HENRY ERNEST CROOKS

DOWS - Henry Ernest Crooks, 85, of Dows, died on Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at the USA Healthcare in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. Hernes officiating. Burial will be at the Kensett Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood.

Henry was born to Perry and Alma (Ries) Crooks on Oct. 4, 1914, at Dougherty, Iowa, the second of four children. His father was a farmhand and the family moved nearly every spring, living various places in Mitchell and Cerro Gordo counties.

Henry attended one-room schools through the eighth grade. He left the parental home at the age of 14 and began working as a farmhand. He continued to help support his parents until he married at the age of 23.

Alfrieda Pagel became his bride on May 11, 1938. They were married in the Immanuel Lutheran pastor's parsonage at St. Ansgar.

Henry loved horses and even after automobiles and tractors replaced horses, Henry still managed to have a horse or pony around. The family lived at Otranto, Mitchell and Carpenter, where they lived for seven years in the place they referred to as "The Woods."

They moved to Kensett in 1955, where they lived for 10 years. The family moved to the Nevada area where he was employed as a custodian, first at the Nevada Community Schools and later at Iowa State University.

Henry loved polka music, practical jokes and will be remembered for his sense of humor. He was a loving father who did all he could to provide for his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Wilbur Crooks, Mary Beyer and Otto Crooks; granddaughter, Lisa DiMarco; and son-in-law, James Loftaas.

Henry is survived by his wife, Alfrieda, of Dows; sons, Adrian, of Story City and Randolph and his wife, Kathy, of Ames; daughters, Carolyn Loftaas of Kensett, Glenita Brown and her husband, Stanley, of Rock Falls, Marjorie Tuthill and her husband, Richard, of Kensett, Cynthia Mallette of Boone, Mary Casterton and her husband, Gene, of Mason City, Ramona Parkin and her husband, Gary, of Norwalk, Rosalie Enfield and her husband, Calvin, of Collins; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

DENNIS W. WINTERS

ROCKFORD - Dennis W. Winters, 41, of Rockford, died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, of complications from a heart condition.

Funeral services for Dennis Winters will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W., Rockford, with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p. m. today at the Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main Ave., Rockford, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Dennis W. Winters was born March 13, 1958, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Gerald Dale and Eileen Jeanette (Murphy) Winters. He was raised and attended school in Rockford. Dennis worked in the various fields of automobile mechanics. He had also been a farm hand for Ralph Martin.

Dennis had a deep love and strong affection for cars of all sorts, but most especially his '68 Dodge Coronet, which he affectionately named "Sweet Candy." Dennis also showed his love of cars by being a member of the Winters Drag Racing Team. He was also a gifted freehand artist.

He will be dearly missed by his family who endeared the nicknames of "Stringbean" and "Dennis the Menace," and by his nieces and nephews who called him "Bones."

Those thankful for sharing Dennis' life are his parents, Jerry and Eileen Winters, of Charles City; nine brothers and sisters, Jerry Dale Winters and his wife, Denise, of Parkesburg, Pa., Jim Winters and his wife, Bunnie, of Clear Lake, Dennis' twin brother, David Winters and his wife, Kim, of Charles City, Debbie Schmitt, of Mason City, Don Winters and special friend, Susan Benken, of Mason City, Jeff Winters of Rockford, Phillip Winters of Charles City, Paul Winters and his wife, Dawn, of Brodhead, Wis. and Peggy Feltus and her husband, Dan, of Allison, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and one great-nephew.

ROBERT E. LUTHER

HAMPTON - Robert E. Luther, 68, died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at his home in Hampton.

Private funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 19. Funeral arrangements were provided by Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

DUMONT - Ruth Serilda Harper, 81, died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Dumont Care Center.

JOY DAVIS

CLARION - Joy Davis, 57, formerly of Guthrie Center, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2000) at Richland Center Hospital, Richland Center, Wis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Bowman Chapel in Guthrie Center. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery , Guthrie Center.

Friends may call after noon Friday at Beidelman Funeral Home, Guthrie Center. The family will be present to greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home Friday.

STANLEY A. WITZEL SR.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - Stanley A. Witzel Sr., 95, passed away Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at his residence.

Stanley was born Nov. 18, 1904, in Rudd, to Ed and Bertha (Muller) Witzel. He received his agricultural engineering degree at Iowa State University, Ames, and his masters degree in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Stanley married Adalene Jahns of Spring Valley, Minn., on March 3, 1927. He taught agricultural engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for more than 40 years, specializing in farm structures and soils. During this time, Professor and Adalene Witzel lived in the Cooksville and Madison area.

He lived in Nigeria, Africa, for three years, where he established the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of IFE near Ibadan, Nigeria. Professor Witzel was a recipient of the 1972 Cyrus Hall McCormick Award from the American Society of Agricultural Engineering for achievement in agriculture. Stanley also received the Silver Plate Award. Professor Witzel was very dedicated to his career, devoting much of his time to various committees and honorable causes.

He retired in 1972, moving to Texas and starting a citrus farm. In 1991 he met and married Phoebe Borden and resided in Oceanside, Calif., writing and publishing two books on his full and successful life.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Phoebe (Borden) Witzel, of Oceanside, Calif.; sons, Dr. Stanley Jr. (Betty) Witzel, of North Caldwell, N.J., and Jahn (Janice) Witzel, of Stoughton, Wis.; sisters, Edna, Selma and Iola; grandchildren, Blair (Heidi), Erich (Melissa), David, Christi, Glenn (Sandy) and Laura; and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Andrew, Lily and Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Adalene (Jahns) and Freda (Martin); sons, Wilford and Theodore; and a brother, Homer.

He will be remembered as a very loving man who was devoted to God and supportive to those who were in need.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Stoughton United Methodist Church, 525 Lincoln Ave., Stoughton, Wis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of Wisconsin Foundation, in care of Professor Stanley Witzel Memorial Fund, 1848 University Ave., Madison, WI 53705.

VERNON C. CULBERTSON

LONE ROCK - Vernon C. Culbertson, 60, died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Presbyterian Church, Lone Rock. Burial will be in Burt Township Cemetery , Burt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft.

ALVINA MATSON

RAKE - Alvina Matson, 96, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at the Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, with Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial will be at East Cemetery , Rake.

Visitation will be from 12:30 until the time of the service at church Saturday. Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mabel Alvina Matson, daughter of Alfred and Julia (Quam) Kallestad, was born Dec. 8, 1903, near Frost, Minn.

She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at the Lincoln Church on Feb. 2, 1919, by the Rev. O. M. Veride.

On March 17, 1926, Alvina was married to Nordahl Matson. They farmed around Rake all of their married life. Alvina was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Rake.

Alvina is survived by two daughters, Marian and her husband, Gene Johnson, of Alamo, Texas, and Carolyn and her husband, David Broers, of Rockland, Wis.; one son, Lyle and his wife, Roselyn, of Rake; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, Melvin, Emil, Irvin, Lester and Maynard; one sister, Alice; and one granddaughter, Patricia.

BRAD D. ZUEHL

BRITT - Brad D. Zuehl, 21, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery , Britt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Home, Britt, and will resume one hour prior to services at the church Saturday.

Brad, the son of Doug and Kathy Schleuger Zuehl, was born Dec. 17, 1978, in Britt. Brad grew up in the Britt area and graduated from West Hancock High School in 1997.

While in high school Brad was employed at the Red Rooster Restaurant, Britt. Following graduation, Brad was employed at Kiefer Built in Kanawha and later at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

Brad was a confirmed member of the United Methodist Church, Britt.

He enjoyed fishing, radio-controlled cars, movies, TV and Chevys.

Brad is survived by his parents, Doug and Kathy Zeuhl, of Britt; one brother, Jake Zuehl, of Wesley; his maternal grandparents, Glenn and Jackie Schleuger, of Britt; his paternal grandparents, Denny and June Zuehl, of Britt; his maternal great-grandmother, Marie Schleuger, of Britt; and his paternal great-grandmother, Helena Zuehl, Britt.
