Harland "Hap" Frederick Kutzbach, 80, of Farmersburg passed away Sunday, September 24, 2006, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
"Hap" was born
on May 31, 1926, to Henry and Elsie (Schlitter) Kutzbach at the family homestead near Farmersburg. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, in Farmersburg and remained a faithful and active member his entire life. He served on the church council as a funeral usher and a key holder for many years. He attended Farmersburg Community School. He was united in marriage to Shirley Moon on June 4, 1946. Three children were born
to them, Karen (Wayne) Miene, Monona, Keith (Dixie) Kutzbach, Farmersburg and Kathy (Jim Wagner) Kutzbach, Farmersburg.
Hap farmed the family homestead for twenty five years, drove an LP gas route for Clayton County Farm Service and Elkader Co-Op for twenty five years, was grounds keeper and "special needs" bus driver for MFL-MarMac School for ten years.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Shirley; three children, Karen (Wayne) Miene, Monona, Keith (Dixie) Kutzbach, Farmersburg, Kathy (Jim Wagner) Kutzbach, Farmersburg; his beloved grandchildren, Tom (Jacque) Miene, Wilton, Trent (Melissa) Miene, Farmersburg, Trace (Sherri) Miene, Monona, Stacie (Christopher) Bauerle, Murfreesboro, TN, Dr. Beth Kutzbach, St. Paul, MN, Jill (Dr. Julian) Sanchez, Bettendorf; he was also delighted to know eight great-grandchildren, Steph Miene, Cedar Falls, Ashley Miene, Wilton, Autumn, Elizabeth and Esben Miene, Farmersburg, Kale and Landyn Miene, Monona and Joshua Bauerle, Murfreesboro, TN; one sister, Lavon Kregel, Postville; two brothers-in-law, Dwayne (Inez) Moon, Luana, Vernice (Bev) Moon, Monona; one sister-in-law, Darlene Moon, Monona, and many relatives and friends.
Hap was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Ernie and Bertha Moon; two brothers-in-law, Gordon Kregel and Don Moon; two sisters-in-law, Viola Brown and Ethel Miller.

Robert Allen Nesteby, 55, of Elkader, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a tough battle with a brief illness. Bob was born
on July 19, 1951, in Oelwein to Gerald and Dorothy (Gamm) Nesteby. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Volga on October 7, 1951, and was confirmed on April 11, 1965, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. He graduated from Central Community High School in 1969. He earned his Associate of Arts degree from Waldorf College in 1971, and his Bachelor of Science from Upper Iowa University in 1973. He was united in marriage to Rose Katherine “Kathy” Bink in 1972. They made their home in Elkader where Bob started his career with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (now Northwestern Mutual Financial Network). They had two children, Michael and Alison. Bob and Kathy were divorced in 1991.
Bob remained with Northwestern Mutual for the remainder of his life. He celebrated his 30th anniversary with the company this year. He loved golfing, at which he excelled, spending time with his children and granddaughter, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed golfing with his son, and attending his daughter’s softball games. Bob also enjoyed traveling with his many friends. He was a loving father, son and grandfather who was always willing to lend a helping hand when a friend or family member needed him.
Bob will be sadly missed by his family and friends, but will be kept in our memories with an annual memorial golf tournament held in his honor at the Elkader Golf and County Club.
Survivors who will keep Bob’s memory alive include his parents, Gerald and Dorothy Nesteby of Elkader; his two children, Michael (Melanie) Nesteby of Coggon and Alison Nesteby of Manchester; one granddaughter, Alexis, of Coggon; a brother, Gary (Judy) Nesteby of Marion; nieces and nephews; a special friend Kathy Schultz of Elkader and many, many friends.

Francis Alfred Kester was born
on August 12, 1918, in rural Linn County, Iowa, to Alfred G. and Clara M. (Bading) Kester. He was raised and educated in the area graduating from Troy Mills High School. He entered the United States Army on October 6, 1942. Francis was in the European Theatre and was part of the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. He obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Francis received the Presidential Unit Citation which is awarded to combat units of the United States and its Allies for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy of the U.S. He was honorably discharged on December 22, 1945, and returned to the Troy Mills area where he farmed. Francis was united in marriage to Veronica Keegan, on March 26, 1951, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan. Five children were born
to this union. Together they farmed in the Coggon and Ryan area. Francis also worked as a machinist at Cherry-Burrell in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1981 as an inspector. In 2000, Francis and Veronica moved to Marion. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Francis died on Friday morning, September 22, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. He was eighty-eight years of age. Francis was a member of the Ryan American Legion, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and since 2000 was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion. Francis enjoyed woodworking and collecting model cars. Survivors include his wife, Veronica of Marion; five children, Mary (Bruce) Kuhn of Aurora, Colorado, Theresa (Doug) Andrus of Maple Lake, Minnesota, Larry Kester of Waterloo, Karen (Chris) Schendt of Papillion, Nebraska and Kathy (Ralph) Waltman of Columbia, Missouri; six grandchildren, Adam and Ryan Kuhn, Ian and Ross Andrus, Savannah and Austin Schendt; four brothers, Glen Kester of Walker, Louis (Vaneta) Kester of Manchester, Gene (Jeanette) Kester of Jesup, and Alan Kester of Texas; one sister-in-law, Doris (Henry) Cole of Decorah; and one brother-in-law, Bob (Linda) Wilson of Ottumwa. Francis was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Darrell Kester; one sister, Edna Wilson; and a sister-in-law, Jane Kester.

Berdena Mildred was born
near Oneida, Iowa, on June 11, 1920, the daughter of Adrian and Zella (Zirtzman) Hatch. She was raised and educated in the Manchester area, graduating from Manchester High School in 1938. On June 1, 1938, she was united in marriage to Jacob “Jake” Mangold at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they farmed in Delaware County until moving to Manchester in 1956. Berdena worked thirty-two years at the Super Value Grocery Store. “Jake” died in 1969. Berdena was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, country music, and traveling. Berdena died on Thursday, September, 21, 2006 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following an extended illness. She was eighty-six years of age. Survivors include three daughters, Elaine (Gary) Atkinson of Ryan, Gail (Robert) Renfrow of Lenexa, Kansas, and Lolita (Robert) Kulper of Cedar Falls; one brother, Ira (Wilma) Hatch of Manchester; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Hatch of Manchester; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Berdena was preceded in death by her husband, Jake; her parents; and one brother, Chester Hatch.

Leo LaVern Benson, 81, Prairie du Chien, WI, formerly of Elkader, died Tuesday, September 19, 2006, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a long illness. He was born
November 11, 1924, in Highland Township, to Bert and Pauline (Fishel) Benson. Leo graduated from Elkader High School.
He was united in marriage to Florence Ogle. Three children were born
to this union. They later divorced. He married Buelah Dunlap and she died in March 8, 2002.
Leo farmed for many years, was an antique dealer and in later years, he was a Florida Keys commercial fisherman. He loved spending time with his family and friends and his faithful dog, Sparky.
Survivors include his companion, Margie Goblet, Marathon, FL, three children, Diane Benson, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Tom Benson, McGregor, Mark (Mona) Benson, Elgin; three step-children, Tony (Lucy) Dunlap, Fountain, CO, Roger (Carrie) Dunlap, Decorah, Mona (David) Schultz, Luana; seventeen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Buelah and one sister, Ernestine Allen.

Elinor Agnes was born
January 15, 1916, in New Albin, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Sheppard) Sylvester. At age three she moved with her family to the Littleport area. She attended country school and graduated from Littleport High School in 1934. Elinor was united in marriage to Bernard Kellogg on June 1, 1935, in Galena, Illinois. Together they farmed in the Strawberry Point area. In 1950 they adopted Kevin. They moved to Manchester in 1952, and were co-owner of Kellogg’s Conoco Service Station. Elinor died on Sunday morning, September 17, 2006, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following a brief illness. She was ninety years of age. Elinor was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She loved to visit with friends, enjoyed sewing and gardening. Survivors include a son, Kevin Kellogg, of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews Elinor was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard on November 26, 2000; her parents; two sisters, Frances Nading and Ida Nading; four brothers, two as infants, and Hubert and Dale Sylvester.

Elmer was born
March 15, 1924, to Louis and Rose (Messerli) Zumbach. He received his education in rural schools and graduated from Buck Creek High School in 1941. He married Mary C. Freese on June 6, 1947, at Monticello. Following their marriage, they engaged in farming in Milo Township. Together they raised three sons. Elmer farmed until poor health forced him to retire. In 1998, he moved to Garnett Place in Cedar Rapids. For the last two years, Elmer resided at Cottage Grove in Cedar Rapids. Elmer died on Friday, September 15, 2006, at Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. He served on the Ryan Co-op Board of Directors, was a member of the Ryan Lions Club, and an active member of the Peace Lutheran Church. Elmer is survived by three sons, Steve (Kathy) Zumbach of West Des Moines, Mark (Lisa) Zumbach of Chicago, Illinois, and Jeff (Mary) Zumbach of Ryan; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Justin) Hu, Matthew Zumbach, and Lauren Zumbach; two brothers, Myron (Carol) Zumbach and LaVerne (Marlene) Zumbach all of Coggon; and sister-in-law Velma Zumbach of Monticello. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and eldest brother.
