MILLEN, Ga. -- Mr. Austin Antonio Lans, 77, of 5337 Lans Lane, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at his residence.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church.
Mr. Lans, a native of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, was a retired machinist and a veteran of the Merchant Marines. He was a member of St. Martha's Roman Catholic Church, Uniondale, N.Y. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, 3rd degree, and Council Powell No. 3488, Uniondale.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta P. Lans; one son, Antonio P. Lans, Millen; two brothers, Allen Lans, St. Thomas, and Walton Lans, New York; and two sisters, Maude Studemire and Mrs. Allen Lans, both of New York.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at James R. Barnes Mortuary, 30 James St., Statesboro.

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Mrs. Elizabeth Hall McKie, 79, of 1195 Pine Grove Road, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center.
The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Evening Light Church of God, Graniteville, with the Rev. Leroy Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Mims Grove Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, North Augusta.
Mrs. McKie, a native of Aiken County, was a homemaker and a member of Evening Light Church of God, where she was a member of the choir.
Survivors include four sons, Levi McKie Jr., Everett McKie, Haywood McKie and Wilbert McKie; six daughters, Juanita Patten, Rosetta Newsome, Connie Avery, Mary Judge, Carolyn Trowell and Jennifer Jenkins; one sister, Hattie Bell Jackson; and 31 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Mixson, a native of Old Barnwell County, was a farmer and a member of Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Missionary Society.
Survivors include four sons, Johnny Mixson, Okeechobee, Fla., Richard Mixson, Greer, Henry Mixson, Martin, and Elliott Mixson, Allendale; six daughters, Annie Ruth Washington and Mary Mixsom, both of Martin, Bertha L. KEMPTON, Ill. -- Mrs. Lois F. Moore, 71, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Augusta.

Mrs. Moore, a native of Kempton, was a 1944 graduate of Kempton High School and operated The General Store, Kempton. She had been employed at the Arsenal, Joliet, and had been a school bus driver. She retired from R.R. Donnelley and Sons, Dwight.
Survivors include three sons, Randy Moore, Augusta, Marty Moore, Chicago, and Rick Moore, Springfield, Mo.; one daughter, Kristi Moritz, Buckingham; two sisters, Lorraine Spies, Kankakee, and Louise Holbrook, Salinas, Calif.; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

MILLEN, Ga. -- The Rev. Eugene Robinson, 69, of McComb Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Augusta.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nannie E. Williams United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Reese officiating. Burial will be in New Millen cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.
The Rev. Robinson, a native of Jenkins County, was ordained into the ministry in 1987 and served as pastor of Green Grove Baptist Church, Emanuel County, and as hospice volunteer pastor. He had been youth pastor of Brinson Rock Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War and received two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie L. Robinson; one daughter, Mary Smith, Macon; and one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

GREER, S.C. -- Mr. James Benjamin Scott, 53, of 110 Five Oaks Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at his residence.

Mr. Scott, a native of Fairforest, was a rehabilitation counselor with the Commission for the Blind and a member of Devenger Road Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Shook, a native of Gurlitz, Germany, was a homemaker and a member of Hephzibah Baptist Church.

BARNWELL, S.C. -- Mr. Granville Smoot Jr., 73, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mole Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bob Clyburn officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Barnwell County Memory Gardens.
Mr. Smoot, a native of Keysville, Va., had retired as a supervisor from E.I. DuPont, Savannah River Plant. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a past master of Harmony Masonic Lodge No. 17. He was a member of VFW, Happy Go Lucky Camping Group and Barnwell United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board.
Survivors include his wife, Dorotha Neel Smoot; a son, Granville Smoot III; a daughter, Rhea S. Ridgeway, Barnwell; a brother, Donald Smoot, Woodbridge, Va.; a sister, Helen Haydon, Danville, Va.; and five grandsons and a great-grandson.
Pallbearers will be Doug Ridgeway, Keith Ridgeway, Mike Ridgeway, Cory Ridgeway, Harrison Fickling and Larry Catlett.

Dr. Richard Starr
AUSTIN, Texas -- Dr. Richard Cawthon Starr, 73, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Greensboro City cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Greensboro, Ga., with the Rev. Richard Chewning officiating.
Dr. Starr, a native of Greene County, earned a bachelor of science degree from Georgia Teachers College, a master of arts degree from George Peabody College and a doctoral degree in biology from Vanderbilt University. In 1950 and 1951, he was a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge University. He served as president for the Botanical Society and Phycological Society of America and was a fellow of the American Advancement of Science and Indiana Academy of Sciences. He served as a professor of botany at Indiana University, where he was the acting chairman. Dr. Starr received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1971 from the Georgia Southern University biology department and the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1998 from the Georgia Southern University's College of Science and Technology. He had been professor of biology at University of Texas and the director of Algae Culture Collection Section of the International Microbiological Society. Dr. Starr was a member of the National Academy of Science and had received the U.S. Senior Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Gilbert Morgan Smith Medal from the National Academy of Science.
Survivors include one sister, Jo Starr Callaway, Statesboro, Ga.

Mr. Ralph Swenson

Mr. Ralph A. ``Swede" Swenson, 75, of 1909 Driftwood Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue, with the Rev. Gordon Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.
Mr. Swenson, a native of Cut Bank, Mont., was retired from the civil service and the Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, American Legion Post No. 205, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 10, Paralyzed American Veterans Chapter 10, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, CSRA Sam's and the CSRA Ramblers.
Survivors include one nephew, John Anderson, Eau Claire, Wis.; and one niece, Arlene V. Roy, Silver Cliff, Colo.
Pallbearers will be members of the Army Honor Guard from Fort Gordon.
Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Cancer Society.
