Thomas Edgar Slater

Thomas Edgar “Ed” Slater, 84, of Easy Street, Toccoa, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Friendship Nursing Center in Cleveland.

Born Oct. 7, 1919 in Hart County, he lived most of his life in Stephens County. He was a son of the late William Hosea and Beulah Junkins Slater and was the widower of Leonia Slocum Slater. He was retired from Trogdon Furniture Company. He was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church, the Benjamin Sunday School Class, and served as a deacon of the church for a number of years.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 13, at Zebulon Baptist Church. Dr. Wade Bridges and the Rev. Joel Bradberry officiated. Interment followed in Middle River Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, William Slater of Eastanollee; two daughters, Martha Gilbert of Cocoa, Fla. and Mary Ann Carter of Salt Lake City, Utah; a sister, Ernestine Murphy of Greenville, S.C.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Tim Slater, Rusty Edmonds, Patrick Carter, Scott Carter, Blake Lewallen and Kirt Garmon.

Whitlock Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Josh Payne

Joshua David “Josh” Payne, 25, of Eastanollee, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Born April 17, 1979 in Anderson County, S.C., he was a son of James David and Sarepta Ray Payne. Josh was a graduate of Stephens County High School and University of Georgia. He was employed in management at Sears in Athens and was a member of Tom’s Creek Baptist Church. Josh was an organ donor and gave the gift of life to six people. He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Roy Payne and Henry Ray.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, at Tom’s Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Wayne Marcus and Clack Stubbs will officiate.

Survivors include his parents, James and Sarepta Payne; a sister, Erin Payne of Eastanollee; grandmothers, Mary Ray of Eastanollee and Jessie Payne of Toccoa. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Lane Wood, Dwight Payne, Allan Herron, David O’Bryant, Tracy Pritchett and Logan Potterf. Co-workers at Sears and friends will serve as honorary escort.

Memorials may be made to The Josh Payne Scholarship Fund, c/o Bonnie S. Jordan, Route 1, Box 1050, Toccoa, GA 30577.

Family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15.

Daniel M. Bartlett

Daniel M. “Dan” Bartlett, 78, of Hartwell, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 14, 1925 in Hart County, he was the son of the late William Arnold Bartlett and Annie Adams Bartlett. He was retired from Poinsetta Lumber Company and a former inspector for Singer Plant of Anderson. He was a cattle farmer, a member of the Nancy Hart Masonic Lodge #690, Hart County Camp of the Woodman of the World and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 10, in the chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home. The Rev. Sam Dulaney officiated. Interment followed in Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Parker Bartlett of the home; two sisters, Edna Brown and Jo Garner, both of Bowersville, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by nine brothers, Milton Bartlett, Thomas Bartlett, Dorsey Bartlett, Loyd Bartlett, Robert Bartlett, Pete Bartlett, Harold “Buddy” Bartlett, Billy Bartlett and George Bartlett.

Strickland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jannette King Smith

Jannette King Smith, 78, of Shoal Creek Road, Lavonia, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Hart County Hospital.

Born April 11, 1926 in Hart County, she was a daughter of the late Eura A. and Bessie Reed King. She was a homemaker, beautician and pianist. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and the U.M.W.; she was a former Sunday School teacher, choir member and served on the official board of the church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Smith.

Funeral services were held Satuday, May 8, in the chapel of Hamby Funeral Home. The Rev. Hubert Ellison officiated. Musical selections were rendered by Mrs. Vivian Young, vocalist accompanied by Mrs. Donna Dickson. Arrangements concerning interment will be announced later.

Survivors include her husband, James C. Smith of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Preston Wood of Lavonia; brother, Jerry L. King of Lavonia; two grandsons, David J. Roberts and Austin Wood.

Hamby Funeral Home, Lavonia, was in charge of arrangements.

Zimmie Ruth Thomason

Zimmie Ruth Langston Thomason, 86, of Carnesville, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at the Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.

Born Oct. 30, 1917 in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Ira Gunnels and Lula Mae Payne Langston. She was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. She was married March 11, 1934 to the late Omer Willis Thomason. She was the mother of the late Bobby Joe Thomason and was also preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Hensley and Erwin Langston, and sisters, Edna, Langston, Lorene Shellnut, Mary Alice Short, Maggie Brown and Lula Mae Gillespie.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 9, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ryan Seawright and Marcus Martin officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Evelyn Thomason of Mt. Airy, Billy Joe and Maxine Thomason of Carnesville, Melvin and Mary Belle Thomason of Carnesville; three grandchildren, Jerry and Teresa Thomason of Mt. Airy, Janet and Larry Parham of Mt. Airy and Melva and Bryan Andrews of Martin; three great-grandchildren, Julia Thomason, Andrea Thomason and Brittany Parham.

Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville, was in charge of arrangements.

Junior Lee Pruitt

Junior Lee Pruitt, 74, of Carnesville, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the Brown Convalescent Center in Royston.

Born Dec. 24, 1929 in Banks County, he was the son of the late Noah Lee and Flora Smith Pruitt. He was a retired mechanic with the Georgia Department of Transportation. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Omer Lee Pruitt, J.W. Pruitt and Troy D. Pruitt, and a sister, Ida Barnett.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 6, at the B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel of the Ginn Funeral Home. The Rev. Leon Carson officiated. Interment followed in the Nail’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Lewallen Pruitt of Cornelia; one daughter, Amy Ramey of Carnesville; two brothers, Talmadge Pruitt of Baldwin and Max Pruitt of Carnesville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ginn Funeral Home was in charge of arrancements.

Esther M. Vitruk-Shirk

Esther M. Vitruk-Shirk, 74, of Watkinsville, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004.

She was the daughter of the late Floyd and Lucy Griswold. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Curtis Shirk and Joseph Vitruk, and her son, Joseph William Vitruk.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 12, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Athens.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Frances Vitruk Gibson and Philip G. Gibson; grandchildren, Ava Marie, Seth and Kate Gibson; sisters, Bernice Collins, Cleda Smith and Persis Johnson, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Hospice House, 1500 Oglethorpe Ave., Suite 200-C Athens, GA 30606 or Emmanuel Thrift House.

Ernest Mabry

Ernest Mabry of Jasper, widower of Edna Spears Mabry, died Monday, May 10, 2004, in Jasper.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 13, at the First Baptist Church of Jasper. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Local survivors include several nieces, nephews and other relatives in Stephens and Franklin counties.

Roper Funeral Home, Jasper, was in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Spears Hudson

Retired textile inspector

Margaret Lucille Andrews Spears Hudson, 90, of Hwy. 145, Carnesville, died Friday, Aug. 13 at her home.

Born June 30, 1914 in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Doc and Lilly Junkins Andrews. She was a retired textile inspector and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Roy E. Spears, and the late Allen Hudson. She also was preceded in death by sisters, Joy Adams, Osteen Murphy and Blanche Owens.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 16, at Liberty Baptist Church. The Revs. Todd West and Kirt Mitchell officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Marie Hilley of Danielsville; one son, Harry Spears of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one sister, Mozelle A. Ward of Carnesville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

James Thomas McLeod Sr.

Wadley, S.C. resident

James Thomas "Cowboy" McLeod Sr., 65, of Wadley, S.C. died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004 at the home of his daughter in Anderson, S.C.

A son of the late Thomas Williford and Ruth Ella Edwards McLeod, he was born Sept. 19, 1938 in Manatee County, Fla. He was retired from the Fulghum Company in Wadley with more than 40 years of service. He was a resident of Wadley for many years. He was a member of Middleton Road Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Annette Knight.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 15, from the McDougald Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Brian Darrah officiated. Interment followed in Foster Memorial Gardens in Wadley.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Sue Loudermilk McLeod of Wadley; a daughter, Dorothy Cleveland of Anderson, S.C.; a son, James Thomas McLeod of North Augusts, S.C.; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; his mother-in-lae, Evelyn Scott Loudermilk of Toccoa.

Memorials may be made to the Middleton Road Baptist Church Building Fund, 1705 Middleton Road, Anderson, S.C. 29624.
