Mrs. Mary Doughty Zachary
Retired Teacher
AUGUSTA and THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Mary Doughty Zachary, 75, of Augusta and Thomson entered into rest April 4, 2006.
She was the beloved daughter of the late Eben Wesley Doughty and the late Dorothy Hunt Doughty. Mrs. Zachary was born in 1930 in Augusta. She grew up in Thomson, before going off to college. She attended Bob Jones University where she received a B. A. degree. She married Glenn T. Zachary whom she met at Bob Jones University. After graduation and marriage, they lived in Greenville, S.C., and then moved to Southern California where they were involved in ministry work for many years.

Mary is survived by four children, Dolly Zachary Rouse, Malinda Zachary Putnam, Glenn Thomas Zachary, Jr., and Bonnie Zachary-Yurk, and by 12 grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Mary made a difference in many, many people's lives, whether assisting them to improve their health, providing them with aid in times of need, comfort and steadfast friendship, listening and emotional support, common sense advice, or spiritual encouragement. An early member of the National Health Federation, she was a collaborator with Adele Davis and Gladys Lindberg. Mary was devoted to learning about nutrition and natural healing methods and wanted to educate people about the importance of diet and nutrition. She was way ahead of her time. Mary taught English and reading and also assisted with classes for developmentally disabled students at Redondo Urnon High School in Redondo Beach, Calif. She also participated in a masters theater arts program at the University of Southern California, leading to her giving delightful acting performances in local community theater and the Edinborough Theatre Festival in Scotland.

Mary drew much strength and inspiration from her forbears, to whom she gave much honor and credit. Her grandmother, Maude Cox Hunt, was a charter member of the Thomson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her mother, Dorothy Hunt Doughty, was a respected artist trained at the High College of the Arts in Baltimore, MD., as well as an accomplished businesswoman. Her grandfather, Clyde Forest Hunt, was a prominent businessman in Thomson, with interests in forestry and banking, and recognition for generosity and contributions to the community.

The embodiment of Christian love, compassion and humility, Mary always put others' needs before hers. Mary kept two residences, one in Hermosa Beach, Calif., and one in Augusta. Her homes were always welcoming places, always spiritual centers, and always lots of fun to visit. Mary was loved by little children, teenagers, young parents, business people, folks with hard lives, the elderly and the infirm. She always was there for them. A devout student of the Bible, with an encyclopedic mind, she and her children sang together throughout her life. She loved singing the old hymns. Mary attended church at Westside Baptist Church in Martinez, where she was a member when she went to be with the Lord. Mary also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Thomson for many years, and on the West Coast attended Rolling Hills Covenant Church in Rolling Hills, Calif. Most recently Mary has been spending her Sunday morning worship services at the Thomson home of Miss Elizabeth Reese, 92, in her garden, singing hymns and giving praise.

Memorial services were held at 4 p.m. , Wednesday , April 12, 2006 at Westside Baptist Church with Rev. Robert J. Lehn officiating. A private interment was held at Westview cemetery in Thomson.

Donations may be made to the Music Fund of the Westside Baptist Church, 261 Flowing Wells Rd., Martinez, GA 30907, 706-868-5982, in honor of Mary Zachary and her love for the original hymns of the Christian faith.
