DEARING, Ga. - Mr. John Charles Hilliard, 38, entered into rest Tuesday, May 6, 2008.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2008, at the Fort Creek Baptist cemetery with Dr. Phil Bray officiating.

Mr. Hilliard was born in Richmond County, but lived in Dearing for the past eight years. He was a truck driver for Advance Auto Parts.

Survivors include his wife: Amy Story Hilliard, Dearing; son: John Charles Hilliard, Jr., Dearing; daughters: Nicole Hilliard, Grovetown, Casey Anna-Marie Hilliard, Dearing; mother: Joanne Duffie; brother: Joseph Hilliard.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society-Relay for Life in McDuffie County.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Charlie Samuels

HARLEM, Ga. - Funeral service for Mr. Charlie Samuels, 66, of Harlem, was held Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Simonia Baptist Church, Appling, with the Rev. Ernest Turner, Sr., officiating. Interment was in the churchyard cemetery.

Survivors are former wife, Annie Pearl Samuels, Harlem; two daughters, Deborah (Danny) Hogan, and Linda (Larry) Dorsey; two sons, Earnest (Kenya) Samuels, and Cleveland (Erica) Samuels all of Harlem; stepdaughter, Sharicka Samuels of Atlanta; four sisters, Beatrice Johnson, Georgia Lou (Charlie) Johnson, Rosetta (Perrie) Gray all of Harlem, Ella Mae Samuels, Grovetown; seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Joe D. Young

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Joe D. Young, 77, beloved husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Gay Young, died Friday, May 9, 2008, at his residence.

Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 12, in Westview cemetery with the Revs. John McMillan and Melissa Young Weathers officiating.

Mr. Young was a native of Stone Mountain, but had lived most of his life in Thomson. He was a retired paint contractor, an Army Veteran of the Korean War and a life member of the V.F.W. Post 6672. He was a member of the J. Foster Young Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Gay Young, Thomson; three sons, Joseph D. Young Jr., Charles Foster Young, and Jeffery Thomas Young, all of Thomson; three grandchildren, Amy Young, Florida, Brooke Young, N. Augusta, and River Young, Dearing; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Earl "Doodle" Smith

GIBSON, Ga. - Mr. Earl "Doodle" Smith, 63, of Gibson, entered into rest Monday, February 25, 2008. He was the beloved husband of 43 years to Vivian Swint Smith.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Tommy Pulliam and Tommy Harwell officiating. Internment followed at Magnolia Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born in Warren County but lived most of his life in Glascock County. He was the son of the late Shady Earl Smith and the late Mary Laura Chalker Williford. He was retired from Georgia Pacific after 31 years as a supervisor. Mr. Smith was a member of the Magnolia Baptist Church.

Survivors include: Wife: Vivian Smith, Gibson; sister: Carolyn Padgett (Hill), Warrenton; mother-in-law: Corene Todd, Gibson; sister-in-law: Elaine Gilmer (Allen), Gibson; nephew: Michael Gilmer (Stephanie), Gibson; great nephew and niece: Breanna and Boone Gilmer; several other nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith was also preceded in death by his son Jimmy Smith and sisters Hazel Smith Hunnicutt and Erlene Smith Padgett.

Mrs. Dorothy Smith

THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Dorothy Smith, 73, beloved wife of Mr. Fay Smith, died Wednesday, December 26, 2007, in the Select Specialty Hospital in Augusta.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 29, in the Sweetwater Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Garvin and J.B. Redd officiating. Burial was in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Smith was a native and lifelong resident of McDuffie County. She was a retired paraprofessional from Maxwell Elementary. She was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Fay Smith, Thomson; her two sons and daughter-in-laws, Sidney and Elisa Smith, and Steven and Shelley Smith, all of Thomson; her five grandchildren, Dayton Smith, Richard Smith, Matt Smith, Austin Smith, and Megan Smith, all of Thomson; her great-grandchild, Cameron Smith; four sister-in-laws, Virginia Hauck, Lawana Harris, Sharon Smith, and Dr. Faye Montgomery; three brother-in-laws, Jimmy Wilson, Eldon Smith, and Dr. Howard McCall; and two loving and devoted friends, Elizabeth Richards and Margolese Long.

Pallbearers were Wayne Chalker, Gene Jones, Roy Brunner, Bob Knox Jr., Buzzy Dent, and Ricky McCorkle.

Rev. Jack E. Fuqua, Sr.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Reverend Jack E. Fuqua, Sr., beloved husband of Anita Fuqua, entered into rest Thursday, February 7, 2008.

Rev. Fuqua was born in Nashville, Tenn., on March 17, 1932, to Annie Mai Greer Fuqua and Haskell Luther Fuqua. Rev. Fuqua earned a baseball scholarship to David Lipscomb University in Nashville; there he received a B.S. degree in social studies and physical education with the desire to be a high school teacher and coach. He coached football, basketball, baseball and taught history and civics at various schools in Tennessee. He continued in the coaching and teaching field while attending Peabody-Vanderbilt University in pursuit of a M.A. degree in education. He received his M.A. degree in secondary school administration from Peabody-Vanderbilt. He continued teaching and coaching at various high schools including Darlington School in Rome, Ga. He was employed by Texaco, Inc., for 16 years. He felt the call to ministry at 46 years of age. He took a whole year, praying, seeking and investigating the possibilities of attending Seminary. He graduated in 1981 from Vanderbilt (Oberlin) School of Divinity with a M. Div. degree with a major in pastoral counseling. He later obtained a Doctorate of Theology and was ordained as a Baptist Pastor by First Baptist Church in Nashville, Tenn. He then received a call as Pastor to Woodlawn Baptist Church in Rome, Ga., and served Darlington school as Chaplain, Coach and Bible Teacher. While there, he established the Darlington's first counseling program. He began working with Equifax, Inc., and joined the Martinez United Methodist Church in 1989. He was asked by District Superintendent to take a circuit of three churches in Warren County as a part-time local pastor. He enjoyed working with churches in Warren County, Camak, Macedonia and Mesena. He returned to Seminary and was ordained as an Elder in the United Methodist Church at age 63 and became pastor at Burns United Methodist Church from 1995-1999. He retired due to health reasons in 1999. After one year of retirement, he was appointed to serve White Oak United Methodist Church in Appling, where he served from 2000 to 2004. He returned to Burns Memorial United Methodist Church to serve as Pastor Emeritus at the time of his death.

Funeral services were held at Burns Memorial United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, February 10, 2008 with Pastor Bill Burch officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife; sons Jennings Luther Fuqua, Spokane, Wash., William Denton Fuqua, Spokane, Wash., and Robert Christian Fuqua, Augusta; grandchildren, Margaret Anne Fuqua, Katie Fuqua, Marye Fuqua, Jessica Fuqua and Gabrielle Fuqua and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

He is preceded in death by his son Jack E. Fuqua, Jr.

Mr. Samuel Derrick Conner

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Samuel Derrick Conner, 66, son of the late Seth David and Inez Rebecca Davis Conner, entered into rest April 30, 2008, at Augusta Hills Health Care.

Graveside services were held Saturday, May 3, at 1 pm at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown, with the Rev. C.E. "Butch" Baston and Chaplain Pauline Hughes officiating.

Mr. Conner was a native of Richmond County and was a painter.

Survivors include son, Derrick Rick Conner, of Augusta; grandchildren Austin Blake Conner and Ziarra Riddell; brothers, W.J. "Bubber" Conner, Thomson, Edward Allen Conner, Hephzibah, and sisters Carol Redd, Augusta, and Mary Ellen Case, Calvert City, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Anne Woods.

Pallbearers were Derrick R. Conner, Jessie Redd, Paul Conner, Cameron Wespy, Danny Conner, David Case.

Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mr. John Cecil "J.C." Johnson

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. John Cecil "J.C." Johnson, 93, husband of the late Elsie C. Johnson, entered into rest on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at University Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 23, 2008, in the Belair Road Chapel of Platt's Funeral Home at 2 p.m. with Dr. K.C. Stevens officiating. Interment followed in Westover Memorial Park.

Survivors include one son, James Johnson and his wife Diane of Evans; one sister, Evel Johnson of Warrenton; three grandchildren, Christi Wieters, Renee Duckworth, Amber Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Kayla and Sarah Wieters, Angel McDonald, and Mandie Duckworth.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Emory Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a retired home builder and a member of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church. He was a member of the Local Carpenters Local #283 for more than 60 years. He was discharged from the CCC Camp in 1938 after three years of service.

Pallbearers were Todd Wieters, Tim Duckworth, Frank Johnson, Steven Bailey, Harris Atkins, Steven Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were the Jack Brown Sunday School Class.

Donations may be made to the Crawford Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund at 507 Crawford Ave. Augusta, GA. 30904

HARLEM, Ga. - Funeral service for Mr. Leonard Morris, 54, Harlem, was held on Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Cobb Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ben Gibson, Sr. officiating. Interment was in the churchyard cemetery.

Survivors: a daughter, Topeka Gresham (Calvin); a goddaughter, Tankeyia Collins, Thomson; a son, Leonard Morris, Jr. (Jackie), all of Thomson; a loving mother, Hattie Mae Crenshaw, Atlanta; a loving, devoted and caring grandmother, Daisy Mae Johnson, Harlem; five sisters, Patricia Dunn, Thomson, Velma Allen, Brunswick, Eddie Mae Crenshaw, Thomson, Cathy Johnson (James), Atlanta, Gloria Gibson (Ben), Snellville; two brothers, Charlie Kinsley, Thomson, and Edward Crenshaw, Atlanta; two grandchildren; one god-grandchild; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends.

Mr. Willie E. Green

MESENA, Ga. - Mr. Willie E. Green, 85, entered into rest on April 17, 2008, at the Warrenton Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Green was retired from Martin Marietta Aggregates and a member of New Zion Hill A.M.E. Church.

He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife Eva, a daughter, Shirley Reese of Mesena, three sons, John Edward (Judy) Green, Sr., Willie James (Janice) Green of Atlanta and Vincent (Pamela) Green of Mesena, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at New Zion Hill A.M.E. Church with Rev. Latham Mills officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Charlie Willie Simons, Jr.

YULEE, Fla. - Mr. Charlie Willie Simons, Jr., 60, of Yulee, Fla., passed away Sunday, February 24, 2008, at Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla.

He was a native of Warrenton, and moved to Yulee, Fla., 20 years ago from Thomson. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Simons was a Vietnam veteran, serving with the U.S. Army.

He is survived by two sons, Scott Simons (Crystal) of Folkston, Ga. and Ryan Simons, also of Folkston; a daughter, Samantha Simons of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; one brother, Vernon Simons (Glenda) of Thomson; a sister, Linda Johnson (William) of Washington, Ga.; three grandchildren; an aunt, Dot Jones; uncle, Walter Jones; and other family and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Stephens Family Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home in Yulee, Fla., with Rev. Frank Camarotti officiating. Interment followed in Green Pine cemetery with military honors presented by the U.S. Army. He was a good man who will always be loved and missed by his family.

Ms. LaShonda Denise Williams

THOMSON, Ga. - Funeral services for Ms. LaShonda Denise Williams, 23, of Thomson, were held on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Pastor Rev. Darnell Brantley, Sr., officiating.

Mrs. Lula Mae Howard

NORWOOD, Ga. - Funeral services for Mrs. Lula Mae Howard, age 97, of Norwood, were held on Friday, February 8, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Norwood with the Rev. Bennie Bouyer officiating. Interment was held in the churchyard cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 81 years, Rev. Willie James Howard, Norwood; one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Mae Moss, Norwood; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Joseph, Mrs. Celestine Suber, both of Warrenton, and Ms. Janie Helen Daniels, Brooklyn, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; 87 great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
