CHARLES J. GORDON

CHARLES CITY - Charles J. "Charlie" Gordon, 74, of 302 16th Ave., died Monday (Jan. 10, 2000) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services on Monday.

BESSIE I. HANSON

EAGLE GROVE - Bessie Irene Hanson, 101, formerly of Eagle Grove, died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge.

Funeral and Eastern Star services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove, with Chaplain William Trembly of Friendship Haven officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday at the funeral home.

SARA M. HELM

MASON CITY - Sara M. Helm, 73, of 337 20th Place S.W., died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Sara M. Helm Memorial Fund.

Sara was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Butler County, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Lydia (Gabelmann) Rath. Sara married Rueben William "Bill" Perau on June 17, 1946, in Rochester, Minn. He died in 1959.

Sara then married Harold "Bud" Helm on Dec. 9, 1961, in Canton, S.D. The Helms lived in Charles City and Mason City before moving to Worthington, Minn., in 1980. They returned to Mason City in 1992.

While living in the North Iowa area, Sara worked for several businesses. She also volunteered at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She enjoyed sewing, cooking and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Harold "Bud" Helm Jr. of Mason City; daughters, Dawn Best and her husband, Larry, of Waterloo, Andrea Mujica and her husband, David, of Mason City, Teresa Helm of Burnsville, Minn., and Lori Benson and her husband, Scott, of Crystal, Minn.; sons, Monte Perau and his wife, Carolyn, of Suffolk, Va., and Randy Perau of Peoria, Ill.; grandchildren, Cory Best and his wife, Sarah Jo, Sara Carter and her husband, John, Quinton, Melanie, Erin and Jeffrey Perau, Emily and Natalie Mujica and Alex Benson; one great-granddaughter, Sydney Carter; a brother, Adolph "Bud" Rath, of Flint, Texas; and two sisters, Hannah Wood of Charles City and Leah Wilson of Waterloo.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Bill; one sister, Martha; and one brother, Fred.

LOIS P. KASTER

VENTURA - Mrs. Lois P. Kaster, 90, of Ventura, died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at the Homestead Assisted Living Residence in Mason City.

Funeral services have been scheduled tentatively for 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Visitation is scheduled tentatively for 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

WILMA OPAL JENSEN

HAMPTON - Wilma Opal Jensen, 95, of Hampton, died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Hampton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wilbert Trushiem officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.

There will be no visitation. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of arrangements.

ETHEL LUCILLE HEMMING

THORNTON - Ethel Lucille Hemming, 90, of Bolivar, Mo., formerly of Thornton, died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Pleasant View Cemetery , Thornton, with the Rev. Franklyn Taylor officiating.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home Chapel, Wheatland, Mo.

HAZEL F. ROSEL

ST. ANSGAR - Hazel F. Rosel, 98, of St. Ansgar, died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Ted Stowers and the Rev. Robert Lemmerman officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

E. CLIFTON GOURLEY

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - E. Clifton "Clif" Gourley, 79, of 150 West Wise Road, Schaumburg, formerly of Mason City, died Jan. 5 (2000).

Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Burial will be in July at Belmond.

Geise Funeral Home, Wood Dale, Ill., was in charge of arrangements.

BELVA LORRAINE BRUNES

CANOGA PARK, Calif. - Belva Lorraine Brunes, 79, of Canoga Park, Calif., formerly of Mason City and Belmond, passed away Jan. 7 (2000) at the Topanga Terrace Convalescent Home in Canoga Park, Calif.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with Pastor Celestyne DeVance officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Amsterdam Cemetery at Goodell.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Belva, the daughter of Herman G. and Anna E. (Rust) Brunes, was born on Oct. 12, 1920, on the family farm northwest of Goodell. She grew up in the Goodell area where she attended country school. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1937. Following graduation from high school, she attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

Belva worked in insurance in the Clear Lake/Mason City area for many years. In 1954, Belva moved to Canoga Park, Calif., where she lived until the time of her death.

She was baptized and confirmed at the United Brethern Church in Goodell.

Belva is survived by one sister, Ethel Brunes, of Belmond; one brother, Stanton Brunes and his wife, Helen, of Goodell; three nephews, Steven Brunes and his wife, Luann, of Belmond, Don Brunes and his wife, Christine, of Groton, S.D., and Kevin Brunes and his wife, Suzan, of Klemme; and five great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Annalee, who died in 1990.

ALMA E. SPARGUR

FALLS CITY, Neb. - Alma E. Spargur, 84, of 518 W. 18th St., died Friday night, Jan. 7 (2000), at the Community Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 8, 1915, at Mason City, the daughter of Sigurd Johnson and Hattie (Breitweiser) Johnson. She was raised in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1933.

She was married to Hearld Spargur on Jan. 30, 1938, in Mason City. He passed away Nov. 30, 1989.

Mrs. Spargur worked for F.W. Woolworth Co. in Mason City before her marriage. They established their home in Mason City when married and moved to Falls City in 1944. She worked for Earl May, JC Penney and Ashley's Discount Store, all of Falls City.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and the B.P.O. Does Drove No. 56.

Mrs. Spargur is survived by two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Dan) Fernbacher of Springboro, Ohio, and Carol (Mrs. Robert) Bailey of Louisburg, Kan.; a sister, Jeanette Anderson, of Mason City, and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the Door Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Weinert officiating. Burial was in Steele Cemetery.

Doug Bailey and Derek Bailey, both of Louisburg, Kan., Travis Bailey, of Kansas City, Mo., and Todd Harmon, Troy Harmon and Melvin Harmon, all of Falls City, served as pallbearers.
