Joseph S. Funk, 86, Edgewood, died Friday, June 17, 2005, at his home following a brief illness. He was born icon in Faith, SD, on June 19, 1918, to Francis and Susan (Klein) Funk. Joseph received his elementary education in the county schools, later he transferred to and graduated from Edgewood High School. Joseph served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a meat cutter for many years, worked at J.C. Penney in Cedar Rapids and Midwest Logging in Edgewood. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening, playing cards, baking and traveling. Survivors include his sister Victoria (Floyd) Smith, Edgewood; eight nieces, Rosita (Jay) Kleaveland, Waterloo, Minnie (Mike) Fannon, Edgewood, Lora Smith, Des Moines, Mary (David) Kirby, Edgewood, Jean (Allan) Johnson, Strawberry Point, Virginia (Richard) Henrahan, Cummings, Darlene Lawrence, Central City, Charlene Zahorik, Shellsburg; two nephews, John (Jane) Walker, Des Moines and Richard (Sherri) Walker, Des; Moines and many friends. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and one sister and her husband, Margaret (John) Walker.

Doris Jane Sickels, 57, Monona, died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a four year courageous battle with cancer. She was born icon April 9, 1948, in McGregor to Arnold and Donna (Lestina) Martie. Doris was baptized May 8, 1949 and confirmed June 2, 1963. She was united in marriage to Burdette Scheffert on June 3, 1966. Three children were born icon to this union. She later married Rodney Sickels in 1975. Doris loved spending time with family and friends, flowers, gardening, fishing, shopping, cats and the outdoors. Survivors include her mother; three children Doreen (Scott) Doerring, Monona, Darwyn Scheffert, Monona, Becky (Timothy) Kruse, Monona; three grandchildren, Danyelle Kruse, Monona, Bradley Doerring, Monona and Britanni Doerring, Monona and many friends. Doris was preceded in death by her father; paternal grandparents, Alfred and Priscilla Martie and maternal grandparents, Frank and Emma Lestina.

Irene F. Gleason, 82, of Greeley, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital following a long illness. She was born icon April 11, 1923, in rural Elkport to Floyd and Bertha (Willie) Williams. She graduated from Elkport High School in 1941. She attended Iowa State Teachers College after which she taught country school for a few years. Irene was united in marriage to Glen Gleason on February 14, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Three children were born icon to this union. They made their home and farmed in the Elk Township area throughout their married life together. Irene enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, her cats, flowers, visiting and family gatherings. She is survived by her husband, Glen Gleason, Greeley; children, Nile (Debra) Gleason, Edgewood, Donna (Bill) Brummond, Ellicott City, MD and Elvis (Joan) Gleason, Greeley; seven grandchildren, Sally Taylor, Susan Gleason, Carl, Cathy and Karen Brummond, Michelle and Eric Gleason; brothers and sisters, LaVera (Burdette) Schenke, Colesburg, Faye (LaVern) Wiskus, Colesburg, Jean (Leonard) Morarend, Guttenberg, Ray (Shirley) Williams, Elkader and Gerry Williams, Elkport. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Marvin, Ivan and Julius Allen (in infancy).

Donna Marie McManigle was born icon in Manchester on December 27, 1959, to Roland and Karen (Krapfl) McManigle. She was raised and educated in West Delaware Community School. She lived at home and helped raise her siblings and later her four children. She was united in marriage to Larry Herman on July 4, 2004. Donna died suddenly at her home in Manchester on Wednesday, June 8, 2005. She was forty-five years of age. Survivors include her husband, Larry Herman of Manchester; her four children, Nathan (Nicole) McMangile of Lamont, Joshua Smith of Fort Madison, Kendra McManigle of Edgewood, and Keli McManigle of Garnavillo; six grandchildren; her parents, Harold and Karen Hutchinson of Strawberry Point; six siblings, Darla (Mike) Goerdt of Dyersville, Brenda (Randy) Kramer of Guttenberg, Brian McManigle of Dubuque, Leslie Hutchinson of Arlington, Tammy Hutchinson of Cedar Rapids, and Nicole (Paul) Simpson of Strawberry Point. Donna was preceded in death by her biological father, Roland McManigle; and a brother Bruce.

Sarah Jane “Sally” Whittle, 76, of Elkader, IA, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, en route home from St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN, after a courageous battle with heart disease. She was born icon on June 1, 1929, in Cresco, IA, to Raymond and Mae (Hallman) Rathert. After graduating from Cresco High School, she earned her teaching certificate at Iowa State Teacher’s College, Cedar Falls, IA. She later attended Luther College in Decorah and Upper Iowa University, where she earned her degree. Sally was united in marriage to Walter Whittle on October 17, 1970. They made their home in Elkader after their marriage. Sally enjoyed a forty-three year career, teaching in elementary schools in northeast Iowa including many years in the West Union School District, where she retired. She was a devoted and loving wife, sister and aunt whose family came second only to her faith. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader with her husband for many years. Survivors include her husband, Walter Whittle, Elkader; a sister, Mary (John) Wildman, Elkader; a brother, Will (Nancy) Rathert, Houston, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Jim.

Molly Ann Schmidt, 8, Volga, died Tuesday, June7, 2005, of an accidental drowning in the Volga River. She was born icon November 18, 1996, in Ames, IA, to Tom and Jennifer (Christiansen) Schmidt. Molly just completed the second grade at Central Community School in Elkader. She enjoyed softball, playing with family and friends, cooking, the outdoors and helping her mother with babysitting. Survivors include her parents, Tom and Jennifer, Volga; three sisters, Malerie, Montanna and Monica, all at home; her grandparents, Douglas and Robin Schwandt, Mt. Ayr and Robert and Donna Schmidt, Dubuque; great-grandparents, James Cawthorne, South Dakota, Emma Schultz, Holy Cross and Leonard and Ann Schmidt, Dubuque and aunts and uncles, Misty Erickson, Des Moines, Pat Schmidt, Dubuque, Barb (Dan) Hess, Edgewood, Carla (Randy) Hess, Dubuque and Peggy Ostrander, Iowa City; step-aunts and step-uncles, Jarrod Schwandt, Winterset and Tiffany Schwandt, Fort Dodge and many other friends and relatives who loved Molly. Molly was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Clarence Schultz and Donna Cawthorne.

Arlene Florence Sass, 81, Luana, IA, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Prairie Maison Care Center, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a long illness. She was born icon August 8, 1923, in Monona Township to Alvin and Amanda (Backhaus) Johanningmeier. She was baptized on July 29, 1923, and confirmed on April 10, 1938, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Arlene attended Evergreen Country School during her elementary years, and then transferred to Luana High School, where she graduated from in 1941. She was united in marriage to Donald Sass on February 21, 1946, also at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Don and Arlene farmed all of their married life. After graduating from high school, Arlene worked at Hoth Manufacturing in Luana, Eteldorf's Clover Farm Store in Monona and Ben Dale Cafe in Luana. She taught Sunday school at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. She loved spending time with family and friends. In her retirement, she enjoyed antique auctions, volunteering at Froelich, making quilts and putting puzzles together. She also enjoyed finishing wood crafts that Don made for her grandchildren for Christmas and wedding gifts. She was a member of Gooding Better Neighbors Ladies Club and Hope Circle. Survivors include her husband, Donald Sass, Luana; five sons, Jerome (Kris) Sass, Luana, James (Diane) Sass, Dubuque, Ronald (Glee) Sass, Luana, Robert (Mary) Sass, Luana, Richard (Theresa) Sass, St. Olaf; two brothers, Allen (Anita) Johanningmeier, Liberty, MS, Keith (Mary Pat) Johanningmeier, Decorah; one sister, Maxine Borton, St. Louis, MO; sisters-in-law Shirley (Calvin) Henkes, Farmersburg, Janette (Karl) Wilker, Clermont; fourteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother in infancy, Leo Johanningmeier; sister-in-law, Margaret Johanningmeier and brother-in-law, Richard Borton.

Marion Adelaide Barton, 85, Elkader, IA, died Friday, June 03, 2005, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, MN, following a brief illness. She was born icon in Elkader, IA, on July 3, 1919, to Daniel L. and Theresa (Hofer) Barton. Marion graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School, Elkader, and attended Elkader Junior College for one year. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Church and the Elkader Community. Marion was a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Elkader, where she was a chief operator, retiring in 1967, when the office closed. She enjoyed visiting Joan and friends in Rochester, shopping, making candy at Christmas, playing cards, traveling with the Heritage Club and going to the Boat. Marion was a member of St. Joseph's Crafters and a charter member of the Elkader Golf and Country Club. Marion worked part time in the Clayton County Treasurer's office until the death of her brother Dan, at which time she went to full time. Survivors include one sister, Joan Barton, Elkader and many friends. Marion was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Daniel Barton.
