Services for John Martzahn, 12, of Davenport, are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic, Davenport. Burial is in Mount Calvary cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport.
He died Feb. 9, 2004, at University Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, from complications of a heart transplant he received when he was 13 months old.
He was born Dec. 23, 1991, in Davenport, to John and Helen Lanigan Martzahn.
Survivors are parents, sister, Sharon Henkel, and niece, Caitlin Henkel, all of Davenport.

Services and Mass of Christian Burial for Vivian McDonnell, 100, of Davenport, are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport.
Burial is 12:30 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick's cemetery , Villa Nova, Iowa. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVies, Davenport, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
She died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at the Kahl Home for the Aged, Davenport.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Olive Klindt, Bettendorf, and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
F. Raymond Michael
F. Raymond Michael, 68, of Bettendorf, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Fejervary Health Care, Davenport.
There are no services. A memorial gathering will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.
He was born Aug. 10, 1935, in Stockton, Calif., to Francis Raymond Michael I and Essie Fraiser Michael. He married

Mrs. Edward Weerts
Mrs. Edward R. Weerts, 97, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport.
Celebration of life services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Private family burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Esther C. Flesner was born June 4, 1906, in Golden, Ill., daughter of George W. and Minnie (Eber) Flesner. She met Edward R. Weerts the first day of second grade and they were lifelong sweethearts. They were married
Aug. 1, 1925, in Blue Island, Ill. They graduated together from Worsham (Funeral) College in Chicago. She was one of the youngest women funeral directors in Illinois. They established family funeral homes in Golden, LaSalle-Peru and Tonica in Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa. He died in 1971.
Mrs. Weerts was active in many civic, cultural, church and charitable organizations in each community, including the Davenport YWCA, Bettendorf Women's Club, St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary, St. Paul Lutheran Church and 4-H. She had been a member of The Outing Club, The Davenport Club and National Selected Morticians and retained her memberships in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, St. James Lutheran Church, Bettendorf, a life-member of St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary and an honorary member of the Scott County 4-H. Her quest for knowledge was stimulated by her membership in Questors and that was a real joy for her. She retained her keen mind, her faith and her dignity right up to the end.
Memorials may be made to Quad City Symphony, St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Quad-City Chapter, American Red Cross.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Sue Ann Weerts, Stratham, N.H.; sons, E. Robert (Karen) Weerts, Centennial, Colo., and James F. Weerts, Bettendorf. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Richard Weerts, Jody Collentine, Libby Whitmore, Kitty O'Sullivan, Suzanne Weerts and Gina Wand; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Bert (Dorothy) Lewis, Fullerton, Calif.; and a brother, Wilbur Flesner, Golden, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Mrs. Lewis (Verna) Buss; and a daughter-in-law, Sandra Weerts.
Family members wish to express their heartfelt appreciation to her caregivers and friends Marie Verbraak and Pete Lehman.
Darrel `Bud' Dotson
Darrel I. 'Bud' Dotson, 78, of Rock Island, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at his residence.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island, where military rites will be performed by American Legion 569/200 and VFW Post 1303. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the church or to the Kidney Foundation of Illinois.
Mr. Dotson was born May 28, 1925, in Story County, Iowa, son of Clem and Florence Gochanour Dotson. He married
Eleanor 'Mickey' McNerney July 20, 1944, in Memphis, Tenn.
He owned and operated Dotson Jewelry, Rock Island, for 25 years before retiring in 1989. Prior to that, he worked for Brooks Jewelry in Rock Island for 15 years.
Bud served in the Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rock Island, where he was very active for many years. He was a former member of Rock Island Noon Kiwanis Club, Trio Lodge 57 A.F. & A.M., Rock Island, Kabba Shrine, Davenport. He was a past commander of Rock Island American Legion 200. He was also a member of Travelers Protective Association of America. Bud loved golfing and bowling and enjoyed the Cubs and Bears.
Bud is survived by his wife, Mickey; daughters, Bonnie Rice, Milan, Sandra King and her husband, James, Taylor Ridge; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister and her husband, Noradel and Harvey Larsen, Sioux City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin; four brothers; and one sister.
Janice Fox
Services for Janice A. Fox, 80, of Rock Island, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Rock Island. Burial is in Memorial Park cemetery , Rock Island.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the church.
Mrs. Fox died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.
The former Janice Benesh was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Rock Island, daughter of Andrew and Blanche Ague Benesh. She married
Robert J. Fox Sept. 10, 1944, in Rock Island.
Janice graduated from Rock Island High School. She retired from the former Franciscan Medical Center, Rock Island, in 1992, where she had worked as a switchboard operator. She previously worked as a bookkeeper for Moffitt Realty, Rock Island.
Mrs. Fox was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, lifetime member of the 106th Infantry Division Auxiliary and lifetime member and former secretary of the Illinois State Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Robert Alfrey, San Antonio, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Caryl Fox, Santa Monica, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Rose Fox, Rock Island; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a brother, Ronald Benesh, Rock Island. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Fox; and a sister, Betty DePaepe.
John Kakavas
John W. Kakavas, 76, of Moline, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at in National cemetery , Arsenal Island.
John was born Oct. 25, 1927, in Pekin, Ill., to George Kakavas and Clara Mariuzza Kakavas. He married
Dorothy Roman Aug. 26, 1951, at Salem Lutheran Church, Moline.
John was employed for 33 years as an industrial engineer at John Deere Plow Planter, retiring Dec. 20, 1984.
John was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He loved traveling and collecting John Deere memorabilia. He dedicated his life to his wife and six children.
Survivors and spouses are his wife, Dorothy; sons, Timothy and Deborah Kakavas, North Liberty, Iowa, David Kakavas, Moline, Kristian and Karla Kakavas, Fulton; daughters, Rebecca Kakavas, Moline, Amy Kakavas and Steven Cooper, Coralville, Iowa, Kara Kakavas, Moline; grandchildren, Jeremiah, Zachary and Joshua Frye, Daniel and Mathew Kakavas, Emma and Ryan Cooper and Kagan Kakavas.
Teresa Sorensen
Teresa Masters Sorensen, 53, a resident of Moline, passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at home after a courageous nine-month battle with cancer.
A celebration of her life will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to Gilda's Club of the Quad-Cities.
Teresa Hough was born April 30, 1950, in East Moline, to Merrel and Marion Williams Hough. She graduated from United Township High School in 1968 and later attended Black Hawk College, where she earned an associate of arts degree in accounting.
In the early 1970s, she traveled the western states as a magician's assistant and farmed in the Delmar, Iowa, area. She married
Eugene Masters, a former Moline alderman, in 1977. Together they raised two sons, Tyler and Todd Masters. Teresa and Gene provided family counciling at Unitarian churches throughout the Midwest. Gene passed away in 1995. She met Bruce W. Sorensen in 1999, and they were married
in Valrico, Fla., on New Year's Day of 2003.
Teresa worked for many years as a computer systems educator for McGladrey & Pullin, Davenport. Later, she was office manager for Edward Jones Investments, Davenport. In 1998, joined John Deere Harvester Works, where she worked in supply management and accounting until she became ill in May 2003.
Teresa was a very special person with many interests. Everyone she met was charmed by her warm smile and caring personality. Her bargain shopping skills were legendary among her friends and family. She loved collecting antiques and had a large library of first-edition books. She also collected ceramic figurines and women's shoes. Teresa enjoyed attending drag-racing events, Summerfests in Milwaukee, socializing with friends at the East Village in Davenport and was a regular winner of prizes at local Friday Fest events. In recent years, Teresa took up crocheting and gardening at home. She loved flowers and took great pride in her yard. She was especially fond of her dogs, Petey, Alex and Odie, and Katie the cat.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce; sisters, Vicki Hicks, Dubuque, and Shelagh (and Bob) Barbour, Cary, N.C.; her brother, Stan (and Wanda) Hough, Barstow; her parents, Merrel and Marion Hough, Campbells Island; her sons, Tyler Masters, Moline, and Todd (and Heather) Masters, Milan; her two grandsons, Maison and Micah Masters; and many nieces and nephews. Teresa also leaves behind many friends who touched her life with love and kindness.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Jason Suh and his wonderful staff at Medical Arts Associates for their kindness and support throughout Teresa's illness. God has called her home early, surely to help him take care of all the puppies in heaven. Amen.

John T. 'Butch' Cross, 63, of East Moline, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.

He was born Nov. 23, 1940, in Sedalia, Mo., son of Jack and Jo Williams Cross. He married
Jill Ragland Aug. 21, 1965, in Sedalia.
He was the car wash manager for Greater Quad City Auto Auction. He served in the Army during Vietnam.
Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Jill; daughters Melody (Jerry) Brown, Moline, Misty Cross, Bixby, Okla., and Dawn Cross, Blue Springs, Mo.

Mary A. Duda, 94, a resident of Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at the care center.

Mary was born July 23, 1909, in Kamienca, Poland, daughter of Joseph and Antoinette Opyt. She married
Frank J. Duda Feb. 15, 1936, in Chicago. He preceded her in death Jan. 25, 2003.
Mary enjoyed sewing, needlepoint and crocheting.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Genevieve and Howard Stien, Jacksonville, Fla., and Natalie and James Torres, Chicago Heights, Ill.; sons and daughters-in-law, Adrian and Carmella Duda, Richton Park, Ill., and Martin and Barbara Duda, Rock Island; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pearl `Peggy' Simpson
Pearl 'Peggy' L. Simpson, 80, of Downers Grove, Ill., died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at her home.
There will be no services. Interment will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Toon Funeral Home, Downers Grove, is handling arrangements.
She was born July 19, 1923, in Gladstone, Ill.
She was employed at the Downers Grove Township office. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Downers Grove.
She is survived by her children, Donald Simpson, Naperville, Ill., Douglas Simpson, Downers Grove, and Janet Prescott, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands, Robert Carey and George Simpson; and parents, Cecil and Lilly Gailbraith.
