Emmy Hergert, age 89, died Tuesday evening, November 15, 2005 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Middle Amana following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 19, 2005 at Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Jon Childers officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 P.M. Friday, November 18, 2005 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Richard and wife Patricia of Dewitt; four grandchildren, Tom Hergert and wife Judi of Des Moines, Susan Hergert of Coralville, Karen Bertolino and husband Theron of Dewitt and Catherine Hentges and husband Bruce of St. Louis; eight great- grandchildren, and a great-great granddaughter. In addition she is survived by a sister, Cornelia Hess of Waterloo and a brother, Harold Reihmann and wife Shirley of Connersville, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Gus on June 3, 2004.
Emma M. “Emmy” Reihmann was born
June 9, 1916 in Middle Amana, the daughter of Jacob and Helen Jung Reihmann. She received her education in the Amana schools and married Gustav B. “Gus” Hergert on October 5, 1935. Besides being a homemaker, Emmy worked in the cafeteria at Amana Refrigeration for 20 years. She loved cooking for her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed handiwork such as cross-stitching, crocheting and needlepoint. Emmy was a member of the Amana Church Society.
The family appreciates and would like to thank Amenity Hospice and the nurses and staff at Colonial Manor for the attention and wonderful care given to Emmy.
John William Harney, age 65 of Medford, OR, died Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at the Ashland Community Hospital, in Ashland, OR. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 5, 2005, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Parnell with Fr. Pat Lumsden officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Holbrook with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, November 4, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell with a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. A memorial fund has been established. He is survived by four sisters, Marjory Weldon and husband Harold of Parnell, Mary Quinlan of Oxford, Jane Olson and husband Keith of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Elizabeth Harney of New York; a sister-in-law, Ann Harney of Coralville and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James Harney, brother-in-law, Jerry Quinlan, and his dear and special friend, Joan Robbins.
John is also survived by Joan’s children, Chris Robbins and family, Janet and Tim Robbins-Turk and family, Lynn and John Nilsen and family and close friend and neighbor, Charles Bloomingcamp.
John William Harney was born
October 18, 1940 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Anthony and Mary Ellen Ford Harney. He graduated from the Parnell High School in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, spending a year in Vietnam. John lived for a year in Alaska, and then moved to Oregon, where he owned and operated an auto repair business.
Robert “Buff” Olson, age 65 of Marengo, died Sunday evening, October 16, 2005 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, of complications from a stroke. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, October 20, 2005 at First Lutheran Church, rural Conroy, with Rev. Jackie Tjarks officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; four daughters, Josie Olson, at home, Holly Disterhoft and husband Duane of Marengo, Linette Lacina of Blairstown and Sherri Olson of Marengo; a son, Lance Olson of Marengo and a stepson, Seth Griggs of Grinnell; eight grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, a step great-grandchild, and his mother, Renee Olson of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his father, and a brother, Larry Olson.
Robert Louis Olson was born
January 13, 1940 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Louis and Renee Hite Olson. He received his education in the Marengo schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1958. Robert married Linda Haack on March 27, 1987 at First Lutheran Church, Conroy. Robert was hired as a night patrol officer on February 5, 1968. He became Chief of Police on November 4, 1968 and served in that capacity until retiring in January of 1995.
At the time of his retirement, Bob was the longest serving police chief in the state of Iowa. He was past president of the Iowa Trappers Association and a founding member of the Iowa Long Rifles. He was active with the East Central Iowa Peace Officers Association for many years. Bob was a member of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, the National Rifle Association, American Mountainmen, the National Sheriffs Association, the National and the Iowa Trappers Association, and the Iowa Police Chiefs Association.
Bob was very active in retirement. He served as mayor of Marengo for two years. He and his wife, Linda attended muzzle loading shoots and rendezvous throughout the Midwest. He also continued at his life long passion of gunsmithing. Bob was a long time nationally known muzzle loading rifle builder, and at times there was a four to five year waiting list of customers for his beautiful Hawken Rifles, pistols and trade guns.
Bob was also a student of American History and had immense knowledge of the American Indian and American Westward Expansion. He served for many years on the Board of Directors for the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, Nebraska, where he regularly visited to research black powder guns and Western History.
Bob believed in “living” life. He was a loving and caring individual, touching so many lives over the years. He was never too busy to stop and visit, whether or not he knew you, and would offer a helping hand whenever needed. He will be missed.
Joseph George “Joe” Lower, age 85, of Parnell, died Sunday, September 18, 2005 at English Valley Care Center from an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 22, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Parnell with Father Pat Lumsden officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post #369, Parnell and VFW Post #8797, Williamsburg. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where there will be a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. followed by a Knights of Columbus service. Memorials may be contributed to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Mary Laurine; 11 children, Betty Szyszka (Walt) of Amana, Dr. Thomas (Ceree) of Osceola, Robert (Dorothy) of Iowa City, M.Patricia Lower of Las Vegas, NV, Janet Caldwell (Kevin) of Washington, Francis (Elizabeth) of Riverside, Helen Heisler (Tim) of Phoenix, AZ, Donald (Theresa) of Williamsburg, David (Maria del Mar) of Spain, Marita Stewart (Robert) of Phoenix, AZ, Susan Lower of Iowa City; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Brown of North Liberty; 23 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 4 step-grandchildren. In addition he is survived by a brother and his wife, Leonard (Rozella) Lower of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Mary Kathryn in 1946, a son Michael J. in 1974, a son-in-law William J. Dickhaus in 1993, and a sister Veda Hanson.
Joseph George Lower was born
April 12, 1920 in Williamsburg, Iowa the son of George B. and Kathryn Callan Lower. He attended school in Parnell and graduated from Parnell High School in 1938. He then went on to welding school in Chicago. He married Mary Laurine Hanson on July 9, 1941 at St. Michael’s Church in Holbrook. Joe served in the U.S. Army for 3 years and 9 months, serving in Germany, Africa, Italy, England, and landing on Utah Beach in France with the 531 st Engineers. He was discharged on October 14, 1945. Upon returning home, Joe engaged in farming and in later years became a rural mail carrier for the Williamsburg Post Office, from which he retired.
Joe was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Parnell, Rural Letter Carriers Association, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, and First Commander of the American Legion Post #369, Parnell.
Judy Mae Tarvin, 58 of Bloomfield, formerly of South Amana, died Thursday morning, September 8, 2005 at the home of her brother in South Amana. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones, following a brief struggle with cancer. Funeral Services: 1:00 P.M. Monday, September 12, 2005, Meadow Hill Christian Fellowship, Homestead, with Rev Dianne Buswell officiating. Burial will be in the South Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Sunday, September 11, 2005 at the church. Memorials may be contributed to Meadow Hills Christian Fellowship or the Iowa County Hospice of Compassion. She is survived by a son, Todd Tarvin of Blaine, MN, a daughter, Tami Tarvin of South Amana, 2 granddaughters, Alisha and Amanda Lewis of Brooklyn, and a special friend, Charles Vande Noord of Bloomfield. Also surviving are her father and stepmother, Harry and Rosa Ackerman of South Amana; a brother, Les Ackerman and wife Linda of South Amana; two sisters, Peg Roemig and husband Les of Middle Amana, and Wendy Ziegler and husband Ekhard of Iowa City; 4 nieces and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by hr mother, Louisa Ackerman.
Judy Mae Ackerman was born
December 14, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the daughter of Harry and Louisa Meyer Ackerman. She lived the majority of her life in South Amana and attended the Amana schools. She enjoyed motorcycling, RAGBRAI, helping out others, and spending time with her family.
Grace E. Weisskopf, age 85, died Friday evening, August 19, 2005 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 23, 2005, Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo with Rev. Lynne Bisson officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery rural Williamsburg. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday evening, August 22, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Trinity UCC Building Fund.
She is survived by two sons, Robert (Carol) of Grinnell, Ronald (Gilda) of Grinnell; two daughters, Marilyn Weisskopf of Newton, Joyce (Kim) Keiser of Marengo, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lester on May 20, 1995, one brother Raymond, and a sister Marie Rhinehart.
Grace Elizabeth Byerly was born
December 13, 1919 in rural Brooklyn, the daughter of Oliver and Sada Hopkins Byerly. She received her education in the Poweshiek County schools and married Lester D. Weisskopf on February 2, 1938 in the Trinity UCC Parsonage. She was a homemaker throughout her life. Grace was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and enjoyed Women’s Fellowship, Embroidering, Tri-Chem Painting, Gardening, Canning, and spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alma M. Zuber, age 89, died Friday, August 12, 2005 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday, August 15, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by a son, Mervin and wife Ruth of Marengo; two daughters, Shirley Slaymaker, and Joyce Burke and husband Lewis also of Marengo; three grandchildren, Roy Zuber and wife Sue of Mesa, AZ, Vicki Cobb, and husband Rich of Marengo, and Shelly Schrupp and husband Jeffrey of South Carolina; five great-grandchildren, April, Heather, Jacob, Joseph and Ellie; a sister, Ella Minks of Bellflower, CA and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Earnest; two brothers, Eldon and Ervin Teggatz and a sister Edna.
Alma Margaret Teggatz was born
January 25, 1916 in York Township, rural Williamsburg, the daughter of Ernest and Ahlina Buhrman Teggatz. She received her education in the Iowa County schools. She married Earnest Zuber on September 17, 1936 at St. John’s Lutheran Parsonage in Marengo. She was a homemaker. Alma enjoyed gardening, flowers, bingo, cooking and baking and corn sorting at the Pioneer Seed Corn plant. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
David F. Maschmann, age 65, of Miller, MO, formerly of the Williamsburg area, died unexpectedly at his home in Miller on Monday, July 18, 2005. The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 P.M. on Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Private family services will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by three daughters, Denise (Rick) Sieck of Elberon, anglea Maschmann of Ottumwa, and Judy (Dan) Yuska of Toledo; ten grandchildren, Lindsay and Brandon Young, Shalina Maschmann, Lacie and Derek Kriegel, Danny Jr. and Brian Yuska, and Kaiyla, Kelsey, and Kaleigh Sieck; and two sisters, Gloria (Jim) Cates of Pahrump, NV, and Margie (Ted) Harden of Las Vegas, NV. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, John James.
David Frederick Maschmann was born
June 20, 1940 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Dorothea Drake Maschmann. He received his education in the Williamsburg parochial schools and attended Williamsburg High School. He married Carol Ann Griffin on August 26, 1961 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. The couple later divorced. David farmed in earlier years and was employed with Jones Trucking and Gahring Trucking firms of Williamsburg. For the last 35 years he has owned and operated his own rig and was leased to Boomerang Trucking of Mount Vernon, MO. He loved farming and driving his semi. He also was a charter member of the Rod Hawks Car Club.
M. Mae Schumacher, age 93, died Saturday morning, June 25, 2005 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, with Father Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday, June 27, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by five sons, Ronald Schumacher and Deeann Wilhelm of Marengo, Norman (Lorraine) Schumacher of St. Louis, MO, Larry (Gloria) Schumacher of Marengo, James (Kathy) Schumacher of Cedar Rapids, Edward (Gloria) Schumacher of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Margaret Whittaker of Lenexa, KS; twelve grandchildren, Connie (John) Pegump, Kevin (Therese) Schumacher, Jeff Schumacher, Mark (Shelly) Schumacher, Michelle Schumacher, Vance (Adrienne) Schumacher, Serena (Erik) Brueggemeyer, Angi Schumacher, Brandon Schumacher, Chris (Suzanne) Schumacher, Tonya (Shawn) Samuelson; and fifteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Helen Hartin of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leo on April 9, 1987, an infant son, Thomas Carroll, a brother Thomas Hartin Jr. and a sister Alice Misbach.
Margaret Mae Schumacher was born
May 1, 1912 on a farm in Hilton Township, the daughter of Thomas and Wilhelmina “Minnie” Panknen Hartin. Margaret received her education in the Iowa County Schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1929. She married Leo F. Schumacher on September 24, 1932 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. The couple farmed for many years. She was a homemaker and also worked at the Marengo Hospital as an aide for 3 years. Margaret was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and the Merry Mixers. She enjoyed making quilts and afghans for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles, playing cards and making craft ornaments.
