Edith Pauline Hols, 94, of Duluth, died suddenly on Jan. 16 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Farmington, Iowa, to Harry R. and Capitola (Blackmer) Jones. She married John A. Hols on June 4, 1932 in Fort Madison, Iowa.

She resided in Burlington, Iowa, from 1942 to 1969 and was a member of the First Congregational Church. She earned a B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant, Iowa in 1964, an M.A. from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., in 1965, and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1970. Edith taught linguistics at the University of Minnesota Duluth from 1970 until her retirement in 1982. She coordinated development of the UMD linguistics program and English as a Second Language program, and in 1975 was instrumental in founding the Lake Superior English Language Institute to help foreign students develop English language skills. She was active in civic affairs for many years and participated in a book group of UMD retirees. She was much loved and admired by her extensive family. She loved literature, music, especially opera, and foreign travel. In May 1996 she was recognized by Minnesota Governor, Arnie Carlson, as an Outstanding Minnesota Woman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1966; a son, John A. Hols of Spokane, Wash., in 2006; and a sister, Nellie Naefie of Burlington and Iowa City, Ia.

She is survived by her son, David R. (Marge) Hols of St. Paul; daughter-in-law Norma Hols of Spokane; four grandchildren, Laura J. (A. Carson) Toepfer of Spokane, Eric D. Hols of Ashburn, Va., (Greta Hols of Woodbridge, Va.,) Brian R. Hols (Susan) of Minneapolis and Jennifer A. Hols of St. Paul; six great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several grand nieces and grand nephew.

Louis Hawes
October 26, 1934 - October 25, 2005

Louis Clyde Hawes, 70, of Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis since November of 2004 and formerly of Burlington, died at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born October 26, 1934, in Indianola, he was the son of Loren Eldred and Dorothy Lorraine Sandy Hawes. On October 21, 1962 he married Carolyn Neiswanger in Keokuk.

Mr. Hawes worked as a pipe fitter for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad Shops in West Burlington for 18 years retiring in 2000.

He was a 1953 graduate of Keokuk High School and received his bachelor’s degree from northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College in Kirksville, Missouri. He was a Korean War Army veteran. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active in church activities. He was a member of Keokuk Masonic Lodge No. 29 AF&AM in Keokuk and was an outstanding tennis player, avid Hawkeyes fan, Civil War buff and enjoyed his family.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Hawes of Burlington; one son, Andrew Hawes of Burlington; two daughters, Jennifer Hawes and Sarah Hawes both of Burlington; two grandsons, Trenton Hawes and Rory Hawes; and one sister, Lorna (George) Sparrow of Hamilton, Illinois.

A memorial has been established.

Belva "Hannah" Hugg
February 16, 1934 - November 4, 2006

-Family Visitation: Tuesday, November 7th, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in Lunning

-Funeral Service: Tuesday, November 7th, 7:00 PM in Lunning Chapel.

Friends may congregate for a time of fellowship at 815 Sycamore St. in Burlington after
the service.

-According to her wishes, the body of Mrs. Hugg has been cremated.

Belva “Hannah” Hugg, 72, of Burlington, Iowa died at 9:45 PM Saturday, November 4, 2006 at the home of her son.

Born February 16, 1934 in Ottumwa, Iowa, she was the daughter of Bert and Belva Conkle Franklin. On May 21, 1976 she married Robert Hugg at Monmouth, Illinois. He died November 27, 1996. She was previously married to Mylo J. Huffman on January 29, 1955.

Mrs. Hugg was a 1953 graduate of Bonaparte High School and worked for Wal-Mart as a sales clerk for seven years until she be came ill. She previously worked for IAAP, sold Avon and owned and operated Belva’s Crafts.

She was a member of Burlington Gymnastics Society where she was an officer. She enjoyed going to the Boat, crafting, flea markets, playing cards and doing things with family and friends. She loved to work at Wal-Mart.

Survivors include two sons, Davy (Nadine) Huffman of Burlington and Jim (Tyanne) Huffman of Springfield, Illinois; four grandchildren, Davy Milo Huffman and Aubree, Alyssa and Andrew Huffman; two step grandchildren, Andy (Andrea) Malcom and Thomas (Holly) Malcom; and 2 step great grandchildren, Rady and Zachary Malcom; one brother Jimmy L. Franklin of Birmingham, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.

Her husbands, parents, one sister Fern Heady and one nephew Denny Heady preceded her in death.

Evelyn M. Hulett

October 27, 1925 - September 13, 2006

Evelyn Marceline Hulett, 80, of Danville, Iowa died at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born October 27, 1925 at Kingston, Iowa, she was the daughter of Henry and Helena Moser Dravis. On May 24, 1943 she married Floyd Edward Hulett, Sr. in Burlington, Iowa. He died October 1, 1992.

Mrs. Hulett worked in production at Sylvania, Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, Lehigh Leopolds and also was the bookkeeper for her husband’s welding shop. She enjoyed gardening and bowling.

Survivors include two sons, Floyd Hulett, Jr. of Danville and Marvin (Sheila) Hulett of West Burlington, Iowa; one daughter, Connie Hulett of Davenport, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Sean and Floyd Hulett III and Wendy Dodd; Jessy Hullett, Renee Woodall and Shawna Saad, Todd Cross and Christy Allred; and Michelle Leopard and Todd Evans; 17 great grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Nader of Sacremento, California; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, parents, two brothers and five sisters preceded her in death.

Dorothy M. Hult
April 15, 1915 - August 24, 1906

Baptist Church.
-Funeral Service: Saturday, August 26th, 2:00 PM in Oak Street Baptist Church.

Dorothy M. Hult, 91, of Burlington died at 9 AM Thursday, August 24, 2006 at GRMC.

Born April 15, 1915, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Fred and Louise Holze Bohlken. She married John W. Hult on November 25, 1942. He died June 6, 1950.

She was a home economics teacher at Burlington High School having also taught at high schools in Williamsburg, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois. She was a member of the Burlington League of Women Voters, the Burlington Inter-Faith Council, the National Education Association, and of Kappa Delta Pi National Education Honor Society.

She was a 1936 graduate of Iowa State University where she was president of the I.S.U. chapter of Theta Epsilon National Baptist College Women’s Sorority.

She was a life-long member of Oak Street Baptist Church and a member of the Ruth Circle of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship. For 20 years as Wedding Reception Committee Chair, she helped over 100 brides plan their wedding day receptions at the church. She served in her church as a deaconess for many years. She also served on the Evangelism and Music Boards, the Advisory Council, and was Chair of the Board of Christian Education. For many years she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Oak Street Baptist Church.

Besides her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Krekel in 1995 and sisters Eunice Miller in 1985, Evelyn Bohlken in 2000, and Ruth Schaefer in 2003. Her brother, Fred Bohlken, of Scottsdale, Arizona, died in 2005.

Surviving are her son, Michael J. Hult, and one sister, Virginia Otto, both of Burlington and four grandchildren: Melissa and Jonathan Hult and Andrea and Elizabeth Krekel.

Kimberly Ann Huppenbauer
February 12, 1981 - October 31, 2005

Kimberly Ann Huppenbauer, 24, of Burlington died at 7:01 p.m. on Monday, October 31, 2005, at Great River Medical Center.

Born February 12, 1981 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Michael and Kathy Thomason Huppenbauer.

Ms. Huppenbauer was a 1999 graduate of Burlington High School and was a certified nurses assistant. She worked as a server at Gator’s and was formerly employed at Great River Medical Center and Nursing Homes as a C.N.A.

She enjoyed music, movies, camping, the river and drives in the country.

Survivors include her father and stepmother, Micheal and Linda Huppenbauer of Burlington; mother and stepfather, Kathy and Eric Thomas of Smithshire, Illinois; her boyfriend, Aaron Stevens of Burlington; three sisters, Summer Marnin of Altoona, and Tiffany Huppenbauer and Amber Huppenbauer both of Burlington; maternal grandfather, A.J. Thomason of Carthage, Illinois; step maternal grandfather, George Vaughn of Wapello; uncle and aunt; Wayne and Madeleine Scott of Stockton, Missouri; step grandparents, Virgil and Phyllis Scott of Burlington; two nieces, Liana and Oralia; one nephew, Drake; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Her maternal grandmother, Bonnie (Me Me) Vaughn; paternal grandparents, Clifford and Irma L. Huppenbauer; and cousin, Terry Scott preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established.

Charles "Charlie" Sylvester Hymes Jr.
June 30, 1946 - November 5, 2006

-Friends May Call: Thursday, November 9th, from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM
-Family Visitation: Thursday, November 9th, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM
-Funeral Service: There will be no funeral service
-Inurnment: At a later date in Oakland Cemetery , Fort Madison, Iowa
-According to his wishes, the body of Mr. Hymes will be cremated following the

visitation

Charles “Charlie” Sylvester Hymes Jr. 60, of West Burlington, Iowa died Sunday, November 5, 2006 at his home after a short battle with lung cancer.

Born June 30, 1946 in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was the son of Charles and Cecilia Sherwood Hymes Sr. On October 31, 1969 he married Monica Warhank. They later divorced.

Mr. Hymes worked for the City of Burlington Street Department. He had a love of country music, trains and fishing.

Survivors include three brothers, LeeRoy (Pat) Hymes of Farmington, Iowa, Warren (Teresa) of Salem, Iowa and Howard Hymes of Denmark, Iowa; five sisters, Marcie (Ray) Duvall of Orange City, Florida, Gwen (George) New of Leesburg, Florida, Joan (Richard) Nelson of Fort Madison, Iowa, Charlotte (Doug) Sanders of Richards, Texas, and Dianna (Fred) Mincks of Fort Madison; several nieces and nephews.

His parents, two sisters, one brother, two nieces, two nephews, and one great nephew preceded him in death.
