KEOTA - George McFadden, age 89, of Keota, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness. George was born icon March 13, 1915 in Fairfield, Iowa, to William C. and Lulu (Young) McFadden and graduated from Fairfield High School. He was married icon to Betty M. Bergstresser for 29 years until their divorce. On February 28, 1976, he married icon Joyce Geltz in Keokuk, Iowa. George lived in Iowa most of his life and worked primarily as an auto body technician. He owned and operated the Sigourney Body Shop in Sigourney for several years before retiring and moving to La Junta, Colorado, where he was an assistant manager for a golf course. He and Joyce moved to Keota in 1992. George was a member of the United Church of Faith and Lagos Acres Country Club in Keota and was a former member and secretary of the Elks Club in La Junta, Colorado. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting and driving and was an avid Cubs fan. Survivors include his wife: Joyce McFadden of Keota; two sons: Mike McFadden of Oskaloosa and Patrick McFadden and wife Patricia of Minden; three daughters: Bonnie Gilpin and husband Jack of Keokuk, Karen Frakes of Antioch, California and Lori Schneider and husband David of Champaign, Illinois; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and his first wife: Betty of Oskaloosa. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Louise Pratt, one brother, Jack and one granddaughter, Merrillee. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Pastor Sallie Graves officiating. Private burial will be held at a later date. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the United Church of Faith, Lagos Acres Country Club or the Keota Senior Center. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth (Liz) O’Rourke was born icon November 29, 1918 at home in Holbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Ed and Mabel Rock Hannon. She graduated from Parnell High School and Mt. Mercy College with an A.A. Degree. She taught in a number of rural schools prior to her marriage. Liz was united in marriage to Michael O’Rourke May 1, 1947 in Holbrook. Liz was the secretary for the Williamsburg school system working at the Parnell location for 23 years retiring in 1993. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church , the St. Joseph Altar and Rosary Society and American Legion Auxiliary. Liz died Sunday evening, March 14, 2004 at her home after a sudden illness at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 14 days . She is survived by four sons: Patrick (Judy) O’Rourke of Austin, Texas, Larry O’Rourke of Parnell, Terry (Colette) O’Rourke of St. Louis, Missouri and Dan (Susie) O’Rourke of Williamsburg; two daughters: Betty (Kelly) Coleman of Whitsett, North Carolina and Susie O’Rourke of North Liberty; 9 Grandchildren and 2 Great grandchildren; a brother: Ed Hannon of Castro Valley, California. Liz is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers: Pete and Paul Hannon and a sister Catherine Hanson. Celebration of Life service will be Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. Rev. David Hitch will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell from 3 to 8 P.M.. where a Rosary service will be held at 4:00 PM and a Prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg are caring for the services. Memorials are for Parnell Senior Dining Site and St. Joseph Cemetery in Parnell.

WILLIAMSBURG: Rev. John A. Robinson, Jr. Died on Sunday, March 7, 2004 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital after an extended illness at the age of 81 years. John A. Robinson, Jr. Was born icon February 12, 1923 in Berlin, New Jersey the son of John Alden and Ella Mae Piggott Robinson. He graduated from high school in Haddonfield, New Jersey in 1940, Temple University in Philadelphia in 1954 with a B.S. in Education and Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New Jersey in 1957 with a Master of Divinity Degree. John was united in marriage to Alta Schanck on July 21, 1945 in the Cranbury, New Jersey United Methodist Church. John was ordained an Elder in the Methodist Church in 1955 at the General Conference in Ocean City, New Jersey. He worked hard to make the worship services inspirational, reverent and a sincere time of worship of God in the churches of Winslow, Englishtown and Old Bridge in New Jersey and in Hedrick, Martinsburg, Williamsburg, Woodward, Dallas Center and Garwin in Iowa. John loved to sing praises to God and to preach the word of God. Before he was a pastor, he was paymaster for Owens Illinois Glass Co. in Berlin, New Jersey for 10 years. He was president of the Conference Methodist Youth Fellowship when he was called to be a minister. He returned to school to prepare himself for the ministry. He also sang with the Haddonfield Coral Society. John is survived by his wife Alta of Williamsburg, Iowa; three sons: Dr. John Alden Robinson III and wife Patti of Clinton, Iowa - Dr. Harrison L Robinson and wife Mariam of Madison, Wisconson - Nelson W. Robinson and wife Julie of North Liberty, Iowa; a daughter, Alta Jill Bailey and husband Jeff of Ames, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Sarah, John, Seth, Tyler, Jason, Benjamin, Parisah, Andrew, Colin and Kian; a great grandson, Shane and two sisters: Mabel Wood of New Jersey and Miriam McCloskey of Syracuse, New York. John was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter Kristal. Celebration of Life Services are set for 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 9 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg with Rev. David Schuldt officiating. Visitation is from 12:00 noon until Service Time on Tuesday. Burial will be in the Berlin Cemetery in Berlin, New Jersey on Friday, March 12.

Williamsburg - Hilda Anna Sophia Von Weihe was born icon July 10, 1920 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Louis Henry and Martha Anna Sophia Newkirk Iburg. She attended rural school in Troy Township. She was baptized August 1,1920 at home and confirmed March 25, 1934 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Hilda was united in marriage to Rudolph Frederick Von Weihe on January 3, 1940 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. She lived in the Williamsburg area all of her life and moved to town in 1970. Hilda worked as a cook at Little Chicago for 5 years and Middle America Motel as a housekeeper for 10 years until retiring in 1985. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg, where she has served on the Ladies Aid. She also has belonged to the Walter Lee Young People’s Society. Hilda died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at Colonial Manor in Amana after a short illness at the age of 83 years. She is survived by two sons: Kenneth (Lynne) Von Weihe of Newhall and Donald (Bonnie) Von Weihe of Williamsburg; three grandchildren: Robert (Mary) Von Weihe, DawnVon Weihe and fiance Matt Stoner and Stacy (Travis) Murphy; a great granddaughter, Carissa Stoner and five step great grandchildren; two brothers: Louis Iburg of Center, Missouri and Everett (Joan) Iburg of Victor; two sisters: Erna (David) Davies and Florine Rowe all of Williamsburg. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1963, a brother Gilbert Iburg and three sisters: Florence Iburg, Irene Iburg and Laverne Collingwood. Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Rev. Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. In Lieu of flowers, memorial are for Lutheran Interparish School.

Virginia Loraine Flin was born icon August 17, 1912 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Maximillian and Mary Phillips Mueller. She attended school in Waterloo. Virginia was united in marriage to Lloyd A. Flin on January 25, 1933 in Denver, Colorado. The couple has lived in Denver, Colorado from 1932 to 1937, Bell, California frm 1937 to 1940, Des Moines, Iowa from 1941 to 1979 and Waterloo from 1979. Virginia worked as a sales clerk for Younkers in Des Moines for 23 years before retiring and moved back to Waterloo. She loved animals especially her dogs. Virginia died Friday, March 5, 2004 at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck after a lingering illness at the age of 91 years. She is survived by a sister Harriett Schake of Waterloo; a nephew Jack Schake and wife Sharon of Waterloo and a niece Donna Bebee of Cedar Rapids. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1979, an infant son, two brothers: Robert and Lawrence Mueller and two sisters: Esther Johnson and Ruth Henry and a close friend Shorty Masterson. Celebration of Life service will be Monday, March 8, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg, Iowa. Rev Richard Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Parnell, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:00a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Monday.

SIGOURNEY - Nellie E. Edmundson, age 80, of Sigourney, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at the Sigourney Care Center following an extended illness. Nellie was born icon July 11, 1923 in Cambridge, Iowa, to Nels and Rosa (White) Erickson and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1941. On June 11, 1945, she married icon Jack Edmundson in El Hambra, California. The couple lived in Sigourney, where they owned and operated the Town House Café from 1964 until 1991. Nellie was a member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church and enjoyed reading, bowling and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters: Elaine Madsen of Carter Lake, Iowa and Esther Molyneux of Davenport, Iowa; three grandchildren: Bill Madsen and wife, Trish and Jennifer and Joel Molyneux. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jack, in 1992 and three sisters: Jean Fierz, Esther Stanley and Marilyn Fear. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. Danny Lemons officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Keokuk County. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

SIGOURNEY - Opal Horras, age 91, of Sigourney, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at the Sigourney Care Center following a lengthy illness. Opal was born icon January 20, 1913, in Sigourney, to Gust and Enza (Messerschmitt) Schimmelpfennig and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1930. On January 24, 1934, she married icon Clifford E. Horras in Princeton, Missouri. The couple lived and farmed northwest of Sigourney until moving into Sigourney in 1962. Opal worked as a clerk at Dick’s Corner for 17 years. She was a member of the Sigourney Presbyterian Church, Chapter L P.E.O., Aspasia Chapter #198 Order of the Eastern Star, Garden Club, Scattergood Club and Farm Bureau, where she was a member of the Kitchen Band. Opal never had a meeting she didn’t like and enjoyed making Christmas candy and playing cards. Clifford and Opal thoroughly enjoyed traveling, meeting new people and life in Sigourney. Survivors include one son: Don Horras and wife Rev. Mary; seven grandchildren: DeEtt Madoll, Duane Horras, Matthew Horras, Jesse Horras, Molly Horras, Scott Leeper and Monica White; eight great grandchildren and one sister -in-law: Dorothy Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Clifford in 1995 and two brothers: Evert and Vernie Schimmelpfennig. Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Private burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Sigourney Care Center or Richland United Methodist Church. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

FINCH, JESSIE R. BALLARD

Jessie Ruth Ballard Finch was born icon on December 2, 1920 near Keswick, IA, a daughter of Roy and Mabel Edna Graham Downing. She graduated from South English High School. Jessie was united in marriage to Kenneth Newton Ballard on June 25, 1939 in Cedar Rapids. They farmed near North English before moving into town in November 1978. Kenneth preceded her in death in October 1979. On November 2, 1980, Jessie married icon John Henry Finch in North English. She worked a short time in Housekeeping at the University of Iowa in Iowa City before retiring in 1981. Jessie was a member of the North English United Methodist Church, was active worker at the Community Center, and was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed gardening and canning. Jessie loved to sew, play cards, and fish. She became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in April 2002. She died following a brief illness on Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Jessie lived 83 years and 3 months. She is survived by a son Chester Ballard and wife Carol of North English, IA; daughters: Janice Masters of Williamsburg, IA; and Sheila Severt and husband Willis of North English, IA; 3 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; a step daughter Judy Ulin and husband Jerry of North English, IA; step sons: Myron Finch and wife Janice of Baxter, IA and Randy Finch of Cedar Rapids, IA; 6 step grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren. Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, husband; a grand daughter; 3 brothers: infant Harry Downing, Hugh Downing, and Fred Downing; 5 sisters: Mildred VanDee, Eleanore Wichman, Evelyn Bair, Juanita McKay and Adda Danner. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, March 5, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in North English, with the Rev. Mary McAtee officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Thursday, March 4, 2004, from 4 PM to 8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Alzheimer’s Research.

Dorothy Jean Beason Yoder was born icon January 26, 1928 in Bellefontaine, Ohio the daughter of Oscar and Grace (Robson) Beason. She graduated from Bob Jones Academy. She attended Bob Jones College, Fort Wayne Bible College, Delta College, Michigan State University, and Southeast Community College. On December 31, 1948 she was united in marriage to Herbert L. Yoder in Bellefontaine, Ohio. They lived in Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, Michigan, Nebraska, Florida and Iowa. Dorothy had worked as a substitute school teacher, co - owner of a grocery store, dental assistant, and a secretary. While living in Florida, Herb and Dorothy managed an independent living apartment complex. Currently Dorothy was employed by Powell Funeral Homes. Dorothy was very involved in the churches where Herb was the minister. She sang with the College Vesper Quartet, organized and sang with the Joy Messenger Quintette for Youth For Christ where they sang on the radio and made several records, and sang with the Preacher Wives Trio. She held several retreats and was a speaker at various Mother - Daughter Banquets, and at Christian Woman's Club. She was involved with W.M.S.C., Sunday School and Bible Classes. Dorothy also counseled ladies on a regular basis. Dorothy attended the Parkview Evangelical Free Church and was a member of the Embroidery Club in Wellman. Dorothy died on Friday, February 27, 2004 at her home in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 76 years. Dorothy is survived by her husband Herb of Wellman; 3 daughters - Cynthia Lane and husband Larry of Prospect, Ohio; Sara Swartzendruber and husband Ron of Kalona; Sonia Miiller and husband Jay of Kalona; 2 sons - Steve Yoder and wife Becky of Palmer Lake, Colorado; Stuart Yoder and wife Connie of Omaha, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and 2 brothers - Robert Beason of Summersville, South Carolina; and Douglas Beason of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; a grandchild; a great grandchild; a brother - Harry Beason; and a sister - Elizabeth Smith.
A General Memorial Fund has been established.

McMenomy, Dean

Williamsburg - Dean G. McMenomy was born icon January 22, 1925 near Millersburg, Iowa, the son of Joseph Myles and Emma Joseph McMenomy. He attended school in Pilot Township, Iowa County, Iowa. Dean served in WWII in the Pacific Tour and European Theater. Dean was united in marriage to Shirley Wetjen on April 8, 1951 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. They lived and farmed SE of Williamsburg until retiring and moved to Williamsburg in 1989. Dean stayed active with a number of other jobs, with the most recent being working at the Little Amana Holiday Inn. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he has served as a Trustee and on the Finance Committee. We has also served on the ASC board. Dean died Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after a lingering illness at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 3 days. He is survived by his wife Shirley; a son Todd and wife Connie McMenomy all of Williamsburg; 9 grandchildren; a brother Duane McMenomy of Tiffin. Dean is preceded in death by his parents, a son Kent, four brothers: Leo, Eugene, Dale and an infant; and two sisters: Leona Still and Genevieve Rodgers. A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, February 28, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Rev Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, February 27, 2004 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg where there will be a VFW Service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials are for Immanuel Lutheran Church Air Conditioner Fund or donors choice.
