Mrs. Mary Knox McNeill
THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Mary Knox McNeill, 56, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Thomson, the daughter of Ruth Hall Knox and the late Robert E. Knox of Thomson. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Donald Thomas McNeill and by her children, Virginia Ruth McNeill of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Donald Thomas McNeill, Jr. of Atlanta. Mrs. McNeill also is survived by her brothers, Robert E. Knox, Jr. and Andrew Hall Knox of Thomson and her sister Ruth Austin Knox of Macon.
Mrs. McNeill was an active member of Thomson First United Methodist Church and its Friendship Sunday School Class, in which she taught for many years. She also was a member of the Susie Mayes Service Group of the Untied Methodist Women. A gifted gardener, she was involved with the Pine Needle Garden Club and the McDuffie Garden Council, having been President of both. She served her community on many capacities, including the McDuffie Regional Hospital Foundation, McDuffie County Heart Fund and McDuffie County Cancer Relay for Life. Mrs. McNeill attended Wesleyan College and graduated form the University of Georgia. She was a woman of deep faith, uncommon grace and warm beauty.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m. at Thomson First United Methodist Church, with Dr. George Freeman, Dr. Wilfred Bellamy and Rev. Brian Davis officiating. Interment was in Westview Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Langham, Tommy Neuhoff, Toby Silberman, George Lokey, John McNeill and Rusty Lovelace.

THOMSON, Ga.- Mr. Keith Munro Nelson, 48, of Wycliff Rd., Thomson, Ga. entered into rest Feb. 13, 2004. in Atlanta, Ga.
Survivors include: his wife, Cindy Newsome Nelson, Thomson, Ga.; sons, Kyle Munro Nelson, Orlando, Fla., Adam Tyler Nelson, Orlando, Fla.; daughter, Avery Simone Nelson, Orlando, Fla.; step son: Brandon Cason, Thomson, Ga.; mother, Marcelyn Steele Putnam, Macon, Ga.; sister, Melinda Nelson Motlagh, Savannah, Ga.; brother, Kirk Steele Nelson Decatur, Ga.
Mr. Nelson was a native of Chicago Heights, Ill. but lived most of his life in Tucker, Ga. He was a Office Manager for Kwitt-Gilbert Southern Road Construction Company. He also served in the US Navy as a Petty Officer 2nd Class.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 at Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Randy Dunaway and Rev. Reginald Blakewood officiating. Interment was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

MATTHEWS, Ga.- Mr. Jack Brown Oliphant, Sr., age 94, of Anderson-Oliphant Road, entered into rest Feb. 3, 2004 at McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Thomson.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 at Ways Baptist Church, Stellaville, Ga. at 11 a.m. with Rev. Wayne Turpin and Rev. Allen Holbrook officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Oliphant was a native of Jefferson County, a World War II Army veteran, and a member of Ways Baptist Church. He had retired as a meat cutter, farmer and was also the owner of Thomson Packing Company in Thomson.
Survivors include four sons, Jack B. Oliphant Jr., Thomson, Billy Oliphant, Grovetown, Tommy Oliphant, Warrenton, and David Oliphant, Thomson; two daughters Barbara Hefner and Dianne Norris, both of Thomson; one brother Harry Oliphant, Hephzibah, Ga.; one sister Dorothy Godwin, Plains , Ga.; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Joshua Hefner, Phillip Story, Zack Norris, Alan Oliphant, Brian Oliphant, and Mike Oliphant.

AUGUSTA, Ga.- Rev. Freddie Paschal, Jr., of Glenn Hills Circle entered into rest Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at the University Hospital.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Beulah Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Sam Davis officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive Memorial Garden.
He was a native of McDuffie County; a retired Civil Service Employee after 30 years of service and 12 years of service at Johnson Control and a member of Beulah Grove Baptist Church. He was pastor of the following churches: St. Paul Baptist Church, St. John Baptist Church and First Friendship Baptist Church in Hancock County, Ga., and a member of the Ministers Conference, the Southern Baptist Conference, the SCLC, NAACP, and the Pilgrimaires Gospel Group Quartet.
Survivors are his wife, Ola Paschal; one daughter, Kathy Marie Waltower, Augusta; seven sons, Larry Paschal, Brooklyn, N.Y., Freddie E. THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. James L. Thigpen, 84, of Mount Pleasant Road, Thomson, entered into rest Feb. 13, 2004, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Husband of the late Louise Hall Thigpen, Mr. Thigpen's survivors include son, David Thigpen, Thomson; stepdaughters, Mary Sanders-Lake, Eatonton, Janelle Dent, Thomson and Martha Jackson, Thomson; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Thigpen was a life-long resident of McDuffie County. He was retired as a truck driver for National Homes and a member of Mesena United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Beggs Funeral Home chapel. Interment was in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, Thomson, with Sue Meehan officiating.
Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons.

Mrs. Mamie Lee Cartledge Cummings
THOMSON, Ga.- Funeral services for Mrs. Mamie Lee Cartledge Cummings, 63, of Dallas Dr., Thomson, Ga., who died Feb. 4, 2004 were held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the First Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Winfield.
Rev. Roscoe Perry, Pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Cummings was a McDuffie County native and a member of the First Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Survivors are her husband, Mr. John Albert Cummings of Thomson; two sons, Bobby Charles Cummings and Willie James Cummings; a daughter, Carol Elaine Hobbs all of Augusta; one sister, Mae Frances Crawford of Thomson; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. James Otto May, 78, of 207 May Road entered into rest Feb. 9, 2004 at Doctor's Hospital.
He was the beloved husband of Georgia B. May and the late Shirley S. May. He was the son of the late Robert Truman May, Sr. and the late Emma Heath May.
Other survivors include his son, Ted May of Thomson, daughter, Bridget May Hill of Columbus, Ga.; five brothers, R. T. May, Jr. and Emille May both of Florida, Emory May of Falls Church, Va., Roy May and Leon May both of Thomson; three sisters, Virginia Nobles of Milledgeville, Miriam Usry of Gibson and Inez Rabun of Thomson; five grandchildren, Michelle Hill, Trey Hill, Keri May, Kori May and Katie May.
Mr. May lived most of his life in McDuffie County. He served in the U.S Army during the Korean Conflict, was retired from Civil Services, a member of the A. J. Miller Lodge #204, and a member of Salem United Methodist Church. He was also the first 18-year-old to vote in the United States on Aug. 21, 1943.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004 at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leo B. Carpenter officiating. Interment was in the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Honorary Pallbearers were members of the A. J. Miller Lodge #204. Pallbearers were James Freeman, Kenny May, J. D. Hardaway, Leon Cato, Gerald Bryant, and Emory Newsome.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Friendship Baptist Church, Mitchell, Ga. with the Rev. Jeff Pulliam officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Pulliam was a native of Glascock County and was a member of the Wrens First Baptist Church.
Survivors are her loving husband, Mr. Clifton Pulliam; two sons, Anthony 'Buddy' Pulliam of Otto, N.C., Mike Pulliam of Clarksville, Ga.; one daughter, Cheryl James of Tucson, Arizona two brothers, Ronnie Daniel of Atlanta, Don Daniel of Snellville and one sister, Monnie Hicks of Dearing, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. DEARING, Ga.- Mr. Jack Thornton, 76, widower of Mrs. Joyce Thornton, of Mattie Harrison Road, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, in the Eisenhower Army Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the Curtis Funeral Home chapel with the Revs. Kenny Walker and Todd Upchurch officiating. Burial was in Fort Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Thornton was a native of Carroll County and was born in Carrollton, Ga., where he entered the Army in 1945. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
Survivors include two sons, one daughter, two stepsons, one stepdaughter and 15 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Barry Hawkins, Steven Hawkins, and his grandsons, Bob Clark, Brett Clark, Michael Pardue and Ben McPherson.
Donations may be made to the Dearing Baptist Building fund.
