CLAYTON, Ga. -- Charles Ray Taylor, 61, of Kirby Road, Tiger died Sunday, April 6, 2003, in Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville.
Born in Habersham County, he was a rock and brick mason and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are brothers, Robert Taylor of Tiger, Joe Taylor of Bethlehem and David F. Taylor of Canton; and sisters, Mae Jones of Tiger and Betty Smith of Lakemont.

He was the son of the late Fred and Inez Savage Taylor. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul T. Taylor.

Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Hunter Funeral Home by the Rev. Thomas Burrell and Layman Lloyd Hunter; burial will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Turnerville. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Mae Jones on Kirby Road, Belton.

Clinton Herring

DEWY ROSE, Ga. -- Robert Clinton "Poe" Herring, 89, of 1255 Coldwater Road died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Hart Care Center.
Born in Elbert County, he was retired from Harmony Blue Granite Company with over 30 years of service. He was a member of the Bio Baptist Church, a Deacon and a member of the Men's Sunday school class.

Surviving are daughters, Gwen Turner of Dewy Rose and Linda Tucker of Hartwell; brother, Herman W. Herring of Elberton; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was the widower of Ruth Hall Herring and the son of the late Milton H. Herring and Mamie Gingles Herring. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Bates; three brothers, Jessie L. Herring, Elmer Herring and V.G. Herring; and one grandson, Greggory Turner.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home, Hartwell, by the Revs. Ed Sayer and Billy Pittman; burial will be in the Elmhurst cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Elberton. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family members are at their respective homes.

Flowers are optional. The family suggests memorials be made to the charity of one's choice.

Evelyn Barron

Feb. 2, 1907 -- April 6, 2003
ALTO, Ga. -- Evelyn Wright Barron, 96, of Alto died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at a private nursing home.

Born in Polk County, she was a school teacher retiring in 1969 with 20 years service teaching school. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Becky Waldrop of Alto; daughter, Alice Cunningham of Winston-Salem, N.C.; brother, Walter S. Wright of Rockmart; and two granddaughters.

She was the widow of William F. "Bill" Barron and the daughter of the late William Howard Wright and Alice Stephenson Wright. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Tara Hester.

Services are at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Stowe; burial will follow in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service.

The family suggests memorials be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 488, Clarkesville, Ga. 30523.

Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Ga. is in charge of arrangements.

Ida DuBose

Nov. 4, 1936 -- April 5, 2003
ELBERTON, Ga. -- Ida Elizabeth DuBose, 66, of 318 Rail Road St. died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Lanier Park Campus in Gainesville.

A native of Hart County, she was a member of Shiloh C.M.E. Church in Hartwell.

Surviving are sons, Donnie Gaines of Elberton, Andy Gaines and Wade Gaines, both of Hartwell and William Gaines of Canon; daughters, Wanda Anderson of Hartwell and Kristi Gaines of Elberton; stepson, Tyron Morrison of Lavonia; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Harold BuBose and the daughter of the late Andy and Katherine Bowers. She was first married to Bill Gaines.

Services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh C.M.E. Church, Hartwell, by the Rev. Richard Sheller; burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. until hour of service.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Wanda Anderson, 252 Tefel East Drive, Hartwell.

Mack's Funeral Home of Hartwell, Ga. is in charge of arrangements.

James Williams

March 27, 1937 -- April 6, 2003
DEMOREST, Ga. -- James Bobby Williams, 66, of Demorest died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center.

Born in Habersham County, he worked in the maintenance department for the Habersham County Board of Education. He attended Baldwin Congregational Holiness Church.

Surviving are widow, Geraldine Palmer Williams of Demorest; daughter, Robbie Wade of Clarkesville; son, James Roger Williams of Clarkesville; brothers, Leon Williams of Demorest and Michael Williams of Cornelia; sister, Kathleen Smith of Clarkesville; three granddaughters; and three grandsons.

He was the son of the late Jim L. and Ruby Foster Williams. He was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Ann Williams.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin-Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, by the Revs. Sanford Kimbrell, Matthew Mote and Lester Palmer; burial will follow in Clarkesville cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Laura Maney

July 23, 1918-April 6, 2003
BALDWIN, Ga. -- Laura Lucille Nix Maney, 84, of Dallas St. died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center.

Born in Rabun County, she had lived in Habersham, and was the daughter of the late Robert "Rob" Nix and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Martin Nix. She was preceded in death by a son, Jewell Pruitt Maney, Jr.; and brothers and sisters, Floyd and Minor Hunnicutt, C.C. Nix, Rosalee Taylor Church, Mildred Williams and Magnolia Carlan. She and her husband formerly owned Maney's Suit Shop in Toccoa. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Demorest Church of God.

Surviving are widower, Jewell Pruitt Maney Sr. of Baldwin; daughters, Sue King of Cornelia, Shirlee Williams of Cornelia, and Joyce R. Maney of Oxford; sons, Leonard L. Maney, Larry J. Maney and Bobby J. Maney, all of Baldwin; sister, Bobbie Whitlock of Demorest; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, by the Revs. William Cox and Mike Franklin; burial will be in Yonah Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Len Pirkle. The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Louise Church

CLAYTON, Ga. -- Louise Donaldson Church, 84, of Dacula, formerly of Rabun County died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Joan Glancy Hospital in Duluth.
She was secretary and bookkeeper for Church Oil Co. for many years and was a member of the Tiger Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Linda Glausier of Dacula; son, John Church of Lavonia; sister, Elise Fields of Clayton and Juanita Kilby of Mt. City; and brothers, James Donaldson of Clayton and Harold Donaldson of Pontiac, Mich.

She was the widow of Robert Ray Church Sr. and the daughter of the late Luke and Elizabeth Dotson Donaldson. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Ray Church Jr.; and two brothers, Robert Donaldson and Lewis Donaldson.

Services are at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Hunter Funeral Home by the Revs. J.C. Quilliams and Jimmie Kilby; burial will be in Rabun Memory Park. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

CORNELIA, Ga. -- Taft Lee "Pete" Leach, 68, of Cornelia died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center.

Born in Habersham County, he was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are sisters, Delores Leach of Salisbury, N.C. and Christine Bowles of Gastonia, N.C.; brother, Willis "Dub" Leach of Commerce; and one grandson.

He was the son of the late Monroe and Hattie Belle Tanksley Leach. He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Leach.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery with the Revs. Roy Lee Mitchell and Lloyd Free officiating. The family will receive friends at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Vera Mae Slater

April 6, 1915 -- April 7, 2003
TOCCOA, Ga. -- Vera Mae Andrews Slater, 88, of The Toccoa Nursing Center, 743 Falls Road, formerly of the Clarks Creek Community in Martin died Monday, April 7, 2003.

Born in Hart County, she was a member of the Clarks Creek Baptist Church in Martin. She was a homemaker and had been employed by several textile mills in the Lavonia area.

Surviving are daughters, Lou Edna Ginn of Tucker, Daimy Keese of Seneca, Claudia Hamby of Augusta and Revonda Harbert of Easley; brothers, Herman Slater of Centerville, Ohio and Frank Slater of Hartwell; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of J.C. "Pete" Slater and the daughter of the late Frank and Ira Lee McFarlin Andrews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude, Roy and Hoyt Andrews.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel Hamby Funeral Home, Lavonia, by the Rev. Carroll Allen; burial will follow in the Franklin Memorial Gardens, North.

The family members will be at their respective homes.

Becky Segars

July 30, 1941 -- June 6, 2003
CARNESVILLE, Ga. -- Rebecca London "Becky" Segars, 61, of 10525 Hwy. 106, died Friday, June 6, 2003 at Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens.

She was a co-owner of Douglas Segars Used Cars and was a member of Lavonia Church of God.

Surviving are widower, Douglas Segars; daughters, Teresa Watkins of Carnesville and Tanya Belk of Lanett, Ala.; sons, Brian Segars of Ocala, Fla., Kevin Segars of Carnesville and Klinton Segars of Athens; mother, Nell Waters London of Toccoa; brothers, Jimmy London, Johnny London and Terry London, all of Toccoa; and a sister, Linda Fricks of Toccoa.

She was the daughter of the late Homer Merritt London and was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Daniel Segars; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Segars.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at the Lavonia Church of God by the Revs. Willard Fitzpatrick, Thomas Whitfield and Jewell Segars; entombment will be at the Franklin Memorial Gardens. The body is at the Ginn Funeral Home, and will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Hal Brown, Sr.

TOCCOA, Ga. -- Mr. Hal W. Brown, Sr., 67, of Fernside Drive, Toccoa, husband of Mary Jacqueline Green Brown, died Thursday, June 5, 2003 in Stephens County Hospital.
Born August 3, 1935 in Worth County, Ga., he was a son of the late Haywood Lee and Naomi Lunsford Brown and had lived in Toccoa for 20 years moving from Jamesville, N.C. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Doerun, Ga., and had been employed with Coats and Clark for 40 years and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was past President of Ruritan Club, was an avid fisherman, golfer and Braves fan. He was the worlds Greatest Dan and Grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jacqueline Green Brown of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Julie Brown-Jenkins and her husband Mark of Toccoa; one son and daughter-in-law, Hal Wendall Brown, Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of Toccoa; three grandchildren, Jonathan Robert Dobson and his wife Keri, Kenny G. Rice, and Hannah Joy Rice, all of Toccoa; three brothers, Wayne Brown, Bobby Brown and Carol Brown, all of South, Ga.; two sisters, Jean Brown and Betsy Brown Meredith, both of South, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Sunday, June 8, 2003 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. Roger Elrod and Rev. Harlon Noles officiating.

Burial will follow in Stephens Memorial Gardens.

The body is at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 6 PM until 8 PM Saturday evening.

FLOWERS ARE OPTIONAL. Those desiring may make memorials to Habitat For Humanity.

The family will be at the home.

Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
