Virgil McConnell
Virgil R. McConnell, 75, of 1455 Hospital Road, Silvis, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis.
Services will be 3 p.m. today at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. Services and entombment will be in Crown Hill cemetery , Denver, Colo.
Visitation will be 2 p.m. to service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Boys Town or a favorite charity.
Virgil was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Milan to Ralph and Eva Devinney McConnell. He married
Stella Roush Sept. 16, 1944, in Ottumwa, Iowa. She preceded him in death May 15, 1995.
He was owner of Boulder Manufacturing Co., Boulder, Colo., for 40 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of Rancho Bernardo Presbyterian Church in Rancho Bernardo, Calif.
He was a WWII Navy veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Rita Talchik, Deerfield Beach, Fla.; son, Steven McConnell, Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren; a sister, Genevieve Wallick, Boulder, Colo.; and a brother, Robert McConnell, Sebastopol, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and two sisters.
Grace Olson
Grace B. Olson, 92, of Silvis, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline, where further arrangements are pending.
LaNeta Bergheger
LaNeta G. Bergheger, 56, Andalusia, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at home, losing a 20-month battle against cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Family Funeral Services, Milan. Burial will be at Petrie cemetery , New Windsor.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family to be used for needy children.
LaNeta was born Nov. 3, 1943, in Barber, Ark., to Opal and Margie Kirksey Norris. She married
Bob Brasher in 1959, with whom she shared a son, Rob. She later shared a daughter, Sherry, with Jay Thomas. In 1989 she finally met her true soul mate, Don Bergheger, and they were married
June 12 of that year in Waldron, Ark. On May 6, 1993, their happiness was ended much too soon when he died of injuries received in an auto accident.
She was employed by John Deere for 23 years before retiring in 1997 from the Parts Distribution Center in Milan.
LaNeta's favorite hobby was playing the slots on the local boats, Lady Luck being her favorite. She enjoyed playing cards and taking short vacations with her girlfriends. She also enjoyed fishing with her grandson, especially while her husband was living. She loved her dog, Pugsy, and spoiled him rotten. But what she loved most was spoiling her grandkids, whom she loved dearly. They, as the rest of us, will miss her greatly.
LaNeta is survived by a daughter, Sherry Harrington, Westerville, Ohio; a son, Rob Brasher, Milan; grandchildren, Kylan Sprouse, Westerville, Cydney and Payton Brasher, Milan; her mother, Margie Norris, Booneville, Ark.; four brothers, all of Arkansas, Jerry Norris, Mountain Home, Lowell Norris, Booneville, Junior Norris, Mansfield, and Ronnie Norris, Booneville. She also leaves behind several other relatives, many very dear friends and her dog, Pugsy. She was preceded by her husband, Don; father; a sister, Barb Flanigan; and a grandson, Brenton Ranney.
Irene Brown
Irene L. Brown, 84, Aledo, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo. The Rev. David Bauer of Sunbeam United Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Aledo cemetery . Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, where memorials may be left to Sunbeam United Presbyterian Church.
She was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Ohio Grove Township, Mercer County, Ill., the daughter of Herman and Mamie Rell Brown. She received her education from local schools and graduated from Aledo High School. She married
Ray Brown Feb. 14, 1933, at the home of her parents in Ohio Grove Township, Mercer County. He died Oct. 30, 1995.
She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in the operation of their family farm in Suez Township, retiring to Aledo in 1973.
She was a member of Sunbeam United Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Women's Association.
She enjoyed golf, playing cards and was especially proud of the musical abilities of her family.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Rhonda Brown, Aledo; daughters and sons-in-law, Cherie and Norman Tracy, Aledo, Suzanne and Doug Ramer, Camanche, Iowa, and Rex Pickett, Chelan, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; a stepgrandson; nine great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Mamie Lou Hofstetter, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Rita Pickett; two grandsons, one stepgranddaughter, one great-greatgranddaughter and a sister, Lucille Brown.
Thelma Friichtenicht
Thelma E. Friichtenicht, 90, Aledo, formerly of Matherville, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Family Funeral Services, Viola. Burial is in Farlow Grove cemetery , Matherville.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mercer County Nursing Home.
She was born April 8, 1910, in Pawnee Station, Kan., the daughter of Joseph A. and Effie McNerney Turner. She married
Fred J. Friichtenicht June 18, 1930, in Nashua, Iowa. He died April 26, 1983.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Mercer County and Matherville Senior Citizens and 50-year member of the Rebecca Lodge.
Survivors include sons, Joseph F. Friichtenicht, Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., Richard D. Friichtenicht, Alexandria, Va., and Ronald D. Friichtenicht, Rock Island; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Vernon Maeltzer
Vernon L. Maeltzer, 89, Geneseo, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Sylvia House Hospice, Ocala, Fla.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Myers Chapel, Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Geneseo. The Rev. Ronald Webb will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Myers Chapel where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. by Stewart Lodge No. 92, AF&AM.; Memorials may be made to Hospice of Marion County, Florida.
Vernon Maeltzer was born July 5, 1911, in Geneseo, the son of Leander and Clara Wiese Maeltzer. He graduated from Geneseo High School. He married
Helen Marie Vienna Nov. 26, 1932, in Geneseo. She died Aug. 15, 1992.
Mr. Maeltzer owned and operated Maeltzer Frame and Axle in Geneseo and then retired from DeReu Skelgas, Geneseo.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Geneseo, and Moose Lodge 990, Geneseo, and he was a 50-year member of Stewart Lodge No. 92, AF&AM;, Geneseo. He enjoyed fishing and loved his grandchildren and his dog.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne and Mary Ann Maeltzer, Tavares, Florida; grandchildren, Tamara and Don Frazier, Ocala, and Scott and Aileen Maeltzer, South Beloit, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Tyra Hursman, Auberndale, Fla., Amber Hursman, Ocala, Cory Maeltzer and Michael Maeltzer, both of South Beloit. A brother preceded him in death.
Conrad Schadt
Conrad H. Schadt, 86, Port Byron, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.
Visitation is 10 a.m. to service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to In-Touch of Lutheran Social Services or the Mississippi River Beautification and Restoration Project.
Mr. Schadt was born April 1, 1914, in Moline, the son of Conrad A. and Elsie Steckman Schadt. He married
Vala Hollister McRoberts April 14, 1956, in Port Byron. He retired from Midland Iron and Steel Co., Moline.
He enjoyed the Mississippi River, building boats and giving people rides on the Schadt-Raft fine, the last boat he built.
Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Jan Schadt, Huntley, Ill.; stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Rich Belouski, Cordova, Nadine Doss, Port Byron, and Al VanLerberghe, Cordova; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Rita McRoberts, Princeton, Iowa; a grandchild; five stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; a stepgreat-great-grandchild; and a sister, Elsie Kain, Rock Island. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Maureen VanLerberghe.
Ray Steagall
Ray Steagall, 72, Matherville, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000.
Graveside services are 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. today at Larson Funeral Home, Milan.
Francis Vermeire
Francis P. Vermeire, 62, Annawan, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan. Father Robert Pendergast will celebrate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery , Annawan.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson. A rosary will be recited at 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home by the Sacred Heart Holy Name Society. Memorials may be left to the Francis Vermeire Memorial Fund.
Francis was born April 25, 1938, in rural Sheffield, the son of Ceriel and Ella VanBevern Vermeire. He married
Donna Long Sept. 28, 1957, in Kewanee.
Francis had been manager of Johnston Lumber Co. in Annawan for 20 years. He later was employed by United Insulated Structures Corp. in Berkley, Ill., as a construction superintendent for 14 years. He retired in 1997.
Francis was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society of the church and Laborers Union Local 309, Rock Island. He enjoyed his grandchildren and his semi-truck collection and was an avid fan of all sports, especially Annawan High School.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Geraldine Vermeire, Albuquerque, N.M., Darrell and Michele Vermeire, Lincoln, Ill., and Darwin and Tammy Vermeire, Mokena, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Brent Ahlgren, Annawan; a brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Janet Vermeire, Wyoming, Ill.; and grandchildren, Lindsay and Drew Ahlgren, Andrea and Joseph Herrera, Jairris, Jordan, Joella and Keely Vermeire, and Elliott, Emily and Aaron Vermeire.
Velma Edens
Velma L. Edens, 90, Davenport, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmount cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Runge Mortuary, Davenport.
She was born Sept. 12, 1909, in Davenport, the daughter of Herman and Alvina Stuhrman Edens.
Miss Edens had been employed by Palmer College of Chiropractic prior to retirement.
There are no known immediate survivors.
W.M. ``Bill" Eikenberry
W.M. ``Bill" Eikenberry Sr., 85, Bettendorf, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Genesis West, Davenport.
Services are 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Vera O'Haver in 1952. She died in 1992. Surviving are children, Nora, Linda, both of Bettendorf, Peg, Davenport, Marcia, Elaine, both of Michigan, Patrick, Bettendorf, Joseph, Moline, Bill Jr., Florida, John, Sherrard, James, Massachusetts, Jack, Michigan, Michael; 29 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother, Paul, Florida.

Zach Fowler, 9-year-old son of Denise Fowler and Lee Fowler, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, of injuries received in an auto accident west of Davenport.

Ray Koester
Ray D. Koester, 77, a 50-year resident of California and a former Rock Island resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, in California.
Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
He was born May 21, 1923, in Rock Island to August T. and Myrtle Taylor Koester. He married
JoAnn Askine Nov. 24, 1962, in Lakewood, Calif.
He served in the 82nd Airborne Division in the European Theatre in World War II.
He is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; his mother, Myrtle Coulson, Carson, Calif.; brothers, Ted Koester, Wilmington, Ohio, and Gerry Koester, Calamus, Iowa; and sisters, Johanna Boetger, Eldridge, Iowa, and Darlene Stifter, of Illinois.
Orville Short
Services for Orville C. Short, 84, Rock Island, are 11 a.m. Monday at Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Moline, where he was a member. Elder Paul Lindburg will officiate. Burial is in National cemetery , Rock Island.
Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Outreach International.
He died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.
He was born April 18, 1916, in Rock Island, the son of Charles and Myrtle Sanders Short. He married
Virginia Duncan Feb. 9, 1947, in Rock Island.
He was employed at Deere & Co. in the export department for 35 years until his retirement. He worked at The Rock Island Bank from 1971 to 1979. He also was a bi-vocational minister at his church. He served several terms as pastor at his church.
He was a World War II Army veteran, serving as a sergeant. He enjoyed watching baseball and reading.
Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Virginia; daughter, Mary Goding, Salina, Kan.; sons, Craig Short, Sedalia, Mo., Damon (Kathy) Short, Chicago, and Brian (Nancy) Short, Coal Valley; a sister, Velma Crandle, Moline; a niece; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
