Thelma Mae Grizzle
Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Little-Davenport Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Thelma Mae Grizzle, 65 of Murrayville. The Rev. Donald Tritt and Rev. Dean Bryant officiated. Interment followed in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Grizzle died Monday, May 28, 2001 at the Lanier Park Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Blairsville, Mrs. Grizzle had lived in Hall County for the past 50 years. She was a homemaker and attended the Liberty Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Arrie Sosebee Phillips of Blairsville; sisters, Maudie Rider of Blairsville and Bertie Mae Rider of Dahlonega; brother, Randall Sosebee of Blairsville and a grandson; Thomas Yearwood of Demorest.
Survivors include her husband, J. L. Grizzle of Murrayville; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Shirley Grizzle of Clermont; Tommy and Gail Grizzle of Woodstock; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Talmadge Free of Lula; Linda and Travis Hollis of Cleveland; Brenda and David Yearwood of Demorest; Carolyn and Stanley Wilson of Lula; brother, Carlos Phillips of Andrews, N.C.; sisters, Shirley Grindle of Cleveland, Kathleen Seabolt of Blairsville; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Howard Mosher
Mr. Howard Lloyd Mosher, age 49 of Cleveland died Thursday, June 21, 2001 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness.
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001 from Alexander’s Gateway Chapel, the Rev. Jimmy Sargent officiated.
Mr. Mosher lived in Bradenton, Fla. before moving to White County in 1992. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marie Smith Mosher. Mr. Mosher was an independent owner operator and was a member of the Owner/Operator Independent Drivers Association.
He is survived by his wife, Kathe Mosher of Cleveland; daughter, Melissa Mosher of Cleveland; son, Jeremy Mosher of Cleveland; step-mother, Jan Mosher of Parrish, Fla.; brothers, Robert Mosher of Bradenton and J.D. Mosher of Miami, Fla.; sisters, Cathy Chouinard of Wasco, Ill.; Cindy Upcavage of Plant City, Fla.; and Robin Mosher of Pheonix, Ariz; and a number of nieces and nephews.

William Odis Nelms
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001 for Mr. William Odis Nelms, 66 of Cleveland.
The Rev. Loyd Martin, Rev. Lester Haynes, and Rev. Teddy Allen officiated. Interment followed in the Macedonia Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Nelms died Sunday, June 24, 2001 at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Nelms was born in White County the son of the late Frank and Essie Ferguson Nelms. He had lived in White County, all of his life and was retired from Habersham Mills. Mr. Nelms was preceded in death by brothers, Curtis Nelms and Mack Nelms. He attended Macedonia Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Claudene Nelms of Cleveland; sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Cemeal Nelms, Brian and Buffy Nelms, all of Cleveland; Larry and Janice Littleton of Toccoa; sisters, Dorothy Nelms, Ruth McCallister, both of Cleveland; Virginia Loudermilk of Mt. Airy; brother, Junior Nelms of Cleveland; and nine grandchildren.

Charles Canup Sr.
Mr. Charles Arthur Canup Sr., age 75 of Cleveland, died Thursday, June 21, 2001 at his residence following a sudden illness. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001 from the chapel of Alexander’s Gateway Chapel Funeral home, the Rev. Mark Akin officiated. Interment followed in the Gateway Memory Park Cemetery.
Mr. Canup was born and raised in Kellum Valley and left White County to join the United States Army, where he attained the rank of First Sergeant and served during World War II.
After the war Mr. Canup settled in Ft. Mitchell, Ala. where he was employed at the Alabama Craft Paper Company, later to become Mead Paper, where he retired after 36 years service.
He was a member of the North Georgia Bible Church. Mr. Canup was preceded in death by his parents, Smith Monroe Canup and Aurora Allison Canup.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtis Freeman Canup of Cleveland; son, Charles Arthur Canup Jr. of Cleveland; daughters, Sandra Fleming of Cleveland, Teresa Kuntz of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; brothers, Lewis Canup of Clarkesville, Bobby Canup of Clarkesville, Lamar Canup of Sautee; daughters, Marginelle Brown of Cleveland and Jean Grizzle of Cleveland, and Kathleen Taylor of Chaffin, Southern Calif.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the North Georgia Bible Church Building Fund.

Viola Turner Reynolds
Mrs. Viola Turner Reynolds, 86, of Cleveland died Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Lanier Park Campus following a period of declining health.
Mrs. Reynolds was born in White County, the daughter of the late Jim J. C. Turner and Pearl Etris Turner. She was a member of County Line Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Ham Reynolds, Jr.
Survivors include brothers, Joseph Turner of Gainesville, Jearl D. Turner of Cherokee, N.C. and James M. Turner of Doraville; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2001 at Barrett Chapel. The Rev. Donald Tritt and Rev. Jimmy Palmer officiated. Burial followed in County Line Baptist Church Cemetery.

Kenneth Ray Dockery
Mr. Kenneth Ray Dockery, age 41, of Cleveland, Ga. died Saturday Evening in Asheville, N.C. following an auto accident. He was born in Union County December 6, 1959, the son of the late Lester and Othenda Dye Dockery. He was the night manager of Betty's Country Store in Helen and also worked at Freudenberg-NOK in Cleveland.
Survivors include brothers and sisters Buell Dockery, Troy Dockery, Cecil Dockery and Sherry Dockery, all of Blairsville; Wanda Webb of Copper Hill; Tommy Dockery of Young Harris; Ralph Dockery of Morganton and Marty Dockery of Apex, N.C.
Funeral services were Tuesday, 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, Ga. with Rev. Mark Porado and Rev. Tony Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow if the Pine Log cemetery.

Carlton “Junior” Lovell, Jr.
Mr. Carlton “Junior” Lovell, Jr., age 63 of Clarkesville died Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at his residence following an extended illness.
Born on November 18, 1937 in Habersham County, he was the son of the late Carlton & Nancy Benfield Lovell, Sr. He was a retired electrician,, and a member of Stonepile Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 19, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Stonepile Baptist Church in Clarkesville with the Rev. John Humphries and Rev. Paris Whitworth officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Jeane Church Lovell; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Dwayne Shelnut of Cleveland; daughter, Nicole Lovell of Clarkesville; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Carol Lovell of Dahlonega; son, Bobby Lovell of Clarkesville; sisters, Lou Bell Lovell of Toccoa and Effie Wilbanks of Mt. Airy; brothers, Ted Lovell and Robert Lovell, both of Hollywood; 4 grandchildren, Dustin and Amy Lovell of Dahlonega, as well as Amber and Lance Shelnut of Cleveland.
Worth William Arowood
Worth William Arowood, age 84 of Cleveland died Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at St. Joseph’s Mission in Asheville, N. C. following an extended illness.
Born in Towns County on October 29, 1916, he was the son of the late Jimmy and Letha Keyson Arowood. He was retired from Hogan Lumber Company. He was in the U. S. Army having served in WWII and was a member of Blue Creek Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Eller and son, Bud Arowood.
Survivors include daughters, Iva Lee Pilgrim of Gillsville, Betty Lou Croy of Cornelia, Lula Bell Watson of Dalton, Gracie Mae Powell of Cumming, Linda Tomlin of Cleveland; sons, Bobby Arowood of Lula, Leon Arowood of Dahlonega, Charles Arowood of Cleveland, Harvey Arowood of Toccoa; brother, Dewey Arowood of Cleveland; 29 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2001 in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin and Stewart Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Pilcher and Rev. Leon Arowood officiating. Burial followed in the Blue Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

Irene G. Carswell
Mrs. Irene G. Carswell, age 81 of Dalton, died Monday evening, October 15, 2001, at the Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Mrs. Carswell was born August 1, 1920 in Floyd County, daughter of the late Claude and Lottie (Williams) Gilbert. Mrs. Carswell was also preceded in death by her husband. Frank Lee Carswell, Sr., and grandson, Charles Bryant, Jr. and Andrew Mansfield.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Mary Carswell, Jr. of Kingsport, Tenn.; daughters and sons-in-law, Joann and Wayne Bryant of Sautee, Mary and Alvin Curtis, Alyce and David Mansfield, all of Dalton; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Ray of Dalton; several nieces and nephews.

Clara J. Brick
Private graveside services were held at Fort Snelling National cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota for Clara J. Brick, age 92, of St. Benedict Village, 2000 N. 15th Avenue S.E. Apt. #101 of St. Cloud, MN, 56304 who died on Friday, October 12, 2001, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minn. Clara was born on July 13, 1909, at Long Prairie, Minn., the daughter of Stephen and Mary (Rosch) Hansmeyer.
She was a 1930 graduate of the St. Cloud School of Nursing. Clara married
Cyril E. Brick on February 25, 1936, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie, Minn. Together they built and operated Brickie’s Woodland Lodge and Cabin Camp until 1943 when they enlisted in the military.
Clara served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II and was stationed in Cheltenham, England. She lived most of her life in St. Cloud, Minnesota except for twenty years she spent in Helen and Cleveland. Mrs. Brick is survived by two nieces, Irene Wahl and Rosemarie McDonald; and one nephew, Bill Kinsland, Cleveland. In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband on June 10, 1971 and two sisters, Catherine Sticka, and Marie Kinsland.
Dorothy Jean Neal Payne
Dorothy Jean Neal Payne, 77, of Cleveland died Monday, August 5 at her residence following an extended illness.
Dorothy Jean was born July 19, 1925, the daughter of Dr. L. G. Neal, Sr. and Pauline Butt Neal. She lived most of her life in Cleveland. She graduated from Cleveland High School in 1942 and from Young Harris College in 1944. She attended the University of Georgia in 1944-45 and entered the Piedmont Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta in 1945 from which she was graduated in May 1948. From 1948 to 1953 she worked for her father in the Neal Clinic in Cleveland.
In December 1952 Dorothy Jean was married
to Earl Ray Payne, Professor of English at Truett-McConnell College. She and her husband moved to Nashville where they both enrolled in George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Dorothy Jean was graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing in 1955.
For the last twenty-five years of her 41-year nursing career, Dorothy Jean was the Head Public Health Nurse for the White County Public Health Department, where she retired in 1988. She provided a lifetime of service to her community beyond the medical profession, assisting others behind the scene and without fanfare.
She was a member of the Eastern Star and a member of the Zion Interdenominational Church in Cleveland.
In 1978 Dorothy Jean shared and fostered the vision of five young people for what was to become one of the most remarkable ventures known worldwide. She became patron, nurse, chauffeur and advocate for BabyLand General Hospital and the Cabbage Patch Kids, which grew out of her father’s hospital clinic where her nursing career began. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Survivors include son, Thomas Geoffrey Payne of Clarkesville; granddaughter, Jillian Darlene Payne of Cleveland; brother, L. G. Neal Jr. of Milian. Dorothy Jean also leaves extended family and devoted friends.
In lieu of flowers, and in respect of her fondness for animals, memorial contributions may be made to the Charles Smithgall Humane Society of White County.

James Benton West
Funeral arrangements are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, August 8, 2002 at Cleveland First Baptist Church for Mr. James Benton West, 61, of Sautee.
Dr. Joe Vernon, Dr. Bob Massey and The Rev. Dennis Turner will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Nacoochee Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. West died Monday, August 5, 2002 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. West was born in White County and was an airline pilot. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Mr. West is preceded in death by his father, O.B. West Jr. He was the President of the White County Farm Bureau and a member and deacon of Cleveland First Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife, Sonja West of Sautee; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Chris Sosebee, and Deborah and John Alderman, all of Sautee; son, Jim West of Sautee; mother, Merle C. West of Sautee; brothers, Edwin L. West of Dillard and Dr. John D. West of Grayson; 9 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Fannie Ravan Johnson
Fannie Ravan Johnson, age 102 of Haines City, Fla., formerly of East Point, died July 18 at Haines City Health Care.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Lumpkin County near Turner’s Corner and spent most of her life in Cleveland, moving to East Point in 1962. She married
Robert S. Johnson in 1918. She was an active member of the East Point First United Methodist Church and the Missionary Society at Cleveland United Methodist Church where she knitted scarves and socks for soldiers in WWI and WWII.
She is survived by one son, Hiram Neal Johnson Sr. and daughter-in-law, Ann of Haines City; grandson, Rev. H. Neal Johnson Jr. and granddaughter-in-law, Patricia Johnson of Glade Springs, Va.; granddaughter, Lisa Kirk and grandson-in-law, Leonard David Kirk of Lutz, Fla.; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 22 at East Point First United Methodist. Rev. Herschel Sheets, Rev. H. Neal Johnson, Rev. Horace Couch officiated. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
