Paul Emmitt Davis
Dr. Paul Emmitt Davis, age 83, of McDonough, Georgia died February 5, 2008. Dr. Davis was born
in Emanuel County, Georgia to the late Dave L. and Lizzie Wiggins Davis. His brothers, Melvin and Clinton Davis, preceded him in death.
He is survived by Martha Bland Davis of McDonough, devoted wife of 59 years; daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki (Ronnie) Stephens of Buford and Debra (Danny) Brown of McDonough; grandchildren, Brittany (Shane) Terrell, Zane Stephens, and Josh Brown; great grandchildren, Madison, Macey, and Hadley Terrell; siblings, Thelma Powell of Savannah, Inman (Runette) Davis of Statesboro, Helen (O’Neal) Rogers of Blun, and Peggy (Robert) Ware of Jacksonville, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Davis proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in WWII as an aviation radioman and gunner and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following the Navy, he received B.S., Masters, and Doctorate Degrees from the University of Georgia. His career and passion as an educator spanned 45 years and included coaching, teaching and administration. He was principal at various Georgia schools including, Lyons High School, McDonough Christian Academy, and Alexander Stephens, as well as serving as Vice President at Brewton-Parker College for 12 years. Later in his career he was the Education Director of Ga. Diagnostic & Classification Center, graduating a record number of inmates. He was the first certified teacher to implement Driver’s Education in the Georgia school system.
He was a devoted family man spending countless hours with his wife, daughters and their families, teaching them to love the Lord and enjoy life. He was an avid golfer and reader and enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially in his native South Georgia. He was an active member of Salem Baptist Church in McDonough. He has faithfully served the Lord in church through the years in the roles as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and lay speaker.
Services were held February 8, at Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Q. Carter and Rev. Dan McKay officiating. Interment Lake Cemetery
in Metter. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Davis’s desire was that contributions be made in his memory to, Campus Outreach, P.O. Box 2044, Dept. 2300, Memphis, TN, 38101. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Margaret "Dot" Stephens
Margaret "Dot" Stephens, age 79, of Morrow, Georgia died February 5, 2008. She was born
in Austell to the late Willis Jackson and Louise Cox. She was a member of Ash Street Baptist Church in Forest Park. She enjoyed gardening and last summer she distributed 1800 tomatoes to family, friends, and neighbors. She beat her record from the previous year of only 1200. She played and coached softball for many years, bowled in a league in Forest Park, and was Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She was a founding member of Forest Park Athletic Association and enjoyed traveling to her special place in Florida, Anna Marie Island. She was a "People Person”, but most important to her was her family. Mrs. Stephens was also preceded in death by her husband, John P. Stephens.
Mrs. Stephens is survived by her sons, John "Butch" Stephens of Hampton, David C. Stephens of Elkton, West Virginia, Willis L. Stephens of McDonough; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Willis Cox of Temple; sisters, Lois Lane of Brooks, Geneva Sandy of Savannah, and Georgia Mae Staples of Forest Park.
Funeral services were held on February 8 at the Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Rev. Frank Crumpler officiating. Interment Brooks Memorial Garden. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in charge of details.
Ronald Marvin Buchanan
Mr. Ronald Marvin Buchanan, age 59, of Stockbridge, Georgia died February 6, 2008. He was born
in Columbus, GA to the late Marvin and Pearl McRae Buchanan. He graduated from West Georgia College; retired after 34 years with the State of Georgia and was a sports enthusiast. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Buchanan.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Jon (Sarah) Buchanan of Knoxville, Tennessee, Brandon (Tina) Buchanan of McDonough, Brett (Dena) Buchanan of Jonesboro; six grandchildren; mother of his sons, Sue Ebdon of Hampton and many other close family and friends.
Services were held February 9 at the Sharon Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Lewis officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Mr. Buchanan. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Diane V. Harvill
Diane V. Harvill, age 57, of McDonough, Georgia died February 6, 2008. She was born
in McKinzie, Alabama. She was a very active member of Peoples Baptist Church and Academy. She was secretary for Atlanta Public Schools for 27 years and also worked in public relations for J.B. Hunt for seven years. She was an animal lover, especially enjoying her dogs Her nieces and nephews were her pride and joy, But most important to her were her parents, whom she looked after and cared for. Ms. Harvill was preceded in death by her mother, Frances Virginia Hallford Harvill.
Ms. Harvill is survived by her father, Johnny J. Harvill; sister, Betty Abercrombie; brother, John Harvill; nephew, Chris Abercrombie; niece, Jessica Abercrombie, all of McDonough, and nephew, John Harvill of Locust Grove.
Services were held February 8 at the Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Pastor David McCoy officiating. Interment College Park Cemetery. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.
Harvey Loyd Pearson
Mr. Harvey Loyd Pearson, age 69, of McDonough passed away February 8, 2008. He was born
in Lincoln County, Tennessee to the late Harvey Lee and Ethel Loraine Mills Pearson. He retired in 1990 after 30 years with Georgia Power and was a dedicated Pastor of the Stockbridge Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Pearson Flynn.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Pearson of McDonough; son, James Michael Pearson of Sharpsburg; daughter and son-in-law, Debroah Pearson (Randy) Landrum of Jonesboro; granddaughters, Amanda Landrum (Lee) Stockton and Ashley Landrum both of Jonesboro; four brothers and five sisters.
Services were conducted February 10 at the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home. Brother Ricky Holmen and Pastor Bobby House officiated. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Helen Wilkerson Cowart
Mrs. Helen Wilkerson Cowart, age 87, of McDonough, Georgia died February 9, 2008. In 1940 Helen married
Glynn Cowart of Blue Ridge, Georgia. Helen and Glynn lived and traveled and raised their sons in many parts of the United States before retiring to McDonough. Helen’s later years were not easy. She lost her sons to illness and accident, and nursed Glynn through blindness and decline. Her last three years were spent in an assisted living home in Decatur. Helen kept a brave and uplifting spirit, cheering those around her at Medlock Gardens Assisted Living by sharing snacks, jokes and time. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Glynn and her sons Glynn Jr. and Bill.
She is survived by her grandson Todd Cowart of Bartown Florida, her sisters Myrt Childs of Decatur, Georgia and Becky Sadler of Salem, Virginia and many nieces and nephew. Services were held February 12 at Haisten Funeral Home. Helen requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of Bethany Baptist Church in McDonough. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangments.
Gerald Franklin Childress
Mr. Gerald Franklin Childress, age 84, passed away February 10, 2008. Mr. Childress was born
December 15, 1923 in Fulton County to the late Laura Barker Childress and Walter H. Childress, Sr. Mr. Childress was a graduate of Georgia Tech and a member of Salem Baptist Church in McDonough.
Survivors include, children; Susan Childress Lawrence of Smyrna, Robert Alan and June Childress of Smyrna, Raymond Brian and Beverly of Grayson; grandchildren; Michael and Sara Lawrence of Stockbridge, Jeff and Eric Childress both of Grayson; great grandchildren; Lauren, Alec, and Alyssa Lawrence all of Smyrna.
Services will be held February 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Statham and Rev. Dan McKay officiating. Friends may visit the family Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund.
