BLOOMINGDALE - Sgt. Norman Rock, retired, 60, died Oct. 14 at home.

The Flint, Mich., native had lived in Bloomingdale for a number of years. He retired from the Army and had served in the Vietnam War and in Saudi Arabia. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Linda Rock of Bloomingdale; two daughters, Connie Wilkie of Apex, N.C., and Melissa Carlyle of Ophalon, Ill.; three sons, Norman Andrew Rock II and Michael Rock, both of Clyo, Mich., and Dewey Randall Rock of Lawrenceville; his brother, Earl Rock of Michigan; two sisters, Edith Brysson of Grand Blanc, Mich., and Connie Hagadorn of Clyo, Mich.; and nine grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel, Pooler.

FUNERAL MASS: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel, Pooler.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 3 p.m. Tuesday in Rosemont Baptist Church cemetery near Soperton.

James Rowland

WAVERLY - James "Mack" Rowland, 52, died Oct. 13 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.

He was a former resident of Brunswick and a 1966 graduate of Glynn Academy. He was owner and operator of Rowland Body Shop for 20 years.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Reida M. Rowland of Waverly.

VISITATION: 4-6 p.m. today at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: 4 p.m. Monday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, burial in Palmetto Cemetery.

REMEMBRANCES: Camden County Humane Society.

Ida S. Benjamin

WHITE OAK -- Ida Sylvia Benjamin, 93, of Tarboro community died Jan. 27 in Brunswick.

She was born and educated in Wayne County. She moved to Camden County in 1939.

SURVIVORS: foster children and spouses, Valencia Hamilton, Marquis Samuel, Christopher Moore, Beatrice and Donald Smith, Irma and Memphis George, Annie Holmes and R.J. Moody.

SERVICE: 1 p.m. today at Jerusalem No. 1 Baptist Church, Tarboro community, burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, White Oak.

Roosevelt Boles

EARLY BRANCH, S.C. -- Roosevelt "Sonny" Boles, 64, died Jan. 31.

He was born in Hampton County. He was a member of Anna Laurel Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: six daughters, Barbara Gilbert, Rhonda Murdaugh, Linda Jones, all of Varnville, Diane Cuylear of Hampton, Felicia Curly of Early Branch and Sylvia Richardson of Charlotte, N.C.; four sons, Johnny Boles of Varnville, Roosevelt Boles Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Anthony Richardson of Early Branch and Michael Richardson of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, Hazemore Boles and Charlie Boles, both of Early Branch; three sisters, Queen Ester Thompson and Verneatha McBride, both of Early Branch, and Joyce Miles of Gardens Corner; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Washington's Funeral Home in Hampton.

SERVICE: 11 a.m. Sunday at Washington's Funeral Home, burial in Jerusalem cemetery in Cummings.

Joel M. Carpenter

WAYNESBORO -- Joel M. "Billy" Carpenter, 88, died Feb. 2 at Burke Medical Center.

He was born in Burke County. He was a retired bookkeeper for Neely & Co., and an insurance agent for Cotton States Insurance Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro. He was an honorary member of the Official Board of the First United Methodist Church. He was a 32 Degree Mason, a member of Waynesboro Masonic Lodge No. 274 and the Waynesboro Shrine Club.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Mary Allen Carpenter of Waynesboro; three sons, M. Ray Carpenter of Statesboro, Louis C. Carpenter of Waynesboro and Larry J. Carpenter of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Sarah C. Alvey of Augusta.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Sunday at DeLoach Funeral Home in Waynesboro, burial in Magnolia cemetery in Waynesboro .

Pearl G. Edwards

GUYTON -- Mrs. Pearl G. Edwards, 91, died Feb. 2 at Effingham County Extended Care Facility.

She was a native of Effingham County and a member of Pineora Baptist Church and a homemaker.

SURVIVORS: three sons, Mack Edwards and Carel Washington Edwards, both of Guyton, and Lee Edwards of Sylvania; two daughters, Stella Evelyn Cook of Springfield and Myrtle Grace Huncke of Oliver ; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Riggs Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Sunday at Riggs Funeral Home, burial in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

John C. Gardner Sr.

John C. Gardner Sr., 81, died Feb. 2 at Azalealand Convalescent Center under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc.

He was born in Calhoun County, S.C., and was a lifelong resident of Savannah, and a graduate of Savannah High School and the University of Georgia with a degree in business administration. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army- Aircorps as colonel in India and China.

He was retired owner and manager of Skidaway Ace Hardware Co. and Gardner's Ace Hardware Co. He was president of the Georgia-Florida Hardware Association in the middle 1960s.

He served on the Executive Board of the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship. He was a longtime member of Memorial Baptist Church, and was a member and served on the Board of Elders of the Cornerstone Church, 425 West Montgomery Crossroad.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Marjorie Sheffield Gardner of Savannah; a son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Cathy Gardner Jr. of Savannah; a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Bill George of Easley, S.C.; three granddaughters, Laura and Jennifer Gardner, both of Savannah, and Kimberly Taylor of Raleigh, N.C.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.

FUNERAL : 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cornerstone Church, burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Deidre A. Green

Mrs. Deidre Lynee Arnold Green, 39, died Jan. 31 at Haven House Hospice in Atlanta.

She was born in New York and attended the public schools there, and the school of electricians. She was an electrician. She was baptized at St. John Baptist Church in Savannah and joined Turner Chapel AME Church in Atlanta when she moved there over a year ago.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Gregory Green of Atlanta; two daughters, Deshawn L. Chambers of Atlanta and Alexandria E. McDonald of Norcross; a stepdaughter, Tracie Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio; four stepsons, Greg Johnson, Arthur, Craig and Rashan Wilson, all of Cleveland; her parents, George and Joanna Martin of Savannah; two sisters, Diane Davis of Lithonia and Sharyce Gramham of College Park; a brother, Nathaniel Kendrick of Atlanta.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Bynes-Royall Funeral Home in Savannah.

SERVICE: 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Baptist Church, burial in Beaufort National Cemetery.

George T. Groover

CHARLESTON -- George T. Groover died Jan. 24 at Roper General Hospital.

He was born in Statesboro and was a former tavern owner. He was an alumnus of the University of Georgia and a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: two brothers, Dan Groover of Atlanta and John Groover of Americus, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

GRAVESIDE MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Sunday in Eastside Cemetery.

Martha B. Harris

Mrs. Martha Bivins Harris, 74, died Feb. 2 at Candler Hospital.

She was born in Macon and had lived in Savannah for the past 32 years. She worked as a cashier.

SURVIVORS: a son, Alton Harris of Savannah; three daughters, Dorothy Proper of Norfolk, Va., Yevonne White and Michelle Frost, both of Savannah; two brothers, Frank and Stanley Bivins, both of Americus; three sisters, Evelyn Kidd, Susie Price and Bessie Yarborough, all of Elelleville; 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.

Edrie H. Jordan

ALMA -- Edrie H. Jordan, 92, died Feb. 1.

She was born in Bacon County and was retired from Bacon County school system after teaching more than 40 years. She was a graduate of Georgia Southern University and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, American Association of Retired Persons, Alma Grandmothers Club, Rockingham Home Makers Club, 60's and Over Group, First Baptist Church, Friendship Sunday School Class, Baptist Women's Missionary Society and was a charter member of Bacon County Eastern Star. She was the widow of Randal Lee Jordan.

SURVIVORS: two daughters and a son-in-law, Pat Taylor and Kaye Williams and Tillman, all of Alma; a brother, Clyde Harrison of Alma; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. today at Deen-Jackson Funeral Home, Alma, burial in Pinelawn Memorial Gardens.
