Howard Glover
12/17/1908 - 9/10/2010

A colorful chapter in the historical fabric of Coweta County came to an end in the early morning hours of September 10, 2010 as Dr. Howard Clarke Glover, Jr. departed this life in the comfort of his home. “Dr. Howard”, as he was affectionately known, had celebrated his 101st birthday last December 17th. He was born in Coweta County December 17, 1908 and was one of nine children of the marriage of Howard Clarke and Fannie Virginia Jones Glover. Besides his parents, Dr. Glover was preceded in death by his siblings Virginia Glover Graham, Caroline Frances Glover, Thomas Jones Glover, J. Littleton Glover, Mary Jones Glover Nixon, and the brother with whom he operated The Glover Clinic, Dr. Nathaniel Banks Glover. Educated as an undergraduate at Mercer University and the University of Virginia, Dr. Glover graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1934. He was a member of Kappa Alpha and the Phi Beta PI medical society. He served internships and residencies at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Watts‘s Hospital in Durham, and at Egleston Hospital in Atlanta (now Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta). He then returned to his roots in Newnan to practice medicine for more than 55 years, and for more than 40 years he operated the Glover Clinic at 6 Brown Street in partnership with his brother Nat. He retired in 1993 at the age of 85. Possessed of a remarkable spirit of service, Dr. Howard was the saving grace for many an anxious parent. His calm, reassuring manner put fears aside if the child presented a runny nose or any other more serious problem. His patients knew that at the end of the visit there would be that comforting hug from Dr. Howard to go along with the bird he inevitably drew on each child’s hand. Mom and dad would be sent on their way, knowing that this good man would welcome their calls of concern should it be day or night. A great testimony to his endearing nature would be the hundreds of pictures of his patients that were framed on all the walls in his office. Many of his patients would continue to be cared for by him through high school and college if the need arose. His “kids” just did not want to give him up. Dr. Glover led a well-balanced life and loved to spend his leisure time enjoying hunting, fishing, or on the golf course. He was adept as a card player in bridge or poker. During his professional career he was a member of the Rotary Club and served on the board of, at that time, The Citizens and Southern Bank. As a loyal member of Central Baptist Church he had served as chairman of the board of deacons and was Deacon Emeritus at the time of his death. Dr. Glover is survived by his wife, Margaret Trapnell Glover to whom he was married January 1, 1938 in Newnan. His children are Harriett Trapnell Glover McCune of Alexandria, VA, Howard Clarke Glover III and his wife Becky of Lookout Mountain, TN, John Trapnell Glover and his wife Sandra of Atlanta and William Norwood Glover of Atlanta. Also surviving are his grandchildren John Chambers McCune III of Mobile, AL, John Trapnell Glover Jr. and his wife Merrilee of Bozeman, MT, Howard Clarke Glover IV and his wife Sarah of Boston, MA, Richard Trapnell Glover and his wife Emily of Chattanooga, TN and Jeffrey Barron Glover and his wife Carrie of Atlanta. There are six great grandchildren. They are Elizabeth S. McCune and Catherine A. McCune of Victoria, BC, Amelia C. Glover of Bozeman, MT, Sophia D. Glover of Boston, MA, James Alexander Glover of Atlanta and Richard Gates Glover of Chattanooga. His surviving siblings are Winifred Glover Boone Klein of Atlanta and Clifford Clarke Glover of West Point, GA. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday at McKoon Funeral Home between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be Monday, September 13, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Central Baptist Church with Dr. Joel E. Richardson officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Dr. Glover’s memory may be honored by contributions to Central Baptist Church of Newnan P.O. Box 1221 Newnan, Georgia 30264.
