Christopher Angell and Dakota Leeper.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola (Metz) Angell.

ROBERT D. 'BOB' ROPER
Thompson - Robert D. "Bob" Roper, 74, of Thompson, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at his home.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Thompson United Methodist Church, with Pastor Wendy Trone officiating. Private family interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery
in Thompson.

Robert Duane Roper was born June 21, 1925, in Calhoun County, Iowa, to Fred and Edith (Mahe) Roper. He graduated from Lohrville, Iowa, High School in 1942 and attended auto mechanics school in Des Moines before returning home to farm with his father.
On April 27, 1947, he married Eleanor Iverson at Marshalltown. They established their home near Lohrville. In 1953, the Ropers moved to Thompson to run the Oliver Dealership for five years. For many years Bob had farmed east of Thompson in partnership with his son.
Bob enjoyed farming, reading, travel and Oliver Tractors. He was an active member of the Thompson United Methodist Church. He will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor and the love he shared with his family.
Bob passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at his home near Thompson at the age of 74.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor, of Thompson; a son, Andy and his wife, Diane and their children, Megan and Colby, of Leland; a daughter, Adele, of Waterloo; foster daughter, Barbara Emerson and her husband, Stanley and children, Derek and Mindy, of Mason City; and one brother, Louis Roper and his wife, Shirley, of Jefferson.

JENNIE P. BARLAS
MASON CITY - Jennie P. Barlas, 96, of 125 S. Jackson Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W., with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery
in Mason City.
Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. today at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, with a Trisagion service beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa or to Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, in memory of Jennie P. Barlas.
Jennie P. Barlas was born Feb. 13, 1903, in Masklina, Greece, the daughter of Gus and Angeline (Hougiazous) Papageorge. She married George A. Barlas in April of 1928 in Chicago, Ill.
Jennie came to the United States on July 4, 1921, with her sister. She lived in Chicago for seven years until her marriage when she and her husband moved to Mason City.
Jennie enjoyed cooking and sewing, gardening and crocheting and she was an avid reader. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City.
Survivors include two children, Myrna Barlas, and Tom Barlas and his wife, Kathy, both of Mason City; five grandchildren, Johanna and Nico Kotsopoulos, both of St. Paul, Minn., George Barlas, of Mason City, Joanne Landau and her husband, Charles, of Waterloo and Tom Barlas Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Mason City; one great-granddaughter, Chanel Kathryn Barlas, of Mason City; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Blake and Michael Landau, both of Waterloo; three sisters, Panagoula Karadoni, of Tripoli, Greece, Chrisanthe Theophilopoulos, of Athens, Greece and Bessie Zekios, of Tripoli, Greece; a special nephew, Harry Papageorgiou, of Hartford, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews in Greece.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1981; one daughter, Angeline Kotsopoulos and her husband, John; one sister and four brothers.

PAULINE L. MCCOURT
MASON CITY - Pauline L. McCourt, 85, of 806 16th N.E., died Wed. ( Jan. 26, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today using the new east doors of the funeral chapel.
Pauline was born on April 2, 1914, in Mason City, the daughter of John and Hazel (Durtro) Kopecky. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1932 and has remained a Mason City resident her entire lifetime.
On September 26, 1937, she was united in marriage to Keith McCourt and to this union were born two daughters. She remained busy working in retail sales for several businesses which included Kresge's, Moellers, J.C. Penney and Arlan's.
When she was younger she sewed for her children and family as well as other homey items such asembroidery and curtains. She was always willing to help at the Kopecky Cottages in Clear Lake which her parents owned.
She loved to cook, bake and keep a very neat home especially around the holidays and Christmas. She was a very compassionate and loving person and was a natural caregiver. Her number one priority always focused on her family and was devoted to her grandchildren and great grandchildren who adored her.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Altar Guild, United Service Women's Club, and the Rebecca Lodge.
Those thankful in sharing Pauline 's life include her two daughters, Rose Lynn and her husband, Gordon Ogaard, of Mason City and Shelley K. and her husband, Steve Maxcy, of Cabot, Ark.; her seven grandchildren, Karla and her husband, Jeff Rippentrop, of Mason City, Kevin D. Ogaard, of Burlington, Doug and his wife, Pam Ogaard, of Mason City, Courtney and Matt Maxcy, both of Springfield, Mo., and Kylie and Taylor Maxcy, both of Cabot, Ark.; seven great grandchildren, Nicole and Michael Rippentrop, Ashley Graf, Stacie, Kelli, Christy, and Tyler Ogaard; two sisters, Rosalyn and her husband, Donnin Ames, of Fremont, Neb. and Mildred and her husband, Frank Thomsen, of Clear Lake; and two brothers, John and his wife, Evelyn Kopecky, of Sioux City and Cy Kopecky, of Gainsville, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith in 1962; one great grandson, Ryan Ogaard; one sister, Annette
Schmidt
and one brother, Richard Kopecky.
