Cecil Edward Christner was born
March 26, 1927 in Johnson County near Sharon Center, Iowa the son of Elam and Nettie (Swartzendruber) Christner. He attended Horse Shoe Bend rural school. Cecil lived in the Wellman and Kalona communities most all of his life. He drove a cream truck, sold Berry seed corn, did custom corn shelling, worked for Johnson County maintenance, was the Kalona Marshall from 1966 - 1973, and then drove truck for 12 years. He loved spending time with his family, fishing, mushroom hunting, being in the outdoors, and reading. He also drove school bus for College Community and Mid - Prairie Schools. Cecil was a member of the Kalona Methodist Church. Cecil died suddenly on Monday, June 14, 2004 at the Maplewood Manor in Keota at the age of 77 years. Cecil is survived by a daughter - Shirley Harvey and husband Richard of Wellman; 2 sons - Robert Christner and wife Karen of Kalona; J. Gary Christner of Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren - Jon Harvey and wife Jasmine of Williamsburg; Shawna Harvey - Miller and husband Byron of Wellman; Elisabeth Harvey and fiancé Cory Lewis of Omaha, Nebraska; Casey Christner and Barry Christner of Kalona; 2 great grandchildren - Meagan Harvey and Alana Lewis; a sister - Eudora Mullet and husband Henry of Kalona; 2 brothers - John Christner and wife Nellie of Washington; Leo Christner and wife Phyllis of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and 2 stepsisters - Helen Swartzendruber of Fairview, Michigan; and Verna Diltz and husband William of Collegeville, Pennsylvania; and 15 nieces and nephews; and 18 great nieces and nephews. Cecil was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew William Diltz Jr. and a brother - in - law Lloyd Swartzendruber.
A General Memorial fund has been established.

Pamela K. Winegarden, age 57,of South English died following a lengthy illness on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at Powell Funeral Home in North English. The Rev. Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Sorden Cemetery near Webster. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, June 14th from 5 PM to 8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center in Iowa City. Pamela K. in Sigourney, IA on January 26, 1947, a daughter of Ellis & Mildred Tinnes Pfannebecker. She attended school in Sigourney a short time and then graduated from West Miami High School in Miami, Fl. She was united in marriage to Gary Jack Winegarden on March 8, 1971, at the United Methodist Church in Keswick, IA. They lived a short time in Webster, IA, and have lived in South English the past 30 years. Pamela enjoyed gardening and spoiling her grandchildren. She did secretarial work in the agricultural business, working 18 years for Dave Hillman. The past few years Pamela worked for Winegarden Trucking. Pamela is survived by her husband Gary Jack Winegarden of South English, IA; a son Jeffrey Oxford (Joyce) of Webster, IA; Damon Winegarden (Kristina) of South English, IA; a daughter Shannon Rotter (Ryan) of Williamsburg, IA; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Linda Vittetoe of Tampa, Fl; brothers, Larry Becker of Miami, FL; Mike Pfannebecker of Rose Hill, IA; Rick Pfannebecker of North English, IA; Wally Gilliland of North English, IA an aunt, Hazel Crews of Dover, FL and an uncle Dwight Pfannebecker of Martinsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Kathy Eckley.

John F. Kauffman was born
Saturday, May 22, 1937 near Wellman, Iowa the son of Chester and Catherine (Clingdanel) Kauffman. He attended Iowa Mennonite School. On June 18, 1958 he was united in marriage to Carolyn Miller at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. They have lived in Iowa City, rural Riverside and Kalona. John worked as a mechanic and was shop foreman at Iowa City Coach Company. He was a member of the Kalona Christian Fellowship Church, and a former member of the Christian Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed studying Bible prophecy, camping, John Deere tractors and fixing things. John died on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City from cancer at the age of 67 years. John is survived by his wife Carolyn of Kalona; 3 children - Teresa Finch of Riverside; Amy Almeida and husband Greg of Tracy, California; Eric Kauffman and wife Heather of Austin, Texas; 7 grandchildren; his mother - Catherine Kauffman of Riverside; 4 sisters - Erma Ropp of Kalona; Marilyn Hunt of Riverside; Dawn Whitlock of Riverside; Gayle Barrett of Mount Vernon, Washington; and 2 brothers - Wayne Kauffman and Robert Kauffman of Chicago, Illinois. John was preceded in death by his father; and 2 brothers - infant Paul Richard Kauffman and Lowell Kauffman.
In lieu of flowers a general memorial fund has been established.
Helen Grace, Wiggins

Helen Grace Wiggins was born
on October 7, 1902, west of North English, IA, a daughter of John Earl and Isabelle Jane Gilchrist Wiggins. When she was a year old she became a victim of Polio which left her crippled. She went through life not thinking she was handicapped. She attended Grant Country School and graduated from North English High School in 1920. Helen took Normal Training courses in high school and received her teachers certificate. She started her teaching career in 1921. She taught 10 years at Porter School in Keokuk County, 12 years at Gritter School in Iowa County, and 4 more years at other schools. Helen also worked a few summers while teaching at the English Valleys Creamery in North English. She later took a full time office position and worked there 22 years. She retired in 1969. Helen was a member of the North English Christian Church where she taught Sunday School classes and helped with Vacation Bible School for many years. She was also a life - time member of the Order Of The Eastern Star and served on committees and held many offices. Helen put forth an effort to succeed in whatever she attempted, felt she had lived a good life and followed the motto “Life is what we make of it, it always has been, it always will be.” Helen became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in May 2001. She died there on Monday, May 24, 2004 following a short illness. She lived 101 years, 7 months and 17 days. She is survived by 4 nieces: Shirley Tucker, Helen Marie Davis, Pam Fox & Frances Christian; and 3 nephews: Lynn Kolosik, Stanley Kolosik & Vance Kolosik. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mildred Kolosik and Gladys Lockridge, a niece Merna Britten and a nephew Lyle Kolosik. Celebration of Life services will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home in North English on Tuesday, May 25th from 5 PM until 8 PM. An Order of the Eastern Star service may be held at 7:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery.

Williamsburg - Earl Herman Hopp was born
November 17, 1920 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of William H. and Rose Wille Hopp. He attended Trinity Lutheran School in Conroy. He was baptized December 14, 1920 and confirmed in 1934 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Earl served in the Army in WWII. He was united in marriage to Lillian Maas September 25, 1948 at the St. Paul Parsonage in Williamsburg. Earl has been a life long resident of the Iowa County area. He worked Roehrkasse Meat Locker for 29 years and at the Colony Haus Motor Inn at Little Amana for 6 years until retiring in 1985. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed playing cards, caring for his granddaughters and tinkering around with carpentry. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 in Williamsburg. Earl died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 5 days. He is survived by his wife Lillian; two sons: Gary (Barb) Hopp and Randy ( Marcia) Hopp; a daughter: Carolyn Hopp all of Williamsburg; two granddaughters: Haley and Ashley Hopp; a brother: Herbert Hopp of Ladora and sister: Alice Kleinmeyer of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Helen Hopp, brothers: Clarence, Wilfred, Alfred, Otto and Elmer. Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Rev Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. With a VFW service at 7:00 p.m.

Dean Richard Vandenburg was born
May 15, 1928 in Humeston, Iowa the son of Lester and Gladys (Tait) Vandenburg. He has lived his entire life in southeast Iowa, and has lived in Wellman since 1999. He worked as a truck driver and at Perfex. Dean died on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a long illness at the age of 76 years. Dean is survived by 5 children - Wanda Nau and fiancé Lee White of Kalona; Richard Dean Vandenburg and wife Melissa of Kalona; Kathy Gerdes and husband Steve of Ainsworth; Linda Adam and husband Nick of Wellman; Peggy Strickler and husband Ron of Kinross; 15 grandchildren; and 2 brothers - Gerald "Skip" Vandenburg of Cedar Rapids and David Vandenburg of Humeston. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a sister Margaret; and 3 brothers - Donald, Delbert and an infant.

Kathleen JoAnne Calvin was born
on June 9, 1930, in Washington County, IA, a daughter of Harry and Bertha Emde Gardner. She graduated from North English High School and attended Ottumwa Heights College for 3 years. On June 22, 1957, Kathleen married
Laurence L. Calvin in North English. She taught in rural schools for 2 years and in North English for 5 years. She also worked 8 years at Holden Foundation Seeds in Williamsburg and 16 years at Amana Refrigeration, retiring in 1994. Kathleen attended St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the North English Community Club. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and spending time at the community center. Kathleen died following an extended illness at her home in North English, on Saturday, May 15, 2004. Kathleen lived 73 years, 11 months and 6 days. She is survived by sons Charles L. Calvin (Alana) of North English, IA; John W. Calvin (Jan) of North English, IA; and a daughter Patricia J. Lehrman ( Daren) of Stanwood, IA; a grandson Brady Lehrman; and brothers: Wayne Gardner of Iowa City, IA; Harry Gardner Jr. & Burrell Gardner both of Toledo, IA; and Francis Gardner of Stoughton, WI. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents and husband Laurence in November 1996. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday May 19, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with the Rev. David Hitch officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation service in North English from 4 PM to 8 PM, with a wake service at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Kathleen’s name to Hospice of Iowa County.

Williamsburg - Walter Herman Heitshusen was born
January 30, 1924 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Herman F. and Anna Baack Heitshusen. He was baptized March 16, 1924 and confirmed April 10, 1938. He attended Immanuel Parochial School. Walter served in WWII in the Philippines Island where he was wounded and Honorable discharged receiving the Purple Heart Medal. He was united in marriage to Esther Schreiber April 11, 1948 at Grand Center Lutheran Church near Iowa Falls, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed near Williamsburg until 1987 when they moved to Williamsburg. Along with farming Walter also engaged in raising Turkeys. Walter was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving on various offices through out the years. He served many years on the District Church Extension Board and enjoyed the past years doing volunteer work. Walter died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at his home of complications of cancer at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 13 days. Walter is survived by his wife Esther of 56 years; five children: Dale (Karol) Heitshusen of Coppell, Texas, Donna (Phill) Hardin of De Soto, Texas, Carol (Ken) Maca of Staplehurst, Nebraska, James (Deb) Heitshusen of South Amana and Gary (Amy) Heitshusen of Sharpsburg, Georgia. 11 grandchildren: Erin Lange, Audra, Brian and Christie Hardin, Andy and Jeremy Maca, Breanne, Amanda and Josh Heitshusen, Eric and Matthew Heitshusen; a great grandchild Madison Lange; a brother: Edgar (Alice) Heitshusen of South Amana; two sisters: Ethel (Richard) Newkirk of Williamsburg and Luella (James) Stone of Des Moines, Iowa and a sister - in - law: Doris Heitshusen of Luzerne. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Erwin, Willard and Herbert. A Celebration of Life Service will be Monday, May 17, 2004 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg with Rev. Richard Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, May 16, 2004 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials are for Lutheran Bible Translators, Lutheran Interparish School and Concordia Seminary at St. Louis.

Iowa City Dateline... Corinne M. Suter, age 93, of Iowa City, died Friday, June 24, 2004, at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City following a short illness. Corinne was born
March 20, 1911, near South English, to Aldine and Bertha (Grove) Suter. She graduated from Kinross High School and MacPherson College in MacPherson, Kansas. Corrine lived most of her adult life in Iowa City. She worked as a librarian for the University of Iowa for many years before retiring at age of 72. She was a lifelong member of the English River Church of the Brethren near South English. Corrine was active in many social causes. She also served on the Board of Directors of Old Brick and was instrumental in the preservation of that important Iowa City building. Survivors include two nieces: Elizabeth Hoskins of Cedar Rapids and Cynthia Newell of Muscatine ; a nephew, David Suter of Evanston, Illinois; six great nieces and nephews and three great - great nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: John and Ralph Suter. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at the English River Church of the Brethren in rural South English with Pastor Beth Miller officiating. Burial will be at the Brethren Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English.
