Elder Dewey Hugh Lee
BURTON, S.C. -- Elder Dewey Hugh Lee, 100, died June 4 at home.
He was born in Allendale. He was the widower of Ruth Jones Lee and Daisy Wright Lee. After moving to Beaufort, he became a member of the New Church of Christ, served as a deacon and an elder and in 1945 was ordained into the ministry. He served as pastor of Burton New Church of Christ (Briarthicket), Hilton Head New Church of Christ, Hickory Hill New Church of Christ, Sheldon New Church of Christ, Furman New Church of Christ and Gray's Hill New Church of Christ. At age 70, and after 33 years of service, he retired from civil service at Pump Island.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Davies Albergottie of Gardens Corner; a sister, Walterine Harden of Allendale; two sisters-in-law, Estelle Jones of Savannah and Dorothy Jones of New York City; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Glenda Diane Halstead, 46, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2002, under the care of Hospice of Savannah. A native of Savannah, Diane lived here her entire life. She worked for the years before becoming employed by Waste Management. She was preceded in death by her father, Hershel Lamar Halstead. A. Champion McAlpin Jr.
Aaron Champion McAlpin, Jr., 85, of Savannah, Georgia, after a brief illness, passed away on Saturday morning, November 30, 2002, at St. Josephs Hospital. He is survived by Pauline McAlpin, his wife of 50 years. His other survivors include his brother, Kirk Martin McAlpin of Atlanta; his nieces and nephews, Lila and Kirk McAlpin, Jr., of Atlanta, Lea and Morgan McAlpin of Savannah, and Margaret and Jack Margeson, Jr., of Atlanta; and ten grandnieces and grandnephews. He was the son of the late Aaron Champion McAlpin and Margaret Martin McAlpin. He spent his early years in New Jersey, where his father was associated with Dupont. At age 12, he returned with his family to "Kirks Bluff" in Bluffton, SC, his mothers birthplace, where he attended Bluffton Junior High School for a year before moving to Savannah, whereupon he attended and graduated from Savannah High School. He served in the United States Army and Air Force from 1939 to 1945 and was stationed in Europe with the Eighth Air Force. He was associated in sales with Delta Air Lines in both Savannah and Atlanta. He and his wife, desiring to return home, moved back to Savannah, where he served for many years as Registrar of the Chatham County Health Department, until his retirement. He is a descendent of late Henry McAlpin of Savannah, owner of the Hermitage Plantation at which the historic "Savannah gray" bricks were manufactured. He was a 50-year member of the Saint Andrews Society of Savannah. Graveside Service: 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, December 4, at Laurel Grove Cemetery. Beaufort, SC - Jennie Lee Weekley Mixson, 95, widow of Sterley Mixson, died Sunday, December 1, 2002, at Bayview Nursing Center. Mrs. Mixson was born October 18, 1907, in Hampton, SC, to the late Jasper Weekley and Addie Crews Weekley. Rosetta Davis-Bryan, 94, died November 29, 2002, at Savannah Rehabilitation Center. A native of Milledgeville, she resided in Savannah for many years as the wife of the Rev. Bryan, a noted clergyman, who preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Philip Monumental AME Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the Annie Jaudon Missionary Society. She was also a member of the AME Wives and Widows Association of the local, state, and connectional groups, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Neighborhood Association. Ross Robinson, 38, Golfer, Painter, Fisherman, Continual Laugh Maker, Encourager, Seeker, Storyteller, Crazy T-shirt Monster, Irreplaceable Son, Beloved Brother, Favorite Uncle, Nephew, Friend, and Anchor for the STARS, died early Sunday morning, November 24, in Savannah, following a senseless shooting. Ross, a master house painter, has been called home to do some re-work on his Fathers House. Ross lived many lives: born June 24, 1964, in Teaneck, NJ, grew up in Grand Rapids, MI, and St. Louis, MO; he lived in Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach, SC. Ross never met a stranger and was dearly loved by all who were blessed to have known him. Some light has gone from the world and he will be sorely missed. Anita L. Raskin
Anita L. Raskin died Friday, November 29, 2002, at her residence. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, and was educated in the public schools. She worked as a nurses aide at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital during WWII and later in the office of famed radio personality, Fred Allen. In 1946, she wed local attorney, Sidney L. Raskin, and moved to Savannah, where they reared four children. She was a widely published author of light verse. Her work appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and other magazines of that caliber. She was an active member and President of the local chapter of the Georgia Poetry Society. She wrote the introduction to the popular guidebook, Sojourn in Savannah. She worked tirelessly for the Brandeis Womens Book sale and was on the board of the Savannah Public Library, where she recorded many books on tape for the blind. She was a founder and member of the Board of Directors of City Lights Theater Company and was a judge of the Annual Savannah Playwrights competition. She was a nationally known dealer in used and rare books and since 1978 operated the popular downtown shop, The Book Lady, a nickname she acquired at garage sales where people would say, "Here comes the book lady." She was a longtime member of Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob synagogue and also of Temple Mickve Israel. She was a member of the B. B. Jacob Sisterhood and a life member of Hadassah. Greenville, SC - James Quitman Carter, 86, formerly of Savannah, died Friday, November 29, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Alma on May 18, 1916, and had resided at 334 Stephenson Ave. in Savannah until moving to Greenville, SC, in September of 2001. He was the son the late George and Linnie Bennett Carter, was a graduate of Alma High School, and retired from J. Q. Carter Furniture Company. He was a member of Landrum Lodge #48, F. & A. M., for 50 years. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U. S. Army, and he was part of the occupation forces in Japan.
