Mr. Barry G. Hanson

THOMSON, Ga.- Mr. Barry G. Hanson, 56, of Thomson, entered into rest July 11, 2004, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Lloyd and Sibyl Gibbs Hanson.
He is survived by two daughters, Angie H. (Chris) Rogers and Kelli H. (Jay) Poston, both of Thomson; a brother, Charles T. (JoAnne) Hanson, Sr. of Thomson; two sisters, Betty H. (Jerry) Poole of Tennessee and Charlotte H. (Larry) Hinman of Thomson; four grandchildren, Allen and Dozier Rogers and Drue and Sibyl Poston; mother of his children, Barbara E. Hanson; a loving friend, Vonnie Gunby and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hanson was a lifelong resident of Thomson. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era and was an engineer with CSX Railroad.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Drs. James C. Elder, Jr. and James Ramsey officiating.

Pallbearers were Chuck Moye, Mike Norris, George Smith, Wayne Smith, Ralph Starling, J.B. Williams, Kyle Willingham and Jimmy Young.

Mr. Ronald 'Ronnie' Boyd Honeycutt
THOMSON, Ga.- Mr. Ronald 'Ronnie' Boyd Honeycutt, 58, of Thomson., entered into rest on July 9, 2004 after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He was the son of the late Walter H. and Hazel Smith Honeycutt.
He is survived by his son, Ron Honeycutt of Martinez, and his two sisters, Vicki H. (Michael) O'Neal of Thomson. and Penny Ellis of Hot Springs, N.C.

Mr. Honeycutt was born in Warren County and lived in Martinez before moving to Thomson seven years ago. He was self-employed, a Mason and a member of Magnolia Baptist Church in Gibson.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., on Monday, July 12, 2004 at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Larron Pilgrim officiating.

Mr. Ralph M. Mitchell
Retired Postmaster
MITCHELL, Ga.- Mr. Ralph M. Mitchell, 74, of Mitchell (Jewell Community), entered into rest July 6, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Jessie Jackson Mitchell.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Jewell Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. Terry Braswell, Jr. officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie J. Mitchell; two sons, John A. (Gloria) Mitchell of Mesena, Lowell Wayne Mitchell of Thomson; a daughter, LeGaye M. (Dickie) Lindley of Honea Path, S.C.; two brothers, Alan J. Mitchell of Gordon, Billy Wayne Mitchell of Ringold; two sisters, Doris M. Gockel, Jewell, Elizabeth M. Spivey of Statesboro and two grandsons, Kent Dooling and Jackson Lindley.

Mr. Mitchell was a lifelong resident of the Jewell Community and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John O. Mitchell. He was a retired Postmaster from Crawfordville and served over 30 years in the postal service. Mr. Mitchell served in the U.S. Navy and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Jewell Baptist Church and was also a former member of the VFW and the American Legion.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jewell Baptist Church cemetery Foundation, c/o Doris Gockel, P.O. Box 387, Jewell, Ga. 31045.

Mrs. Susie M. Perdue
Homemaker
THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Susie M. Perdue, 93, widow of Mr. Clinton Perdue, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating.

Mrs. Perdue was a native of McDuffie County. She was a homemaker and a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Catherine Young, Thomson; her son, Mr. Fred Perdue, Thomson; four brothers, Rubin McGahee, Jacksonville, Fla., Joseph McGahee and Eugene McGahee, both of Columbus and Bobby McGahee, Thomson; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Byrnece Purcell Knox Swanson
Distinguished Artist
EVANS, Ga.- Mrs. Byrnece Purcell Knox Swanson, died at Brandon Wilde on July 9, 2004.
She was born May 3, 1912, in Metter, Candler County, Ga., where her father, Thomas Malcolm Purcell, organized the public schools. She spent most of her early years in Cochran, Ga., where her father was principal of the Cochran city schools.

Mrs. Swanson was educated at the University of Georgia, graduating with a B.A. in art in 1933.

Following graduation from college, she moved to Thomson, Ga., to teach school and later married Wyckliffe A. Knox of Thomson.

She and Mr. Knox had a daughter, Harriet, who predeceased her mother, and a son, Wyckliffe A. Knox, Jr.; of Augusta. Mrs. Swanson was a homemaker and a distinguished artist. Her paintings, using all mediums, were widely enjoyed by friends and family. She also painted china and in later years developed expertise in portraitures.

She was also active in the Thomson community, the First Methodist Church, and the Girl Scouts. She was the first president, in 1939, of the Garden Study Club in Thomson.

Following the death of Mr. Knox, she married Denver W. Swanson of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., who had settled there following his retirement from St. Paul Insurance Companies. She and Mr. Swanson enjoyed many years of happiness prior to his death.

Mrs. Swanson is survived by her son; one stepdaughter, Sandra Swanson Hammer of Dedham, Massachusetts; seven grandchildren and three step grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 11, 2004, at 4 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 353 Main Street, Thomson, Ga., with burial in the Knox family plot, Westview Cemetery, Thomson.

Pallbearers were Boone A. Knox, W.L. (Larry) Knox, Robert E. Knox, Jr., Dr. John Charles Knox, Charles Edward Knox, Donald T. McNeill, Jr.

If so desired, the family suggests donations to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, Thomson, GA 30824

Platt's Funeral Home, Evans, and Curtis Funeral Home, Thomson, were in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Naomi Gravitt Banks
CAMAK, Ga. -- Mrs. Naomi Gravitt Banks, 84, of Camak, entered into rest January 23, 2005 at McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Thomson.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she had been a resident of the Camak area since 1936. She had been a resident of Thomson Manor, Thomson, Georgia since July 2004. Mrs. Banks was a member of Camak Baptist Church.

She is survived by two children, a son, Kenneth L. Banks and his wife, Marcia, of Camak, and a daughter, Sybil Banks Broussard and her husband, Ridley, of Kinder, Louisiana. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Kay Broussard Sonnier and Warren Mark Broussard of Westlake, Louisiana, Ken Banks of Camak, and Ricky Banks of Phenix City, Alabama; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leatus Banks.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, January 24, 2005 at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Chester Hall officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camak Baptist Church.

Mrs. Dorothy W. Barton
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Mrs. Dorothy W. Barton, 70, wife of the late Barney F. Barton, Sr., of River Ridge Drive, entered into rest Sunday, January 16, 2005 at University Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005 in the chapel of Rowland Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Hyder and Rev. Raymond Eargle officiating. Interment was at the First Baptist Church of Beech Island Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lawrence Allen Barnes, James Lester, John Golden, Billy Barton, Sam Barton and Barney Barton, Jr.

Mrs. Barton was a native of Lincoln County, and had lived in Augusta for the past 22 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Beech Island and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a son Edward Dale Barton.

Survivors include three sons, Barney F. Barton, Jr., of Beech Island, Sam Barton of Gulf Breeze, FL, and William Henry Barton, II of Augusta; three daughters, Ellen Golden of North Augusta, Grace Lenore Barnes of Thomson, and Gwendolyn Lester of Augusta; her mother, Eloise Willingham of Beech Island; a brother, Allen "Rock" Willingham of Jackson; nine grandchildren, John M. McPherson, Grace Marie Barnes, Christy Lee Lariscey, Patrick Barton, Page Barton, Lisa Barton, Lori Barton, Dorothy Michelle Barton and Amy Lester; 16 great-grandchildren.

Rowland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Yvonne Butler Bentley
LINCOLNTON, Ga. -- Mrs. Yvonne Butler Bentley, 69, wife of the late Ralph Bentley, died Thursday, January 20, at her residence.
Graveside services were held Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 4 p.m. at Lincolnton City cemetery with Revs. Elton Lawson and John Pike officiating.

Mrs. Bentley, the daughter of the late Boyce and Eloise Bohler Butler, was a lifelong resident of Lincoln County. She was the former owner and operator of the Milky Way Freeze Bar for 30 years, She was a member of Lincolnton United Methodist Church. Survivors include daughters, Brenda Goolsby, Lincolnton, Rosalyn Guillebeau, Lincolnton; son, Richard Bentley, Lincolnton; sister, Iris Luckey, Thomson and brother, Boyce Butler, Atlanta.

Ms. Brenda Lee Brown
THOMSON, Ga. -- Funeral services for Ms. Brenda Lee Brown, 43, of Mobley St., Thomson, were held on Monday, January 24, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Greater St. James A.M.E. Church, Rev. Gerald Caldwell, Pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Poplar Head Baptist Church Cemetery, Dearing.
Survivors are one son, Reckio V. Brown; a daughter, Shelitia S. Brown, both of Thomson; father, Mr. David Benning; 10 brothers, Eddie Brown, Patrick Brown, Stephenson Brown, all of Atlanta, Lucious Brown, Wayman Brown, Ricardo Brown, Ronald Brown, Hamilton Brown, Dean Brown and John D. Benning, all of Thomson; five sisters, Adell Brown, Hattie Hart, Sandra McCord, all of Thomson, Martha McCord, Atlanta, Gladys Stephens, LaGrange, Ga.; other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Samuel Leverett, Jr.
CLARKS HILL, S.C. -- The funeral for Mr. Samuel Leverett, Jr., 64, of Clarks Hill, S.C., was held on Sunday, January 23, 2005, at 3 p.m. at the Olive Grove Baptist Church, Appling, Dr. R. F. Leverett, Pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ella Lue Leverett, Clarks Hill; four daughters, Patricia Scott of Augusta, Maxine Green and Evett Leverett of Clarks Hill, Breanna Leverett of Evans; four sons, Bruce Green, Anthony Leverett, of Clarks Hill, Samuel Leverett III of Augusta, Crawford Tankersly of Appling; two sisters, Mattie Tate of Atlanta, Ga.; Maggie Stephens of Martinez; two brothers, Joseph Leverett of Dearing, Thomas Leverett of Augusta; one grandchild; other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Bessie C. McNeal

THOMSON, Ga. -- Mrs. Bessie C. McNeal, 89, widow of Mr. Joshua Frank McNeal, died Sunday, January 16, 2005, in the Warrenton Health and Rehab.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005 in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe McNeal officiating. Burial was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. McNeal was a native of Glascock County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include two daughters, Frankie McNeal Duskin, Fort Pierce, Fla. and Alice Baumgartner, Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Joe McNeal Sr., Commerce, Ga.; and 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lloyd "Bo" V. Whitaker, Jr.
Retired Air Force
HARLEM, Ga. -- Entered into rest Friday, January 21, 2005, Mr. Lloyd 'Bo' V. Whitaker, Jr., 80, husband of Ruby N. Roberts Whitaker, of Harlem.
Funeral services were held at 2 PM Monday January 24, 2005, at Silver Run Baptist Church, Harlem, Ga., with the Rev. Jerry Pitman officiating. Interment was in the Harlem Memorial cemetery with full military honors.

Mr. Whitaker, a native of McDuffie County, was an Air Force retiree, having served in WWII, Korea, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Viet Nam. He was a member of the Local Union #150 Plumber and Steam Fitters, the Henry Miller Masonic Lodge and the Shriners of Charleston. He was also a member of the Silver Run Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby N. Roberts Whitaker; one son, Lloyd V. Whitaker, III, of Augusta; three step-daughters, Vernell Ansley, Dearing, Nancy Wilson, Harlem, and Betty Eno, Dearing; two brothers, Harold Kenneth Whitaker, Dearing, and Carol S. Whitaker, Thomson; two grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; one great grandchild and six step-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were members of the military. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons.
