Maxine Ferguson
Maxine Ferguson, 94 of New Sharon passed Friday, August 19, 2011 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Home with Pastor Terry Pollard of the New Sharon United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Monday, August 22, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Interment will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the New Sharon Fire and Rescue or the North Mahaska School.
Maxine Ferguson, daughter of Walter and Emma (Leatherman) Dunwoody was born
on April 8, 1917 in rural New Sharon. She was a 1934 graduate of New Sharon High School. On June 22, 1935, Maxine was united in marriage to Bennie Ferguson in Lancaster, Missouri. To this union two children were born, Jerry and Janet. Together they farmed in the Union Mills area. Maxine was a typical farmer’s wife. She raised the children and took care of the home. After Bennie’s death in 1964, Maxine kept the farm going with the help of her son, Jerry. During this time, Maxine also worked at Fisher’s Grocery Store in New Sharon. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and embroidering. Maxine also enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing cards and above all her family. She was a member of Prairie Knolls Country Club, New Sharon United Methodist Church and the Christian Women Fellowship.
Her memory will be cherished by her daughter, Janet (Roger) Holm of Leonard, Minnesota; her daughter-in-law, Gayle Ferguson of New Sharon; six grandchildren, Brett (Carrie) Ferguson, Kent (Renee) Ferguson, Ben (Cara) Ferguson, Mindy (Bruce) Tokle, Jason Holm and Scott Holm; thirteen great grandchildren and two sisters, Bonnie (Vernon) Northcutt of Oskaloosa and Beverly Klein of New Sharon.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bennie Ferguson in 1964; a son, Jerry Ferguson; a brother and sister-in-law, Lowell (Millie) Dunwoody; four sisters, and brothers-in-law, Jacquetta (John) Jarard, Wilma (Afton) Swisher, Betty (Maurice) Groves and Floydine Dunwoody and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Klein.
Barbara Jo Ann Adkins

Barbara Adkins, 81 of Grinnell and formerly of New Sharon passed away Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am Friday, August 5, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Home with Pastor David Pinkerton officiating. Visitation will begin after 11:00 am on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will be held in the Highland Cemetery in New Sharon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be in the family’s name.
Barbara Jo Ann Adkins, daughter of Howard and Opal (Mateer) Beach was born
on April 19, 1930 in Barnes City. She graduated from Barnes City High School in 1948. On September 24, 1948, she was united in marriage to Arnold Adkins in New Sharon. To this union one daughter was born, Mary. Barbara was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family. She loved visiting her family and spending time with her grandchildren. Barbara also enjoyed Bingo, Canasta, her cats, nursing home crafts and folding towels at the nursing home.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Brad) Crosby of New Sharon; three grandchildren, Steven (Meagan) Crosby of New Sharon, Ashley Crosby of New Sharon and Alicia Crosby of New Sharon; a brother, Claire (Jo Ann) Beach of Nebraska; a sister, Betty (Paul) Rotenberry and a sister-in-law, Orbelle Beach of Florida.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold Adkins and a brother, Kenneth Beach.
Richard Gillett Dalziel
(September 4, 1927 - May 24, 2011)
Richard Dalziel, 83, of What Cheer, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery at What Cheer. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday; family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the What Cheer Fire & Rescue, Keokuk County Hospice or the What Cheer Christian Church.
Richard Gillett Dalziel was born
in Des Moines, Iowa on September 4, 1927 to William Arthur and Gertrude Gillett Dalziel. He was raised on his mother's parent's farm west of What Cheer. Richard was a 1946 graduate of What Cheer High School. On December 30, 1948, Richard was united in marriage to Phyllis Eileen Stephen in Lancaster, MO. He remained on his family's "Century Farm" for the rest of his life. In addition to farming, he worked for What Cheer Clay Products where he was a boiler operator and a night watchman. Richard also worked construction where he ran a cement saw and was a heavy equipment operator. He helped build Interstate 80 around the Brooklyn exchange as well as the Red Rock Dam. Later Richard worked at the University of Iowa Hospital in House Keeping until he retired in 1989. He enjoyed his family, cars, motorcycles, hunting and fishing.
Richard is survived by his wife Phyllis, two sons: James (Rita) Dalziel and Rodney Dalziel both of What Cheer; three daughters: Sandra George of What Cheer, Debra (Larry) Swink of Ladora and Sharon (Kenneth) Mercer of What Cheer. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Arthur and Rachel Dalziel, Alexandria Dalziel, Lianna Dalziel, Jamie and Betsy Banks-George, Jennifer and Mike Pacheco, Jessica and Andy Gibbons, Kimberly Mercer and Eric and Carrie Mercer. Richard was also blessed with twelve great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Sheryl (Doug) Clark of Little Rock, AR; two sisters-in-law, Betty Smith of Oskaloosa and Shirley (Dennis) Metzer of Tampa, FL and a brother-in-law Keith Stephen of Newton.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Gertrude Dalziel; a sister Marilyn Louise; son-in-law, John R. George; paternal grandparents, James and Mary Dalziel; maternal grandparents, Elbert and Phoebe Heston Gillett.
Randy Lynn Stephenson
(May 13, 1956 - August 11, 2011)
Randy Stephenson, 55 of Montezuma and formerly of What Cheer died peacefully August 11, 2011 in his sleep after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. A luncheon will be held at Thomas Hall, located on the Keokuk County Fairgrounds following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
Randy Lynn Stephenson was born
on May 13, 1956 at the Sigourney Hospital, the son of Anita Kay Carmer (Biggs) and Howard Stephenson. Randy worked many years as a heavy equipment operator and in his spare time he enjoyed being with his family and friends.
Randy is survived by his mother Kay Biggs of What Cheer, brother Tom (Doneta) Stephenson of Keswick, Iowa, his children Shane Stephenson of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Joe Stephenson of Grinnell, Iowa, and Nikki Stephenson of Montezuma, Iowa; his six grandchildren Lillian, Lexis and Lyvia Stephenson, Caden and Aubree Campbell and Kya Hobbs, and other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother Ada White, Stepfather Al Biggs, Uncle Don Carmer and two cousins, Bob Boss and Terry Carmer.
Larry Lee Van Devender

Larry Van Devender, 66, of What Cheer, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 27, 2011 in Lawton, Oklahoma. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. Larry Lee Van Devender was born
December 19, 1944 in Ames, Iowa the son of Juddie and Virginia Clemens Van Devender. He was a 1962 graduate of the Spickard High School in Spickard, MO. On October 3, 1964 Larry was united in marriage to Linda Sue Rea at the United Methodist Church in What Cheer. Then in 1966 Larry joined the United States Navy where he served as a medic in the D Company of the 1st Medical Battalion for the 1st Marine Division during Vietnam. He began driving truck in 1993 and continued his working career as a Truck Driver until the present time. At first impression, Larry may have seemed “Gruff”. But to those who knew him, he was just a kind hearted teddy bear. Above all family was the most important to Larry. He always looked forward to weekends when he could teach woodworking to his grandsons Keegan and Dalton. He will be remembered as a man who gave unconditional love to his family and friends.
Larry is preceded in death by his parent.
He is survived by his wife Linda of What Cheer, two sons; Dan (Jennifer) Van Devender of Oskaloosa and Slate Sweat of Provo, UT; a daughter, Tami (Dan) Tish of Brooklyn; a brother, Ferrell (Janice) Van Devender of Spickard, MO and a sister Linda Kay Gerard(Melvin Simpson) of Victor. Larry’s life was also blessed with seven grandchildren: Keegan, Dalton, Macie, Kiersten, Dawson, Kiah and Ty.
Mary Elizabeth Stewart
(January 4, 1921 - June 27, 2011)
Mary Stewart, 90, of Oskaloosa, formerly of New Sharon, died Monday, June 27, 2011 at the Oskaloosa Care Center. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 1, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon. Visitaion will be held Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Lynnville.
Mary Elizabeth Stewart was born
January 4, 1921 near Lynnville, Iowa the daughter of Gerrit and Gertie Slycord Beyer. She attended country school near Lynnville and on June 4, 1940 was united in marriage to William Stewart in Sully. Over the years Mary raised and showed registered quarter horses as well as a twenty year career with Maytag. She was a member of the New Harvest Community Church where she enjoyed meeting with the Bible Study group. Mary also enjoyed attending harness races in What Cheer and coffee time with her friends at Donna's cafe. She will be remembered as an excellent cook and a woman with a tremendous work ethic.
Mary is survived by a son Larry Stewart of Colfax, two daughters, Pheryl Stewart and Nancy (Roger) Pothoven both of New Sharon; two brothers, Charly Beyer and Carrol (Mary Lou) Beyer both of Sully; a sister, Arlen (Lloyd) Brand of Sully; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill and a sister Dorothy Van Zee.
Rayford Roscoe Ratcliff
(November 28, 1917 - June 15, 2011)

Rayford Ratcliff, 93 of New Sharon passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm Friday, June 17, 2011 at the New Sharon United Methodist Church with Reverend John Battern and Reverend Tom Palmer officiating. Visitation will begin after 3:00 pm Thursday, June 16, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Safe Water International Ministries or Friends of Neil Smith National Wildlife Refuge. Harden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Rayford Roscoe Ratcliff, son of Harold and Charlotte (Groves) Ratcliff was born
on November 28, 1917 in rural New Sharon. He was a 1937 graduate of Lynnville High School. After high school, Rayford helped on the family farm until he was drafted in the United States Army on October 20, 1942. Rayford was honorably discharged on December 27, 1944. On October 12, 1946, Rayford was united in marriage to Eleanora Jones at the Richland Friends Church. To this union four children were born, Martha, Harlan, Earl and Carl. Rayford was a great carpenter. He opened the Cozy Inn Manufacturing in Lynnville in the late 1950’s, moving the business to New Sharon in 1964. His passion was making church pews and church furniture. Rayford was a member of the Friends Church and later attended the New Sharon United Methodist Church.
His memory is honored by his four children, Martha Kroese of Cedar Falls, Harlan (Pat) Ratcliff of Dallas Center, Earl (Margaret) Ratcliff of New Sharon and Carl (Janet) Ratcliff of Valley, Nebraska; his seven grandchildren, Darina Ratcliff, Max Ratcliff, Eric Ratcliff, Tom (Abigail) Hillers, Mindy (Matt) Icenbice, Molly Ratcliff and John Ratcliff; three great grandchildren, Jason Icenbice, Dutch Hillers and Madilyn Icenbice; a brother, Melvin Ratcliff of Lynnville and three sisters, Velma Sparks of Grinnell, Alice Sparks of Lynnville and Vera Beason of Grinnell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Charlotte Ratcliff; his wife, Eleanora Ratcliff on November 23, 2009; two sisters, Doris Ann Fenner and Neva Klyn and a son-in-law, Terry Kroese.
Carol Ann Van Doorn

Carol Van Doorn, 72 of New Sharon was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at the Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 pm Thursday, June 16, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon. Visitation will begin after noon on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment will be held in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. Memorials may be sent to the family to be directed to PALS.
Carol Ann Van Doorn, daughter of Bert and Mildred (Chilcote) Terrell was born
on December 18, 1938 in Truax, Iowa. She was a 1957 graduate of Eddyville High School. On March 20, 1960, Carol was united in marriage to Richard Van Doorn in Eddyville. To this union one daughter was born
Dalene. Carol worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aide at Mahaska Hospital for two years and Grinnell General Hospital for five years. She enjoyed reading, puzzles and above all spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Van Doorn of New Sharon; her daughter, Dalene (Everett) Werner of Tama; two grandchildren, Richelle and Larry Werner of Tama; a sister, Florence Stalker of Boone; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Mildred Terrell; a brother, Leroy Terrell and a sister, Marjorie Hootman.
Lenice Willette Walsh
(March 11, 1915 - June 2, 2011)
Lenice Walsh, 96 of Oskaloosa formerly of New Sharon and Barnes City passed away Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the New Sharon First Christian Church with Pastor Phil DeBoef officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held in the Barnes City Cemetery in Barnes City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church or Care Initiatives Hospice.
Lenice Willette Walsh, daughter of James William and Laura Edith (Thomas) Allen was born
on March 11, 1915 in rural Searsboro, Iowa. She was a 1934 graduate of Barnes City High School. On February 20, 1935, Lenice was united in marriage to Irvin Franklin Walsh in Oskaloosa. Lenice was the Barnes City Town Clerk for a few years. They farmed in the Barnes City area until moving into town to operate a radiator shop in 1965. In 1970, Irvin and Lenice moved to Tucson, Arizona where they enjoyed their retirement years. After Irvin’s death, she moved back to New Sharon where she enjoyed being around family and friends. Lenice was a member of the New Sharon First Christian Church where she was very active. She belonged to the church choir, Vantastics, the Loyal Daughters and she served as a Deaconess.
She is survived by sisters-in-law, Lavon Walsh of Montezuma, Ruth Walsh of Cedar Rapids, Mildred Allen of Oskaloosa and Janice Jones of Belton, MO; a brother-in-law, Eddie (Marge) Walsh of Tucson, Arizona; several nieces, nephews, special friends, Bill and Patty Patterson and her family at the Northern Mahaska Nursing Home and Care Initiatives Hospice.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Irvin Walsh, five brothers, Ivyl, Orville, Afton, Clitus and Cyril and two sisters, Cleora Johnston and Zola Allen.
Dennis Carl Hartwig

Dennis Hartwig, 62, of What Cheer died Friday, May 13, 2011. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 16, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta. Military honors will be conducted by the James Murphy American Legion Post #319. Visitation will begin at noon on Sunday, family present Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Dennis Carl Hartwig was born
March 23, 1949 in What Cheer, Iowa the son of Carl and Roberta (Walker) Hartwig. After attending Tri-County High School he enlisted in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge Dennis returned home and later married
Vicky Koch on October 23, 1971 at the Baptist Church in What Cheer. Throughout the years Dennis has worked for various companies as a Truck Driver. In 1987 he became a member of the What Cheer Fire Department where for over twenty four years he committed himself to the cause. Over time he gained the respect of his peers and was elected Fire Chief. He held the position until his health began to fail. Volunteer work was important to Dennis. He took a great deal of pride helping who ever, whenever and however he could. Dennis also coached Little League and served as both Girl Scout and Boy Scout Leaders. He was a former member of the Keokuk County Fair Board and the What Cheer Lions Club. Dennis enjoyed an outdoors life style. Especially the beauty this world has to offer that only an outdoorsmen would understand.
Dennis is preceded in death by his mother, Roberta Hartwig; an infant sister and an uncle, Herman Hartwig.
His legacy will be cherished by his wife Vicky, a son William D. Hartwig of New Sharon; a daughter, Michelle Ver Steegh of Oskaloosa; his father, Carl Hartwig of What Cheer; his sister and her husband, Donna and Gary Kempf of What Cheer and seven grandchildren: Stephanishia, Ashton, Lilyann, Jordan, Victoria, Patricia and Garrett.
