Nettie Lee, 87, of New England died Feb. 23. She was in Dade County to the late George and Nola Castleberry Coates. Lee was a member of New England Baptist Church. Lee was preceded in death by husband Harold Lee, son George Lee, brother Hugh Coates, and sister Dorothy Cloud. Survivors include son Charles Lee of Wildwood, daughter Shirley Lee Dickerson of Chattanooga and sister Elizabeth Lanier of Garfield; grandchildren Cathy Lewis, Mike Lee, Tracy Linder, and Kelly Dickerson; great-grandchildren Molly and Macy Linder. Funeral services were held Feb. 25 in the Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Ralph McMahan officiating. Interment was in Payne's Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ryan Funeral Home in Trenton.
HAZEL VIRGINIA PHILLIPS
Hazel Phillips, 76, of Cloudland died Feb. 26. Phillips was preceded in death by husband Albert Phillips, parents Wilburn and Lottie Henderson Ray, and sisters Estelle Teague and Bessie Pearcy. Survivors include daughters Linda Hall of Cloudland and Glenda Sue Hall of Ringgold; sister Sue Shirley of Ider, Ala.; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 28 in Kerby Chapel with the Rev. Marlin Williams officiating. Interment was in New Home cemetery in Henagar, Ala. BETTY KATE SMITH
Betty Kate Smith, 90, of Bryant, Ala., died Feb. 23. She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Bryant, Ala. She was preceded in death by husband Lack Smith and sisters Verna Hartline, Ruby Graham, Bessie Porter and Myrtle Blevins. Survivors include daughter Louise Cantrell, Bryant, Ala.; son Huey Smith, Chattanooga; sister Clara Mae Potter, Chattanooga; brothers James "Buddy" Laney, William Laney, both of Chattanooga, Bobby Laney, Bryant, Ala.; grandchildren Pamela Rushton, Greg Smith; great-grandchildren Katyln and Lindsey Rushton; several nieces and nephews. KATHRYN JUNITA SMITH
Kathryn Smith, 72, of Henagar, Ala., died Feb. 23 in Huntsville, Ala. She was a member of the Concord Baptist Church. Smith was preceded in death by parents Elbert L. and Izell Kilgore Woods. Survivors include husband Hobert Smith of Henagar; son Bruce Smith of Henagar; daughter Joyce Smith of Henagar; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 25 in Kerby Chapel. Interment in Henagar Memorial Park with Elder Winston Jenkins officiating. Arrangements were made by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.
ROY FRANKLIN SPROUSE
Roy Sprouse, 64, of Chattanooga died Feb. 24. Sprouse was born in Chattanooga and retired with 22 years of service in the U.S. Army. During his time in the military, Sprouse was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He served in the third, fifth and sixth special forces groups and was also a member of Project Delta with the fifth Special Forces Group. He was a master paratrooper and served three different tours in the Vietnam War and was highly decorated. He was a lifelong member of the Special Forces Association. Sprouse was preceded in death by sisters Doris Shaw and Edna Joyce Sprouse. Survivors include wife Ginnie Sprouse; sons Boyd Sprouse of Pinebluff, N.C., and Ira Sprouse of Lewis Center, OH.; sister Brenda Giddens of Lookout Mountain; brothers Jimmy Boyd of Chattanooga and Richard Boyd of Rossville; five grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Feb. 28 in South Crest Chapel. Interment was in National Cemetery. Arrangements were by Lane Funeral Home and Crematory in Rossville.
WAYNE TEMPLETON Wayne Tempelton, 68, of New Salem died Feb. 26. He was a retired textile worker and served in the National Guard. He enjoyed bowling and was a member of the "Rambling Rack" and "Geyer's Angels" teams at Fort Lanes. He was preceded in death by parents Charlie and Myrtle Ledford Templeton; brothers V.L. (Nook) Templeton, Doyle Templeton and special friend Leland Martin. Survivors include wife Ann Holder Templeton; daughter D'Andrea Joy Caliham; sons Michael Templeton, Lee Templeton, and Charles Wayne Templeton Jr.; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held March 1 in Moore Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Harold Howell officiating. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.
EDWARD VANBUREN
Edward Vanburen of Trenton died Feb. 27. Vanburen was a self-employed sheet metal worker and had served in the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include daughters Renee Ariss of Trenton, Bonnie Neely of Tacoma, Wash., and Andrea Vanburen of Augusta; and eight grandchildren. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.
HENRY CLYDE WALKER
Henry Walker, 61, of Chattanooga died Feb. 22 at Erlanger Medical Center. Walker was formerly of Rosalie, Ala. Walker was preceded in death by father Robert L. Walker. Survivors include mother Alma Walker Roberts of Rainsville; sons Robert L. Renee Walker of Chattanooga and John Ross Webb Jr. of Dayton, Tenn., daughters Teresa Lynn Loyd of Chattanooga; brothers Levoy Walker of Dutton and Delbert Walker of Henagar; and sister Robbie Haymon of Rainsville. Funeral services were held Feb. 24 in Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Watson William and the Rev. Dan Kirkpatrick officiating. Interment will be in New Hope cemetery at Pisgah. Mr. Dewey Frank Johnson
ELBERTON, Ga.- Mr. Dewey Frank Johnson, 83, of Elberton, husband of Alice Peppers Johnson, died Thursday, June 17, 2004.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 20, at Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Phillip Hart officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Born in Elbert County he was a son of the late Paul Johnson and Lillie Saxon Johnson.
He was a member of Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church, a member of Gideons International, member of the Farm Bureau Board, a member of the Elbert County Fire Board, a Deacon of the Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church, and the church treasurer, a former Boy Scout Master, a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II where he retired as a major, one of the founding members of Nancy Hart Nursing Home, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 35 years.
Survivors include his wife of the home, Alice Peppers Johnson, one daughter, Linda J. Burden of Athens; two sons, Franky W. Johnson and David M. Johnson, both of Elberton; one sister, Ruby Carder of Thomson; one brother, Oscar Johnson of Elberton; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Landon Johnson, Lance Johnson, Shannon Johnson, Alan Holcomb, Jeff DeWitt, Ben Emery, Andy Dixon and Ric Dixon. Honorary pallbearers were Audie Cook and Millard Cook.

Mr. Johnson Walter 'Jay' McGahee

AUGUSTA, Ga.- Mr. John Walter 'Jay' McGahee, 81, of Walton Way, Augusta, entered into rest June 17, 2004, at his residence.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Scruggs Cemetery, Norwood.
He is survived by Frances V. Griffith of Norwood, Betty Joyce Dye of Gray, Ga., Doris Gardner of North Augusta, S.C., Beth Bays of Atlanta; brothers, Henry Clayton McGahee of Charlotte, N.C. and Richard Marion McGahee of Warrenton; stepmother, Lola Street McGahee of North Augusta.
Mr. McGahee was a native of McDuffie County, but had lived in Augusta, for over 30 years. He was a chief clerk in the U.S. Army during World War II, worked with Pillsbury in Atlanta, and operated Antiques and Furnishings in Augusta.

Mrs. Amy Lou Culbreth Rogers

HARTWELL, Ga.- Amy Lou Culbreth Rogers, widow of Sgt. Rogers (Ret), died Tuesday June 8, 2004 at the Hart Care Center in Hartwell, GA.
Mrs. Rogers was born in Dearing, Ga. on June 12, 1914 and died four days shy of her 90th birthday. She was a resident of Augusta and Richmond County throughout her long and productive life, working as a telephone operator for Southern Bell, a wife, mother and parent, a nurse's aide, a Sunday School teacher and hospital volunteer.
Mrs. Rogers is survived by a son, Dr. Clayton Rogers and his wife Betty, who live in Virginia; a daughter, Judith Rogers Wright and her husband Wendell who live in Anderson, S.C.; three grandsons, Allen Wright and his wife Tammy of West Pelzer, S.C., and their children Noah and Gabrielle, Paul Wright of Spartanburg, S.C. and Jared Wright of Alpharetta, Ga.; a special nephew, John Gay and his wife Lillie of Augusta; one great-grandson and one great-great-grand son.
She was the last of the children born to Walter and Molly Culbreth of McDuffie County. Throughout her life she is remembered for her warm and happy disposition and her cheerful and inclusive greetings to those around her. She strived to be a Child of God and tried to be a peacemaker among friends and family. She took pride in the success of her children and other life achievements. Her essay on the Paris Peace Pact, which was written in 1932 while a student at Thomson High School, was recognized as the best in the State of Georgia.
A memorial celebration of her life was held on Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Bayvale Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. James F. Bland officiating.
The body has been cremated and the remains interred at Hillcrest Memorial Park next to her husband. Amy and the family requested any memorial contributions, in her memory, be made to Bayvale Baptist Church or to the Arthritis Foundation.

Mr. Oliver Pilcher Walden, Jr.
GIBSON, Ga.- Mr. Oliver Pilcher Walden, Jr., 71, of 3261 Highway 102 E., Gibson, entered into rest June 17, 2004 at University Hospital. He was the son of the late Oliver P. Walden, Sr. and the late Mary Will Walden.
Graveside services were held Monday, June 21, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Gardens in Louisville, with Rev. Thomas Ghann officiating.
Mr. Walden is survived by two daughters, Angela (Bill) Kemp of Gibson, Gail (Eugene) Norris of Warrenton; a brother, Melton Walden of Augusta; two sisters, Brenda Hobbs of Cottageville, S.C., Audrey Norton of Gibson; a special dedicated nephew, Milton and Debbie Hobbs of Thomson; two grandsons; three granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were employees of the Wal-Mart.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

WASHINGTON, Ga.- Mrs. Jean Waller Cartledge, 69, beloved wife of Mr. Jack Cartledge of Lincolnton Road, died Friday, June 11, 2004, in the University Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 13, 2004, in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Mike Stuphin officiating.
Mrs. Cartledge was a native of McDuffie County, but had lived in Washington for many years. She was a retired office clerk and a member of Thomson First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Cartledge, Washington; her daughter, Jan C. McCarty, Washington; her son, Jeffery L. Cartledge, Thomson; two sisters, Rachel Truitt, Washington, and Grace W. Hyatt, Norfolf, Va.; her brother, Bruce Waller, Harlem and two granddaughters, Jennifer McCarty and Jaime Cartledge.

THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Annette Guy, 77, of Thomson, widow of Mr. B.F. Guy Jr., died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in Thomson Manor Nursing Facility.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 10, 2004, in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Dr. Jim Ramsey and Rev. Butch Baston officiating.
Mrs. Guy was a native of Jefferson County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Larry (Henrietta) Guy and Ray (Beverly) Guy, both of Thomson and Al (Kay) Guy, Fayetteville, Ga.; two sisters, Sara (T.W.) Bentley, Wrens and Barbara (Glenn) Gunby, Dunnellon, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
