Vera M. Hining
Vera Mae Hining, 85, of Floris, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas.
She was born
Feb. 21, 1918, in rural Davis County to Reo Paul and Ruby Mae Hill Hastings. She married
Dale Eugene Hining May 31, 1936, in Fairfield. He died July 20, 1998.
She was a life long resident of Davis County and a homemaker.
She is survived by her son Dennis Hining of Houston, Texas; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister Neta Plum and two brothers, Paul and Crete Hastings.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Henkenius-Priester Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Wakelin officiating. Burial will be in the Floris Cemetery.
Visitation will be open after 9 a.m. Thursday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.
A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society in her name.
Clara Law
Clara Ann Law, 95, of Troy, died April 4, 2003, at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield.
She was born
Jan. 12, 1908, in Van Buren County to James H. and Ella L. Brooks Zeitler. She married
Leo H. Law on Nov. 26, 1924, in Van Buren County. He died May 8, 1965.
A resident of Davis County most of her life, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Troy United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Troy Quilters.
She is survived by three daughters, Lillian Ritz of Bloomfield, Iva Dell Roberts and Lovetta Jarvis, both of Troy; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; three great great grandchildren and a sister, Ada Lazenby of Keosauqua.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Richard Law; a granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Asa, George, J. Edwin and Roe Zeitler and a sister, Sarah Bowman.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Mary Horras officiating. Burial will be in the Troy Cemetery in Troy. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established to Hospice, Inc.
Colleen Tharp
Colleen B. Tharp, 78, of Bloomfield, died May 27, 2003, at the Bloomfield Care Center.
She was born
July 21, 1924, in Boone to Archie and Irene Lindholm Tilley. She married
Max Carroll Tharp Jan. 14, 1946, in Des Moines. He died Jan. 3, 1993.
She was a legal secretary and homemaker and had been a resident of Davis County since 1991. She was a member of the Monterey Christian Church and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by a son Michael Tharp of McAllen, Texas, and a granddaughter.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother Pat Tilley.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home with the Rev. Reg Higginbottom officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset View Cemetery in Moulton.
Visitation will begin a 9 a.m. Friday with the family present from 7-8 p.m.
A memorial has been established to the Monterey Christian Church.
Mary Nelson
Mary Elizabeth Nelson, 75, Bloomfield, died May 27, 2003, at her home in Bloomfield.
She was born
Sept. 28, 1927, in Bloomfield to Glen and Ruth Weede Gandy. She married
Terry Nelson on Jan. 11, 1979, in Sitka, Alaska. They moved back to Bloomfield in October of 1993.
She was a homemaker and had been a hotel desk clerk in Alaska. She was a member of the Elks Lodge in Sitka, Alaska.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Charlotte Oneil of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Pat Brindza of Overland, Mo.; a step-daughter, Cheryle Taylor of Eugene, Ore.; a stepson, Jeffrey Nelson of Milwaukee, Wis.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Sullivan of Sun Lakes, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Betty Gandy and Pauline Locker; and a brother, William Gandy.
The body was cremated. No visitation or services are planned. The cremains will be scattered later in Sitka, Alaska.
Memorials have been established to the Davis County Dollars for Scholars and the Friends of the Bloomfield Public Library. They may be sent to her family at 206 S. Howard St., Bloomfield.
The Wagler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Lois Speer
Lois M. Speer, 83, Bloomfield, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at her home.
She was born
Nov. 4, 1919, in Davis County to Walter and Ruth Garmon Rullman. She married
Ethridge E. Speer on July 19, 1939, in Lancaster, Mo., He died Oct. 25, 1982.
A resident of Davis County most of her life, she was a homemaker and had worked at Nockonwood and BIMCO in Bloomfield. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in California and was a Gold Star Mother.
She is survived by two sons, Jerry Speer of Bloomfield and Jack Zugg of Moulton; two daughters, Beverly Stober of Bloomfield and Linda Rysdam of Milton; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson; three brothers, George Rullman of Danville, Wis.; Lloyd Rullman of Claremont, Calif.; and two sisters, Bernadine Argo of Ottumwa and Mary Horn of Lake Charles, La.
She was preceded death by her parents; her husband; a son, James Speer; five brothers, John, Charles, Bill, Gene and Glen Rullman; and a sister, Fern Jones.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, conducted by the Rev. Gordon Hawkins. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.

Pauline Ritz
Anna Pauline Ritz, 91, formerly of 505 S. Pine, Bloomfield, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at the Bloomfield Care Center.
She was born
Feb. 22, 1912 near Troy to Jesse D. and Verena M. Glattfelder McNabb. She married
William Demar Ritz on Nov. 7, 1933, at Floris. He died Dec. 27, 1999.
She was a life long resident of Davis County and lived in Bloomfield for 66 years. She was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church and the Christian Woman's Fellowship.
She and Grace Miller started the first lunch program in the Bloomfield Elementary school and worked with it for six years.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary M. Abdin of Olathe, Kan., and Jeani Leyda of Bloomfield; 10 grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Dorothy I. Koffman; a great-grandson; a sister, Ruth I Ritz and four brothers, Bernie L., Earl E. Glen E. and Kenneth L McNabb.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Henkenius-Priester Funeral Home with the Rev. James Wakelin. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.
Visitation will be open after 9 a.m. Friday and the family will be present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.
A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield Christian Church Scholarship Fund.
Donald (Jack) Funk
Donald A. (Jack) Funk, 71, Bloomfield, died Monday, July 23, 2003, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born
Nov. 24, 1931, in Hurdland, Mo., to Roy L. and Essie Marie Kaylor Funk. He married
Ethel Knaack on Jan. 31, 1952, in Brashear, Mo. she died July 26, 1991.
He had been a resident of Davis County for 44 years and retired from John Deere in 1991.
He is survived by a son, Donald R. Funk of Bloomfield; two daughters, Debra Johnson and Billie Cruikshank, both of Bloomfield; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Funk of Hurdland, Mo., and Henry Funk of Lancaster, Mo.; and a sister, Mary Miller of Chicago, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two brothers, Roy and Paul Funk.
Graveside services will be at 10.m. Friday at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield with the David Albert officiating. Open visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Wagler Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to the Davis County Little League.
Darlene Shirley
Darlene Glee Shirley, 84, of Bloomfield, died July 28, 2003, at her home.
She was born
December 17, 1918, in Drakesville, to Harvey and Mable Morse Ross. She married
Harl Holt September 25, 1937, in Washington. He died April 4, 1966. She married
Alec Shirley June 2, 1975, in Lancaster, Mo. He died February 20, 1988.
A resident of Davis and Van Buren counties her lifetime, she was a licensed practical nurse at the Davis County Hospital, retiring in 1979. She was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Davis County Historical Society, Davis County Hospital Auxiliary and the Welcome Center in Bloomfield.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Stephen Holt of Redfield; a daughter Vicki Kinnamon of Bloomfield; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter and a sister, Maxine Segina of West Mifflin, Penn.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jane Ann Wells; a brother, Curtis Ross and a sister, Irene Thayer.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wagler Funeral Home with the Rev. James H. Wakelin officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton.
Open visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Wagler Funeral Home.

Leola Hubbartt
Leola A. Hubbartt, 96, of Bloomfield, died July 26, 2003, at the Bloomfield Care Center.
She was born
in Davis County to Duff and Susie (Meier) Rayburn and spent her whole life there. She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1925 and continued her education at Iowa Southern Normal Training.
She married
Floyd O. Hubbartt on April 20, 1927; he preceded her in death. She taught school in rural Davis County for many years before becoming a teacher's aide in the Bloomfield Schools. She was a member of Retired Teacher's Association, Hook and Needle, Bloomfield Rebekah Lodge #1 (past noble grand), an 80-year member of the Bloomfield Christian Church and taught Sunday school there for 40 years.
She is survived by four sons, Glenn Dean of Lincoln, Nebr., Bill of Ottumwa, Bob of Arroyo Grand, Calif. and Richard Hubbartt of Bloomfield; two daughters, Kay Hopkins of Drakesville and Sue Comer of Floris; one sister Gwen Howard of Newburg, Ore.; one brother Gale Rayburn of New London; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; four sisters, Creta Harris, Bessie Morton, Helen McKeag, Joan Christine Rayburn and one brother Floyd Rayburn.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 30, at Priester Chapel in Bloomfield with the Rev. James Wakelin officiating. Burial will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Bloomfield.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 29, from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Priester Chapel with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield Christian Church and may be dropped off at the Priester Chapel.
