Adelaide Louise (Walerius) Werner, of Elgin, died September 22, 2004 at the age of 87 years. She was the daughter of Casper and Katherine (Schoenecker) Walerius, was born
January 23, 1917, at Jordan, MN. She lived during her youth in the area around Jordan and St. Paul, MN. On June 7, 1942, she married Merle Henry Werner in St. Paul, MN. Three children were born
to this union; a son, David, who died n infancy, a son, James and a daughter, Cheryl. Addie and her family lived n St. Paul, MN, for over forty years where she was a member of St. Pascal’s Catholic Church. Addie and Merle moved to Elgin, IA, in 1996, where they were members of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Clermont, IA. In her earlier years, Addie was a Girl Scout Leader; sang in the choir at St. Pascal’s and enjoyed square dancing. She was an avid crocheter and knitter, and made over fifty afghans and numerous other items for her family and friends. She also enjoyed keeping a photo record of her family through the years. In April of 2002, Addie moved to Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, after a brief illness and has resided there until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle; son, David and grandson, Brad. Addie is survived by her son, James Werner and wife Deed of St. Paul, MN; daughter, Cheryl Meyer and husband James of Elgin, IA; grandchildren, David Meyer and wife, Tina of New Vienna, IA; Mike Werner of Venice, FL; Tom Werner of St. Paul, MN and Jamie Meyer of Cedar Rapids, Ia; great-grandchildren, Haley, Victor and Valery Meyer of New Vienna, IA; a sister, Dolores Wesley of Bellchester, MN and a sister, Frances Ellingsworth of Lebanon, MO; nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. Addie will be remembered always and kept in the hearts of those who loved her.

Harvey Ferdinand Gruber, 97, formerly of Monona, died Monday, September 20, 2004 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Montezuma, IA. He was born
January 7, 1907, in Lansing to Ferdinand and Elizabeth (Troendle) Gruber. Harvey graduated from Lansing High School. On February 18, 1936, he was united in marriage to Katherine Sullivan at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Wexford. Two children were born
to this union. As a young man, Harvey shocked wheat in the west and did construction work in the Ozark area. During the time they lived in Lansing, Harvey and Kay owned and operated a dairy and home delivery service. He farmed his entire life. Harvey enjoyed fishing, yard work and spending time with family. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Foresters. Harvey is survived by his children, Dan (Olganida) Gruber, New Sharon, Connie (David) Carroll, San Diego, CA; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kay on June 11, 1995; brothers and sisters, Adolph Gruber, Alvina, Irene Kerndt, Freeman Gruber and Clarence Gruber.

Guy Eugene Gould was born
June 20, 1930, in Marengo, IA, the son of Guy and Emiline (Zimmerman) Gould. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church, Marengo. Gene, as he was known by family and friends, lived his early years in Iowa County. He attended country school and later graduated from Blairstown High School in 1948. Gene was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sumner on June 3, 1951. He married Ruth Helen Lang on January 1, 1951. Four children were born
to this union. In 1957, the family moved to the Littleport area when Gene was engaged in farming until his retirement in 1995. Gene was a real “people” person - - serving his community as a member of the Clayton County Extension Council, Church Council, Union Cemetery Board, Littleport Rec Club, Littleport Fire Department and First Responders. His biggest joy was time spent with his family. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting, especially deer hunting each year with the usual group. A highlight each year was time spent at the Clayton County Fair. But, above all, Gene’s favorite pastime was talking with people, whether he knew them or not. He was well-known for his good-natured harassment of everyone, young and old alike. On September 17, 2004, Gene passed away peacefully in his home after a lengthy illness. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Helen (Lang) Gould, Edgewood; children David (Terri) Gould, Strawberry Point, Diane (Mike) McClintock, Elkader, Terry (Marlene) Gould, Strawberry Point, Tim (Lisa) Gould, Elkader; six grandchildren, Adam Gould, Aaron Gould, Adriane McClintock, Ryan McClintock, Brent Gould, Weslee Gould; one step-grandson, Collin White and one sister, Genevieve Martin, Eufula, OK. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Arthur Gould.

Gertrude Auer Rose, 87, Monona, IA, died Friday, September 17, 2004, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, IA, following a brief illness. She was born
on February 18, 1917, in Garnavillo to Edward and Josephine (Heck) Auer. She attended Bowden country schools, St. Patrick’s Elementary through eighth grade, and received her G.E.D. in Calmar in 1971. On September 4, 1939, she was united in marriage to Joseph C. Rose. Ten children were born
to this union. Gertrude loved to garden, quilt, bake, spending time with family, playing cards and singing. She was a 4-H leader in Allamakee County, member of St. Patrick’s church, Rosary Society, ACCW, church choir, C.C.D. teacher and worked with Meals on Wheels. Survivors include seven children, Laura (Leon) Hildebrand, Earlville, Ruth (Marvin) Widlund, Ellendale, MN, Bill Rose, Earlville, IL, Tom Rose, Monona, Sue Wettschreck, Staples, MN, Tim (Sue) Rose, Monona, Trudy (Jerry) Nielsen, Mankato, MN, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Kitty Ohlert, Stevens Point, MN, Eileen Johanningmeier, McGregor, Angie Hogan, Postville; two brothers, Ralph Auer, Lansing and Edward Auer, Winthrop. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on June 27, 1986; three children, Donna Murphy, Jim Rose, Ned Rose; two brothers, George Auer, Loras Auer; four sisters, Laura Auer, Dorothy Auer, Leona Voss and Mary Kathryn Stien.

Joe A. Totman, 86, Edgewood, died Friday, September 17, 2004, at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg following a long illness. Joe was born
March 14, 1918, in Clayton County to Floyd and Maggie (Combs) Totman. Joe was a carpenter and avid woodworker in the Edgewood area for most of his life. He and Evelyn ran their own business for 50 years in the Woodcenter area. Joe loved fishing, hunting and playing cards in his leisure time as well as spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of fifty nine years Evelyn; brother, Carl (Pat); daughters, Connie (Terry) Hansel, Bonnie (Glen) Swoveland, Judi (Chris) Lofton, Jill (Paul) Staats, Jo (Rick) Rose; as well as three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three great- grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Maggie Totman, brothers, Lee, Howard, Lloyd, George and sister Mae Moser.

January 1, 1948 in McGregor, IA to Earl and Mildred (Leach) Kleinow. She attended Mar-Mac School in McGregor. Sandy was united in marriage to Harold E. Beck on August 14, 1968 at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center, IA. Four children were born
to this union. Sandy worked for Products Unlimited and Guttenberg Industries over the years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband Harold E. Beck, Garber; three sons, Harold Joseph Beck (fiancee Tonya Picha), Guttenberg, Robert William (Christie) Beck, Garnavillo and LeAllan Beck, Garber; four grandchildren, Jager, Derrick, Kyle and Kiera; brother and sisters, William (Cherylynn) Kleinow, Bloomington, WI, Sharon Kricke, McGregor, Karen (Leonard) Pillard, Black River Falls, WI; sisters-in-law, Vicki Kleinow, McGregor, Jane Kleinow, Prairie du Chien, WI and numerous nieces and nephews. Mildred W. Stoops, 94, of Elkader, IA, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at the Elkader Care Center, following a long illness. Mildred W. Stoops was born
October 7, 1909 in Boardman Township; she was the youngest of Joseph J. and Mary Jane (Ehrhardt) Kuehl’s 10 children. Her brothers and sisters preceding her in death were: Arthur, Fred, George, Francis Scullen, Marie Riemer, Carrie Riemer, Kate Baars, Hilda Keleher and Louise Klink. In 1936, Mildred married Malcolm C. Stoops of Elkader. He preceded her in death in 1991 after 54 years of marriage. Mildred grew up in the Elkader area and except for a brief time in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho with Malcolm during his Navy years, she spent all her adult life in Elkader. Her father, Joseph, was president of the church council when Peace Church of Elkader was built. She was baptized and married in Peace Church and remained active there until her health declined just a few months ago. Attending church on Sunday was the highlight of her week. She enjoyed Women’s Fellowship and was a member of the Deborah Circle. She served on the East Side Cemetery Board for several years. Mildred worked for the ASCS Office in Elkader for 28 years, retiring in 1972. Following her retirement she enjoyed attending NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees) meetings and was active in VFW Auxiliary, serving as president for several years. She served on the Care Review Committee of Scenic Acres for 21 years and visited with residents of the Elkader Care Center frequently. She enjoyed the meals and fellowship at the Elkader Meal Site for many years. Survivors are her son, Curtis and Ardell (Lange) Stoops, Bella Vista, Arkansas, two grandchildren, Chris of Dallas, Texas and Collin of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and “good neighbor Linda Collins”.
