Ernest Conner
Lt. Col. Ernest B. Conner, Jr., AUS retired, of Gainesville, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 following an extended illness.
Col. Conner will be memorialized with full military honors on Friday, Feb. 2 in an open service at Crescent Hill Church in Nacoochee Valley. The Rev. James Weathersby of United Hospice, Atlanta, and Rev. Melissa Hartley, assistant rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Gainesville, will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will recieve friends at the church frm 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Friday, and will welcome guests following the service at The Comfort Inn in Helen.
Col. Conner was born in DeKalb County on November 6, 1917, and resided in Dawson and Lumpkin counties as a child and young adult. He was valedictorian of his high school class in Lumpkin County in 1936, and was a graduate of North Georgia College, Dahlonega, in 1938, receiving his U.S. Army commission as a second lieutenant.
As a young lieutenant, Col. Conner served in World War II from 1942 to 1946, returning home as a captain and the recipient of the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He returned to active duty again in 1952, serving in Korea, and was assigned to the Panmunjom peace talks, receiving the United Nations Honor Medal for his service.
He remained a citizen soldier in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring after 30 years of service.
During his civilian career in Gainesville, Conner was appointed as one of the first probation officers for the State of Georgia in 1956 and served as chief of the Northeastern Judicial Circuit before retirement. He was a lifelong deacon and Sunday school teacher at Central Baptist Church, and frequently attended Crescent Hill Church after retirement as he and his wife enjoyed a mountain cottage near Nacoochee Valley for more than 20 years.
Mr. Conner was a son of the late Ernest B. Conner, Sr. and Cynda Chapman Conner of Dahlonega. He was preceded in death by brothers, Glenson E. Conner and Charles E. Conner, both of Dahlonega; and sisters, Lena V. Conner, Washington, D.C., and Frances Jones Conner, Dahlonega.
He is survived by his brother, Robert E. Conner, Dahlonega; and sisters, Eva C. Conner and Grace Conner, both of Alexandria, Va. Within his immediate family, he is survived by his wife, Bonnie Lou Minish Conner, Gainesville; daughters, Mimi C. Allen, Oakwood, and Marsha Lou Conner, Winston-Salen, N.C. and Gainesville; and granddaughter, Heather M. Allen, Oakwood.
In lieu of flowers, Col. Conner requested that memorial contributions be made to Central Baptist Church, Gainesville; Grace Episcopal Church, Gainesville; Crescent Hill Church, Nacoochee Valley; or United Hospice, Gainesville.

Lavern Crumley
Mr. Lavern Crumley, 77 , of Dunwoody died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001.
He served as a Tech Sergeant in the Army Corps during the World War II European Campaign. Mr. Crumley was a developer and builder in Dunwoody since 1960. He was preceded in death by his brother, Virgle Crumley.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Juanita Lavaugh Crumley; son, Morris L. Crumley, Lawrenceville; daughter, Terry E. Crumley, Dunwoody; brothers, Jesse (J.K.) Crumley, Clermont, Cecil Crumley, Harold Crumley and Riley Crumley, Sr., Cleveland; sisters, Betty C. Cantrell, Suwanee, Peggy Abernathy, and Dorothy Jean Blackshire, both of Cleveland, Josephine Payne, Gainesville, Janell Black and Janet Allen, both of Clarkesville, and Mildred Rider, Clermont; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31. Mrs. Barbara Head officiated. Interment followed at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur was in charge of arrangements.
David Gravitt
Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Little-Davenport Funeral Home Chapel for Mr. David Lee Gravitt, 45, of Murrayville.
The Rev. Steve Williamson officiated. Burial was in Harmony Baptist Church cemetery in Dawson County.
Mr. Gravitt died Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Forsyth County, Mr. Gravitt lived in Hall County for most of his life.
He was the son of the late Luther and Fannie Mae Williamson Gravitt. He was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church in Dawson County.
Survivors include his daughters, Michelle Gravitt of Murrayville and Christina Gravitt of Forsyth County; sister, Linda Butler, Gainesville; brother and sister-in-law, Lonnie and Glenda Gravitt, Cleveland; granddaughters, April and Destiny; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Curtis Mitchell
Mr. Curtis Benjamin Mitchell, 82, of Cleveland died January 28, 2001 at his residence following a brief illness.
A native of Fayette County, he was the son of the late George and Mary Plummer Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Virginia Campbell Mitchell of Cleveland. Mr. Mitchell was retired from Cash and Carry Supermarket. He was a veteran of World War II, U. S. Air Force, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his son, Terry Mitchell, Forest Park; daughters, Joyce Whitmire , Riverdale, Jean McCurry, Jonesboro, Ann Pollette, Griffin, Linda Rudeseal, Alto, Brenda Mitchell, Hartwell, Shelia Tench, Dahlonega; brothers Henry Brown, Toccoa, Bobby Brown, Griffin; sisters, Mamie Lou Vickery and Frankie Mae Brown, both of Griffin; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on January 31, at Gateway Memory Park in Cleveland. The Rev. William Baker officiated.

Grady Winkler
Mr. Grady Douglas “Tiny” Winkler, 57, of Cleveland died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 after a brief illness.
Mr. Winkler was born in Bartow County and had lived in White County most of his life. He was preceded in death by his father Grady Wilson Winkler. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his mother Annie Grace Winkle, Cleveland; sister, Martha E. Head, Dahlonega; step-brother, Danny Ellis, Cleveland; son, Joey Winkler of Conyers; a special friend, Kay Truelove, Cleveland; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a number of friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, from Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert Langford and Rev. Robert Ledford officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Geraldine Blackstock
Mrs. Geraldine Tatum Blackstock, 80, of Cumming, died Saturday, March 31, 2001.
Mrs. Blackstock had attended Brookwood Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Blackstock.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Wanda and Ferrell Jennings and Brenda Whitt, all of Cumming; sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Jean Blackstock, Cumming, Randy and Lynne Blackstock, Cleveland; grandchildren, Michelle and Don Bryan, Bryan and Angie Fussell, Chet and Monica Blackstock, Brooke and Curtis Brookshire, and Perry Jennings, all of Cumming, and Shane and Crystal Blackstock, Dawsonville, Seth and Caleb Blackstock, Cleveland, and Lisa Boyd, Woodstock; great-grandchildren, Emma, Jake and Gil Fussell, Cumming, and Corbin Boyd, Woodstock; brother and sister-in-law, John Bernard and Loyce Tatum, Byron; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Myrtice Tatum, Marie Hall, Chippie Harris, and John Blackstock, all of Cumming, and Glendon Blackstock, Cleveland; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Nell Hill
Mrs. Lou Nell Johnson Hill, 79, of Austell, formerly of Clarkesville, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at her residence in Austell following an extended illness.
Born in Habersham County on August 21, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Sally Sosebee Johnson and had lived most of her adult life in Cobb County. Nell and her husband, Marvin, moved back to Habersham County in 1976 after retirement. Nell was a homemaker and member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Hill; daughter, Donna Sue Fullam; granddaughter, Miranda L. Siniard; a brother and four sisters.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Chapel in Clarkesville with the Rev. George Deadwyler and Dr. Phil Griffin officiating. Interment was at the Blue Creek Baptist cemetery in Cleveland.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda Lange, Rebecca and Jack Farmer, all of Austell, and Cheryl and Tom Crook, Sanford, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Truett and Diane Hill, Austell; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Buelah London, Hendersonville, NC.

James Hilton
Mr. James Ralph Hilton, 48, of Sautee, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the Haven House Hospice in Atlanta following an extended illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30 at Harvest Christian Church in Habersham County. Interment followed in Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Hilton was born in Habersham County, a son of James Rex and Alice Waldrop Hilton. He was employed by U.S. Filters and served in the 2nd Airborne in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hilton was a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church and a graduate of White County High School and Piedmont College. He was preceded in death by his father, James Rex Hilton.
Survivors include his sons, James Chadwick Hilton, Sautee, and Benjamin Andrew Hilton, Lawrenceville; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy Clinton and Candice Hilton, Bethlehem; daughter, Rebekah Hilton, Alto; mother, Alice Hilton, Sautee; brother, Michael Hilton, Sautee; sister, Ruth Billew, Athens; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Mitchell Pharris, Sautee; and grandchildren, Kaylen Hilton and Timothy Clinton Hilton Jr., both of Bethlehem, and Caleb Morgan, Sautee.

Bonelle Hudgins
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001 at the chapel of Ward’s Funeral Home for Mrs. Bonelle Stevens Hudgins, 83, of Gainesville. The Rev. Chip Penland officiated. Interment followed in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Hudgins died Saturday, March 31 at Lakeshore Heights Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Hudgins was born in Hopewell, Va., but lived in North Georgia most of her life. She had lived in White and Jackson counties before moving to Belmont in Hall County when she was a teen-ager.
She worked at both Warren Featherbone and Barry Manufacturing in Gainesville, but for most of her life, she worked at home, devoting her time
and energies to her husband, J. Edwin Hudgins, who died Nov. 30, 1987, and
her three children.
In her younger married
life, she was active in the Livewire Home Demonstration Club and served as president of the Hall County Demonstration Club. She took pride in her abilities as a seamstress and cook and won local contests for both skills. She joined the Galilee Christian Church as a young woman.
Mrs. Hudgins is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Florene Hudgins, Franklin, N.C., and Phil and Shirley Hudgins, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Mike Wilson, Gainesville; brothers, Dean Stevens, Gainesville, and James A. Stevens, Braselton; sisters, Doris Jordan, Lithia Springs, and Betty Wintrub, Miami, Fla.; grandchildren, Wayne Hudgins, Athens, Dawn Richards, Gainesville, Winn Hudgins, Athens, Beth Navage, St. Petersburg, Fla., Michele Smith, Anderson, S.C., Marcia Brock, LaGrange, Clay Wilson, Gainesville, and Traci Penland, Wake Forest, N.C.; and 10 great-grandchildren. Dora Roberts
Mrs. Dora Roberts, 90, of Cleveland, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Friendship Healthcare Center following an extended illness. Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Claremont, N.H. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Roberts was born in Claremont, N.H. and had lived in White County for several years.
She is survived locally by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Polly Roberts, Cleveland; grandchildren; and a host of relatives in New Hampshire.

Mrs. Hazel Thomas, 86, of Demorest, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at her daughter’s residence following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Henry Grady Barnes and Rev. Garvin Kinsey officiated. Interment followed in Dukes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Thomas was born in White County, and had lived here most of her life. She had lived in Demorest for the past 16 years. She was a member of Union Grove Congregational Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonah Thomas; daughter, Olean Bates; and sons, Neal Thomas and J. B. Thomas.

Miss Hattie Mae Westmoreland, 91, of Gainesville, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Lakeshore Heights Nursing Center following an extended illness.
Miss Westmoreland was born in Jackson County and had lived in Hall County most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee and Pearl Sargent Westmoreland. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sister, Vera Wooten, Gainesville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 from the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. J. L. Yopp and Rev. Leonard Gibbs officiated. Interment followed in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Alex Cantrell
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2001 from the Barrett Funeral Home Chapel for Mr. Alex Cantrell, 71 of Cleveland.
The Rev. Tim Barrett and Mrs. Barbara Head officiated. Burial followed in Gateway Memory Park.
Mr. Cantrell died Sunday, June 24, 2001 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a sudden illness.
Mr. Cantrell was born in White County where he lived all of his life. He was preceded in death by his father, John J. Cantrell. Mr. Cantrell was a past member and a member of the Yonah Masonic Lodge #382 F & A.M., a member of the American Legion, and a member of the VFW Post 7720, Cornelia. Mr. Cantrell is a veteran of the Korean war serving in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the Cleveland First Baptist Church.
