SARDIS, Ga. -- Mr. Robert Philpot, 73, of 731 Girard Road, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Skyview Nursing Home, Sylvania.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Samuel L. Grant officiating. Burial will be in Beech Branch Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mr. Philpot, a native of Burke County, was a retired city employee of Sardis and the Georgia Department of Transportation. He was a member of Beech Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Latrecia Frank and Evelyn Freeman, both of Sardis, and Emma Kelly, Macon; one brother, Eugene Philpot, Florida; three sisters, Lola D. Sims, Atlanta, Sarah King, Sardis, and Bernice Whitehead, Fort Lauderdale; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Franklin Bonner, Daryl Lassiter, Lawrence Bonner, Fredrick Freeman, Arthur Freeman and Derrick Blockett.

Friends may call at the residence or Phinazee and Son Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Rev. James Hankerson

Minister

AIKEN -- The Rev. James Hankerson, of 118 Palisades Drive, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Four Mile Baptist Church, New Ellenton, with the Rev. C.W. Phinizy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

The Rev. Hankerson, a native of Barnwell County, was a minister and a member of Four Mile Baptist Church.

Survivors include seven sons, Joe Wright, Silver Springs, Md., James Hankerson, Henry Hankerson and Charles Hankerson, all of Philadelphia, Theodore Hankerson, New York, Nathaniel Hankerson, North Augusta, and Matthew Hankerson, Atlanta; three daughters, Carrie Shakir and Ann Curry, both of Atlanta, and Beulah Bell, Aiken; and 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the residence or Cheatham Funeral Home, New Ellenton.

The family will receive friends at noon today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thelma Hughes

Retired housekeeper

LAKE WALES, Fla. -- Mrs. Thelma Hudson Hughes, 64, of 111 Sissom Ave., died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Lake Wales Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Booker T. Memorial Chapel, Sylvania, Ga., with the Rev. Larry Scarboro officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Memorial Park, Sylvania.

Mrs. Hughes, a native of Screven County, was a retired housekeeper and a member of Church of God in Christ Written in Heaven Ministry.

Survivors include her mother, Janie Hudson, Sylvania; one son, Robert Hughes, Lake Wales; one daughter, Velma Hughes, Lake Wales; two brothers, Willie Hudson, Atlanta, and Leroy Hudson, Sylvania; five sisters, Cora Lee Williams, Alice Cutter and Geneva Lovett, all of Sylvania, and Maggie Parrish and Velma Hudson, both of Savannah; and one grandchild.

Pallbearers will be her nephews and cousins.

Sylvania Funeral Home, Sylvania, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martha Jones

Retired registered nurse

WASHINGTON, Ga. -- Mrs. Martha Nash Jones, 80, of 1736 Courtground Road, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at her residence.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Washington-Wilkes Memorial Garden with the Revs. Michael Davenport and Thompson Holloman officiating.

Mrs. Jones, a native of Wilkes County, was a retired registered nurse with the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Augusta, and was an Army veteran of World War II, where she served in the Army Nurse Corps and was the youngest chief nurse in the European Theater Organization. She was a member of Pine View Baptist Church, the American Legion Post No. 192 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include two sons, John Nash Horky, Augusta, and James Edward Horky, Greenville, S.C.; three daughters, Jean Martha Barney, Martinez, Janice Sue Andrews, Westminster, Calif., and Johanna Rose Seeger, Dickson, Tenn.; one sister, Mamie Ruth Cason, Rayle; and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Marshall Sherrer, Mike Mills, Thomas Wheatley, Tommy Thaxton, Tommy Bradford and Chip Hardin.

Memorials may be made to Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington, GA 30673, or the International Myeloma Foundation, 2129 Stanley Hill Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90046.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hopkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Paul Knox

Former school superintendent

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Mr. Paul Knox, 96, of 819 Georgia Ave., died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at National Healthcare.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Revs. James Hunter, John M. Younginer Jr. and John Newell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hill cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mr. Knox, a native of Abbeville County, was a former superintendent of North Augusta schools and a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of stewards and was a former Sunday school teacher. He was a graduate of Wofford College, attended Wofford Fitting School and did his graduate studies at the University of South Carolina and Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn. He taught in Lanford Station, McCormick, and Morrill, Neb. He was a member of the Parent Teachers Association, the Aiken County Board of Education and the Beech Island Agriculture Club. He was a charter member of the North Augusta Lions Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He received the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. The Paul Knox Scholarship and Pamplin Grant for Outstanding Students at North Augusta High School were given in his honor.

The family said he was a perfect husband and father. His commitment to his family, school and community was his calling from God.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Wiggins Knox; three daughters, Katherine Fowler, Morristown, Tenn., Miriam Harter, Midland, Mich., and Geneva Larson, Carmel, Ind.; and 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ed Stillwell, James Martin, Buren Lown, J.T. Sherman, Cally Gault and Jim Buist.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Etheridge Bible Class and the North Augusta Lions Club.

Memorials may be made to Paul Knox Scholarship Fund at North Augusta High School, Paul and Katherine Knox Scholarship at Wofford College or Grace United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Rowland Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mary Morris

Mrs. Mary Frances Morris, 83, of 2142 Broad St., died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Beverly Manor Convalescent Center.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue, with the Rev. Charles Mason officiating. Burial will be in West View cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mrs. Morris, a native of Graniteville, was a retired weaver with Bath Mills.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Edward Morris; one son, Courtney Parrish, Rocky Mount, N.C.; one brother, Frank Duncan, Frisco, Calif.; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be William Gill, Bill Beasley, Steve Cliett, Owen Reams, Bobby Cushman and Ward Clark.

Mr. Jerome Porter

Air Force

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Mr. Jerome ``Jay" Porter, 32, of 30380 Cherry Drive, Elmendorf Air Force Base, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Providence Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Peoples Funeral Home, Augusta, with the Rev. Jackson Parks officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.

Mr. Porter, a native of Augusta, was an Air Force staff sergeant.

Survivors include his wife, Tracey Porter; two sons, Brandon Porter and Christopher Porter; his parents, Jimmy and Mariam Porter; one brother, Jeffery Porter; four sisters, Joy Porter, Jacqueline Porter, Aundreya Cain and Jeannie Beard.

Pallbearers will be members of the Air Force.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mary Roberts

Homemaker

SPRINGFIELD, S.C. -- Mrs. Mary Frances Roberts, 90, of Kyzer Brown Road, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Dukes and Todd Felkel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Mrs. Roberts, a native of Alabama, was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Sunday school class. She was a member of Elderberries Club.

Survivors include five sons, Eugene McCollum, Aiken, Lewis McCollum, Gaston, LeGrande McCollum, Neeses, Dwight McCollum, Springfield, and Leslie McCollum, Wagener; four daughters, Nellie Vaughn, Columbia, Gladys Browder, Eastover, Mary Frances Carter, Columbia, and Shirley Bolin, Wagener; one brother, Horace Brown, Savannah; one sister, Marie Colsom, Savannah; and 42 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Springfield, SC 29146.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Folk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mamie Sanford

Civil service retiree

THOMSON -- Mrs. Mamie Nelson Sanford, 79, of 203 Pitts St., died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Mount Aldred Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Warren County, with the Rev. C.O. Logan officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Milledgeville.

Mrs. Sanford, a native of Hancock County, was retired from the civil service and was a member of Mount Aldred Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, the Women's Missionary Baptist Society, Friendship Society and the Paupers Aide Society.

Survivors include three sons, Howard Sanford Jr. and Robert L. Sanford, both of Philadelphia, and Bennie Sanford, Thomson; two daughters, Ella Jones, New York, and Ernestine McCord, Philadelphia; and one brother, Azel Nelson, Milledgeville.

Pallbearers will be stewards of Mount Aldred Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Friends may call at the residence or Thomson Funeral System.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
