Herman Johnson
Herman Johnson, 84, of Keokuk, died peacefully early Monday morning, April 26, 2004 in his home after battling emphysema for many years.
Herman Johnson was born
in Keokuk Graham Hospital to Herman Gustaff and Lola Brown Johnson on October 3, 1919 where his records reported his name as Baby Boy Johnson. At retirement this oversight was discovered and corrected. He served in the Army in the Aleutian Islands as a Tech Sergeant during World War II. He also served at Ft. McClellan, Alabama, where he met his wife, Ervel Juanita Tuck Johnson. They were married
October 3, 1945. She preceded him in death on June 29, 1996 where he met and married
his wife, Ervel Tuck Johnson. She preceded him in death on June 29, 1996. They traveled to Keokuk by train, which delivered them to the old Keokuk train station. Jemison Chevrolet employed Mr. Johnson for a number of years before he decided to go to work at The Keokuk Battery Company for his childhood friend, Keith Atterberg. After retiring from Keokuk Battery, he then chose to continue working at the First Baptist Church where his Jack of all trades ability was put to good use. His care and concern for church family, friends, children, and wife, and community were evident in the many extra hours he spent at church, as a deacon, and as a boy scout leader when his son was young.
Survivors include a son, Herman G. Johnson of Keokuk, Iowa; a daughter, J. Lynn Johnson of Keokuk, Iowa; two sisters, Kathryn Spiker of Argyle, Iowa and Margaret Henson of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and a brother, Virgil Johnson of Jordan, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of fifty-one years; two sisters, Jeanette Ealey of Wapello, Iowa and Dorothy Groves of Montrose, Iowa; and two brothers, George Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska and an infant brother.
Services were Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home after 2:00 P.M. with family meeting friends from 6-8 P.M.

Robert J. Jennings
Robert J. 'Herb' Jennings, 91, of Keokuk, died Sunday, August 8, 2004 at 1:39 P.M. at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.
Robert Jennings was born
on December 21, 1912 in Cora, Missouri. He was the son of Robert Henry Byrnes and Zora A. Almond Jennings. He married
Georgiana West on August 29, 1931 in Keokuk. She preceded him in death on February 25, 1988. He later married
Teresa Sinclair Brown in 1988 in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on May 18, 2000. He had been employed at the Hubinger Company for 46 years as maintenance foreman until his retirement in 1974. He liked fishing, gardening, camping, hunting, bowling, and spending time with his family and his cat, Casey.
Survivors include three children, Betty Sparrow and her husband, Gaylen, of Warsaw, Illinois, Karen Kennedy of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Sally Holtsclaw and her husband, Richard, of Hamilton, Illinois; One stepson, Charles R. Brown, of Clinton, Maryland; ten grandchildren, Kathy Beals, Pamela Gregory, William R. Walte, Joy Kirkpatrick, Jason Sparrow, Bob Kennedy, Goeffrey Todd Kennedy, Brandi Mudd, Cicily Knowles, and Whitney Holtsclaw; two step grandchildren, Maria Van Dyke and Maryanne Hare-Bennett; eleven great grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; niece, Ruth Ann Ricker, of Keokuk, Iowa; and several nephews in Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; his two wives; a daughter, Judith Moon; a granddaughter; four sisters; and one brother.
Services were Friday, August 13, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend William Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Mary V. Jefferson
Mary Veronica Jefferson, 66, of Keokuk died Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at 3:50 A.M. at her home in Keokuk.
Mary Jefferson was born
on August 22, 1938 in Keokuk. She was the daughter of Henry Red L. and Gladys Pearl Conner Guymon. She married
William Lee Jefferson on February 6, 1961 in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1996. She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and had been employed at Swift & Company. She was later employed as a nurses aid at River Hills and the Keokuk Convalescent Center. She loved working at the nursing homes because she loved helping and being around older people. She loved crocheting and her family but her biggest hobby and interest was her grandchildren. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include two sons, William Jefferson, Jr. and his friend, Kimberly Herman of Keokuk, Iowa and John L. Jefferson and his wife, Lana, of Keokuk, Iowa; three daughters, Veronica McDowell and her husband, Larry, of Keokuk, Iowa, April Linkman and her husband, Victor, of Keokuk, Iowa, and Josephine McVay of Keokuk, Iowa; two sisters, Alice Krammer of Reno, Nevada and Mary Whitledge and her husband, Walter, of Keokuk, Iowa; one brother, Ralph Bouillion of California; one half-sister, Sandra Jones, of Keokuk, Iowa; twenty grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Joanna Jefferson; and two brothers, Edward and Richard Guymon.
Services were Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Bill Hays officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk.

Josephine "Lucille" Hutcherson
Josephine 'Lucille' Hutcherson, 83, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at River Hills Village in Keokuk.
Lucille Hutcherson was born
on July 2, 1919 in Nelsonville, Missouri. She was the daughter of Silas and Bertie Bohon Hutcherson. She lived most of her life in Ft. Madison, Iowa and was employed in production for thirty-eight years at Sheaffer Pen Company. She was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include a sister, Lavada Storms and her husband, Glenn, of Huntersville, North Carolina; four nephews, Dick Hutcherson and his wife, Brenda, of Terrell, North Carolina, Ron Hutcherson and his wife, Joyce, of Denver, North Carolina, Terry Storms of Seattle, Washington, and Kevin Storms of Cornelius, North Carolina, numerous great nieces and great nephews; and extended family including Joe and Nanette Loffler of Ft. Madison, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother and his wife, Leon and Zelma Hutcherson.
Graveside services were Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk with Reverend Norman Wenig officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.
Doris V. Hyatt
Doris Vivian Hyatt, 81, of Keokuk, died Thursday, April 17, 2003 at 1:10 A.M. at the Montebello Health Care Center in Hamilton, Illinois.
Doris Hyatt was born
on April 24, 1921 in Keokuk, Iowa. She was the daughter of George and Alice F. Breitenstein Schneider. She married
Dale Hyatt on September 7, 1941 in Keokuk. He preceded her on December 5, 1992. She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and had been employed at Shellor Globe for twenty years until 1968. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She loved to sew and made clothes for herself and others.
Survivors include a son, Dale Richard Hyatt and wife, Billie Jean, of Keokuk, Iowa; a granddaughter, Bonnie Bartles and her husband, Robert, of Keokuk; two great grandsons, Michael and Cody Bartles; one great-granddaughter, Tammy Bartles; a sister, Anna Morton, of Quincy, Illinois; and a brother, Otto Schneider of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one child; four brothers; and one granddaughter, Tammy Newlon.
Services were held Monday, April 21, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend William Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation was held Sunday, April 20, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home after 4:00 P.M. with the family meeting friends from 7-9 P.M.

Michael D. Ihrer
Michael D. Ihrer, 53, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Keokuk, died at 11:22 AM Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Genesis West Hospital in Davenport.
He was born
January 29, 1951, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Charles A. and Ruth Hawley Ihrer. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He had lived in Davenport for 28 years. He was an OTR truck driver for Star Transportation and owner and operated Centennial Video Lounge. He had previously been employed by Caterpillar and Briggs. He liked working with his hands and enjoyed antiques and helping his family when needed. He did volunteer work in the Quad-Cities and was community minded. He helped raise money for charities.
He is survived by two brothers, Charles Ihrer and his wife, Janet, of Avon, Illinois and Terry Campbell of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; a sister, Barbara Lozano of Ft. Madison, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carrie Campbell.
Services and inurnment will be at a later date.

Opal F. Immegart
Opal F. Immegart, 98, of Keokuk, died Thursday, December 25, 2003 at 2:00 A.M. at River Hills Village in Keokuk.
Opal Immegart was born
on September 27, 1905 in Lorimar, Iowa. She was the daughter of David L. and Wiltamina L. Brandstetter Fuller. She married
Allan C. Immegart on December 3, 1943 in Keokuk. He preceded her on September 29, 1977. From the age of 7 to 18, she was raised in a Quakers Childrens home in Salem, Iowa. She had lived in the Keokuk area since 1943. She worked in private homes as a caregiver. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Keokuk and belonged to Royal Neighbors, Pitnion Sisters, and Rebekahs.
Survivors include a brother, Wayne Fuller, of Whittier, California; one stepson, Allan Immegart, of Bishop, California; one stepdaughter, Betty Peacock, of Lewistown, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, Virginia Peacock of Lewistown, Missouri, Robert Peacock of, Lewistown, Missouri, Larry Peacock of Kansas City, Missouri, Dorothy, Peacock of Kansas City, Missouri, Fred Peacock of Shelbina, Missouri, Hilda Launer of Warsaw, Illinois, John Harrison, Jr., of Warsaw, Illinois, Carol Hernandez of California, Carl Kiesehorst of Oregon, Diana Ter Kierst of Huntington Beach, California, and Cherlyn Bach of California; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Harold Fuller and Joseph Weyand; and three sisters, Helen Johnson, Helen Kiesehorst, and Jean Harrison.
Services were Monday, December 29, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Christian Church with Reverend Matthew Hunt officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation was Sunday, December 28, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk from 6-8 P.M. with family meeting friends during that time.
Lester Hummel
Lester Vincent Hummel, 79, of Keokuk, died at 8:33 AM Thursday, November 27, 2003, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois.
He was born
January 3, 1924 in Niota, Illinois, the son of Leon and Emily Mackie Hummel. He married
Barbara Howard on October 24, 1948 at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk, Iowa. She survives. He lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, before moving to Keokuk in 1947. He was employed in the office at Shellor-Globe and later in the laboratory at Foote-Mineral, retiring in 1985. He served in the United States Army at Ft. Lewis, Washington, during World War II.
He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ where he served as an Elder and had served on most of the church committees. He was a member of B.P.O. Elks, Lodge #106 and a former member of Keokuk Lions Club and Keokuk Jaycees. He loved to play golf and travel. He was very proud of his family including his grandchildren and his great-grandson.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Keokuk; a son, Vincent Hummel of Galesburg, Illinois; three grandchildren, Eryn Hummel and her friend, Bob, of Galesburg, Illinois, Ryan Hummel and his wife, Trina, of Galesburg, Illinois and Troy Hummel of Galesburg, Illinois; a great-grandson, Daniel Hummel of Galesburg, Illinois; a brother, Loren Hummel of Berrien Springs, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lewis Hummel.
Memorial services were held Monday, December 1, 2003 at St. Paul United Church of Christ with Rev. William Olmsted officiating. Inurnment with Military Rites followed at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Alice Herzog
Alice L. Herzog, 91, of Keokuk died Monday, September 8, 2003 at her home in Keokuk.
Alice Herzog was born
on April 3, 1912 in Kent, Iowa. She was the daughter of Fred W. and Meda L. Pfeif Peak. She married
Ernest E. Herzog on December 21, 1940 in Hannibal, Missouri. He preceded her in death on June 7, 1981. She had lived in Keokuk for seventy years. She had been employed as a secretary for forty years at Montgomery Law Offices and later employed as a clerk at Bakers Rexall Drugs. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Keokuk and the Esther Circle. She also met weekly on Mission Work Days with the church to make quilts, which were distributed, throughout the world. She volunteered for many years at the American Red Cross Bloodmobile collection sites.
Survivors include a son, Alan E. Herzog and his wife, Rita, of Keokuk, Iowa; five grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews including Kenneth Bevering of Keokuk.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Grace Murray; two stepsisters; and two stepbrothers.
Services were held Thursday, September 11, 2003 at the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk with Reverend Don Rothweiler officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Estaline L. "Vera" Hawley
Estaline LeVera 'Vera' Hawley, 78, of Keokuk, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at 3:00 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.
Vera Hawley was born
on July 18, 1926 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She was the daughter of Edward L. and Pauline Bryant Wagner. She married
Frank D. Hawley on August 21, 1948 in Ft. Madison. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1984. She had been a resident of Keokuk since 1951. She owned Hawleys Coffee Shop in the late 1960s and 1970s. She was a cook at the Arrowhead Bowl for over twenty years. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, a former member of the Eagles, and the First Baptist Church of Keokuk.
Survivors include two stepdaughters, Judy Stott and her husband, Ramo, of Keokuk, Iowa and Dorothy E. Nelson of Jacksonville, Florida; a stepson, Richard F. Hawley and his wife, Doris, of Lomax, Illinois; fourteen step-grandchildren; many great step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two step-grandchildren; three brothers; a twin sister; and a stepdaughter, Patricia Wolfe.
Services were Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Greg Busboom officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Syvilla Haskins
Syvilla Ellen Haskins, 96, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at 8:30 P.M. at her home in Keokuk, Iowa.
Syvilla Haskins was born
on January 2, 1908 in Keokuk. She was the daughter of Albert E. and Ida Ellen Hutton Keppel. She married
Joseph Haskins on March 3, 1928 in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on April 20, 1966. She had been a lifelong resident of the Keokuk and Ft. Madison area and was a homemaker. She loved walking, working in her yard, doing puzzles, and taking rides. She had attended Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Ida Haskins of Keokuk, Iowa, Dorothy Morrison and her husband, John, of Alexandria, Missouri, Joann Malloy of Kahoka, Missouri, and Sheila Clardy and her husband, Dewey, of Keokuk, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Diana Davis and her husband, Randy, Jackie Bellomy and her husband, John, Paula Hogan and her husband, Michael, Jamie Wood and her husband, Shawn, Todd Haskins and his wife, Jenny, Matt Clardy, Sheena Vaughn, and Doug Kay; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three nephews; and one niece.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister; one brother; one son; two sons-in-law; and one great-great granddaughter.
Services were Friday, April 30, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Bill Williams officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation was Thursday, April 29, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home after 2:00 P.M. with family meeting friends from 6-8 P.M.

Esther Harrison
Esther Elizabeth Harrison, 77, of Keokuk, died Saturday afternoon, November 13, 2004 in an automobile accident at her home.
She was born
November 15, 1926 in Keokuk, the daughter of Edgar and Esther Long Clinton. She marries Oscar Bob Harrison on August 1, 1946 in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on July 23, 1991.
She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and graduated from Keokuk High School in 1944. She had been employed at Sheaffer Pen, St. Joseph Hospital, Mums Flowers, and during the 2003-2004 school year she worked at Wells-Carey School. She was an active member of Sandusky United Methodist Church, Sandusky Ladies Aid and served as church treasurer. She was a member of Wells-Carey P.T.A. and Carrie Raich Circle of Kings Daughters. She was also active as a volunteer for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
She is survived by a son, Robert B.T. Harrison and his wife, Luan, of Hamilton, Illinois; two daughters, Judy Harrison of Keokuk and Sue Morgan and her husband, Joe, of Keokuk; three grandchildren, Heather Harrison Brice and her husband, Jeff, of Atlanta, Georgia, Joshua and Dylan Morgan of Keokuk; two great grandchildren, Harrison & Madison Brice of Atlanta, Georgia; a brother, Jim Clinton and his wife, Barb, of Warsaw, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Shirley Griffith of Fridley, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Peggy; a brother, Sidney Albert Griffith in 1991; two aunts and two uncles.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. John Abraham officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.
