Luther M. (Buddy) Adkins

Luther M. (Buddy) Adkins of Cleveland died Friday, May 23, 2003, at a private health care center following an extended illness. He was 90.

Mr. Adkins was born in Cedar Keys, Fla., the son of the late Luther Lee and Lena Ann Herring Adkins. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation, a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, American Legion for 56 years and the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Adkins was a past member of the Cleveland Kiwanis Club, where he was very active until his illness, and he was a member of Loudsville United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen McKinney Adkins; brothers, Phil Adkins, Cliff Adkins; sisters, Edna A. Nalley and Inez Howard.

Survivors include his sister, Nola Mae Wofford, Gainesville; brothers, Richard Adkins, Harlan Adkins, both of Gainesville; sister-in-laws, Frankie Turner, Cleveland, Lugene Garrett, Hiawassee; several special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday in the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Harold Ledford officiated. Burial was in Alta Vista Cemetery.

Bill Burnette

William (Bill) Burnette of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Cleveland died Monday, May 26, 2003, at his residence in Florida following an extended illness. He was 67.

He was born in Wilcox County on Aug. 30, 1935, to George Edward and Ethel Cantrell Burnette.

Mr. Burnette was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he held state and local offices in the Postal Clerks Union. He was a representative of the United Family Life Insurance Co. and was preceded in death by his brothers, James Burnette, Ferrell Burnette, Lonnie Burnette, John Burnette and Hubert Burnette, and sisters, Bessie Wright and Edna Cook.

Survivors include his wife, Janice McGhee Burnette; daughter, Lori D. Burnette; sons and daughter-in-law, Mark T. Burnette and Bart A. and Sharon R. Burnette; brother, W.E. Burnette; sisters, Geneva Nutt, Lillian Wright and Mae Simmons.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pitts United Methodist Church in Pitts. The Rev. Ray Burnette, the Rev. Ronnie Burnette and the Rev. Ronnie Youngblood. Burial will follow in Pitts Cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Thursday where the family will receive friends.

Bill Burnette

Ruby Lee Canup

Ruby Lee Canup of Helen died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness. She was 85.

Mrs. Canup was born in White County, the daughter of the late Virgil and Missouri Adams Hunter. She was a homemaker and member of Nacoochee United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Coleman Canup, Helen; daughter, Janey Postell, Norcross; son, Morris Canup, Helen; sister, Mary Jarrard, Cleveland; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday in the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Wilson and the Rev. Doyal Thornton officiated. Burial was in Nacoochee United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Alma Clawson

HARMONY, Pa. – Alma B. Clawson died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Evergreen Nursing Center Harmony. She was 98.

Mrs. Clawson was born Oct. 23, 1902, in Phillipsburg, Pa., to the late Frank and Mattie Neighley Bowman. She had been a longtime resident of that area.

She was a member of Springdale United Presbyterian Church and was a 1923 graduate of Tarentum High School.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theodore Ewing Clawson Sr.; sisters, Irene Le Grande and Mildred Steele; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

Survivors include her daughters, Corinne Anderson, Mc-Connellsburg, Pa., Elma Louise Barnhart, Cleveland; son, Theodore Clawson Jr., Campus City, Mo.; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Hall, Springdale, Pa., and Eva Guthrie, Everett, Wash.

Services are planned at 11 a.m. Friday at the Charles B. Jarvie Funeral Home in Springdale. Friends may visit from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Dorseyville, Pa. Memorial donations may be made to the Springdale United Presbyterian Church or to a local Alzheimer's Foundation.

Henry Ford Howard

GAINESVILLE – The Rev. Henry Ford Howard died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Bell Minor Nursing Home following an extended illness. He was 86.

Rev. Howard was born in Forsyth County on March 8, 1917, to the late John Henry and Belle Villyard Howard. He was retired from Northeast Georgia Medical Center after 28 years of service. He was ordained as a minister in 1952 at Community Baptist Church. He pastored several churches in Hall, Dawson and White counties from 1951 until 1987.

He was a member of Airline Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Ophnes Grogan Howard; daughter, R.V. Beatty; grandson, Rodney Beatty; granddaughter, Becky Beatty.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Clinton and Gracelyn Howard, Gainesville; Steve and Angela Howard, Dawsonville, Wayne and Patti Howard, Gainesville; brother and sister-in-law, J.W. and Bobbie Howard, Cumming; grandchildren, Amy and Jeff Cooper, Heather and Steven Howard, Ryan and Holli Howard, Karen Beatty, Gainesville, Dexter Hubbard, Dawsonville, Vickie Montreuil, Cleveland; great-grandchildren, including Becky Marie Montreuil, Cleveland; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel in Gainesville. The Rev. Charles Pirkle, the Rev. Bradley Elliott, the Rev. Roger Tankersley and the Rev. Clyde Coleman will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Area minister friends should assemble at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home to serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Airline Baptist Church Building Fund, 3368 White Sulphur Road, Gainesville.

Herb Rommerdale

LONGWOOD, Fla. – Herbert John (Herb) Rommerdale died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at his home. He was 91.

He was well known in Cleveland where he lived for many years from the 1950s-1970s while working in quality control management for Talon Inc. In the late '70s, Mr. Rommerdale accepted a position in upper management at the Meadville, Pa., home office of Talon Inc. After more than 35 years of service, he retired from Talon in Meadville and made plans with his wife, Virginia, to return to Cleveland. They lived here until 1998.

Mr. Rommerdale was a life member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed collecting and shooting rifles as well as hand loadi2ng. He also enjoyed reading.

He ventured in the Peace River area of Alberta, Canada, during the Depression and lived off the land hunting and trapping in Canada during this time period. He continued to be an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and target shooting.

Survivors include his son, John Rommerdale; daughters-in-law, Ruth Rommerdale, Long-wood, Fla., and Ellie Rommerdale, Brandon, Miss., grandchildren Tina Rommerdale, Madison, Miss., Chad Rommerdale, Brandon, Miss., Rachel Rommerdale Greseth, St. Mary’s; and great-grandchildren, Britany Elizabeth Wilkins, Brody Evan Wilkins and Bailey Greseth.

Marjory Pritchett Bearden

Marjory Pritchett Bearden of Sautee-Nacoochee died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness. She was 92.

Mrs. Bearden was born in Atlanta and spent most of her adult life in Buford before moving to White County in 1996. She was a mother and homemaker as well as owner of Pritchett’s Grocery and Pritchett’s Restaurant, which she operated for a number of years.

Mrs. Bearden was also an active member of the Gwinnett Garden Club. She was a well-known speaker to various garden clubs in the area. She was past president of Georgia Women’s Club. She also founded the Abundant Life Fellowship Program at the First Baptist Church of Buford. She was a member of Nacoochee United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, James A. Pritchett Sr., Avondale Estates; daughters, Janet Vandegriff, Sautee-Nacoochee, Barbara Huff, Ellijay; grandchildren, James A. Pritchett, Richmond, Va., Debra Shaw, Gainesville, Susan Hofer, Sautee-Nacoochee, J. Michael Vandegriff, Sautee-Nacoochee, Michael Huff, Alexandria, and Laura Grant, Ellijay; sisters, Mildred Hartley, Jonesboro, and Nell Hughley, McDonough; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Sunday at Nacoochee United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lyndon Eubanks officiated.

Thomas Adron Chambers

Thomas Adron Chambers, Cleveland, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following a brief illness. He was 68.

Mr. Chambers was born in Jackson County to the late Thomas Roscoe and Julia Ann Campbell Chambers. He was a member of the Heaven’s Horsemen and attended Cleveland Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Chambers, Cleveland; daughters, Anita Doyal, Jasper, Tina Chambers, Cumming, Linda Yarbrough, King’s Mountain, N.C.; sisters, Gladys Rucker, Austine Moore, both of King’s Mountain; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Barrett Chapel. The Rev. Scott Napier officiated. Burial was in Yonah View Memorial Gardens.

Wayne Corbin

SPRING HILL, Fla. – Wayne Corbin died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Oak Hill Hospital in Spring Hill following a brief illness. He was 72.

Mr. Corbin was a native of White County and spent most of his adult life in Florida. He was a self-employed welder and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his son, Michael Corbin, Cleveland; daughter, Angie Ransom, Gainesville; brother, Tommy Corbin, Atlanta; sisters, Bennie Ruth Corbin, Dahlonega, and Doris Folger, Atlanta.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Chris Shelnut officiated. Burial was in Gateway Memory Park.

Amanda Grace Hudson

GAINESVILLE – Amanda Grace Hudson died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. She was 86.

A lifelong resident of Hall County, Mrs. Hudson was the daughter of the late Mac and Mamie McDonald Gowder. She worked for Zeeman’s Manufacturing for 14-1/2 years, Hall County Library for 2-1/2 years and was a poll officer for Hall County for many years.

Mrs. Hudson was a member of New Bridge Baptist Church, where she helped with Vacation Bible School, played the piano and sang in the choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harrison Hudson.

Survivors include her children, Mildred and Nelson LeCroy, Blairsville, Betty Rozell, Birmingham, Ala., Herman and Dawne Hudson, Brunswick, Jacki and George Siques, Cleveland; grandchildren, Daryll LeCroy, Atlanta, Syd Almeida, Blairsville, Marty Rozell, Birmingham, Ala., Nikki Garrison, Cleveland; great-granddaughter, Olivia Almeida, Blairsville; sisters, Carol Dean Smith and Eulene Thurmond, both of Gainesville; brother, Frederick Gowder, Gainesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday at New Bridge Baptist Church in Gainesville. The Rev. Loyd Martin officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Joyce Gibson Chambers Janofsky

Joyce Gibson Chambers Janofsky of Cleveland died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness. She was 69.

Mrs. Janofsky was born in Bryson City, N.C., the daughter of the late Ralph and Tommie Gibson.

She was a former co-owner of Janwyck Paint in Cleveland.

Survivors include her husband, Len Janofsky; daughter, Joy C. Fowler, Gainesville; sons, Matthew Janofsky, Lawrence-ville, Gerald Janofsky, Scituate, Mass., Paul Janofsky, Alpharetta; and four grandchildren.

There will be a gathering for celebrating her life for friends and family. A time and place will be announced at a later date.
