HAROLD VAUGHN 74, of Albia, Iowa, formerly of Anthon, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Oakwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Albia. Services: Friday, December 10, 2004 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Burial: in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, with military rites conducted by the American Legion McNiff Post #389 of Anthon. The son of Elbert and Mabel Vaughn of Anthon, Harold was born
on January 10, 1930. He attended country school in Miller Township as well as Anthon Public School. He attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where he graduated with honors. H also served four years in the U. S. Army. Following his discharge from the military Harold made his home in Washington and Oregon where he worked for Weyerhaeuser Paper & Lumber Company for many years. After a serious work injury, he returned to Anthon where he resided with his parents. Later Harold was admitted to the Veteran's Hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he resided. He later moved to Oakwood Nursing Home where he lived until his death. Harold enjoyed his family and was a Christian man.He was always cheerful and a care-giver for his fellow roommates at the hospital. He is survived by one brother Robert of Des Moines; a sister, Dorothy Bochardt of Sioux City, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother Walter Vaughn of Correctionville.
HELMA ARLENE KRUEGER 78, of Kingsley and formerly of the Oto, and Anthon area passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer. December 11, 1925, rural Danbury, Iowa, to Henry and Johanna Scheer. She was raised on a farm east of Oto and later east of Anthon with a large loving family and was very proud of the respect that they had for each other and their parents. On March 14, 1945 she was united in marriage to Donald Krueger in Sioux City.They farmed near Oto, Iowa, Correctionville, Iowa, and near Pierson, Iowa. The couple moved to Kingsley after retiring, where Helma took great pride in caring for the Kingsley Community Center for many years and sharing special times with their retired farm friends, Melvin and Phyllis Monke. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans and planting beautiful flowers. She always enjoyed preparing large holiday meals for her family which always included her siblings and their families as well as her own children and their families. When gatherings occurred most of the time was spent in her kitchen tasting her treats and having the kindness of her companionship. She was very proud of her family, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was an active member of United Methodist Church, where she participated in Eve's Circle. She is survived by her husband, Don of Kingsley; two daughters, Donna and her husband, Ronnie Christophersen of Climbing Hill, Iowa, and Brenda Sargisson of Kingsley; a son and his wife, Randy and Nancy Krueger of Sioux City; a brother, Alfred Scheer of Correctionville, Iowa; two sisters, Lorraine Scheer of Correctionville and Maizel Buettner of Anthon, Iowa; two grandsons and their wives, Terry and Jenny Christophersen and Nathan and Kelly Sargisson; three granddaughters and their husbands, Kim and Steve Steffen, Jenny and Mark Vos and Nicole and Kirk Lindgren; and 11 great-grandchildren, Matthew and Malakie Christophersen, Sidney and Jacob Steffen, Brooke, Hanna and Grace Vos, Grant and Jake Sargisson and Max and Dexter Lindgren, and nieces and nephews who will all greatly miss her. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Henry, Vern, Lester, Arlo, Aldre and Edwin; two sisters, Sylvia and Alverta; and an infant daughter, Marcia.
MATILDA E. SANDS 100, of Correctionville, Iowa passed away Tuesday November 16, 2004. Services were held Saturday, November 20, 2004 at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, Iowa. Burial; Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Matilda Elsie was born
April 16, 1904 to Fritz and Bertha (Burow) Roggatz in Morgan Township, Woodbury County, Iowa. She grew up and attended school in the area as well. On August 8, 1921 she was united in marriage to Elmer Floyd Sands at Ida Grove, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Danbury, Correctionville, and Anthon, Iowa areas. They retired to Correctionville in 1970. Elmer passed away February 19, 1987. "Tillie" was a member of the Methodist Church at Anthon and a past member of the United Methodist Women. Survivors include five daughters; Mildred Moore and Dorothy Parker, both of Anthon, Pearl and husband LeRoy Schwanz of Storm Lake, Laura and husband Walter Williams of Sioux City, and Louise and husband Jim Gaines of Casper, Wyoming; one son and his wife, Arnold and June Sands of Correctionville; one son-in-law, Virgil Colshan of Cushing, Iowa, 33 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one daughter, Ruby Colshan, and one son, Darrell Sands, three brothers, five sisters, and a great granddaughter.
ELTON LEON BREWER, 81, of Pierson died on Monday, November 15, 2004, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. July 29, 1923, in Holton, Kan., to Harold and Retta (McDaniel) Brewer. He graduated from Fort Scott High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for seven months before being discharged due to health reasons. He then attended Fort Scott Community College for two years. He taught rural school and farmed with his father for some time before he moved to Omaha, where he met Shirley Mizer. They were married
on July 23, 1955. He worked at NAMCO for many years. The couple was blessed with eight children. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Shirley of Pierson; a daughter and her husband, Melody and Alan Morse of Odessa, Mo. and their three children, a daughter and her husband, Lynn and Gary Patterson of Cummings, Kan. and their three children; a son and his wife, Paul and Terri Brewer of Corbett, Ore., and their four children; a son and his wife, Tim and Julie Brewer of Nevada, Mo. and their two daughters; a daughter and her husband, Sharon and John Goetz of Correctionville; a son and his wife, Dan and Deb Brewer of Monmouth, Ore. and their six children; a daughter and her husband, Amy and Travis Burk of Gresham, Ore. and their daughter; a son and his wife, Steve and Tiffon Brewer of Pierson and their son; two sisters, Alma Green of Anthon, Iowa, and Tillie Lucke of Dallas, Texas; and two sisters-in-law, Clara Brewer of Fort Scott, Kan., and Doris Brewer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ivan, Harold and his wife, Loretta, and Bill; and a granddaughter, Grace Brewer.
FLORENCE EDGINGTON, 81, of Mapleton passed away on Monday, November 15, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital. June 26, 1923, on a farm near Oto, Iowa, to Earl and Celia (Metcalf) Callaghan. She graduated from Climbing Hill (Iowa) High School in 1941. On July 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to Byron Edgington at St. John's Evangelical Church, German City, Iowa. They moved to a farm near Mapleton and lived there until retiring to Mapleton 1981. They enjoyed camping and spent more than 25 years wintering in Texas. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Byron; a son and his wife, Don and Pat Edgington of Mapleton; a daughter and her husband, Judy and Tom Schleis of Fremont, Neb.; six grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Roberta Edgington and Betty Callaghan, both of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Celia Callaghan; and three brothers, Orval, Ray and Glen Callaghan.
BETTY JEAN DOWNING, 78, of Smithland passed away on Monday, November 15, 2004, at Casa de Paz Nursing Home in Sioux City from complications of diabetes. Dec. 27, 1925, in Beloit, Wis., the daughter of Leo Charles and Meda Marie (Cantwell) Hirst. Her father was in the U.S. Navy, which resulted in the family moving several times. On Nov. 4, 1946, she married
Paul Downing in Sioux City. The couple lived in Long Beach, Calif. for 20 years. Betty was employed as a cook at the Lafayette Hotel while living there. In 1963, the couple moved back to Smithland and she ran Quality Upholstery in Sioux City until 1981. Paul died August 4, 1978. She moved into Maple Crest Apartments in Mapleton, Iowa, in 1995. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Henry McKenna Unit #651 of Oto. Survivors include two sons, John Charles Hirst of Erlanger, Kentucky, and Paul D. Downing and his wife, Margaret, of Oto; one daughter, Sally Downing and Darrell Johns of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lee Hirst of Missouri; and a sister, Marjorie Powers of Fontana, Calif. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers.
JOHN H. KETELSEN, 66, of Battle Creek, Iowa and formerly of Anthon passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2004. John Hans Ketelsen was the son of Jens and Viva (Parker) Ketelsen and was born
near Anthon on February 23, 1938. He attended country school and Anthon Community High School, graduating in 1956. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam, being discharged from the service in 1961. On June 1, 1962 he was united in marriage to Sharon Bollmeyer in Anthon. Sharon passed away on August 1, 1986. He retired from Wilson Food in Cherokee where he worked for 30 years, then worked for Anderson Construction until 2001 when he and his brother Mike started their own business. John was an active member of AA for 16 years and held many offices with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union #179. He was also a member of the American Legion. John enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as working with small motors. Survivors include his children; Jeff and his wife Dawn of Battle Creek, David and his wife Terri of Sioux City, Chris of Correctionville, and Michelle Ketelsen of Correctionville; grandchildren, brothers, Chris and his wife Marry of Anthon, and Mike and his wife Elaine Ketelsen of Lawton as well as brothers-in-law Gary and Becky Bollmeyer of Correctionville, Ron and Deb Bollmeyer of Gilmore City, Iowa and Phillip Sanderson of Moville, Iowa. John was preceded in death by his wife Sharon, his parents, and two sisters, Tina King and Lucy Sanderson.
LEO WEATHERS, 80, a former Anthon resident died on Saturday October 30, 2004 in Elkhorn, Nebraska. Services were in Omaha and graveside services held on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa. June 17, 1924 near Anthon and lived on the family farm until he left in 1954 to become a Benedictine brother at Conception Abbey in Conception, Missouri. He learned mechanical and electrical trades before moving to Mount Michael Abbey in Elkhorn in June of 1959. He made his home in California beginning in 1969 and returned to Nebraska in 1983. He is survived by a brother and his wife, Frank and Delores Weathers of Omaha, a sister and her husband, Mary and Walter Huber of Fremont, Nebraska as well as nieces and nephews. February 3, 1917, on a farm, rural Correctionville, Iowa. She was born
to Henry and Mabel (Keller) Rath Jr. Margaret attended country school and graduated from Correctionville High School. She took normal training and taught country school for four years. On December 12, 1937, Margaret and Ray E. Fixsel were married
at Pierson, Iowa, in the home of Ray's sister and brother-in-law; Pat and Ada Denlinger. Ray and Margaret lived, farmed, and raised their family northwest of Anthon, Iowa. They were members of the Rock Branch United Methodist Church. Ray passed away in May of 1983 after being married
for 45 years. Margaret remained on the farm until May of 1993, when she moved in to Correctionville. She entered Valley Lodge Assisted Living there in December 2002 and the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in October 2003. She enjoyed working at Brown's Grocery Store when she was younger. She enjoyed dancing, golfing, playing cards, volunteering at the Senior Center, gardening and visiting her family and friends. Survivors include three sons and their wives, Larry and Linda of Anthon, Iowa, Ronald and Judy of Lawton, Iowa, and Dennis and Jane of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne Rath of Correctionville and Vernon Rath and his wife, Loretta of Aurelia, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Blanche McLeish; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Rath
LENA EMMA MEYER, 95 of Anthon passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at a Sioux City hospital. Services: Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Anthon with Father Terry Roder officiating. Burial in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa. Lena was born
on February 14, 1909 at Moville, Iowa to Charley and Emma (Clausen) Deming. Her mother died when she was only 2 years old and Lena and her brother Art Deming were then raised by her maternal grandparents, Henry and Catherine (Grimsman) Clausen. Lena was educated and grew up in the Rock Branch, Moville, and Sergeant Bluff, Iowa areas. She married
Bernard Meyer in Salix, Iowa on July 2, 1927. They made their home at rural Anthon, and in 1970 moved into Anthon when they retired from farming. Bernard passed away on May 20, 1973. Lena was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Alter Society, Catholic Daughters of America 1602 and was also a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, McNiff Unit #389. Lena always held important offices, some for many years, in any organization she belonged to. She was a well respected leader and member of the American Legion Auxiliary locally, as well as at the county and district levels. She will be sorely missed by the many lives she touched over the years. Her respect and loyalty of all United States Veterans was very humbling, gratifying and touching. She was also a member of the Community Club as well as serving as site manager of the government commodities program locally from 1982 until that closed in 1995. She also wrote many verses and articles for the local newspaper for several years. Survivors include four daughters; Evelyn Ketelsen of Lawton, Iowa; Bernadine Norris of Anthon, Joyce and husband Ludy Dekok of Tucson, Arizona and Mary Ann Brubaker of Sioux City, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Meyer of Anthon; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and two half-sisters, Marge Erickson of Wisconsin, and Evelyn Daniel of Phoenix, Arizona. Lena was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Francis Meyer; two grandchildren, a brother, Art Deming; two half brothers, Russell and Amos Deming; and three sons-in-law, Chris Ketelsen, Raymond Downey, and David Brubaker.

Leland Case in Luverne, Minnesota and the couple made their home in Sioux City. Her husband Leland passed away in 1983. Leona enjoyed working with crafts and spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Saundra Lee and Richard Farrell of Florida and two sons, Mike of Sioux City and Greg and his wife Geri of Sioux City, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving Leona is a sister and her husband, Marlene and Les Crum of North Sioux City, South Dakota; two brothers, Herman Schmidt and wife Virginia and Wallace "Buzz" Schmidt and his special friend Sylvia Alter all of Sioux City. Leona was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Elton and Lyle Schmidt; and a sister, Charlotte Wilde.
