Richard L. “Dick” Edwards, age 88 of Marengo, went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2014. He died at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 27, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo, with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, May 26, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Dick is survived by his wife Wanda; four nephews, Philip Sencer of Chicago, George Edwards of Minneapolis, Gary Edwards of Marengo, and Larry Edwards of Panama City, FL; and nieces, Linda Edwards of Coralville, Jeanne Jurgens of Davenport, and Carol Graham of Davenport; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Reinhardt and wife Nadine of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and their children, Susan, Eric, Lisa and Kurt.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, a sister in infancy, two brothers, George and Roy, and three sisters-in-law, Aileen and Vera Edwards, and Norma Sencer.
Richard L. Edwards was born April 27, 1926 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of James Blaine Edwards and H. Ruth Merritt Edwards. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1944 and attended Iowa State University in Ames. Dick proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 3 years, stationed in Farragut, ID. He married Wanda Ardis Reinhardt on November 10, 1953 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grant Center. Dick farmed, and was an insurance agent with Lenox Mutual Insurance Association for 35 years, retiring in 1998. He also served as secretary of that association for 27 years. Dick was a member of the Marengo American Legion Post 76. He belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, where he served as an elder for many years, and was a member of the Men’s Fellowship. Dick loved his farming, and just enjoyed being outdoors.
While in the Navy, Dick served aboard the USS Cabot, in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. The “A” Division held yearly reunions for 21 years. The Edwards’ hosted reunions in Cedar Rapids, in Mount Horeb, WI, and co-hosted with Ray and Neva Feather in Colorado Springs. Dick always enjoyed these events and looked forward to greeting his friends every year.

Lucille I. Langlas, age 93, of Williamsburg, Iowa, died Friday, May 16, 2014 at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg. Memorial Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, May 22, 2014, First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg, with Rev. Gary VanHuekelom officiating. Inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Williamsburg. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 P.M. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg. Memorials may be contributed to Highland Ridge/Willow Creek Unit or First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.
Lucille is survived by her daughters, Dian Boysen and husband Carlos of Hiawatha, and Sandra Reed of North Liberty; grandchildren Tyler Wright (Anne) of Kansas City, MO, Adam Reed of Phoenix, AZ, Colin Wright (fiancee Aimee) of North Liberty, and Logan Reed of Denver, CO; a great-grandchild to be born in the autumn of 2014; a brother George Mittelbach of Amana and a sister-in-law, Donna McGurk of Cedar Rapids, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don in 2012, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Dawn.
Lucille Irene Mittelbach was born May 21, 1920 in West Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Philipp Anton and Clara Leichsenring Mittelbach. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1938 and married Donald C. Langlas on June 12, 1943 in South Amana. Lucille was employed over the years with the telephone office in Marengo, the State Tax Office in Des Moines, and ACT in Iowa City. She enjoyed quilting and embroidering, bowling, reading, baking and her flower garden and plants. She especially enjoyed spoiling her four grandsons.
Lucille was the best wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was her own worst critic, always saying she should have done it better. She was generous, and giving, and will be deservingly rewarded in heaven.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff of Highland Ridge, and especially the staff of Willow Creek.

Henry Jacob Ruff, age 92 of Middle Amana, died May 10, 2014 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Celebration of Life services will be Saturday May 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Kristie Yoder officiating. Burial will be in the South Amana Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Friday May 16 from 4-7 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be given to the Amana Church Society, Camp Courageous, Salvation Army or worthwhile cause. Arrangements are with Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo.
Henry was born March 1, 1922 in South Amana, Iowa the son of Ferdinand J. and Henrietta M. Siegel Ruff. He attended the Amana Schools, graduating in 1940. Henry attended the University of Iowa where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1943 and Doctor of Dentistry in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving 20 years as a dentist and retired as the rank of Commander. He received several medals and honors. Henry traveled extensively while serving in the Navy. After retirement from the service Henry returned to South Amana and opened a dental practice which he continued for 18 years.
He married Eva Marie Swann in 1945 and she died in 1948. In 1954 he married Ingeborg Jakob-Koehler and to Henry and Inge were born daughter Heidi Karen and son Eric Karl. Inge died in 1982. Henry married Emaline Louise Dietrich Bryson in November 1983 and she died January 2012.
In 1993 Henry and Emaline built their dream home where he claimed he had ‘everything’ he needed. Henry practiced ‘fitness’ with daily exercise and swimming until January 2014. He was very generous with his time and money supporting many causes in which he believed.
Henry was a member of the Amana Heritage Society and translated many historical letters and documents from the Old German Script to English. He was also a member of the Amana Arts Guild, the Marengo American Legion Post #76, and was an Elder of the Amana Church Society.
His love of friends and music were very important. He and wife Inge were instrumental in originating the Amana Oktoberfest. Being with friends, singing German songs, telling stories of his interesting life and enjoying an occasional Happy Hour gave him great satisfaction.
Henry is survived by his son Eric (Sherry) Ruff, Redding CA; five step-children Deborah Vande Voort (John) of Shawnee, KS, Dianne Schlesselman (Robert) of Williamsburg, Douglas Bryson (Angelika) of Middle Amana, Jamie Bryson (Susie) of Middle Amana and Ida Bryson of Iowa City; grandson Austin Ruff, Redding CA: eight step-grandchildren James Schlesselman (Stefani), Erica Rasti (Jeremy), Erin Nichols (Austin), Carissa Bryson, Reese Bryson, Renata Bryson, Gina Bryson, Levi Bryson and son David Alan; and two other step-great-grandchildren Isabella Schlesselman and Samantha Schlesselman.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wives, daughter Heidi in 1983, and step-mother Henrietta Johanna Moershel Ruff in 2009.
The family extends appreciation to the staffs of Colonial Manor of Amana and Essence of Life Hospice for the loving care they provided.

Neoma Pearl Lacy, age 90, of Vinton, Iowa, formerly of Williamsburg, died Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Vinton Lutheran Home in Vinton, Iowa. Graveside Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the North English Cemetery, North English, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to the Vinton Lutheran Home in her memory. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.
Neoma is survived by her daughters, Jeannene Ann Lacy of Hiawatha and Patricia Ann Lacy of Vinton; six grandchildren, Christene Dietz (Jerry) of Cedar Rapids, Amy Jo Stephenson (Kris), Caitlin Loney, Destiny Loney, Breanna Loney and Austin Douglas, all of Vinton; and her sister Marie Faas (Mel) of Lincoln, NE. Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Larry Lacy (Nancy) and a sister-in-law, Mildred Lacy, all of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd in 2009, and three sisters Nadine Gardner, Elma Smith, and Ethel Jennings.
Neoma was born December 2, 1923 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Lonzo Augustus Rogers and Ada Jane Shelton Rogers. She attended the Gehry School in English Township, and married Lloyd Melvin Lacy on December 13, 1941 at the Ohio Methodist Parsonage in rural Ladora, Iowa. Besides being a homemaker, wife, and mother, Neoma worked for Nash Finch in Cedar Rapids for eleven years, and as an office clerk at Kinze Manufacturing, rural Williamsburg for 20 years, retiring in 2002. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, puzzles and flea markets. She especially loved her family and will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Elsie Eva Foerstner, 97, was a woman ahead of her times. She helped trailblaze a high school education for students in the Amana Colonies in Iowa in 1931. Not many teens had access to high school prior to that in the colonies, the religious community where Elsie was born on March 28, 1917 to Carl and Wilhelmine Heistermann Foerstner. She dreamed of going to college and a state legislator, impressed by this young girl’s ability to quote one of his speeches verbatim, found her a job in state government in Des Moines. She saved almost every dime to go to the University of Iowa.
She majored in business, graduated in 1941 and moved to Chicago, building a career at Kraft Foods. She came to town just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor brought America into World War II and she volunteered with service organization such as the USO as newly enlisted troops poured through the city. She returned home frequently to Iowa to visit family and cheer on the Hawkeyes for home games. A world traveler, she explored Europe, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Israel and many other spots. She served as the president of the University of Iowa Alumni Association Chicago and as the chaplain of her Chicago P.E.O. chapter.
She loved to harmonize songs and recite poems with her oldest brother William, who lived in Chicago. And she enjoyed talking politics and business with her older brother Harold, an engineer in Yuma, Arizona. Nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren adored visits with Aunt Elsie. She died on April 30 under Hospice care in her Chicago apartment. She was preceded in death by her two brothers. She is survived and celebrated by her nieces and nephews Carl Foerstner, Abigail Foerstner (Arthur Caudy), June Foerstner Lee (Ken), Clarke Foerstner, Jim Foerstner (Debbie), Lee Wayne Foerstner (Sylvia) and Rick Foerstner; by 19 grandnieces and nephews; and by 27 great grandnieces and nephews.
Visitation: 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014, Middle Amana Church, Middle Amana Iowa. Services at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2014, Middle Amana Church. Burial will be in the South Amana Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial gifts to the University of Iowa Foundation (https:/w/www.uifoundation.org) or the Amana Heritage Society, P.O. Box 81, Amana, IA 52203. Bessie Burke, age 91, of Marengo, Iowa, died Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Highland Ridge Care Center, in Williamsburg, Iowa. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Victor. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, or St. John’s Lutheran Church, Victor. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by three sons, Lewis and wife Joyce of Marengo, Douglas and wife Marla of Clive, Bruce and wife Kathy of Amana; a daughter Marcia Burke of Williamsburg; six grandchildren, Matthew Thompson of Clive, James Thompson of Ames, Nathan Burke of Des Moines, Sunny Burke of Ames, Shelly Koehn (Joseph) of Millersburg, and Shayna Janda (Nicholas) of Cedar Rapids; and four great-grandchildren, Cameron Thompson, Evan and Abby Koehn, and James Janda. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Eleanor Woodson and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roland William Burke in 1999, five brothers, Ora, Leon, Homer and Ronald Woodson, and Willard in infancy, and a sister Lois Clymer.
Bessie Frances Woodson was born February 22, 1923 in rural Shellsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Ira and Lucy Alden Woodson. She graduated from Shellsburg High School with the Class of 1941. She was employed at Collins Radio from 1942-47, helping make the radios used in World War II. Bessie married Roland William Burke on June 15, 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. She worked with her husband on the farm in rural Guernsey for many years. Following their retirement, the couple relocated to Marengo.
Bessie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was very active in her church, whether it was St. John’s Lutheran in rural Victor or later at St. John’s in Marengo. She was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and Ladies Aid member. Music had always been an important part of Bessie’s life. She sang for many weddings and funerals. She delivered sermon tapes for many years to fellow members who could no longer attend the church services. She enjoyed reading, needlework projects, and creating many special pieces. She liked playing cards with family and friends, working jigsaw puzzles, and especially playing dominoes with her grandchildren. After her eyesight failed, Bessie listened to the Bible and other reading material with audio tapes. Her Lord, family and music were her cherished joys in life.

Walter E. Waterbeck, age 94 of Coggon, Iowa, formerly of Brooklyn, died Sunday, April 20, 2014 at his home in Coggon. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 24, 2014, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn, with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Walter is survived by five sons, Allen and wife Audrey of Chelsea, Marvin of Brooklyn, Bernie and wife Betty of Garwin, Roger and wife Wendy of Chelsea, and Ken of Alburnett; and two daughters, Barbara Hall of Brooklyn and Karen Dahlstrom and husband Roger of Ankeny; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a special daughter-in-law, Marilyn Waterbeck of Central City, and a sister-in-law Isabel Waterbeck of Grinnell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Julia Vavroch Waterbeck, his second wife Rena Krug Waterbeck, a son Robert in infancy, a granddaughter Jennifer, two brothers, John and Leonard Waterbeck, two sisters, Elsie Vajgrt and Frances Snyder, and a daughter-in-law Dora.
Walter Everett Waterbeck was born August 1, 1919 on the family farm in rural Brooklyn, Iowa, the son of Frank and Maggie Eirp Waterbeck.
He graduated from Hartwick Consolidated High School in 1936 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He returned to Iowa and farmed for many years. He also sold oil for Archer Oil. Walter married Julia Helen Vavroch on July 11, 1945 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tama. She passed away March 11, 2004. He later married Rena Krug in 2005. She passed away in 2007.
Walt enjoyed fishing, and being on the farm. Polka music was his favorite type of music. He liked cooking in the kitchen with Julia, and also spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Later in life he enjoyed going to Milestones in Marion. For the last 6 years, Walt had resided in Coggon with his granddaughter and her family, Patti and Randy LeGrand.

Wanda A. Huedepohl, age 101, of Williamsburg, died Friday, April 18, 2014 at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 22, 2014, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, with Rev. Carl Cloeter officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, April 21, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Fellowship Hall, Williamsburg. Memorials may be contributed to St. Paul Lutheran cemetery or Sunday school, or St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Homestead. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Wanda is survived by her sons, Willard of Williamsburg and his special friend Karen Hopp of Iowa City, and Merlyn and wife Diane, of Williamsburg; two grandsons, Michael Huedepohl and wife Jennifer, of Williamsburg and Timothy Huedepohl and his special friend Sherry Grier, of Williamsburg; and two great-grandchildren, Anton and Thomas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Anton on May 9, 1988, and siblings, Ervin, Arnold, Milton, Millen, and Orville Schmidt, Alma Stohlmann and Norma Webert.
Wanda Anna Schmidt was born April 24, 1912 in York Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Carolina Sandersfeld Schmidt. She received her education at Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School, rural Williamsburg. Wanda married Anton Huedepohl on January 29, 1939 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple farmed for many years. They moved into Williamsburg in August of 1967. Wanda enjoyed gardening and yard work, quilting and sewing. She especially enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family and friends. Wanda was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg.
