W. Heyward Tuten
W. Heyward Tuten, 71, of Garden City, died Oct. 4 at Hospice Savannah.
He was born in Grays, S.C., and lived in Chatham County for more than 40 years. He retired from the Air Force after 34 years; he had worked as a communications technician. He was a lifetime member of Chatham Artillery and a member of First Baptist Church of Garden City, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and R.A.'s leader.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Glennis Tuten of Garden City; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Ray McClain of Savannah; a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Celeste Tuten of Nashville, Tenn.; a stepson, Bill Pyles of Beaumont, Texas; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Marion and Jean Tuten and Donald and Jean Tuten, all of Savannah; a sister, Myrtis Malphrus of Ridgeland; three grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alexander N. Vainas
Alexander Nicholas Vainas died Oct. 3 at Savannah Rehabilitation Center.
The Savannah native was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II who served in the Pacific. He was a graduate of Savannah High School and a past commander of American Legion Post No. 36 and VFW Post No. 660. He retired from the City of Savannah Water Department, having served as an inspector for more than 25 years, and from Great Dane Trailers after 12 years as a coordinator in the mailroom.
He was a member of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church, where he served as cantor for more than 50 years and was a member of the church council. The church honored him with a Tribute Luncheon in 1998.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Julie Katalanos Vainas of Savannah; a daughter, Paula M. Aldredge of Long Beach, Calif.; two sons, Nick A. Vainas of El Toro, Calif., and James A. Vainas of Savannah; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Tom R. Brissey Sr.
JESUP -- Tom R. Brissey Sr., 46, died Oct. 4 at home.
The Greenfield, S.C., native lived in Wayne County for the past seven years and was a project manager with R.B. Baker Construction Co. of Garden City. He was instrumental in the construction of the Altamaha River Bridge.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Lia N. Brissey of Jesup; two daughters, Amy Michelle Brissey of Dallas and Britney Noel Brissey of Jesup; a son, Thomas Richard Brissey Jr. of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; his mother, Carrie Louise Jackson of Easley, S.C.; a brother, William "Bill" Brissey Jr. of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Carol Herrin of Chatsworth and Diane Gillespie of Easley; and several nieces and nephews.

Brenda F. Martin
STATESBORO -- Brenda Faye Martin, 24, died Oct. 4 from injuries in an automobile accident in Bulloch County.
The Candler County native graduated from Metter High School in 1991. She was a Georgia Southern University student and attended the Open Door Worship Center.
SURVIVORS: two sons, Shawn A. and Jesse T. Tapley, both of Statesboro; her mother, Bernice S. Martin of Metter; two brothers, Ronald D. Martin of Twin City and Robert Wayne Martin of Metter; and three sisters, Diane Bryant of Portal and Linda Driggers and Wanda Wilkerson, both of Metter.

Frank L. Rewis
REIDSVILLE -- Frank L. Rewis, 74, died Oct. 5.
The Tattnall County native was a member of Reidsville United Methodist Church, a retired self-employed farmer and employee of the farming section of the Georgia Department of Corrections. He served in the Navy and the Merchant Marine during World War II.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Peggy Folsom Rewis of Reidsville; a brother, Charles Rewis of Reidsville; a sister, Marilyn F. Sigman of Holland, Pa.; an aunt, Ruth Rogers of Reidsville; four nephews, Jackie Trim, Eddie and Teddy Rewis and Alex Sigman; and a niece, Linda Mobley.

Rev. L.J. Chambliss
The Rev. Laula "L.J." Chambliss, 82, died Oct. 4 at Candler Hospital.
He was pastor of South Gardens Baptist Church for more than 29 years. When he retired in December 1990 he was elected pastor emeritus.
The Butler County, Ala., native previously served as pastors of churches in Alabama. He also served on the executive committee of the Georgia Baptist Convention, was moderator of the Savannah Baptist Association, chairman of its executive board and was on the board of trustees for Savannah Baptist Center.
He participated in eight trips of extensive travel and study in the Holy Land and in eight partnership evangelistic crusades through the Foreign Mission Board. One of those trips was to Brazil to help assemble and dedicate two chapels.
Chambliss also served as president of the Southside Optimist Club and was appointed by Optimist International as goodwill ambassador to Europe.
In 1990, then-Mayor John P. Rousakis proclaimed Aug. 25 as "The Rev. and Mrs. L.J. Chambliss Day" in Savannah.
Four years earlier, on Chambliss's 25th anniversary as South Gardens pastor, the mayor presented the couple with a key to the city and proclaimed June 22 "Reverend L.J. Chambliss Day" in recognition of the pastor's service to the community.
Chambliss attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and was the widower of Louise Duncan Chambliss.
He organized the Love in Action Group at South Gardens Baptist Church 15 years ago.
He was active in purchasing land for the Baptist Student Union at Armstrong Atlantic State University. He was a member of Savannah Ministerial Association and the Retired Ministers Association.
SURVIVORS: three daughters and sons-in-law, Sherrill Ann Blackwelder and C. Poe Blackwelder Jr. of Savannah, Nancy Lane and Roderick L. Lane III of Brunswick and Mary Alice and Gwindel E. Hamby of Anniston, Ala.; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Clyde A. Black Sr.
BRUNSWICK -- Clyde A. Black Sr., 72, died Sept. 14 at home.
The native of Lakehurst, N.J., lived in Brunswick since 1941. He was a millwright at Hercules Inc. and retired after 40 years. He was associated with Driggers Construction for 20 years and also with Coastal Hardware.
He was a member of Ocean Lodge No. 214, F&AM, Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar of the Commandary, Alee Shrine Temple and the Brunswick Shrine Club, where he served as president in 1971 and treasurer for nine years. He was a member of Glyndale Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Blanche K. Black of Brunswick; three sons, Clyde Black Jr. of Bankok, Thailand, Robert E. Black and Charles S. Black, both of Brunswick; a daughter, Nancy Houston of Brunswick; four brothers, Ralph I. Black Jr. of Joliette, Ill, Floyd H. Black of Seattle, John J. Black of Cookville, Tenn., and Donald V. Black of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a sister, Annabelle Franklin of Daytona Beach; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

William R. Blount
BLUFFTON -- William Risher "Ricky" Blount, 52, died Sept. 6 in Hardeeville.
The native of Birmingham, Ala., was a plumbing contractor and owner of Rick Blount Plumbing Co. He was a member of Bluffton United Methodist Church and served on many committees. He was a volunteer emergency medical technician and an assistant Boy Scout leader.
He was serving as a member of the Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals for the Town of Hilton Head.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Linda B. Blount; two sons, Jesse Arlo Blount of Bluffton and Brett Arthur Blount of Ridgeland; his stepmother, Winifred Blunt of Beaufort; and three stepbrothers, David Blount of Amarillo, Texas, Shelly Blount of Beaufort and Billy Blount of Atlanta.

Harold L. Chancey
ALMA -- Harold L. "Doc" Chancey, 83, died Sept. 16 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.
The native of Appling County lived most of his life in Bacon County. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Church and the widower of Bonnell Kinlaw Chancey.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Connie C. Johnson of Alma; two sons, William Billy Chancey of Alma and Larry Padgett Chancey of Augusta; a sister, Geraldine Carter of Savannah; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
