John W. Rooney
John W. Rooney, Jr., 83 of Keokuk, died at 11:56 AM Tuesday, April 01, 2003, at his home.
He was born
May 12, 1919, Keokuk, Iowa, the son of John W. and Amy Kearnes Rooney. He married
Willa White on August 31m, 1947 in Palmyra, Missouri. She survives.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and had been employed in production at the Hubinger Company for 23 years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3508 in Keokuk.
He is survived by his wife, Willa Rooney of Keokuk; a daughter, Penny Martin and her husband, Dennis, of Keokuk; three grandchildren, Zachary, Kayla, and Kelsey Martin of Keokuk; two sisters, Enola Rowe of Keokuk and Francis Hermes of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Mildred.
Memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice or Keokuk Little League.
Marvin Wayne Lindner
Nov. 21, 1923 - June 13, 2004
Marvin Wayne Lindner, 80, of rural Keokuk, died at 4 a.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at his home on the farm which had been his familys for more than 100 years.
He was born
Nov. 21, 1923, the son of Leonora Berthold Lindner and Milton Lindner.
He married
Dorothy Nadine Bentzinger on Dec. 23, 1956. She survives.
He operated a service station for many years and later was a production manager at Sheller Globe. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Keokuk. He was an active member of the Farm Bureau, a Jackson Township Trustee, and served many years on the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 50-year member of the Elks Lodge.
Additional survivors include: two sons, Michael Lindner, of McKinney, Texas, and Douglas Lindner, and his wife, Lori, of Solon; two grandchildren, Kearce and Kale Lindner of Solon; and a sister, Miriam Lodge, and her husband, William, of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonora and Milton Lindner, and a brother, Wilbur Lindner.
His body has been cremated.
A Celebration of his Life, visitation, and inurnment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
Elizabeth E. Tiny Stedman
Nov. 24, 1937 - June 27, 2004
Elizabeth E. "Tiny" Stedman, 66, of Keokuk, died Sunday, June 27, 2004, in Keokuk Area Hospital.
She was born
Nov. 24, 1937, in Keokuk, the daughter of Russell and Alma Cady Steele.
She had been employed for 21 years as a resident care assistant at the Lee County Care Facility, which later became Eagle Summit.
She was a member of the Anchor of Hope Fellowship in Keokuk.
She enjoyed reading books and watching the daily news on television. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include: three sisters, Esther Thorn, Sandra Briggs and her husband, Robert, and Mildred Wagner and her husband Robert, all of Keokuk; a brother, Leland Steele and his wife, Robin, of Keokuk; a brother-in-law, David Salyers of Keokuk; two nephews that she considered as sons, Michael Salyers and Russell Steele, both from Keokuk; and numerous other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lois Taylor; and three brothers, Charles Steele, Russell Steele Jr. and Richard Lee Steele.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with the Rev. John Varner officiating.
Burial will be in the Buena Vista Mound Cemetery in Keokuk.
Visitation is today, with the family meeting with friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Anchor of Hope Fellowship or for headstone expense.
Joanne M. Brockman
Sept. 24, 1941 - Aug. 8, 2004
CAREFREE, Ariz. - Joanne M. Brockman, 62, Carefree, Ariz., and formerly of Keokuk, died at 12:48 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in Carefree.
She was born
Sept. 24, 1941, in Brisbane, Australia. She immigrated to the United States at the age of four and became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
She married
Ronald E. Brockman in 1963. He survives.
She attended schools in River Edge, N.J., and Highland Park, Texas. She attended Cottey Junior College and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1962 with a degree in speech pathology.
She and her husband lived in Waterloo and Tampa, Fla., before moving to Keokuk in 1971. While residing in Keokuk, she was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church where she served on the vestry, and was a member of the Episcopal Church Women.
She served on numerous local boards, including the YMCA, Visiting Nurses Association, PEO Sisterhood and Mothers Study Club. She was president of the Keokuk School Board in 1980 and 1981. She loved entertaining in her home at 1905 Grand Ave. and was well-known in Keokuk for her willingness to work and her quick wit. She left Keokuk and relocated to Phoenix where her husband was vice president of purchasing and product services for the Dial Corp.
Additional survivors include: two sons, Mathew and Michael; a granddaughter; her stepfather, George Kershaw; her mother, Alice (Peggy) Kershaw; a brother, Christopher Kershaw; and seven cousins in Australia.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Dimmok of the Australian Air Force.
Memorial services will be at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Bonham, Texas, at a later date.
Shirley I. McFerren
April 25, 1925 - Aug. 15, 2004
DONNELLSON - Shirley I. McFerren, 79, formerly of Attica, Ind., and Englewood, Fla., currently of Farmington, died at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in the Donnellson Health Center.
She was born
April 25, 1925, in Warren County, Ind., to John A. and Vivian Stephens Simpson.
She married
Harry P. McFerren on Sept. 16, 1946, in Indianapolis, Ind. He survives in Farmington.
She enjoyed golfing and bowling. She was voted "Lady Bowler of the Year" by the Ladies Bowling Association in Attica. She also was the Lady Golf Champion of the Harrison Hills Country Club in Attica many times. She was five-time lady champion of the Myakka Pines Golf Club in Englewood. She was a member of the Attica First United Methodist Church. She was a 50-year member of the West Lebanon Eastern Star.
She was a blood donor. This was her gift to society. Friends knew this and often asked for help, which she never refused. She gave to the blood bank as often as she could. Her name is listed along with others who have given gallons.
Additional survivors include: a son, Dennis McFerren and his wife, Charlene, of Farmington; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Kerkhove of Attica; two brothers, Dick Simpson and his wife, Geraldine, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Tom Simpson and his wife, Betty, of Topeka, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Graveside services will be at noon Thursday at the Riverside Cemetery in Attica, with the Rev. G. Scott Pattison officiating.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Maus Funeral Home in Attica.
The Hofbauer-Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson is in charge of local arrangements.
Pearl W. Peel
Nov. 10, 1908 - Oct. 21, 2004
WEST POINT - Pearl W. Peel, 95, of the West Point Care Center, formerly of rural Argyle, died at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, in the care center.
She was born
on Nov. 10, 1908, on the family farm north of Burlington, the daughter of Nicklas and Christine Carlson Hanson.
She married
Sam I. Peel on Aug. 27, 1927, on the family farm. He preceded her in death Jan. 27, 1972.
She had raised her family on a farm near Wever and later was a resident of the Donnellson-Argyle area. She had been a cook at the Argyle school.
She lived in Donnellson since 1982. She was a member of the Argyle Presbyterian Church.
She had driven a car for many years during her life with no violations. Her first drivers license cost 25 cents.
Survivors include: a son: Raymond Peel and his wife, Ann, of Donnellson; two daughters: Evelyn Bogert-Smith and her husband, Wayne, of Donnellson, and Virginia Riddle of Denmark.
She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Charley, John, Clarence and Russell; five sisters, Maude Barnes, Effie Brueck, Sophie Thomson, Ruth Juhl and Etta Mahannah; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Link Funeral Home, West Point, with the Revs. Jack Edmisson and Judy Holcomb officiating.
Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington.
Visitation is after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home until the time of the service.
Memorials may be made to Argyle Presbyterian Church or Donnellson First Responders.
Wayne L. Benjamin
April 5, 1920 - Oct. 20, 2004
PRIMROSE - Wayne L. Benjamin, 84, of Primrose, died at 5:17 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, in Fort Madison Community Hospital.
He was born
April 5, 1920, in Primrose, the son of Elizabeth "Lizzie" Schock and Leo Benjamin.
Local survivors include: two sisters, Doris I. Benjamin and Marjorie B. Benjamin, both of Primrose.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Ella Jones.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Hofbauer-Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson, with the Rev. Richard Bentzinger officiating.
The family will meet with friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday.
Burial will be in the Acklem Cemetery, Primrose.
A memorial has been established.
Louise Dorsey Sale
March 7, 1925 - Dec. 7, 2004
Louise Dorsey Sale, 79, of Keokuk, died at 1:59 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Lexington Square, Keokuk.
She was born
on March 7, 1925 in Bernie, Mo., the daughter of Albert and Lila May Barnes Carr.
She married
James Leroy Sale on Feb. 15, 1959, with the Rev. George Ramsey officiating the wedding ceremony. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1992.
She had lived most of her life in the Iowa-Illinois area and had been employed in production at Sheller Globe in Keokuk for 34 1/2 years. She retired in 1984.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk. She belonged to the M & M Circle and the Friendly Sunday School class.
She was a member of the Local 444 Retiree Club and the Retiree Craft Club. She was a member of the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the hospital. She was Volunteer of the Year in 2001 at KAH.
She loved her grandchildren, enjoyed helping others, and was an excellent baker.
Survivors include: two sons, Billy Dewayne Carr and his wife, Sharilyn, of Keokuk, and James E. Sale and his wife, Becky, of Keokuk; a daughter, Jean Nickel of Keokuk; a brother, A.W. "Bud" Carr of Camp Point, Ill.; three sisters, Goldie Greve of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Leranell Burke and her husband, Kenneth, also of Poplar Bluff, and Hazel Gatlin of Neelyville, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Bob Carr; five brothers; two sisters; and her stepfather.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at DeJong's Funeral Home, Keokuk, with the Rev. William Mitchell officiating.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.
Visitation is Friday at the funeral home, with the family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Keokuk or Lee County Hospice.
