Nellie M. Patterson, age 90, died Sunday September 30, 2007 at Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday October 3, 2007, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with Pastor Tom Walsh officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her five children Bonnie Voss, Jerry M. Patterson (Kathy), Robert Patterson, Linda May Patterson (Brian), and Sharon Patterson; seven grandchildren Vanessa McGivern (Jack), Anthony Voss, Susette Eckhardt, Allison Hall, Abby Hall, Justin Patterson, and Casey Patterson. five great-grandchildren, Megan, Tristen, John, Jasmine, and Kyia; two great-great-grandchildren, Delainey and Chayse. In addition she is survived by two sisters and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin, her parents, two brothers, three sisters and a son-in-law.
Nellie was born March 16, 1917 in Barnette, Missouri, the daughter of William and Dolly. She received her education in Iowa County. Nellie was united in marriage to Edwin M. Patterson on October 16, 1934 in Kahoka, Missouri. For ten years she cooked at the Bynumville Missouri Schools. She worked at the Marengo Memorial Hospital until retirement. Nellie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, gardening, and loved flowers. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.
Emily C. Roemig, age 97, of Amana and Lakeview Village at Middle Amana, died Thursday, August 16, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 18, 2007, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Kristie Yoder officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, August 17, 2007 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or the Amana Heritage Society. Arrangements are with Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
She is survived by two sons, James and wife Terry, and Dennis and wife Kathleen, all of Amana; two grandchildren, Sarah Roemig and husband Scott of Excelsior, MN, and Rebecca Selzer and husband Neil of Verona, WS; and four great-grandchildren, Simon and Grace Roemig and Gabriel and Aidan Selzer. In addition she is survived by a step daughter-in-law, Madeline Roemig Bendorf of Iowa City, three step granddaughters, Carol Heusinkveld and husband David of Amana, Susan Goree and husband John of Iowa City and Elizabeth Cooper and husband George of Charlston, SC; four step-great-grandchildren, Forrest Heusinkveld, Kathrine and Martin Goree, and James Cooper; two sisters, Emma Albert and Elsie Mattes, both of Amana, as well as many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jacob, a stepson Martin Roemig, and a step great-grandson Jordan Heusinkveld.
Emily Caroline Oesterle was born March 29, 1910 in Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Elsie Clemens Oesterle. She attended school in Amana and later the Cedar Rapids Business College. She married Jacob Roemig at the Little Brown Church in Nashua in 1943. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper and secretary for the Amana Society. Later she worked with her husband in the family business, the Colony Inn Restaurant, doing similar work. For many years she also did bookkeeping for her son and his wife at their businesses.
Emily loved to travel. She and her family took many long summer trips when her children were in school and in all covered 46 of the 50 United States, and Canada. In later years she took numerous car trips with her friends around the Midwest. She also traveled outside the U.S. Her favorite pastime was working in her yard and vegetable garden. The fall was a special time of year as it involved raking and burning of leaves. Her entire family will long stay cozy and warm using the afghans that she crocheted. Spending time with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren was a source of great joy.
She was a member of the Amana Church Society, the Amana Heritage Society and for many years was a member of the Eastern Star.
Donald L. Roggentine, age 82, died Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at his home following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 5, 2007, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Jackie Tjarks officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Conroy with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his children, Dixie Kenyon (Don) of Mena, AK, Penny Stephan of Marengo, Roger Roggentine of Middle Amana, Donna Murley (Lon) of South Amana, Cindy Murley (Collin) of Marengo and Kelcy Jasper (Laverne) of East Amana; fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Alice in 1993, his parents, and a son Russell “Rusty” in 1970.
Donald Leo Roggentine was born in 1925 in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the only child of Calvin “Kelly” Roggentine and Freeda E. Jacobs Roggentine. He received his early education in the Marengo schools and attended high school in Oakland, CA. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and Middle East Campaign medal. He married Alice Iona Misel on August 1, 1946 in Cedar Rapids. The couple farmed in Iowa County for many years and Donald was the owner and operator of the Old Style Tavern in Marengo from 1955 to 1971. He was a lifetime member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76, the Williamsburg VFW Post #8797, Williamsburg D.A.V., and was a member of First Lutheran Church, rural Conroy. He enjoyed carpentry work and playing Bingo.
Kenneth W. Strasser, age 62, died Monday, December 10, 2007 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City following an extended illness. The family will greet friends from 12 to 3 P.M. Sunday, December 16, 2007 at the Marengo American Legion Hall. Military Honors will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. at the hall followed by a luncheon. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his daughter, Erica Strasser and fiancé Brian VanThournout of Newhall; his son, Brandon and wife Rachelle of Williamsburg, three grandchildren, Tyrany Strasser, Baily Sonka and Lexie Sonka; and two brothers, Ron and wife Rose of Marengo and Jim and wife Judy of Morning Sun, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son Shon who died in 1999.
Kenneth William Strasser was born June 28, 1945 in Harper, Iowa the son of Morris and Helen Bohrn Strasser. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1964 and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Kenny was employed at Amana Refrigeration for 28 years.
Miss Ruth Eleanor Uhlmann, age 60 of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, formerly of Williamsburg, died Wednesday, September 12, 2007 in McClellanville, SC following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 15, 2007, All Saints Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Williamsburg, IA with Rev. Carl Cloeter officiating. Ruth Eleanor Uhlmann was born May 23, 1947 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Edgar Paul Uhlmann and Johanna Louise Maas Uhlmann. She was baptized June 15, 1947 by Rev. Enno Schulke in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, IA and confirmed March 26, 1961 with her confirmation verse Isaiah 54:10. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1965 and Drake University. She was Vice President of Operations with Northfield Trading Company and a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Surviving are her sister, Rachel Ehrman and husband Russell of South Amana, IA, two brothers, Robert E. Uhlmann and wife Carol and Richard R. Uhlmann and wife Sonya, all of Williamsburg, IA; three nieces Dawn Ealy and husband Jeff, Molly Kephart and husband Rob, and Erin Schaefer and husband Joel; nephews, Brian Uhlmann, Steve Uhlmann, Jason Uhlmann, Dustin Ehrman, Brandt Uhlmann, and Evan Uhlmann and wife Brooke; great nieces, Wilhelmine Kephart, Aliese Schaefer, and Heidi Schaefer; great nephews, Jonathan Ealy, Blake Ealy, Edgar Kephart, and Jack Schaefer, and devoted friends, Bill and Eileen Wallace.
Becky Ann Van Dee, age 43, of Williamsburg, died Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at her home following a sudden illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 7, 2007, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, September 6, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by two daughters, Nicole Van Dee and Whitney Van Dee, both of Iowa City; a son Chase Van Dee at home; her parents, David and Cheryl George of Marengo; a brother Jeff George of Marengo; and her companion Brian Klein of Victor. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Virgil and Fleeta Oswalt and paternal grandparents, Robert and Genevieve George.
Becky Ann George was born July 24, 1964 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of David and Cheryl Oswalt George. She graduated from Iowa Valley High School in 1982. Becky married Dennis Michael Van Dee on September 5, 1987. The couple later divorced. Becky was employed for over 20 years as an assembler at Amana Refrigeration. She was an animal lover and enjoyed the outdoors. Fishing, camping, and gardening were her pastimes, but her children were the most important part of Becky’s life.
Ernest J. Heller, age 92 of Ladora, died Monday, January 28, 2008 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, January 31, 2008, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Dr. W.L. Karsten officiating. Burial will be in the Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his brothers, Elvin Heller and wife Nancy of Solway, MN, Wes and wife Mary of Marengo, IA, George and wife Vava of Marengo, IA and Frank and wife Zelma of Lostine, OR; and many nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Alice Morton and Mary Heller and a brother, Lloyd Heller, Jr.
Ernest John Heller was born July 16, 1915 in rural Ladora, Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Emma Dusil Heller. He attended the Honey Creek School, rural Iowa County. Ernest served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in China and India.
Ernest opened the Koszta Store for many years and also farmed. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and mushroom hunting. He was a fantastic cook, made wine, and enjoyed the family get-togethers.
Ruth Von Lienen, age 88 of Marengo died Wednesday morning, February 6, 2008 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 9, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Conroy, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, February 8, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the American Heart Association, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo or Amenity Hospice.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald Von Lienen and wife Karen of Marengo, and Wayne Lienen and wife Kathy of Marengo; two daughters, Ferne Fields and husband Harlan of Conroy and Sharon Gunderson of St. Martin, MN; thirteen grandchildren, 30 great- grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren, and a sister, Blanche Powell of Marengo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Von Lienen, three brothers, Raymond, Milford and Wilford Schwarting; a son Donald and a grandson Scott.
Ruth Wilhelmina Mathilda Schwarting was born September 16, 1919 in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Adolph and Mathilda Hopp Schwarting. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School in York Township and married William Von Lienen on September 9, 1938 in Davenport, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Williamsburg and Conroy area. Besides being a homemaker and mother, Ruth worked at the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana and later at the Farmers Co-op in Conroy. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy for many years. Ruth moved to Marengo in 1997 following her husband’s death and joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo.
Ruth Amy Dittert, age 80 of Hiawatha, formerly of Amana, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at the Mercy Hospice House in Hiawatha, following an extended illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 17, 2008 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 50 Edgewood Rd. NW, Cedar Rapids with Fr. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fairfax. Friends may call from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A Rosary will be recited at 8:00 A.M. on Monday at St. Jude’s Parish Center with visitation following until service time. Memorials may be contributed to Hospice of Mercy, Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her children, Diane Smith and husband Marvin of Cedar Rapids, Patrick Dittert and wife Nancy of Perry, Iowa, and Mary Ellen Brickley of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Everett Wetterling, Bill Wetterling, Florence Teller, Eunice Krauss, Ray Wetterling, Lorraine Hodawanus, and Winnie Parson, and a daughter-in-law Linda DeSotel of Fairfax. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Francis Dittert in 2002, a son John in 1981, a daughter Elizabeth in infancy, a brother, and 2 sisters.
Ruth Amy Wetterling was born January 29, 1928 in Ladysmith, WI, the daughter of Emil B. and Grace J. Angel Wetterling. She married Francis “Doc” Dittert on February 24, 1948. The couple moved to the Amanas in 1950. After lovingly raising her family Ruth finished her own education through Kirkwood Community College. Ruth worked as a nurses’ aide for several years. She also worked at the Amana Woolen Mills and the Village Winery in Amana.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfax and the VFW Auxiliary.
