Jessie Ann Ridgeway
(April 23, 1921 - February 7, 2013)

Funeral services for Jessie Ridgeway, 91, of What Cheer will begin at 10:30 am on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday with family present from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery at What Cheer. Memorial Contributions may be made to the family.

Jessie Ann Ridgeway was born icon in What Cheer, Iowa on April 23, 1921 the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Leonard Kelley. After high school she attended college and received her teaching certificate. Later she returned home where she taught in country school east of What Cheer for three years. On August 29, 1941 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Ridgeway in Kirksville, MO. Around 1947 the couple began farming. Then in 1963 they opened Ridgeway Hardware. Over the past fifty-two years Jessie committed herself to her business. In doing so, she and her family have created a reputable business and have become an asset to their community. Jessie was a member of the What Cheer Baptist Church and a former member of the Pythias Sisters.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a husband Kenneth Ridgeway; a brother, Leonard Kelley and a sister Margaret Louise Wilcox.

Jessie is survived by her two sons: Leonard (Pat) Ridgeway of What Cheer, Donald (Linda) Ridgeway of San Diego, CA; her two daughters: Caroline Ridgeway of What Cheer and Doris ( Michael) Perry of West Des Moines; her sister, Dorothy (Hartzell) Hillyard of Burlington as well as six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Kenneth Dean Souer
(June 19, 1950 - February 9, 2013)

U.S. Veteran
Funeral services for Kenneth “ K9” Souer, 62 of Delta will begin at 10:00 am on Friday at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Martinsburg. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday with family present from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Kenneth Dean Souer was born icon near What Cheer, Iowa on June 19, 1950 the son of Doyle and Gladys Ross Souer. He was a 1968 graduate of Tri-County High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as a MP. Kenneth completed heating and cooling training before eventually working twenty five years with Manatts Construction. On October 2, 1974 Kenneth was united in marriage to Wanda Louise Meeker at the Souer Farm east of What Cheer. He was a member of the American Legion and former member of the 4H Club. K9 enjoyed hunting, fishing and attending auctions looking for things to numerous to mention. He will be remembered as a gentle giant by many and as a great father by his two daughters.

Kenneth is preceded in death by his father, Doyle Souer; his wife Wanda Souer and an infant sister, Ethel Mae Souer.

He is survived by his mother, Gladys Souer of Delta; his daughters: Jennifer (Darrin) Yilek and Patricia Bown both of Delta; three brothers: Wayne (Sherry) Souer of Delta, Bob (Lynn) Souer of Delta and Keith (Robbin) Souer of Montezuma; a sister-in-law Melissa (Tim) Deegan of Hedrick and a grandson Alex Bown.

Norma Jean Beede
(February 3, 1927 - February 13, 2013)

Norma Beede, 86 of Grinnell and formerly of Montezuma went to be with her heavenly father on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma. Burial will be held at 2:00 pm at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Friday, February 15, 2013 at the Holland Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma and the family will be present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Evangelical Church.

Norma Beede, daughter of Clarence and Marjorie (Cox) Roth, was born icon on February 3, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines in January of 1945. On November 1, 1946, Norma was united in marriage to Darrel Beede in Des Moines. To this union two children were born, Debbie and Mark. Norma worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Phone Company for seven years until they had children, when she then decided to stay home and take care of her family. Norma was a wonderful mother and a caring grandmother and a great grandmother. Her family was the most important thing in her life. Norma was a Camp Fire Girl leader and was the head of the east side district. Norma was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing dominoes and fishing. She also enjoyed crocheting, attending the East High School Alumni luncheons and wintering in Arizona. Norma was a member of the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church, the Lake Ponderosa Association and the Montezuma Country Club.

Her memory will be cherished by her husband of 66 years, Darrel Beede of Grinnell; her daughter, Debbie (Mark) Rinehart of Montezuma; her son, Mark Beede of Des Moines; her four grandchildren and families; Scott (Tara) Rinehart and children: Lauren, Mark and Anthony; Jennifer (Greg) King and children: Tyler, Preslie and Piper; Melissa (Andy) Forkner and Jeff (Kelsey King) Beede and daughter, Kinlee; and one sister, Mary Buschusen.

Norma is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Marjorie Roth and her niece, Cindy Scholtz.

Dale "Bud" Eugene Pringle
(July 19, 1927 - February 15, 2013)

Funeral services for Dale “Bud” Pringle, 85, of What Cheer will begin at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery at What Cheer. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm on Monday with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Serenity House Hospice in Oskaloosa or to What Cheer Fire & Rescue.

Dale Eugene Pringle was born icon July 19, 1927 in Indianapolis, Iowa the son of Joseph and Inez Sproul Pringle. His father passed away when Bud was in the eighth grade. His older brothers were both in the military so Bud assumed the responsibility of the family farm at age fourteen. Over the years Bud continued his farming operation and he owned and operated a live stock trucking company before managing Wakes Feed Store in What Cheer. In 1984 he retired from farming and began driving a school bus for Tri-County Community School until 1999. Bud enjoyed attending harness races and the flea markets in What Cheer as well as dancing with his partner, Leda McAdams. He also enjoyed coffee time with his friends at Ahlbee’s and a nice sunny day to mow lawns.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Connie Pringle; his son, Daniel Pringle; two brothers: Joseph and James Pringle and a sister, Frances Pringle.

Dale is survived by two sons: Larry (Karla) Pringle of Alexandria, VA and Kenny Pringle of Iowa City; his three daughters: Cathy Pringle of Ottumwa, Cindy (David) Curtis of Ottumwa and Kelly (Mark) Fitzsimmons of Red Wing, MN. Bud also leaves behind a dear friend, Leda McAdams of Delta; sixteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Deborah Jean Gregory
(December 21, 1952 - February 23, 2013)

Deborah Gregory, 60 of Montezuma passed away Saturday morning, February 23, 2013. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Interment will be held in the Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River. Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Hospice.

Deborah Jean Gregory, daughter of Eugene and Eulalia (Martens) Garrett, was born icon on December 21, 1952 in Marengo, Iowa. She was a 1971 graduate from Deep River-Millersburg High School and attended classes at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. On April 4, 1981, Deb was united in marriage to Alleyn Fisher. To this union two children were born, Jaime and Jason. They later divorced. She then married icon Tom Gregory on October 31, 2000. Deb worked at Oskaloosa Hospital and several local nursing homes as a Physical Therapist and a CNA. Due to her health, Deb retired in early 2010. She was a wonderful wife, a loving mother and a caring sister. Deb loved to spend time with her sisters, her children and her dog, Mimi. She enjoyed traveling, listening to country music, collecting angels and camping; especially at the Iowa State Fair, where she enjoyed the truck and tractor pulls. Deb was very musical. She enjoyed playing the piano and other various instruments.

Her memory will be honored by her husband, Tom Gregory of Montezuma; her children, Jaime Fisher of Keswick and Jason (Alicia) Fisher of Johnston; her siblings, Dixie (Burt) Byers of Amana, Diane (David) George of Keswick, Dana (Michael) Watkins of Grinnell and David (Ann) Garrett of Grimes; several nieces, nephews and friends.

Deborah was preceded in death by her parents, a nephew, Mathew Talbert, a mother-in-law, Shirley Gregory and a maternal grandmother, Lilia Martens.

Iona "Onie" Irene Johnson
(January 29, 1925 - February 25, 2013)

Iona "Onie" Johnson, 88 of Montezuma passed away Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Montezuma United Methodist Church. Burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with an Eastern Star service to follow. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Montezuma Ambulance, Montezuma United Methodist Church or Grinnell Regional Hospice.

Iona Irene Johnson, daughter of Clint C. and Ivah (Hanawalt) Icenbice was born icon on January 29, 1925 in Deep River, Iowa. She graduated from Deep River High School in 1942. On March 2, 1947, Onie was united in marriage to Farrell R. Johnson. To this union two children were born, Terry and Sheryl. Farrell and Onie farmed in the Deep River area all of their life. Onie was a typical farmers wife, giving a helping hand when needed. Onie also worked at Miracle Recreation in Grinnell. Onie was a loving wife, caring mother and gracious grandmother. Onie enjoyed camping; especially at the Iowa State Fair, where they camped for nearly 60 years She also enjoyed quilting, the Chicago Cubs and spending time with her family. Onie was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, Lafayette Chapter No. 232 Order of the Easter Star and the Sunshine Sister.

She is survived by her children, Terry (Jane) Johnson of New Hampton and Sheryl Johnson of Fort Myers, FL; four grandchildren, Allen (Tanya) Johnson, Aaron (Amanda) Johnson, Ann (Jesse Stock) Johnson and Mariah Meissner and three great-grandchildren, Olivia Johnson, Reed Johnson and Julia Johnson.

Iona was preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Ivah Icenbice; her husband, Farrell Johnson in 2005; a grandson, Sean Meissner; a brother, Kenneth Icenbice; and infant twin sisters, Muriel and Mariam.

Zelda Mae Watt
(November 15, 1924 - February 27, 2013)

Zelda Watt 88, of Montezuma, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Grinnell Regional Hospital. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Monday, March 4, 2013 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Burial will be in the Pleasant Township Cemetery at Ewart. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Judith Joy Ketels
(November 26, 1940 - March 5, 2013)

Judith Joy Ketels, 72 of Weston, Vermont died at home on March 5, 2013 while under hospice care, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born icon near Montezuma, Iowa on November 26,1940, the second daughter of Walter and Maxine (Miller) Ketels. She attended country school graduating from Montezuma High School in 1959. In 1963 she graduated from the State College of Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa) as a business major. She was named Miss Future Female Business Executive in 1963 by the college.

Judi began her career with J.C. Penney Co. while in college. She held several jobs with the retailer, often being the first woman named to a position, including being the first female management trainee for the company. In 1974, she was promoted to company headquarters in New York City. After over 25 years with JCP, she retired and moved to Arlington, VT in 1989.

In Vermont, she thrived on hiking, reading, touring and volunteering in the village. Judi started her own company, "Walking Tours of Southern Vermont." She led groups hiking inn-to-inn with the help of a history, nature or photography guide and aided by lamas as pack animals. With this venture, she could share her beloved Green Mountain State with others and she stated "they were the best years of my life."

In 1996, Judi was diagnosed with cancer and she closed her hiking company to focus on regaining her health. She then worked for several business and later owned a Curves franchise in Bennington, one of the first in Vermont. In 2005, after selling her business and her home, she retired again. She purchased a 32' motor home and with her beloved cat, Lilly, began traveling around the country. She traveled extensively throughout the U.S., visiting the places she had longed to see. This quest ended when her declining health brought her back to Vermont in February, 2013.

Judi enjoyed meeting new people and hearing about their travels. She also loved nature, a good laugh, reading, volunteering, and her family and friends. Judi was preceded in death by her parents; her infant brother, Steven Jon Ketels; her brother-in-law, Ralph Willett and her nephew, Jeffrey Spain.She is survived by her sisters, Karen Willett of Brooklyn, IA; Sheryl (Darrell) Spain of Montezuma, IA and nephews David Willett and James Spain both of Iowa. Judi will also be greatly missed by many other relatives and dear friends, especially the Nunnikhovens and Seymours of Vermont.

Memorial services for Judi Ketels will be held on Wednesday, May 1 at 2:00 pm at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation with the family will be held from 1 to 2 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service and a coffee time will be held at the United Methodist Church in Montezuma. A celebration of Judi's life will also be held in Vermont in the future. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Susan G. Komen for a Cure, the Bennington Coalition for the Homeless (the 6 Bank Street Shelter), the Vermont Food Bank, the American Cancer Society or the hospice of your choice

Melva Bernice Johnson
(January 12, 1925 - February 7, 2013)

Melva Johnson, 88 of Oskaloosa and formerly of Barnes City passed away Thursday morning, February 7, 2013 at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Monday, February 11, 2013 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma with Pastor Boyd Sparks officiating. No visitation is planned. Interment will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.

Melva Bernice Johnson, the daughter of Cecil and Bernice (Simpson) Harry, was born icon on January 12, 1925 in Poweshiek County. She graduated from Barnes City High School. Melva was united in marriage to Kenneth Johnson. She taught music for a few years before becoming a farmer's wife. Melva lived in the Barnes City area most of her life, until she moved to the nursing home in 2005. She loved her cat, Ruby. Melva was a member of the Barnes City United Methodist Church and the Montezuma United Methodist Church.

Melva was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Bernice Harry and her husband, Kenneth Johnson.

Leona Lavelle Ochs
(December 30, 1917 - March 17, 2013)

Leona Ochs, 95 of Deep River passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 at the Brooklyn Community Estates in Brooklyn. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held in the Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River. Memorial contributions may be made to the Deep River Fire Department.

Leona Lavelle Ochs, daughter of Ailey and Pansy (Workman) Hicks was born icon on December 30, 1917 in Poweshiek County. She attended country school in the Poweshiek area. On November 20, 1937, Leona was united in marriage to Melvin Ochs in Vinton, Iowa. To this union three children were born. After they were married, Melvin and Leona ran the oil station in Deep River for a few years before they started farming. They farmed in the Deep River area most of their lives. Leona enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with her family; especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the United Church in Deep River.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ailey and Pansy Hicks; her husband, Melvin Ochs; two children, Stan Ochs and Murlene Rauch and several brothers and sisters.

Leona is survived by her daughter-in-law, Rita Ochs of Brooklyn; her son-in-law, LaVern (Irveen) Rauch of Montezuma; her five grandchildren, Kathy Simonton of Desoto, Jenea (Michael) Keith of Lampe, MO, Jennifer (Mike) Hildebrand of Brooklyn, Heather (Mike) Holmstedt of Brooklyn and Angie (Jay) Riddell of Sparland, IL; 11 great grandchildren, Chad Simonton, Ryan (Megan Johnson)Simonton, Garrett Keith, Kaitlyn Hildebrand, Allison Hildebrand, Madison Maschmann, Mason Maschmann, Madalyn Holmstedt, Ryan Holmstedt, Ryan Riddell and Cooper Riddell and her three great-great grandchildren, Kennady Simonton, Noah Simonton and Grayson Simonton.
