DeWayne D. Anderson, 28

DeWayne D. Anderson, age 28, passed away Monday evening, January 12, 2009, at the Doctors Hospital of Tattnall. The Toombs County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a 1998 graduate of Tattnall County High School. He attended Georgia Southern University and Southeastern Technical College. He had worked previously for the Drug Store as a Pharmacist Tech and as a CNA at Tattnall Hospital. DeWayne enjoyed working on computers and swimming.
He is survived by his parents, Gene and Madlin Anderson of Reidsville; a brother and sister - in - law, Michael and Darla Anderson of Reidsville; four half brothers, Bobby Lee Kite, Jr. of Vidalia, Donald Ray Kite, Ronald Lee Kite and Benny Ray Kite, all of Lyons; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers were members of the TCHS Graduating Class of 1998. Honorary pallbearers were Rogers State Prison Honor Guard.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 16, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Reverend William Prince and Pastor Rob Roy MacGregor officiating. Interment followed in the Hardens Chapel Cemetery.

Julius C. Calloway, 82

Julius C. Calloway, 82, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at his home.
The Tattnall County native had resided in Manassas most of his life. He was of Baptist faith and worked for AT&T for 30 years before retiring. He was a proud veteran of WWII.
He was preceded in death by his father, Randall Calloway, and his mothers, Clara Dasher Calloway and Letha Bell Blocker Calloway.
He is survived by his wife, Alaine Dixon Calloway of Manassas; two brothers, Lindell Calloway of Collins and Gary Calloway of Monroe, NC; three sisters, Betty Charters of Savannah, Ann Greene of Fort Mills, SC, and Nancy Jordan of Pembroke; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 16, 2009, at 11 a.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend David Hagan and Reverend Bill Eller officiating. Burial followed in Anderson Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lonnie Calloway, Lindy Calloway, Eldon Calloway, Joshua Calloway, Randy Jenkins and Billy Charter. Honorary pallbearers were friends on Lazy St.
Remembrances can be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, PO Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30458.

Mattie L. Eason, 92

Mattie L. Eason, 92, passed away January 20, 2009, at Evans Memorial Hospital.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Evans County and a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.
Mrs. Eason was preceded in death by her husband, Ennis H. Eason; two sons and a daughter - in - law, Charles E. and Sue Eason and Billy Eason and grandson, Timmy Eason.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter - in - law, Larry Eason of Reidsville and Lenwood and Jane Eason of Glennville; four daughters and sons - in - law, LaJuan Eason of Claxton, Laverne and Andrew Hunt of Claxton, Judy and John Haeger of Lilburn and Faye and Elbert Spivey of Lyons; one brother, Leon Griffin of Port Wentworth; three sisters and brothers - in - law, Allie and Junior Gulledge of Guyton; Lorine Cohen of Glennville and Mildred and Robert Byrd of Pooler; 11 grandchildren and 11 great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are Friday, January 23, at 2 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Brewton Cemetery.

Joel Esquivel, 40

Joel Esquivel, 40, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Texas native had lived in this area since 1983. He was employed with G & R Farms and Four Corners Farms for many years and was of the Catholic Faith.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Esquivel of Glennville; children, Joel Esquivel, Jr., Melody Ann Esquivel and Albert Esquivel, all of Glennville; father, Armando Esquivel of Glennville; sister, Dalia Ross of Glennville; brothers, Ricky Esquivel, Armando Esquivel, Jr., both of Glennville, Jaime Esquivel of Virginia and Leo Esquivel of Texas and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at 11 a.m., at Sand Hill Catholic Church with Father Bob Poanell officiating. Burial followed in Glennville Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Jaime Esquivel, Richard Esquivel, Armando Esquivel, Jr., Cruz Leonerdo Esquivel, Joel Esquivel, Jr. and David A. Ross.

Lyle V. Flores, 22

Lyle V. Flores, 22, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2009, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. The Toombs County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life moving to Macon three years ago. He was employed by Central Georgia Properties in Macon and attended the Light House Pentecostal Church in Collins. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ruth Padgett and uncle, Brian Padgett.
He is survived by his wife, Reyna R. Flores of Lizella, GA; son, Jaylen D. Flores of Lizella, GA; mother, Debbie Hampton Flores of Reidsville; aunts, Angie Stanfield and Connie Hampton; uncle, Jeff Hampton and several cousins and other relatives.
Memorial Funeral Services were held Monday, January 19, 2009, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home in Reidsville with Reverend Greg Smith officiating. Burial was private.

Jean Webber Manuel, 69

Jean Webber Manuel, 69, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009, after a long illness at the inpatient center of Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. She was reared in Tattnall County and lived most of her life in Candler County. She was a member of the Hillside Church of God. Jean was a lady who enjoyed being at home and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren more than anything else in the world.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Lloyd E. “Toby” Manuel; two sons, Terry Manuel (Jennifer) and Rex Manuel all of Metter; grandchildren, Brooke Carter (Joe) and Jordan Manuel and her babies, great grandchildren, Regan and Natalie, all of Metter; sister, Jeanette Eubanks of Aiken, SC; two brothers, Lewis Webber (Ann) of Jacksonville, FL, and Silas Webber (Marlene) of Cobbtown; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Elder Ron Yeakle officiating. Burial followed in the Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Carl Sparks, Kelly Cook, Baxter Funderburk, Harley McGriff, Joe Carter and Bill Hammock. Remembrances may be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, POB 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.

George L. McLain, 61

George L. McLain, 61, died Friday, January 16, 2009, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Metter after a long illness with Huntington’s disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix Gilbert and Glendora Jane Hahn McLain and a sister, Beverly Diane McLain Jaco.
In 1965, George enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was an Apprentice Communications Center Specialist (AFSC 29130) with the 1876 COMM SQ AFCS assigned to Tan Son Nhut Air Base during the 1968 Tet Offensive. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and The Vietnam Service Medal. In 1969, George married Theresa Geraldine Nealy, and they enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1974, serving a three year tour in Germany. They divorced in 1995.
He is survived by a step - mother, Julia Pride McLain; a brother, Felix Howard McLain; four sisters and a brother - in - law, Felita Juliet and Russell Dean Hinson and Mary Louise Newton all of Lawrenceburg, TN, Belinda Fay McLain of Savannah and Pauline Marie Schultz of Lexington, SC; uncle and aunt, Frank Leigh and Bertha Lee “Peggy” McLain of Kernersville, NC; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A family memorial service will be held later at the Falkville City cemetery in Falkville, AL. Remembrances may be made to PVNC Resident’s Fund, Attention: Bobbie Dismuke, Social Services, POB 713, Metter, GA 30439.

Donna McMurtry, 53

Donna McMurtry, 53, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2009, at her residence. The California native had lived in Collins for the past twenty - one years. She was formerly employed at Claxton Poultry and was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church. Donna loved people and had a special love for animals.
She is survived by: a daughter of Bridgett Lantz of California; five brothers and sisters - in - law, Charlie McMurtry of Arizona, Jim and Brenda McMurtry of California, Cecil and Linda McMurtry of Collins, Doug and Ann McMurtry and Patrick McMurtry all of Reidsville; four sisters, Chris Laird, Lucille McMurtry, Marie McMurtry and Judy Clarke, all of California; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jim Rogers and Rev. Thomas Shepherd officiating in the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home in Reidsville. Interment was private.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home is serving the McMurtry family.

Ozzie K. Merritt, 70

Mr. Ozzie K. Merritt, age 70, passed away Monday evening, January 19, 2009, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a farmer and a member of the Reidsville Church of God. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward and Maebell Merritt.
He is survived by two sons, Tom Tracy Merritt, Sr., of Hinesville and Ozzie Wayne Merritt, Sr., of Reidsville; one daughter, Lorrene Goodson of Collins; six sisters, Patsy Anderson, Joyce Tatum and Kathy Merritt, all of Reidsville, Ester Rushing of Brooklet, Janice Dennis of Atlanta, Mary Busby of Collins; three brothers, Louis Merritt of Jesup, Frankie Merritt of Florida, and Eddie Merritt of Collins; nine grandchildren, one great - grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Ozzie Wayne Merritt, Jr., Tom Tracy Merritt, Jr., Neal Bunch, Wade Bunch, Kendall Murray, and Carlos Berrum.
Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2009, from the Reidsville Church of God with the Rev. William Prince officiating. Interment will follow in the Pineview Baptist Church Cemetery.

Hazel Tillman O’Brien, 92

Mrs. Hazel Tillman O’Brien, 92, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at her residence Friday, January 16, 2009. Mrs. O’Brien was a native of Appling County but moved with her parents to Jacksonville, Florida, at an early age. She had lived in Montgomery County since 1945. She retired from Georgia Cooperative Extension Service in 1982 and was a member of the Alston United Methodist Church. Mrs. O’Brien was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Thomas O’Brien.
Survivors are: one son, Jerry O’Brien (Carol) of Milton, GA; two daughters, Kathleen Davis and her husband, the late Mike Davis, of Reidsville, GA, Mary Davis (Johnny) of Montgomery County; four grandsons, who will also be pallbearers, Brien Davis (Tricia) of Reidsville, GA, Jim O’Brien (Jill) of Glenwood, Andy O’Brien of Greenville, SC, Casey Allison (Erica) of Roswell; two great grandchildren, Addah O’Brien and Lakin O’Brien of Greenville, SC; one great grandson, Alex Longtin of Lyons. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Service for Mrs. Hazel Tillman O’Brian was held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, January 18, 2009, at the J. Howell Dixon Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Aycock and Rev. Kevin Hicks officiating. Pallbearers were her four grandsons, Logan Porter and Glen Outler. Interment was in the Walker cemetery in Montgomery County.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Vidalia, 904 Mt. Vernon Rd, Vidalia, GA, 30474, or the Alston Methodist Church, Alston, GA 30412.
Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia was in charge of the arrangements.
